The most important thing to remember regarding field safety is that all the same requirements and regulations that must be followed in labs and animal facilities must also be adhered to in the field! This includes proper handling, storage, labeling, shipping, and disposal of all materials and appropriate use of PPE. Field work with animals has the same risks as work conducted in animal facilities, but those risks are compounded by risks associated with climate/weather, terrain, native plants, insects, wildlife and distance from help. Work with your unit safety officer and/or EHSRM to assess the risk factors associated with your specific location(s) and activities. The UA Statewide Office of Risk Management has published two documents related to remote travel: the UA Remote Travel Safety Guide and the UA Remote Travel Planning & Resource Guide. These documents provide excellent suggestions on how to prepare and pack for remote travel and address the most common health and safety risks encountered ...
c. Lyme Disease: Lyme disease (Borrelia burghdorferi) is a bacterium commonly infecting deer, white footed mice, and possibly other species that is transmitted to humans by ticks or occasionally by direct contact with the infected vertebrate. You must have a tick drinking your blood for at least 16 hours to contract this disease. Removal of a tick before that length of time is preventative. A reddish halo (bulls eye ring around the bite) sometimes forms approximately 2-12 weeks following a tick bite, and is the earliest sign of Lyme disease. After this, severe illness may develop including: heart inflammation with arrhythmia, arthritis, and nervous system disorders including peripheral nerve dysfunction.. d. Plague: Plague is cause by the bacterium, Yersinia pestis. The pathogen is transmitted by fleas but it also can be transmitted from human to human in its pneumonic form (a lung infection). Plague primarily is a disease of rodents. However, in Montana, the bacteria thrive in prairie dog ...

Animal welfare in the United Kingdom relates to the treatment of animals in fields such as agriculture, hunting, medical testing and the domestic ownership of animals. It is distinct from animal conservation. The Animal Welfare Act 2006 is the latest animal welfare legislation in England and Wales. It superseded and consolidated more than 20 other pieces of legislation, such as the Protection of Animals Act 1934 and the Abandonment of Animals Act 1960. The 2006 Act introduced tougher penalties for neglect and cruelty, including fines of up to £20,000, a maximum jail term of 51 weeks and a lifetime ban on some owners keeping pets. Enforcers of the act such as the police or local authority inspectors (but not organisations such as the RSPCA) have more powers to intervene if they suspect a pet is being neglected. The Animal Welfare Act 2006 also introduced a welfare offence for the first time. This places a duty of care on pet owners to provide for their animals basic needs, such as adequate food ...
Any research, teaching, or creative activity that involves the use of vertebrate animals must be approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) prior to ordering animals and prior to commencement of the activity. Applications for such approval may be obtained from the director of the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR) or from the Univer-sity coordinator for research compliance. The chairs, deans, and division heads of departments in which laboratory animals are routinely used also have a supply of these applications.. The following is a brief summary of the federal, state, and campus regulations that govern the use of laboratory animals at Stony Brook:. 1. Except as stated in provision 2, all vertebrate animals must be ordered through DLAR. If a University purchase order is unacceptable to the supplier, the DLAR must be so informed in order to determine whether another supplier may be contacted.. 2. The IACUC may waive the requirement of mandatory acquisition of ...
Animal experimentation is a crucial component of scientific research and education. Most advances in modern biomedical science can be traced back to original studies in animals. The university continues to support this critical research while fully appreciating its additional complexities.. All animal research must be approved by the universitys Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), which works close with the Comparative Medicine-Laboratory Animal Facilities (CM-LAF) to help researchers develop effective and compliant protocols. ...

In an effort to increase privacy protections for research participants, as of October 1, 2017, researchers who are collecting identifiable, sensitive information as part of their NIH-funded research will automatically be issued a Certificate of Confidentiality (CoC) as part of the terms and conditions of the award. Researchers conducting NIH-funded research qualifiying for a CoC will no longer need to separately apply for a CoC. Compliance with the privacy protections afforded by the CoC is also a term and condition of the award. All research that was commenced or ongoing on or after December 13, 2016 and is within the scope of this NIH policy was issued a certificate.. Non-NIH funded research that collects identifiable, sensitive information can request a certificate using the Online Certificate of Confidentiality system. Note: the system and process for requesting a CoC was updated and simplified in 2020. The new CoC system requires direct submission by the authorized institutional official, ...
Figure 1 shows the association of date with number of R01 applications received by NIH for consideration in the May 2015 council round, the latest round for which complete award data are available. The primary R01 receipt date for new, unrevised applications was October 6, 2014. NIH received 2,788 applications through October 5, the day before the deadline; an additional 2068, or 43% of the total, came in on the October 6 due date. Even among the applications received before the deadline, the vast majority came in the week before. It may be worth noting that it is an institutional official, usually in the office of sponsored programs that is responsible for submit the applications. So PIs may have completed their application earlier, but may not have built in enough time for the authorized organizational official to process and submit the application earlier.. Perhaps submission patterns are more timely for small business applications. Figure 2 shows corresponding data for Small Business ...

