One thing thats been bothering me is how the mc campaigners seem to focus almost exclusively on animal rights over people rights in the Third World. For example, their picketing of mcDonalds sights seems focused exclusively or gives priority to animal rights. It seems silly and unethical to me to give this kind of priority to animal rights over native peoples rights.. I dont think it helps the campaign when its seen as an animal rights issue. As an animal rights issue, the anti-McD campaign will continue to gain only a small following. People, myself included, will think, why are they going after a restaurant for its treatment of animals ...
 Animal rights is the position that animals should not be exploited. Animal rights people believe that animals should not be used for food, clothing, entertainment, medical research, or product testing.
In the past decade, philosopher Bernard Rollin points out, we have witnessed a major revolution in social concern with animal welfare and the moral status of animals. Adopting the stance of a moderate, Harold Guither attempts to provide an unbiased examination of the paths and goals of the members of the animal rights movement and of its detractors. Given the level of confusion, suspicion, misunderstanding, and mistrust between the two sides, Guither admits the difficulty in locating, much less staying in, the middle of the road. The philosophical conflict, however, is fairly clear: those who resist reform, fearing that radical change in the treatment of animals will infringe on their business and property rights, versus the new activists who espouse a different set of moral and ethical obligations toward animals. From his position as a moderate, Guither presents a brief history of animal protection and the emergence of animal rights, describes the scope of the movement, and identifies major players
If you listen to the animal rights writers, you quickly realize that their goal is a homogenized globalized culture based on a Western ethical paradigm and a human separation from nature. Animal rights philosophy could be considered a disease of civilization. ~ Melissa McEwen (April 16, 2010)

ANIMAL rights activists have called on the authorities to investigate Loro Parque in Tenerife over the mistreatment of its orca whales.. PETA based the accusations on pictures taken in March of orcas with scars that appeared to come from rakes, large quantities of mucus in their eyes and broken teeth.. The park houses six orcas, four on loan from Americas SeaWorld, one born in captivity and one given over by Dutch authorities.. PETA is concerned that the other orcas have attacked Morgan, the smallest whale born in captivity, and that the park is not sufficiently protecting the animals from aggressive behaviour developed in captivity.. ...

Were heartbroken to learn that a member of Seattles vegan community has killed himself.. Of course, he belonged to many communities - family, friends, people who saw him regularly but were acquaintances - and that means a lot of very painful grieving is happening now. Our love and wishes for healing go out to everyone whose lives he touched and who is hurting.. Its also a good time to remember that suicide is something we can and should talk about - that expressing whats in our hearts at a time like this can help us heal and eventually motivate us to find out more about suicides warning signs and what we can do about them.. As Veda Stram, an animal rights activist from Camano Island, wrote when she learned of this recent death, "My only relationship with him was as a customer at Vegan Haven, where I volunteer one day a week. I probably saw him each and every time I volunteered….. My writing this is to BEG, ENCOURAGE, URGE anyone in whatever we call our vegan community to let us know if ...

Medical ethics, as defined by Wikipedia.org, is the discipline of evaluating the merits, risks and social concerns of activities in the medical field. Medical ethics provide suggestions and principles that doctors and other healthcare professionals should take into consideration while treating patients. These principles include the Hippocratic Oath of do no harm; the patient s right to dignity, truthfulness and honesty; acting in the best interest of the patient; justice with regard to treatment and the patient s right to choose or refuse treatment (Wikipedia). These principles do not provide answers to doctors and healthcare professionals with regard to actual cases; they act as a guide in decision-making. Many doctors, scientists and healthcare professionals look to medical ethics for guidance in making life and death decisions. Medical ethics also extends itself to animals and animal rights. Acting in the best interests of animals is important since they have provided and continue to provide ...

Posted on 01/25/2005 2:18:45 AM PST by nickcarraway. Twelve years ago, the Liberal British MP Lord Alton quit the House of Commons largely because his party supported abortion on demand, but opposed the use of goldfish as fairground prizes. The depravity of the situation was too much even for a liberal parliamentarian. The lord resigned forthwith. The goldfish controversy was back the other week as the ruling Labour Party considered a ban on animals as competition prizes. After an intense debate that must have resembled a Monty Python skit, ministers decided that with elections coming up they would look very silly indeed if they pressed for the goldfish ban. Similarly the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals appeared rather silly after it recently lost its appeal to halt a California Milk Producers Advisory Boards Happy Cows advertising campaign. PETA objected to the campaigns tag line Great Cheese comes from Happy Cows. Happy Cows come from California. PETA ...

Animal rights extremists-whom the FBI has labeled Americas biggest domestic terrorism threat-have encountered a number of serious reverses recently. These reverses are a great victory for science, free inquiry, and public health. In particular, Americans could learn from a popular movement in Britain that is standing up to the threats and intimidation of the animal

Citing inclement weather and heavy traffic, an animal rights group is pushing to ban horse carriage rides in Old Sacramento, a staple of the historic town. Rick Newborn has been doing the carriage rides for 30 years and says he takes steps to ensure that the horses are comfortable, even in hot weather. Still, the group thinks the practice should be banned.

