Animal languages are forms of non-human animal communication that show similarities to human language. Animals communicate by using a variety of signs such as sounds or movements. Such signing may be considered complex enough to be called a form of language if the inventory of signs is large, the signs are relatively arbitrary, and the animals seem to produce them with a degree of volition (as opposed to relatively automatic conditioned behaviors or unconditioned instincts, usually including facial expressions). In experimental tests, animal communication may also be evidenced through the use of lexigrams (as used by chimpanzees and bonobos). While the term animal language is widely used, researchers agree that animal languages are not as complex or expressive as human language. Many researchers argue that animal communication lacks a key aspect of human language, that is, the creation of new patterns of signs under varied circumstances. (In contrast, for example, humans routinely produce ...

Zoosemiotics is the semiotic study of the use of signs among animals, more precisely the study of semiosis among animals, i.e. the study of how something comes to function as a sign to some animal.[1] It is the study of animal forms of knowing.[2]. Considered part of biosemiotics, zoosemiotics is related to the fields of ethology and animal communication. It was developed by semiotician Thomas Sebeok based on the theories of German-Estonian biologist Jakob von Uexküll.[3][4] The field is defined by having as its subject matter all of those semiotic processes that are shared by both animals and humans.[5] The field also differs from the field of animal communication in that it also interprets signs that are not communicative in the traditional sense, such as camouflage, mimicry, courtship behavior etc. The field also studies cross-species communication, for example between humans and animals.[6]. ...
Iceman, a 17-year-old thoroughbred gelding (pictured above), who is a grandson of the great Northern Dancer. In his earlier days, Iceman was quite an athlete himself, having had a successful career as a high-ranking jumper and three-day eventer. But by the time he got to EPONA, he had been the victim of long-term neglect. He was diagnosed with Uveitis, or Moon Blindness, and had lost the vision in one of his eyes. The damage caused by the inflammation in the grand geldings eyes made it necessary to remove them. Though completely blind, Iceman has led a happy life romping in the paddock with his seeing-eye companions, including Prize (below ...

He came in with Joe this morning and landed on my bed blankets. I imediatelly set up a boundary thinking in my head do not come near my face or you will get killed! That said I let him fly and waited. I was reading my Kindle and drinking coffee. He aproached cautiously. Then he landed on the Kindle. He walked around the rim of the reader for over half an hour! I read 2 chapters and sipped my coffee. I asked him with my thoughts why arent you outside with the others? The Fly Friend told my thoughts Because I dont fly straight and they dont like me And I dont like to eat dog poop! YUCK! I want proper food! Real food Ok I said in my thoughts there is a new wrapper of a granola bar in the garbage if you want that He said I dont like garbage left overs either..I said suite yourself and continued reading. He kept hopping from my covers to the Kindle and walking around. Finally it was time for my shower. Ok im done with my coffee I thought and no sooner had the thought left my head ...
We found that hockey players can use stick-banging to indicate anything from disagreement with a referee to encouragement of their teammates, said lead researcher Dr. Margaret Cundiff, who explained that players typically strike the boards a single time with force when they want to display anger, or use multiple softer taps in order to display approval. Sometimes, an entire bench full of players will begin banging the boards in unison-either signaling that a goal has occurred, or that the players want a goal to occur. This actually lets hockey players speak to each other, if you will, in surprisingly complex ways far beyond what was previously anticipated. They are truly magnificent creatures ...

There is a term called honest signalling in evolutionary biology. It is not a new insight, but it is going to form basis for some of the key discussions we are going to have in the future.. Peacocks tail is a wonderful example of a honest signal. The luxury of the tail fathers correlates well with the fitness level of the animal which carries it. A peacock with lower fitness cant fake a luxurious tail feathers. So, peahens have come to use the fitness of the tail feathers as a primary mate selection criteria.. Gazelles are known to stot (quadruple jumping) in the presence of a predator. By stotting, the gazelles signal their fitness level to the predator (Hey, look, I am very fit. No use chasing me. Find someone else easy). As a weaker animal cant stot as well as a fitter animal, stotting turns out to be a honest signal.. In humans, wealth indicators are easily understandable honest signals. A Rolls Royce car is a honest signal of ones financial resources. Or, a Nobel prize is a reliable ...