Recordings were made from adult C57BL/6 mice, 2-6 months of age. The animals were maintained in the animal facility at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and used in accordance with protocols approved by the UCSF Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. For surgery, mice were sedated with an intraperitoneal injection of chlorprothixene (5 mg/kg) and then anesthetized with urethane (0.5-1.0 g/kg, i.p., at 10% w/v in saline). Administration of chlorprothixene several minutes before urethane greatly reduced the dosage of urethane necessary to induce surgical anesthesia. Additionally, atropine (0.3 mg/kg) and dexamethasone (2 mg/kg) were administered subcutaneously to reduce secretions and edema, respectively. The animal was maintained at 37.5°C by a feedback-controlled heating pad. A tracheotomy was performed, and a small glass capillary tube was inserted to maintain a free airway. After retracting the scalp, we performed a small craniotomy, ∼1 mm in diameter, and nicked a slit ...

An adenovirus expressing inducible TRAIL was constructed as described previously (29, 40, 41). Briefly, the full-length TRAIL was first cloned into the BamHI polylinker site of a TRE vector (Clontech, Palo Alto, California, USA) site. The TRE-regulated TRAIL fragment, including the bovine growth hormone poly-A tail, was then excised with XhoI and HindIII, followed by insertion into the Klenow-filled NotI site of the pShuttleCMV, leading to the production of pShuttleTRAIL. The recombinant Ad AdTRAIL was produced by in vitro recombination of ...
Selective modulation of α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) is thought to regulate processes impaired in schizophrenia, Alzheimers disease, and other dementias. One approach to target α7 nAChRs is by positive allosteric modulation. Structurally diverse compounds, including PNU-120596, 4-naphthalene-1-yl-3a,4,5,9b-tetrahydro-3-H-cyclopenta[c]quinoline-8-sulfonic acid amide (TQS), and 5-hydroxyindole (5-HI) have been identified as positive allosteric modulators (PAMs), but their receptor interactions and pharmacological profiles remain to be fully elucidated. In this study, we investigated interactions of these compounds at human α7 nAChRs, expressed in Xenopus laevis oocytes, along with genistein, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor. Genistein was found to function as a PAM. Two types of PAM profiles were observed. 5-HI and genistein predominantly affected the apparent peak current (type I) whereas PNU-120596 and TQS increased the apparent peak current and evoked a distinct weakly decaying ...

This guidance is intended to help sponsors determine the amount and types of safety data to collect during late-stage premarket and postapproval clinical investigations, (e.g., phase 3 clinical trials, studies of new uses, long-term outcomes).
Depending on the agent to be used, the committee with oversight of the use of that agent will require a completed internal form, an informative abstract of the work to be done and a standard operating procedure for the use of the agent in animals. In the standard operating procedures consideration should be given to the amount of hazardous agent to be used, its toxic level for both animals and humans (LD50) and its metabolism, if involved, so that decisions can be made about its presence in excreta and bedding that require special handling. The speed of the approval process is directly related to the completeness of the abstract and the standard operating procedures.. The use of hazardous chemicals including carcinogens, teratogens and toxins, is reviewed by the Laboratory Safety Committee (internal form RO-14).. The use of biohazardous etiological agents, recombinant DNA, as well as human blood, tissues, body fluids, and primary cells or cell lines are reviewed by the Institutional Biosafety ...

Return to Breeding Rules. Breeders are reminded that there is a 6 LITTER MAXIMUM. Those breeders trying to register more than the maximum number of litters will be required to provide a genuine reason in writing to the Stud Book Committee. Litters will not be registered until after the Stud Book Committee have considered the reasons given.. Three litters maximum in three years is a principle that the ISDS requires from its breeders in order to demonstrate compliance with the obligations of the 2006 Animal Welfare Act. This act specifically limits registered breeders to one litter per year.. Many ISDS breeders however are not registered, so although the law does not strictly apply the ISDS still accepts the welfare principles. We will therefore allow three litters in two years, plus a years rest, in the rare case that a bitch is mated unwittingly and too soon on the third occasion; but we then insist on a years rest and there have been issues when this rest period of one year has been ...
The numbers are not that high of what you would expect from puppy mill operations like we all have seen in the news. It is on a much smaller scale. But the practices are the same. Breed w/o taking health and well-being into account for a profit. When they made the news the first time - now 10 years ago - the police paid them a couple of visits. Unfortunately they could only fine them. And since such a fine is lower than the price of a puppy.... No, the Danish Animal Welfare Act is not equipped for this. A couple filed an official consumer complaint after problems with their puppies, but again, this only forces them to refund the amount paid for the puppy, and doesnt stop them.. Delete ...