Dear Rick Hansen:. I hope that during your next 25 years of raising money for spinal cord research (SCR) we will see the end of inhumane, scientifically fallacious spinal cord experiments on animals. It was 25 years ago when Lifeforce, a Vancouver based ecology and animal rights organization, gave you extensive data about the failure of "animal models" but you went on to fund animal experiments. Your Boards have had many vivisectors directing your funding priorities. You have raised millions of dollars for SCR as the "Man in Motion". Your "dream" for a cure is a nightmare for animals.. It is time to stop the barbaric experiments that have been repeated for over 50 years. New technologies, clinical/ epidemiological studies permit humane studies with humans. That is how breakthroughs are discovered!. Your money raised for SCR includes experiments on animals in which they are intentionally paralysed and subjected to abusive tests. Numerous doctors agree that vivisection retards scientific progress ...
Tom Regan is Professor of philosophy at North Carolina State University and a leading animal rights advocate. His best known work is in the form of his book The Case for Animal Rights (1983).. Regans position on animal rights and how it differs from that of Singers.. Regan disagrees with Singers utilitarian program for animal liberation, for he rejects utilitarianism as lacking a notion of intrinsic worth. According to Regan, animals and humans all have equal intrinsic value on which their right to life and concern are based. This is precisely where Regan and Singer philosophically differ as Singer does not take into account this intrinsic value that Regan argues for; that utilitarianism lacks.. Regan calls for the total abolition of the use of animals in science, the total dissolution of the commercial animal agriculture system, and the total elimination of commercial and sport hunting and trapping. Regan writes, "The fundamental wrong is the system that allows us to view animals as our ...
The tide could be turning against animal rights activists who demonstrate on campuses around the nation. Today marks the launch of Speaking of Research (SR), a student outreach organization, which aims to rally students and faculty in support of lifesaving medical research using animals.. Speaking of Research seeks to challenge animal rights dominance of the issue by participating in talks and debates on campuses across the country in the coming months. The groups website, http://www.speakingofresearch.org, provides students with the information and encouragement to enable them to speak out on the issue.. Animal rights activism is now at an all time high in the United States. Several university researchers have recently had their homes attacked by protesters while other scientists and their families have been threatened by mail, email and phone.. Tom Holder, founder of Speaking of Research, said: Students played a major part in changing public attitudes toward animal research in the UK, and we ...
You guys dont understand what this is all about. Most of those videos and photos were deliberate lies, staged by people who are not interested in a transition to healthier meat - they are interested in preventing anyone from eating any meat, period. They are "animal rights" extremists. The central purpose of the HSUS and the other animal rights organizations is to take all our pets and livestock away from us and prevent us from eating meat. They believe in Animal Rights, a vegan political philosophy that says that any human interference whatsoever in any animals life, whether humane or not, is "exploitation." They literally believe that animals are better off dead than owned or taken care of by any humans whatsoever, for any purpose, ever. The videotapers got those farm jobs specifically for the purpose of staging fake videos of things that dont usually happen at the farms, so they took carefully edited videos, or while the boss was away for a few hours or days they set up ugly scenes or paid ...

Animal welfare groups in Britain say they are outraged by a school fundraising contest that involves placing ferrets down the trousers of competitors.
A slaughterhouse or abattoir /ˈæbətwɑːr/ ( listen) is a facility where animals are slaughtered for consumption as food. Slaughterhouses supply meat which then becomes the responsibility of the packaging department. Slaughterhouses that process meat not intended for human consumption are sometimes referred to as knackers yards or knackeries, used for animals that are not fit for consumption or can no longer work on a farm such as work horses that can no longer work. Slaughtering animals on a large scale poses significant logistical problems, animal welfare problems, public health requirements, and environmental problems. Due to public aversion in many cultures, determining where to build slaughterhouses is also troubling. Animal welfare and animal rights groups frequently raise concerns about the methods of transport, preparation, herding, and killing within some slaughterhouses under the example of animal rights activists such as Howard Lyman and Ric OBarry. Until modern times, the ...
Steven Wise apparently has a new book out, Though the Heavens May Fall. The book is ostensibly about an 18th century British court case that helped turn the tide against slavery in that country, and of course you can probably imagine the sort of lesson that Wise wants us to take from that (if you cant, its that such a similar case could turn the tide toward animal rights).. As animal rights activists go, Wise is relatively harmless. He has a complex model - widely criticized by other activists - that would grant certain species legal rights based upon how likely they are to have the sort of sense of self that human beings have. Its overly complex and unworkable in this writers opinion, but at least Wise doesnt run around naked or make statements that killing those he disagrees with is not such a bad idea.. But he also used an argument that is simply stupid, unconvincing, and a bit out-of-character given Wises legalists arguments. He gave a speech at the University of Michigan in February in ...
What is worse? Eight little swans supposedly chasing away game species or industrial sprawl eating away habitat? Vermonts wildlife management agency has done nothing about development in the very same area. A wonderful article appeared in the Vermont Times, on July 30, 1997 by reporter Gretchen Fryling. It was about the game agencies obsession to manipulate animal populations. Mute swans are not considered native wildlife although theyve been here over 100 years. They seem to have no definition or protection at all under any law. Normally, an animal that successfully establishes itself in an area is considered naturalized. That means that, even though the species did not evolve in that territory, it has now found its niche and is successful in maintaining its population in the region. Naturalized and native species are normally considered on the same ecological footing. If we were to remove all naturalized plant and animal species from the continent, there would be very little flora ...
Ms. Chaitowitzs story is very sad. I do not know the presentation of her breast cancer; so I do not know how much additional benefit she would have derived from her chemotherapy in terms of increasing her odds of survival, had she not suffered her complication; it could vary from a few percent absolute benefit to much more. However, in general, the benefits of chemotherapy outweigh the risks, even in early stage breast cancer, where the benefits are relatively small on an absolute scale. Unfortunately, individual patients are not statistics. For example, when I counsel patients on the risk of a wound infection after surgery, I will often say something like, "The risk is around 2%, but if it happens to you its 100%, and you wont be reassured that you are in a small minority of patients." The same applies to Ms. Chaitowitzs case, but even more dramatically. Myelodysplastic syndrome is a known, albeit uncommon, complication of chemotherapy and radiation (around 0.3-0.7% risk in most recent ...