Most of the studied mechanical features of the waggle dance varied considerably with both sugar concentration and solution flow rate (Figs 2, 3, 5, 6; Tables 1, 2, 3). In particular, we observed significant differences in the recruiters excitement between low-profit and high-profit food sources (behavioural threshold in our study: concentration ≥25% sugar w/w; solution flow ≥9 μl min-1; Figs 3, 6; Tables 1, 2, 3), but not among low-profit sources (solution flows: 2.5 and 5.5 μl min-1; Fig. 6; Table 3), or high-profit sources (sugar concentrations: 25% and 50% w/w; solution flows: 9.0 and 17.5 μl min-1; 12.0 and 17.5 μl min-1; Figs 3, 6; Tables 1, 2, 3). These findings suggest that the waggle dances, and, more importantly, the thoracic vibrations as potential information carriers, indicate the motivational state of a dancing forager rather than signalling the exact profitability of a food source.. The motivational state of a honey bee forager depends on her subjective evaluation of a ...
Even if there is some set of sounds which some species of animal is capable of responding to in the same way that we humans respond to the set of sounds that we call music, it may not be the same set of sounds. In other words, animal music may be different from human music, and if so, it will be different for each species of animal. Furthermore, human music is distinct from normal human communication sounds (i.e. speech and a few other things), so animal music is also likely to be distinct from normal animal communication sounds. Finally, human music is very difficult even for humans to compose, so we might suppose that animal music is difficult to compose, and, non-human animals being generally less talented in intellectual fields than humans, it is entirely possible that no animal has ever composed a single item of animal music ...
To better understand the complex relationship between animal communication, sexual selection, and kin selection, we propose to integrate ontogenetic, functional, and causational investigations of olfactory communication in the ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta), a promiscuous and highly social primate. This project will expand upon our understanding of lemur scent marking, which is linked to sexual selection, mate choice, and nepotism in this species, by investigating how complex olfactory signals develop and are maintained. Specifically, chemical data (obtained via GCMS of glandular secretions) amassed over the past ten years will be analyzed to explore the development and proximate mechanisms underlying the expression of odorant profiles. The resulting findings will then be considered in conjunction with previous studies on the ultimate function and evolutionary history of lemur olfactory communication to provide a comprehensive review of lemur olfactory communication in the context of sexual and ...
With the rise in social media use, emojis have become a popular addition to text-based communication. The sudden increase in the number and variety of emojis used raises questions about how individuals interpret messages containing emojis. To explore perceptions of emoji usage, we conducted a 2 (Sender Gender: Female or Male) × 2 (Emoji Type: Affectionate or Friendly) between-groups experiment to examine the appropriateness and likability of each of four hypothetical text messages sent to a woman from either a male or female coworker. In general, we predicted that text messages containing affectionate emojis (i.e., kissing-face and heart emoji) would be perceived as more appropriate and likable when they came from female than from male senders, whereas messages containing less overtly affectionate (but still friendly) emojis (i.e., smiling-face emoji) would be considered equally appropriate and likable whether it came from female or male senders. As predicted, the results confirmed that texts with

This book is an entry into the fierce current debate among psycholinguists, neuroscientists, and evolutionary theorists about the nature and origins of human language. A prominent neuroscientist here takes up the Darwinian case, using data seldom considered by psycholinguists and neurolinguists to argue that human language--though more sophisticated than all other forms of animal communication--is not a qualitatively different ability from all forms of animal communication, does not require a quantum evolutionary leap to explain it, and is not unified in a single language instinct. Using clinical evidence from speech-impaired patients, functional neuroimaging, and evolutionary biology to make his case, Philip Lieberman contends that human language is not a single separate module but a functional neurological system made up of many separate abilities. Language remains as it began, Lieberman argues: a device for coping with the world. But in a blow to human narcissism, he makes the case that ...
New surprises revealing complex bio-engineering keep emerging as evolutionary scientists continue to unwittingly obey the biblical command to observe the ant(Proverbs 6:6; 30:25). The latest bio-engineering discovery is that a key component of ant colony survival is based on sound (acoustic) communication systems.1. One of the long-standing paradigms of animal communication is the use of airborne chemical messages called pheromones. Ants use pheromones to leave chemical trails that can be followed by other members and to also identify which nest an ant is from, along with its social status in the colony. Now, scientists can add yet another layer of complexity and communication in ant colonies based on acoustics.. Scientists have been studying a type of ant commonly found in Europe. This ant has a specialized appendage on its abdomen that it strokes with its hind legs to create sound signals. Other ants can detect and process these signals, resulting in various complex social responses that are ...

