Feeding healthy animals with less antibiotics is a challenge for the future development of the European livestock industry. Consumers, retailers and administrative authorities are clearly issuing this information. In some countries, relevant measures have been implemented; in other countries, this discussion has just begun. N3r China Feed Industry Information Network - based on feed, serving animal husbandry The overall picture clearly shows that in Europe, sustainable animal husbandry and controlled use of small amounts of antibiotics will be a requirement in the future. N3r China Feed Industry Information Network - based on feed, serving animal husbandry What measures can be taken to achieve this goal? Obviously, it will not simply replace antibiotics with a single substitute. To achieve this goal, farmers have to adopt a multi-factor approach such as farm management, climate and sanitation. N3r China Feed Industry Information Network - based on feed, serving animal husbandry Nutrition is an ...

Grazing management is the total process of organising livestock to make the best use of the pastures grown, or managing the frequency and intensity with which livestock graze pasture.. Pastures respond differently to grazing, and by understanding the growth characteristics of a particular pasture, grazing can be used to encourage plant growth and maintain productivity.. Grazing management is also an important factor in the management of soil, water and nutrients. If not managed well, grazing can lead to severe natural resource degradation.. Some pastures may naturally become less productive as they mature or at different stages of their production cycle. It is important to recognise this and adjust stocking rates accordingly. Overstocking at critical stages may result in irreversible damage to pastures and the need for resowing.. ...

To reach the target, the ministry has issued a plan to supervise production chains to process export quality chicken. The domestic animal husbandry industry has supplied between 500,000 and 700,000 tonnes of meat and eight billion eggs per year but only salted duck eggs have been exported to Hong Kong and Singapore and the remaining was consumed in the domestic market, the ministry said.Nguyen Xuan Duong, deputy director of the Animal Husbandry Department, said that since 2015, with regard to the export of animal husbandry products, the industry had developed a plan to establish a safe region without diseases for poultry and cattle, for a certification of food safety from the veterinary department and meet regulations of the World Organisation for Animal Health that would help boost the export of meat to other countries. If the local enterprises receive permission to export chicken to Japan next year, it would be a good beginning for the local husbandry industry in exporting chicken to … [Read ...
Downloadable! The number of breeds of domesticated animals, especially livestock, have declined rapidly. The proximate causes and processes involved in loss of breeds are outlined. Also the path-dependent effect and Swansons dominance-effect are discussed in relation to lock-in of breed selection. While these effects help to explain genetic erosion, they need to be supplemented to provide further explanation of biodiversity loss. In the respect, it is shown that the extension of markets and economic globalisation have contributed significantly to the loss of breeds. In addition, the decoupling of animal husbandry from surrounding natural environmental conditions, particularly industrialised intensive animal husbandry, is further eroding the stock of genetic resources. Recent trends in animal husbandry raise serious sustainability issues, apart from animal welfare concerns.

We investigate biases in farm-level yield risk analysis caused by data aggregation from the farm-level to regional and national levels using the example of Swiss wheat and barley yields. The estimated yield variability decreases significantly with increasing level of aggregation, with crop yield variability at the farm-level being up to 2.38 times higher than indicated from national data. Our results show furthermore that inference on shape parameters based on aggregated data might be misleading. Using an example of farm yield insurance, we show that using crop yield variability estimates from aggregated levels leads to erroneous insurance contract specifications.

Chinas pig industry has been well developed un-der the background of this era. However, the number of pig diseases increases due to the influence of many factors, and highly pathogenic porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome(HP-PRRS) is one of the very common diseases, causing growing mortality rate of pigs. The disease increases the economic loss of pig industry to a large extent, and brings difficulties in prevention and control of pig diseases. The staff must analyze and sum-marize the basic characteristics of pig diseases, and combine some practical problems in prevention and control of pig disease to find effective mea-sures. The scope and ...

