Bis(trifluoromethyl)thiophosphinic acid, (CF3)2P(S)OH, has been prepared by the reaction of concentrated sulfuric acid with salts of the acid. The new moderately strong monothio acid is stable in aqueous solution but yields 1 mol of CF3H per mole of acid upon alkaline hydrolysis. The acid has been characterized by chemical and spectroscopic methods including gas-phase infrared spectra which suggest that the acid has the (CF3)2P(S)OH structure. Dehydration of the acid with P4O10 proceeds smoothly to give good yields of the anhydride, ((CF3)2P(S))2O, which is extremely inert toward electrophilic reagents such as hydrogen halides and hydrogen sulfide. I got a whiff of a very small amount of it, causing me to choke for a few moments. The condensed liquid (which I got 22mL of, if I remember correctly) was still liquid, showing no signs of imminent freezing, at -10C. Water insoluble polycaprolactone-epoxide adducts are produced comprising the reaction product of a polycaprolactone polyol, a diepoxide and an anhydride of a polycarboxylic acid. The polycaprolactone polyol reacted with the diepoxide and the anhydride of the polycarboxylic acid has at least two hydroxyl groups in the molecule, a hydroxyl number of from about 15 to about 600 and an average molecular weight of from about 290 to about 6,000. The carboxylic acid anhydride has at least one intramolecular carboxylic anhydride group. These water insoluble polycaprolactone-epoxide adducts on reaction with an inorganic or organic base produce water soluble, carboxyl modifier polycarprolactone-epoxide oligomer addition reaction products which are eminently suitable for the production of aqueous coatings compositions. We are using these tools to investigate poly P metabolism and functions in fungi, plants and algae. The present invention relates to processes for controlling the formation and deposition of scale and sludge and in particular calcium phosphate which would otherwise occur in aqueous mediums containing sludge and the ions capable of forming scale. The invention, more particularly, relates to the control, reduction and/or prevention of scale and sludge deposits in cooling water, scrubber and steam generating systems, evaporators, economizers, and the like by the introduction of a copolymer comprising sulfonated styrene and maleic anhydride moieties to the water used therein. The copolymers discovered to be particularly effective for the purpose are those having a mole ratio of sulfonated styrene moieties to moieties derived from maleic anhydride of from about 2:1 to about 4:1 and preferably 2:1 to 3:1 with certain type deposits.
A photoimageable composition, useful as a photoresist for forming a printed circuit board, is both alkaline aqueous developable but, subsequent to exposure and development, is processable in highly alkaline environments, such as additive plating baths and ammoniacal etchants. The photoimageable composition is tack-free and is resistance to polymerization inhibition by oxygen, and is therefore particularly suitable for contact printing. The photoimageable composition comprises A) between about 25 and about 75 wt % of a binder polymer, B) between about 20 and about 60 wt % of a photopolymerizeable material which is a multifunctional photopolymerizeable monomer or short chain oligomer, and C) between about 2 and about 20 wt % of a photoimageable chemical system, the weight percentages being based on the total weight of components A)-C). Theres not much that we can do with raw cotton in terms of processing it, other than to make thread or yarn. But, that tangled up mess of polymer chains can also be made into films. Just imagine taking a big handful of that cooked spaghetti and smooshing it around on a plate to give a flat, smooth layer or film. You cant do that with the raw stuff. So, how do we take away the hydrogen bonding? We have to block the OH group with something that wont hydrogen bond. A relatively cheap and easy way to do this is to replace them with acetate groups (or react them using chemistry). We use acetic acid to do this. Acetic acid is what gives vinegar its sour taste, but soaking the cotton balls in vinegar wont work (dont even bother -- youll just make cotton balls that smell like pickles!). Well have to go into the lab and use 100% acetic acid (also called "glacial acetic acid) and acetic anhydride. Im now fairly confident that Ive made TCMDC-123794 and TCMDC-123812. By fairly confident I mean that Ive got a reasonable looking but crude 1H NMR and low res. mass spec of both of the compounds. They are not clean by NMR after a column and the yield of the reaction was pretty bad (~20%). Still this isnt too bad for a first go, using a quick and dirty acid chloride. Most of the mass seems to go toward turning the acid into the anhydride. ...