Linguistics is the scientific study of language and is concerned with the following questions (among others): What does knowledge of a language consist in and how is this knowledge acquired and put to use? What are the similarities and differences among languages? How is language represented in the human brain? How does language differ from animal communications systems? How does language function in society? How and why does language change over time? In addition, linguistics is applied in the teaching of languages and in education generally, in computer programming, in advertising, and in many other areas of study and activity in which language plays a central role.. TY - JOUR. T1 - Heuristic Solution of a Signal Design Optimization Problem. AU - Kernighan, B. W.. AU - Lin, S.. PY - 1973/9. Y1 - 1973/9. N2 - This paper discusses a heuristic solution procedure for a combinatorial optimization problem that originates in designing signal constellations for modems. The design problem is to place m signals in a two‐dimensional space to minimize the average error rate under specified noise conditions, using a maximum‐likelihood decoding scheme. Intuitively, it amounts (roughly) to spreading the signal points as far apart as possible, according to the distance measurement implied by the noise function. We show how this problem can be reduced to a discrete one: Given an ℓ by n matrix P, and m , ℓ, find an m‐row subset M = {i1, ···, im} of the rows of P that maximizes (Formula Presented.) and then describe an efficient procedure for finding this maximizing set. Experiments indicate that the procedure is a useful tool, both for analysis of existing and ...

Graphic design is the organization of visual communication, not always for persuasive selling.. Applied art is meant to accomplish a purpose beyond the personal esthetic statement of its creator. The creative production as well as the final appearance of fine art and applied art are often identical. The difference is in the intent. The fine artist must only satisfy self whereas the applied artist must respond to the needs of an external audience. The applied artist may be expected to move millions of people to read a sign, understand a concept or follow a map.. The graphic designer becomes a partner in the communication of a clients ideas, concepts, and information. The designers role is to effectively and efficiently enhance, clarify, and expedite the visual display of information.. Graphic designers use type, illustration, photography, and symbols to achieve visual solutions that are functional, elegant, simple, and economical to get most people in a target group to respond positively to a ...

In a system for performing an action regarding an account comprising entity information in response to an electronic communication received from a sender by a receiver, wherein the electronic communication includes sender identity information associated with the account and a digital signature derived from an electronic message using a private key of a public-private key pair, and wherein the public key of the pair has been associated with the account by the receiver such that the public key is retrievable based on the sender identity information, a method of validating the identity of the sender for the electronic communication includes: (a) retrieving the public key based on the received sender identity information; and (b) comparing a function of the public key and the digital signature with a function of the electronic message. Neither a PIN nor a password is required to be transmitted to the receiver for validating the identity of the sender.

was one of the first graduates of Visual Communication who was trained to write copy. She entered the advertising business as a copywriter and rose from the ranks to become a Creative Director in Ace-Compton (now Saatchi and Saatchi). She then moved to join Lintas Manila (now Mullen Lowe) before moving to lead the creative team of Lintas in Jakarta, Indonesia. The 21 year stint in Jakarta made her realize that ideas dont have a nationality and the great ideas are those based on human insights that delve into the mind and hearts of the people who use the brands.. She moved laterally and became one of the early Agency Heads from Creative who led the advertising agency as CEO. She saw the growth of the advertising business in Jakarta from pure print and outdoor to a robust multi-media communications power house in Asia. They were exciting times in Indonesia and it was a time for pioneering ideas like starting a TV-show production unit as well as a below-the-line activation group within the agency. ...
Spot patterns do not change as an animal ages, which allows researchers to identify individuals based on their unique patterns. The researchers found that two of 11 spot traits measured were significantly similar in the mother animals and their calves: Circularity, i.e. how close the spot is to a perfect circle, and solidity, which refers to how smooth and complete the edges are.. Large spots improve chances of survival. The study also found that newborn giraffes with larger and irregularly shaped spots had a better chance of surviving the first few months of life. This increased survival rate likely indicates that these young animals have better camouflage, but it could also be related to other survival-enhancing factors, such as temperature regulation or visual communication. We were able to show that spot patterns affect the survival of young animals and that theyre inherited - passed from a mother to its calf, says Bond.. ...