Livestock production is an important contributor to rural development. In the past two decades, developing countries have experienced changes in market structures, climate and demographic characteristics. These changes have been accompanied by fast growth in demand for livestock products and the increasing dependence on livestock for sustainable livelihood systems. In response to these changes, there has been rapid land use and land cover changes, characterized by expansion of agricultural land, and land fragmentation. This has caused environmental degradation in several rural areas, including the River Njoro watershed. Policy makers and development agents are therefore, facing a dilemma on trade-offs between meeting the expanding demand for livestock products and sustainable utilization of the limited stock of natural resources. At the backdrop of this dilemma, this study sought to identify and characterize livestock production systems in Njoro River watershed using principal components and cluster

When rainbow trout from a single breeding program are introduced into various production environments, genotype-by-environment (GxE) interaction may occur. Although growth and its uniformity are two of the most important traits for trout producers worldwide, GxE interaction on uniformity of growth has not been studied. Our objectives were to quantify the genetic variance in body weight (BW) and its uniformity and the genetic correlation (r g) between these traits, and to investigate the degree of GxE interaction on uniformity of BW in breeding (BE) and production (PE) environments using double hierarchical generalized linear models. Log-transformed data were also used to investigate whether the genetic variance in uniformity of BW, GxE interaction on uniformity of BW, and r g between BW and its uniformity were influenced by a scale effect. Although heritability estimates for uniformity of BW were low and of similar magnitude in BE (0.014) and PE (0.012), the
Intensive pig farming is a subset of pig farming and of Industrial animal agriculture, all of which are types of animal husbandry, in which livestock domestic pigs are raised up to slaughter weight. These operations are known as AFO or CAFO in the U.S. In this system of pig production, grower pigs are housed indoors in group-housing or straw-lined sheds, whilst pregnant sows are housed in gestation crates or pens and give birth in farrowing crates. The use of gestation crates for pregnant sows has resulted in lower birth production costs; however, this practice has led to more significant animal cruelty. Many of the worlds largest producers of pigs (US, Canada, China, Mexico) use gestation crates but some nations and nine US states have banned and removed these crates. The European Union has banned the use of gestation crates after the 4th week of pregnancy. Intensive piggeries are generally large warehouse-like buildings or barns. Indoor pig systems allow the pigs conditions to be monitored, ...
Information about amaranth germplasm adaptation to different environments, the relative contribution of genotype, importance of environment, and genotype by environment interaction will help improve breeding efficiency and lead to improved variety development. In this study, 26 diverse amaranth entries of different species were grown in replicated trials to assess their performance in vegetable yield when grown across five diverse Tanzanian locations differing in altitude, geographic coordinate, soil properties, and weather conditions, and in two distinct seasons, wet-cool and hot-dry seasons, and to characterize selection sites for different target amaranth production environments.. The importance of season on amaranth vegetable yield was evident, as its effects accounted for slightly more than 50% of the sum of squares of the main effects. In this study, mean yield (27.7 t·ha−1) across the hot-dry season trials was 47.3% greater than the mean yield (18.8 t·ha−1) over the wet-cool season ...
The ultraviolet aerodynamic particle sizer (UVAPS) is a novel aerosol counter for real-time monitoring of viable bioaerosols. The previous validation studies on the UVAPS were either laboratory based or were conducted outdoor with the artificially generated aerosols. In this study, the spectrometer was applied to investigate particulate pollution inside a swine confinement building (SCB). Real-time capabilities of the instrument were used to investigate the effect of on-farm-activities, such as an effluent flushing with recycled water, on aerosols load inside the SCB. In addition to the UVAPS, monitoring of viable bioaerosols (bacteria and fungi) was simultaneously conducted with the six-stage Andersen microbial impactor and the AGI-30 impingers. The UVAPS measurements showed that the concentrations of both viable (fluorescent) and total (fluorescent and non-fluorescent) particles inside the SCB were in order of 106-107particlesm-3. These concentrations were approximately seven times the outside ...