Animal welfare science is the scientific study of the welfare of animals as pets, in zoos, laboratories, on farms and in the wild. Although animal welfare has been of great concern for many thousands of years in religion and culture, the investigation of animal welfare using rigorous scientific methods is a relatively recent development. The worlds first Professor of Animal Welfare Science, Donald Broom, was appointed by Cambridge University (UK) in 1986. Early legislation which formed the impetus for assessing animal welfare and the subsequent development of animal welfare science include the Ireland Parliament (Thomas Wentworth) An Act against Plowing by the Tayle, and pulling the Wooll off living Sheep, 1635, and the Massachusetts Colony (Nathaniel Ward) Off the Bruite Creatures Liberty 92 and 93 in the Massachusetts Body of Liberties of 1641. Richard Martins act, the Cruel Treatment of Cattle Act 1822 is often considered to be the precursor of modern relevant legislation. One of ...
All Beagle dog studies were performed by CiToxLAB North America (Canada) and conducted in accordance with their institutional animal care and use committee and the principles outlined in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals from the National Institutes of Health. Dogs (n = 14 dogs; 7 males and 7 females; age: 8 to 9 months at the time of ABP-700 dosing) were purchased from Marshall BioResources (USA). Dogs were individually housed in stainless steel cages equipped for telemetry data acquisition and day/night vision cameras for continuous video monitoring. Room temperature was maintained at 21° ± 3°C with 12-h light-dark cycles. At least 26 days before ABP-700 dosing, dogs were anesthetized with propofol and isoflurane and surgically instrumented for telemetric monitoring of electroencephalography and electromyography, intraarterial blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature, and physical activity generally as previously described.21 Sterile transmitters (D70-EEE and M10; ...
This animal study was approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee of Case Western Reserve University and was conducted in accordance with the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (NIH publication No. 86-23, revised 1985). The adult male Charles River guinea pigs were anesthetized with intraperitoneal ketamine (54 mg/kg), acepromazine (1.8 mg/kg), and xylazine (10.9 mg/kg) and heparinized. Hearts were quickly excised and perfused by the Langendorff method with a modified Krebs-Henseleit buffer containing (in mmol/L) NaCl 113.8, KCl 4.7, MgSO4 1.1, KH2PO4 0.12, NaHCO3 23.6, CaCl2 2.5, mannitol 6.0, and glucose 11.0, as previously reported.5 18 The solution was saturated with 95% O2/5% CO2 (pH 7.4) at 37°C. A saline-filled latex balloon attached to a 3F micromanometer catheter (Millar Instruments) was inserted into the left ventricle through the mitral valve for pressure measurements.5 18 The balloon was inflated to achieve 10 mm Hg initial minimum diastolic pressure ...
Last updated November 3, 2017. Statement of Human and Animal Rights. For research studies using human or animal subjects, the trials design, conduct and reporting of results must conform to Good Clinical Practice guidelines (such as the Good Clinical Practice in Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-Regulated Clinical Trials (USA) or the Medical Research Council Guidelines for Good Clinical Practice in Clinical Trials (UK)) and/or to the World Medical Association (WMA) Declaration of Helsinki. Generally, we suggest that the national standard of the lead investigator be followed. If authors have any doubt as to whether the research was conducted in accordance with the above standards, the rationale for the chosen experimental approach must be clearly presented, along with a statement and proof of explicit approval given by the appropriate Institutional Review Board (IRB, for human subjects) and/or the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC, for animal subjects) for conducting the ...