Usability research projects in our Professional Communication graduate program are actually divided between 3 different facilities. Our first facility was completed in 1992 and was called the Document Design Laboratory (DDL). In these pre-WWW days, the DDL was loosely based on Dr. Dixie Goswamis experiences at the American Institute for Research and used then state-of-the-art desktop publishing hardware and software to study page design and visual communication issues from a user-centered perspective.. In 1994, the Usability Testing Facility (UTF) was constructed to meet the demands for sponsored, proprietary research on designing online documentation, web-based systems, and 3-dimensional interfaces. The UTF was and still is equipped with SVHS video cameras and a cuts-only editing suite for analog work. However, as digital video capture and editing technologies have improved, the facility has been upgraded so that we now support a wide variety of media and digital formats, allowing us to ...

Thorns on the Acacia plant are no deterrent to a giraffe, who have a long, prehensile tongue (18 inches), thick gluey saliva, and special upper palate shape that allow them to process thorny foods. As a ruminant with a four-chambered stomach, they are able to process the hard-to-digest vegetation they consume. Because they rely on the dew and water content of their food, giraffe can go weeks without drinking water. Their long necks allow them to browse at the tops of plants without having to compete with other animals. Their neck veins contain valves to prevent blackouts when the animal lowers its head to drink. In addition to keeping track of predators, their extreme long-range visual acuity enables visual communication with giraffe over several miles. Giraffe can run at speeds up to 35 mph. ...

Ruud Janssen (1951) studied graphic and typographic design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and was still a student of renowned letter designer Gerrit Noordzij. He entered, in fact coincidentally, the world of the deaf and their sign language after an assignment to photograph hands. When he came into contact with it in the early 1980s, sign language did not officially exist according to the director of a deaf institute. In 1985 Janssen, together with Tony Bloem, founded Vi-taal and De Gebarenwinkel, a design agency for visual communication and specialised in sign language. Among other activities, they partnered with tien museums in The Hague to launch ten films in sign language for the videoproject Haagse Kunstgrepen (2012), advised policy makers and produced dozens of publications such as Gebarentaal (2005), Handalfabet (1986) and Foei, Poes! (1988) to bring attention to the Dutch sign language across different age groups ...
Daniel Grumer is a UX designer at a start-up company in Tel-Aviv, Israel. He studied Visual Communication at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, and created his hybrid font Abraham during his degree.. Design Week: Whats your inspiration behind Abraham?. Daniel Grumer: Abraham is a dual-alphabet font containing both Hebrew and Arabic characters, which aims to display both languages in a visually equitable manner. I designed it as my Bachelor project, while studying in Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. The inspiration and motivation came from local street signs, which display all three official languages of Israel (Hebrew, Arabic and English). These signs lack the typographic sensitivity I, as a designer, expect them to have. It is clear to see that we all live here, speakers of Hebrew, Arabic and English, but as the signs suggest, separately.. DW: What does Abraham look like?. DG: The main feature of the Abraham typeface is that text in Arabic can be placed alongside text in ...
Perhaps we are not the only animals who use language. Dr. Terrence Deacon, a neuroscientist at the University of California, Berkeley, who also is an expert in animal communication, notes, I dont see a fundamental white line that distinguishes us from other animals. Only time and research will tell if were alone in the language arena. For now its a good idea to keep the door wide open. Cultural hitchhiking: Was there a sponging Eve? Am informative summary of the research on the genetics of tool use in dolphins living in Shark Bay in Western Australia can be found in an article called Cultural hitchhiking: How social behavior can affect genetic makeup in dolphins. It turns out that the culturally transmitted use of sponges -- called vertical social transmission -- can actually shape the genetic makeup of wild dolphins. Dolphins, who live deep in the bay, show mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) types called Haplotype E or Haplotype F that are inherited solely from the mother, whereas ...
Vocal sequences - utterances consisting of calls produced in close succession - are common phenomena in animal communication. While many studies have explored the adaptive benefits of producing such sequences, very little is known about how the costs and constraints involved in their production affect their form. Here, we investigated this issue in the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) pant hoot, a long and structurally complex vocal sequence comprising four acoustically distinct phases - introduction, build-up, climax and let-down. We found that in each of these phases, and for the sequence as a whole, there was a negative relationship between the number of calls produced and their average duration. There was also a negative relationship between the total duration of some adjacent phases. Significant relationships between the fundamental frequency of calls and their number or duration were found for some phases of the sequence, but the direction of these relationships differed between
4. ANIMAL COMMUNICATIONS. Most students have been introduced to the ways in which humans communicate. People who share a common language communicate by speaking or writing. But humans do not rely solely on words in their day-to-day communications. Non-verbal communications, body language and gestures convey information. In fact some sources estimate that only 7% communication is based on language and the remainder of the communication comes from the speakers body language, facial expression, and vocal tone and pitch. Like humans, other species communicate with their own kind in different ways, some similar to humans and some different. Observing gorillas or mandrills (in the Africa pavillion) provides an opportunity to observe body language and social behaviour. Even crocodiles use body posture, slapping the water with their jaws, or blowing bubbles to reinforce status within their group.. Chameleons (also in the Africa pavillion) communicate using body colour! Desert lizards (in Americas) ...