The aim of this thesis was to investigate contrasting pasture management strategies on the foraging behaviour, pasture production, carcass characteristics, herbage intake, faecal gas emissions and methane emission by sheep grazing Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) pastures. The experiment was carried out in 2014 and 2015. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with four replicates and two grazing strategy treatments (traditional rotational stocking method - RT meaning pre- and post-grazing target heights of 25 and 5 cm, respectively and, rotatinuous stocking - RN with pre- and post-grazing target heights of 18 and 11 cm, respectively). The grazing management was based on a 1-day strip-grazing regime. Male castrated sheep were used. The actual average sward heights for the RN treatment were 17.9 and 11.1 cm (pre- and post-grazing, respectively) and 27.1 and 7.8 cm for the RT (pre- and post-grazing, respectively). The stocking period in 2014 was 146 and 140 days (RN and RT, ...
They found that practices in the area of outdoor access, stocking density and day-night rhythm were overall perceived to have a larger impact on perceptions of animal friendliness than other practices, such as transport duration or the type of breed used.. Individuals differed regarding the extent to which they believed the different farm management practices influenced the animal friendliness of the production system. Differences between individuals regarding their knowledge about and familiarity with livestock farming, degree of anthropomorphism, and their moral beliefs regarding animal welfare partly explained the relative importance individuals attached to farm management practices.. The findings highlight some interesting differences between expert (i.e. animal science-based) and consumer perceptions of animal welfare, remark de Jonge and van Trijp in their discussion. For example, the type of breed that is used is seen by animal scientists as one of the most important factors that ...
Based on annual pork yield of each province in 1996-2014, using Gini coefficient and spatial polarization index model, empirical analysis was carried out for spatial imbalance and polarization degree of swine production distribution. Results indicate that there is high imbalance in spatial distribution of swine production. The imbalance takes on first rise then declines with fluctuation, largely because of inter-group gap. From the perspective of regions, the regions with balanced grain production have the highest imbalance in swine production, followed by main sales regions, and the main grain production regions have the lowest imbalance. The polarization index indicates that the overall polarization degree of the spatial distribution of swine production takes on a growing trend, and that of each functional region of grain production is also growing. The veterinarian in Africa has two rather different functions with regard to livestock health and development. The first is to provide health services to existing livestock populations in existing production systems. The second centres on the premise that a major need in Africa is the develop ment of livestock production; this implies changing existing production systems, and it is a function of the veterinarian to help bring about such changes. Introducing changes in any livestock production system involves interfering in a very complex process. Livestock production systems, like all other systems, consist of an assembly of related components which combine for some common purpose. It is simply not possible to change one component in isolation without affecting the other components of the system. For example, when building a dip the aspects that need to be taken into consideration are inputs, dipping and outputs. These aspects are closely interrelated and must be considered from a holistic point ...

The experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of stocking density and incremental methionine levels on performance, immune response, carcass traits, and digestive organs of broiler chicks. A total of 390 day-old broiler chicks (Ross 308) were allocated to six dietary treatments and five replicates base on 3 × 2 factorial arrangement in a completely randomized design. Experimental diets included three levels of stocking density (12, 16 and 18 birds/m2) and two levels of methionine (100 and 120% requirement recommended for Ross 308) applied during 42 days of experiment. The results showed that 18 birds density decreased body weight and weight gain, feed intake and increased feed conversion ratio (P|0.05) in overall rearing period. The 120% methionine level tended to increase body weight at 42 day of age. Stocking density significantly (P|0.05) affected the relative weight of proventriculus, pancreas, gizzard and duodenum. The jejunum relative weight and ileum length of chicks received 120%

In between April and June, at least 3,500 pigs were killed due to PRRS disease in Mizoram. The disease is largely contained since last week, an official of Mizorams animal husbandry and veterinary department said.. The official said the disease had spread to five of the eight districts in Mizoram - Champhai, Serchhip, Siaha, Lunglei and Lawngtlai.. The animal husbandry and veterinary department officials suspected that the viral disease spread in Mizoram after the entry of infected piglets from adjacent Myanmar.. This is the second PRRS outbreak in the northeastern state. In March-April 2013, the disease first spread in Mizoram killing over 3,000 pigs in six districts.. Mizoram has also stopped importing poultry, pigs and cattle from Myanmar and Bangladesh as well as other northeastern states due to the disease.. We have asked the district magistrates to take suitable steps in stopping import of chickens, birds, ducks, eggs, cattle and pigs from Bangladesh and neighbouring states of the ...