After college I became open to the sacred writings of people around the globe and found that there were common themes that could only be explained by events which happened in the theatre of the sky. This led me into all of the sciences. One can only get an accurate view of the total picture by looking at it from every angle with an open mind. I now am an avid animal rights activist and believe human rights, animal rights, and environmentalism should all go hand in hand. After spending most of my 20s and 30s in sunny Southern California I returned to the NW and now reside in Washington state.. ...
Outside of "Parasite," the major categories went largely as expected. Renee Zellweger won best actress for her portrayal of Judy Garland in "Judy," and Joaquin Phoenix won best actor for "Joker.". The best supporting actor and actress also went to frontrunners Brad Pitt for "Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood," while Laura Dern took best supporting actress for "Marriage Story.". Phoenix, who won his first-ever Oscar for his work as the unstable Arthur Fleck on his way to becoming Joker, gave perhaps the most impassioned speech of the night, talking at length about his belief and hope that people everywhere can come together for common cause.. "I see commonality whether were talking about gender inequality or racism or queer rights or animal rights," said Phoenix, who is well-known as an animal rights activist and vegan. Compassion for animals is one of the highest human virtues. It happens only through the dedication of individuals. Compassion and government are mutually exclusive concepts. The HSUS endorsement of Obama is but the tip of the iceberg. Consider that his primary political mentor, Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, has been the major proponent of anti-dog-owner animal rights legislation in Congress. Durbin is the sponsor of the current "PUPS" legislation that would extend the heavy arm of federal bureaucracy into most kennels in America, and also was the author of the failed amendment to the Pet Animal Welfare Act that was attached to the 2008 Farm Bill. Obamas main allies in Congress read like a "Whos Who" of radical animal rights activism: defeated Sen. Rick Santorum (author of the failed PAWS legislation three years ago), Sen. Diane Feinstein, Rep. Dennis Kucinich, Sen. Ted Kennedy and several others. Obamas running mate, Sen. Joe Biden, consistently gets 100% HSUS ratings. The Obama ticket is an ...

Hughes writes that I have "asserted that the project was a form of eugenics and cultural imperialism." The first thing I would want to be very clear about is that there is no such project in existence and so I dont think it IS anything at all, strictly speaking. The only actually-existing Project to which Hughes essay refers here is The Great Ape Project, and I happen to so approve of the Great Ape Project that readers of Amor Mundi will find a link to it in my blogroll, indeed will find that it is something to which I have drawn the attention of my students in many courses that touch on questions of nonhuman animal rights or environmental justice. That should come as no surprise to anybody who knows that I have been an ethical vegetarian for nearly twenty years, have written and taught extensively on animal rights questions, and so on. I wouldnt want anybody mistakenly to think I disdain the actually-existing and actually-important work of the Great Ape Project as a "form of eugenics and ...

The slaughterhouse closings themselves may have added to the population of the unwanted. In some parts of the country, auctioneers say, the closings have contributed to a drop in the price of horses at the low end of the market, and the added distance in the shipping of horses bound for slaughter, combined with higher fuel costs, means that some small or thin horses are no longer worth the fuel it takes to transport them ...

If pressed, Ill fully admit that Id be more upset over the killing of a gorilla or a dolphin or a dog vs a chicken or a fish or a mouse. A lot of that has to do with what their perceived behavior indicates about their awareness. I mentioned "experiencing" pain. Id like put the emphasis on experiencing. I dont think consciousness/awareness is an all or nothing thing, its most likely a sliding scale of which we seem to be at the top of right now. Not only is there the experience of feeling pain for us, but there is the awareness and knowledge of what is going on. I touched on this above, but we just dont know enough about what brings about consciousness to make any definitive determinations as to whether other animals experience "qualia", and using behavior is a poor but currently necessary substitute. Neuroscience can hopefully answer some of these questions for us. ...