Visual communication skills are alien to some in the research industry, but they neednt be. Data visualisation can become part of the research process through smart hiring, skills training and expert partnerships.Data visualisation should not be regarded as an end in itself; the real point to data visualisation - the value that it brings to research buyers and suppliers - is as an aid to storytelling. Its about seeing the patterns in the data that flush out a story and then help you to start telling that story. Only by doing that can you move data off the spreadsheet and out into the real world of consumer behaviour and preferences. The best analogy and the one used frequently, is with journalism. Its no surprise either that many great examples of data visualisation come from the publishing and media sectors. Journalists face the same challenge that we do of sifting large amounts of often conflicting data to arrive at a truth or an insight... | visual data
Abstract (Full Article Here). Huia cavitympanum, an endemic Bornean frog, is the first amphibian species known to emit exclusively ultrasonic (i.e., >20 kHz) vocal signals. To test the hypothesis that these frogs use purely ultrasonic vocalizations for intraspecific communication, we performed playback experiments with male frogs in their natural calling sites. We found that the frogs respond with increased calling to broadcasts of conspecific calls containing only ultrasound. The field study was complemented by electrophysiological recordings from the auditory midbrain and by laser Doppler vibrometer measurements of the tympanic membranes response to acoustic stimulation. These measurements revealed that the frogs auditory system is broadly tuned over high frequencies, with peak sensitivity occurring within the ultrasonic frequency range. Our results demonstrate that H. cavitympanum is the first non-mammalian vertebrate described to communicate with purely ultrasonic acoustic signals. These ...
I am a 29 year old female. I noticed I had lost the ability to form mental images about two months after I gave birth to my son this past October. Up until this point I had always been able to form full color mental images, movie like scenarios, and dreamed vividly. I have a degree in Visual Communication and specialized in drawing informational graphics and graphic design. I love to draw. I also have a teaching degree in English. I love to read and have always mentally pictured what I read. I am right handed, but can do most things with both hands. I have type O negative blood. I have had two experiences where I believed I saw UFOs.(lol - yeah yeah i know its crazy) I am super sensitive to noise, uneven lighting, and I react emotionally to smells. I even have emotional reactions to certain colors. About five years ago I experienced what I personally labeled panic attacks. I sought help in counseling because I would wake daily with feelings of extreme grief like I had lost a close family ...
The ophthalmology community doesnt have the best track record in treating strabismus or visual delays but if one of their sources come up with useful and undogmatic diagnostic information, I gladly share it. Graphic designers use images and type to convey ideas in exciting and engaging design works. Graphic Design is a specific field in which a graphic designer employs image and type to organize visual elements and text effectively and clearly using a concept. Visual Communication is a more general field in which a designer uses letterform and visual elements, such as color and shape, to communicate visually and verbally a specific message.. A graphic artist then mechanically reproduces the art made by design artists for mass printing. The intent of this visual arts program is to function as the first two foundation years of a four- or five-year design curricula at another institution after completing the A.S. degree requirements.. This program may be used as the basis for many design specific fields, such as illustration, typographic design, computer graphics, multi-media, web design, product and package design, interior design, textile design, art direction, publication and poster design. ...