The probe into the death of more than 35 buffaloes in Chitrapuzha recently has come to a virtual halt with the Animal Husbandry Department deciding not to submit its post-mortem report to the Pollution Control Board (PCB).. The department decision was taken on the basis that the results of the post-mortem conducted on the buffaloes would not help PCB in finding out the actual cause behind the deaths. There is no need to correlate the test reports as the department probe has already indicated that the death may have occurred due to toxicity.. The PCB decision that a final conclusion on the cause could be reached only after correlating the results would only help in delaying the probe, official sources said.. A report prepared by experts of the Kerala Agricultural University (KAU), Mannuthy, had ruled out any contagious disease as the main cause for the deaths.. The Animal Husbandry Department tests were almost over and it was now left to the PCB to take a final decision based on their test ...
by Kirsten Patrick, Deputy Editor, CMAJ, in Victoria, BC. Human beings are often difficult to fathom. In a lecture about the health effects (present and expected) of climate change, David Fisman, infectious disease physician and epidemiologist from the University of Toronto, pointed out that getting people to care about - and take action to reduce - climate change is tough. This is because human beings tend not to like long time horizons. We are consistently happier to have things now and make payment later. Even when anyone with rudimentary imagination can, after being shown a little climate change data, see the likely catastrophic cost to human health of not pumping huge amounts of money into mitigating the effects of climate change NOW, we still collectively choose to do very little. The answer would seem to lie in learning how to influence deep-seated psychological desires, rather than trying to beat folks over the head with more data. Needless to say, Fismans lecture was scary, but he ...