We propose a model in which the overproduction of GATA3 stretches the self-renewal capacity of DN2 cells and inhibits T lineage restriction, whereas E2A deficiency, independent of the overproduction of GATA3, allows DN2 cells to access alternative fates. Therefore, T-lymphocyte commitment requires passage through a checkpoint in DN2 cells in which positive and negative inputs to must be balanced to allow further differentiation. An important component of post-surgical care is observation of the animal and documentation of its recovery from anesthesia and major surgery. Major surgery penetrates and exposes a body cavity, involves orthopedic surgery, or produces significant impairment of physiological function. The intensity and type of monitoring necessary will vary with the species and the procedure and might be greater during the immediate anesthetic recovery period than later in postoperative recovery.. Documentation of post-surgical recovery is required for USDA covered species and recommended for all vertebrate species. USDA covered species includes dogs, cats, nonhuman primates, guinea pig, hamster, rabbit, farm animal, or any other warm-blooded animal (* Members of the Genus Mus and Rattus are currently exempt from USDA coverage).. During the anesthetic recovery period, the animal should be in a clean, dry area where it can be observed as appropriate, and as specified in the approved protocol. Particular attention ...
Characterization of the mice studied. Donor cells and platelets were derived from C57BL/6 WT mice (The Jackson Laboratory) or mUK-transgenic mice, which ectopically express murine urokinase within megakaryocytes (14). Recipient mice were homozygously transgenic for hαIIb and null for the expression of platelet mouse αIIb (mαIIb-/-) (8), designated hαIIb+ mice, and expressed 20% of the level of CD41 seen on human platelets (12). All animal studies were done with approval of the Institutional Animal Utilization Committee at the Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia. Isolation of platelets and megakaryocytes ex vivo. FL megakaryocytes were obtained from E14 FL cells homogenized and cultured as previously described (7). Adult BM cells were obtained from femurs and tibiae of C57BL/6 mice (21). Mature megakaryocytes were isolated using a 2-step density gradient (21). Washed platelets derived from the inferior vena cava of C57BL/6 mice in acid-citrate-dextrose were prepared as previously described ...
Since the end of the Australian Animal Welfare Strategy (AAWS) in 2014, there has not been an overarching mechanism for national coordination, collaboration, and engagement on animal welfare for all animals. TAWC operates in a similar spirit to the AAWS but is facilitated by academics across multiple Australian universities rather than by the Federal Government. TAWC facilitates information exchange and national conversations about animal welfare and provides a mechanism for various groups to drive on-the-ground practice change.. ...

In order to obtain peritoneal macrophages, Balb/C mouse strain males, age 8 to 12 weeks, were injected i.p. with 300 fig of zymosan (SIGMA) dissolved in a phosphate buffer (PBS) in a total volume of 0.1 ml/mouse. After 24 hours the mice were euthanized according to the Laboratory Animal Welfare Act. The peritoneal cavity was washed with a sterile physiological solution (5 ml). The obtained peritoneal macrophages were washed twice with a sterile physiological solution and, after the last centrifugation (350 g/10 min), resuspended in RPMI 1640, into which 10% of FBS were added. In order to determine TNF-a secretion, SxlO4 cells/well were cultivated in a total volume of 200 \x\ for 18 to 24 hours on midrotitre plates with a flat bottom (96 wells. Falcon) in RPMI 1640 medium, into which 10% FBS (Fetal Bovine Serum, Biowhittaker) inactivated by heat, 100 units/ml of penicillin, 100 mg/ml of streptomycin, 20 mM HEPES and 50 μM 2-mercaptoethanol (all of GIBCO) were added. By Lisa Franzetta. For many people faced with a legal situation involving a companion animal, it comes as a shock to discover that the laws protecting their families, neighbors, and friends from violence and abuse fail to protect their four-legged loved ones. Despite the important role they play in so many of our lives, animals in this country are still considered property by law-in most cases no different than a table or a chair. Existing laws are often inadequate, full of loopholes, or lack enforcement. There are still states where no matter how badly someone abuses or tortures an animal, he cannot be charged with a felony. The federal Animal Welfare Act explicitly excludes birds, rats, and mice, and there are no federal laws protecting the billions of animals being raised for food from the most egregious abuses on factory farms.. For 30 years, the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) has been fighting to protect the lives and advance the interests of animals through the legal system. This ...
Every year, tens of millions of animals are used in cruel and deadly taxpayer-funded experiments inside university laboratories across the country. Now, Every year, tens of millions of animals are used in cruel and deadly taxpayer-funded experiments inside university laboratories across the country. Now, PETA-recognizing that all experimentation on animals is cruel and unethical-has created Failed Tests, an interactive feature that ranks colleges as bad, worse, or worst for animals. The grades are based on the number of animals covered by the federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA)-including pigs, dogs, cats, rabbits, and monkeys-who are held and used in experiments at the school, the amount of government funding received from the National Institutes of Health, and the number and severity of a schools AWA violations.
The cat is the most popular companion animal, and people are increasingly interested in its wellbeing. One of the topics under international debate is the weaning age, i.e., the age at which kittens are separated from their mother and siblings and brought to a new home. In Finland, the recommended minimum age of weaning is 12 weeks, but in many other countries, such as the United States, weaning of kittens as young as 8 weeks is common.. It has previously been thought that the critical period of socialisation in cats ends by 8 weeks of age, after which social experiences have little impact on behaviour.. We found that positive changes in the cats behaviour can occur after the currently recommended age of weaning, 12 weeks. Im a cat lover myself, and this study supports my own previous experiences on the importance of the weaning age on the wellbeing of cats. I think raising the recommended age of weaning would be the animal welfare act of the year, says doctoral student Milla Ahola.. While ...