In choosing to paint these everyday objects Jo is elevating them to items of importance and freezing them in time like in a Victorian glass dome. This theme of making objects appear more beautiful than they are (kalopsia) runs throughout her work.. Jo invites the viewer into her paintings to form their own connections with these items and so continue their story. Her Artwork is in many ...

Earlier this week the Panorama documentary featuring Kay Gilderdale, titled I Helped My Daughter Die, won the Medical Journalists Associations best broadcast TV award at their Winter Awards 2011 (the MJA dont actually announce the winners of their own awards, which seems a bit odd), which were presented at the Wellcome Collection galleries in Euston Road, London last Wednesday. Press Gazette reports that the award actually went to Ray Tostevin, the director, but the GRACE Productions company blows its own trumpet for the award without mentioning that the prize actually went to the director individually. The programme also won the IVCA (International Visual Communications Association) Clarion Award last year in the television section.. Ive said this before, and Ill say it again: I dont think this programme did the subject justice. Admittedly, there is only so much you can fit into a documentary running to just under 30 minutes, which is the BBCs fault, not the producers, but it was a ...

Human communication systems evolve culturally, but the evolutionary mechanisms that drive this evolution are not well understood. Against a baseline that communication variants spread in a population following neutral evolutionary dynamics (also known as drift models), we tested the role of two cultural selection models: coordination- and content-biased. We constructed a parametrized mixed probabilistic model of the spread of communicative variants in four 8-person laboratory micro-societies engaged in a simple communication game. We found that selectionist models, working in combination, explain the majority of the empirical data. The best-fitting parameter setting includes an egocentric bias and a content bias, suggesting that participants retained their own previously used communicative variants unless they encountered a superior (content-biased) variant, in which case it was adopted. This novel pattern of results suggests that (i) a theory of the cultural evolution of human communication ...
So far, only about 400 species, subspecies, and chromosome races of 15 subfamilies of Tettigoniidae have been studied karyologically, this constituting about 7% of all described species in this group. An attempt was made to establish the basic diploid chromosome numbers of Tettigoniidae and, considering chromosome number, morphology, and the sex determining mechanisms, to suggest how karyotype evolution in the particular subfamilies could have occurred ...
The contraction-relaxation cycle in muscle is regulated by the release of Ca2+ from, and its uptake by, the SR (Ebashi and Endo, 1968). In fish sound-producing muscles, the maximum frequency of sound produced is determined by the maximum frequency of twitch fusion, which is primarily dependent on the rate of relaxation of twitch tension, which is dependent on the rate of Ca2+ uptake by the SR (Skoglund, 1959). In accordance with this view, the fractional SR volume in the sound-producing muscle fibres, including the SBM fibres, is much larger than that in skeletal muscle fibres (Peachey and Porter, 1959; Fawcett and Revel, 1961; Revel, 1962; Franzini-Armstrong, 1972; Appelt et al., 1991; Suzuki et al., 2003).. Twitches produced by repetitive motor nerve stimulation of the SBM tend to decrease rapidly with time (Fig. 5A), as has also been reported by Hidaka and Toida (1969). This may result, at least in part, from the myoplasmic Ca2+ concentration gradually decreasing during repetitive motor nerve ...