Highly automated cage-rearing systems are becoming increasingly popular in China. However, a high stocking density can cause oxidative stress and decrease broiler performance. The tryptophan (TRP) derivative 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HT) has been shown to preserve membrane fluidity in birds suffering from oxidative stress. Therefore, this experiment was conducted to determine the effects of dietary TRP supplementation on performance, breast meat quality and oxidative stress in broilers reared in cages with a high or low stocking density. Female Arbor Acres broilers (25-d-old, n = 144) were randomly allocated to 1 of 4 treatments. The birds were fed a diet based on corn, soybean meal, cottonseed meal and corn gluten meal containing either 0.18 or 0.27% TRP and were housed with stocking densities of 11 or 15.4 birds/m2 in a 2 × 2 factorial experiment. Broiler performance was evaluated from d 25 to 42. Eight birds from each treatment were slaughtered on d 42 and plasma and breast muscle samples were
Efficient farming practices can help farmers grow their businesses and improve farm lands to become important engines of economic growth. However, land management can be challenging, especially for communities that are new to farming.. In communities near Vryheid in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, learning about farm management is helping farmers transform previously unused land into active and productive farms.. To help these communities develop farming businesses, the High Commission of Canada supported a recent project by the Lima Rural Development Foundation through the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI). Lima, a non-governmental organization based in South Africa, is helping five Community Property Associations (CPAs) near Vryheid reform their land into productive farms and establish farming businesses. ...
Feed conversion ratio (FCR) is the ratio of inputs to outputs; it is the inverse of feed efficiency which is the ratio of outputs to inputs.[2] FCR is widely used in hog and poultry production, while FE is used more commonly with cattle.[2] Being a ratio the FCR is dimensionless, that is, it is not affected by the units of measurement used to determine the FCR.[3] FCR a function of the animals genetics[4] and age,[5] the quality and ingredients of the feed,[5] and the conditions in which the animal is kept,[1][6] and storage and use of the feed by the farmworkers.[7] As a rule of thumb, the daily FCR is low for young animals (when relative growth is large) and increases for older animals (when relative growth tends to level out). However FCR is a poor basis to use for selecting animals to improve genetics, as that results in larger animals that costs more to feed; instead Residual Feed Intake (RFI) is used which is independent of size.[8] RFI uses for output the difference between actual ...
Reindeer husbandry is a cornerstone in the culture of the Sami, northern Scandinavias indigenous people. This paper presents a dynamic, theoretical model of the Swedish reindeer husbandry and the market for reindeer meat, as well as econometric results based on three-stage least squares regression on annual data. The most striking feature of the empirical results is a backward-sloping supply function, which is consistent with the theoretical model. The results also show effects of the Chernobyl accident. Prevailing winds at the time of the accident carried radioactive fallout over the grazing areas for the Swedish reindeer husbandry, causing effects on both supply and demand.. ...
Farmers Market vendors Joel and Carleen Weirauch are best known for their small-batch sheep cheese, but their farmstead creamery brings more than cheese to table. With an emphasis on community, humane animal husbandry practices, and sustainable agriculture Weirauch Farm exemplifies the quality and care found only at your local farmers markets.. Joel studied mycology at the Evergreen State College in Washington which led him to shadow cheesemakers in France. There he saw how cheese was an important part of the local culture and developed an affinity for the unique sheep cheeses that he encountered. He was inspired to bring that passion of cheese-making back to the States. Enter Carleen. She fell in love with Joel and his enthusiasm for sheep cheese. With her knowledge from raising sheep growing up, their fate was sealed. At the time of Weirauch Farm & Creamerys founding, there were only a handful of other sheep creameries in the state. Inspectors and state workers still werent sure how to ...
Officially recognised in 2006, the goal of the ORMEAUX project was to develop production of the ormer or European abalone in Brittany and, on a broader scale, to develop a European ormer-farming industry, initially by improving understanding of the species and its feeding and living habits, as well as the conditions required to produce it in a sound and sustainable way.. Project research led to the introduction of a genetic selection programme using molecular markers and to the first genetic mapping. Pathogen research resulted in a better understanding of pathologies and in development of an in vitro cell culture model for pathogen analysis.. The project partners also worked on optimising animal husbandry practices: transporting the spat, anaesthetising, artificial feed, farming in tanks, farming on the shoreline, perfecting tools for obesrving the behaviour of farmed ormer and designing a new type of boat exclusively for ormer farming in collaboration with the Navalu Company.. The ORMEAUX ...
Author: Written by Davis, K. C., M. W. Tess, D. D. Kress, D. E. Doornbos, and D. C. Anderson Journal: Journal of Animal Science, Oct 1994; 72: 2585 - 2590.. Abstract: Data collected during a 10-yr study at the Northern Agricultural Research Center (NARC), Havre, MT were used in construction of a simulation model to evaluate production systems using different breed groups. Five dam breed groups, straightbred Hereford (HH), 50% Angus-50% Hereford (AH), 25% Simmental-75% Hereford (1S3H), 50% Simmental-50% Hereford (1S1H), and 75% Simmental-25% Hereford (3S1H), were studied. The simulated system was a northern range cow-calf production system with spring calving and fall weaning. Replacement heifers were purchased and all calves were marketed at weaning. All nonpregnant females were sold in the fall. Statistical analyses of the data yielded input values (least squares means for breed group x age x sex subclasses) for cow and calf weights, pregnancy rate, dystocia, and calf survival. Pregnancy, ...
Animal welfare is about quality of life. An animal feels most comfortable in an environment that allows it to express its natural behaviour and does not cause any chronic stress, pain or fear. Feed, care, housing and medical treatments all influence the welfare of agricultural animals. Animal welfare is judged using the five freedoms. An animal should be free: of hunger, thirst and inappropriate nutrition; of physical and physiological inconveniences; of pain, wounds and diseases; of fear and chronic stress; to express its natural (species-specific) behaviour. Wageningen UR is looking at ways to guarantee these freedoms in animal husbandry.
The UKs animal welfare and food production standards are among the highest in the world. (1) The majority of our current animal welfare legislation comes from the EU, including the recognition of animals as sentient beings - this means we recognise animals have the capacity to feel pain or suffer. The laws in the USA regarding animal husbandry and food production permit lower standards than in th

The National Bee Farm-level Biosecurity Standard forms the basis of a comprehensive voluntary program designed to provide practical guidance for owners or managers involved in the three main Canadian bee sectors: honey bees, alfalfa leafcutting bees, and bumblebees. The National Standard has been developed as a tool for all people and businesses handling and keeping bees. This Producer Guide provides practical guidance to alfalfa leafcutting beekeepers on how a series of target outcomes, associated with each topic covered by the National Standard, may be achieved.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), in collaboration with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), the Canadian Potato Council (CPC) of the Canadian Horticultural Council (CHC), the potato industry sector organizations, and provincial Departments of Agriculture, initiated the development of a voluntary National Farm-Level Biosecurity Standard and producer guidance document for potato growers.

This paper employs Q methodology to investigate farmer opinions of the operation of the EU Nitrates Directive regulations after the first 4 year National Action Programme phase and explores the level of acceptance and refutation of measures from the view of farmers own knowledge and experience of land stewardship. Results indicate 4 main opinion groups. A Constrained Productionistsgroup remain unconvinced about the appropriateness of certain measures from a farm management, environmental and water quality perspective. A second group Concerned Practitioners share some of these concerned but are generally more positive regarding other farm management and environmental benefits accruing from the regulations. A third group, Benefit Accepters, indicated quite an environmentalist position and are generally very positive towards regulation implementation and associated environmental and farm management benefits. The final group Regulation Unaffected have some concerns but are mostly unaffected ...
Estimates of water productivity are appearing with increasing frequency in the literature pertaining to agronomy, water management, and water policy. Some authors report such estimates as one of the outcome variables of experiment station studies, while others calculate water productivities when comparing regional crop production information. Many authors suggest or imply that higher values of water productivity are needed to ensure that future food production goals are achieved. Yet maximizing water productivity might not be consistent with farm-level goals or with societal objectives regarding water allocation and management. Farmers in both rainfed and irrigated settings must address a complex set of issues pertaining to risk, uncertainty, prices, and opportunity costs, when selecting activities and determining optimal strategies. It is not clear that farmers in either setting will or should choose to maximize water productivity. Upon examining water productivity, both conceptually and empirically,
In Field Exchange 1 we reported on the nutritional problems of workers on Zimbabwes large commercial farms. After 17 years of independence many Zimbabwean workers still find themselves landless and working on these large white owned farms. The article written by Leslie Adams, who works as a nutritionist with the MOH, reported that children living in large scale commercial farms are twice as likely to suffer from undernutrition than children living in communal areas.. Recent events in Zimbabwe suggest the situation will soon change. President Robert Mugabes government announced late last year that there will be a compulsory purchase from the countys commercial farmers of some 5.5 million hectares. This adds up to some 20% of Zimbabwes arable land. The government move will close 1,700 of the 4,500 commercial farms in the country. The owners of the land, mainly white farmers, will be compensated for infrastructure built on the land but will not receive payment for the land itself. President ...
Malwarebytes, the popular cybersecurity services company, has confirmed that it has suffered a cyberattack by the same threat actors that caused the security incidents stemming from the SolarWinds software.. On 15th of December, Microsofts Security Response Centre alerted Malwarebytes to suspicious activity in a third party application within its Microsoft Office 365 product, whereby the attacker gained access to a limited subset of internal emails. The application corresponds to an inactive email protection product.. In response, the company launched an investigation by its Incident Response Team and Microsofts Detection and Response Team (DART), which has analysed cloud and local environments.. So far, the investigation concludes that no evidence has been found that any local or production environments have been compromised.. For its part, the company has also stated that its software product remains secure and that it does not use Azures cloud services in production environments.. ...
