Dispersal, one of the most important processes in population ecology, is an issue linking physiological and behavioral features. However, the endocrine control of animal dispersal remains poorly understood. Here, we tested whether and how thyroid hormones may influence dispersal in glass eels of Anguilla anguilla, by testing their influence on locomotor activity and rheotactic behavior. Glass eels were caught during their estuarine migration and treated by immersion in either a l-thyroxine (T4) or a thiourea (TU) solution. As measured by radioimmunoassay, T4 and TU treatments induced, respectively, increased and decreased whole-body thyroid hormone levels relative to untreated controls. We tested a total of 960 glass eels distributed into control, and T4 and TU treatment groups, on their swimming behavior in experimental flume tanks equipped with upstream and downstream traps that allowed us to concurrently measure both the locomotor activity and the rheotactic behavior. Compared to controls, locomotor
Anguilla anguilla exhibits facultative catadromy, has multiple life stages, and is semelparous and panmictic; these life history traits made application of the IUCN Red List criteria more challenging. Anguillids are often referred to as freshwater eels, however, it is known that they can exhibit inter-habitat migration and that a proportion may stay in estuaries, lagoons and coastal waters, rarely, if ever, entering freshwater: this element of the population is particularly poorly understood.. Ideally, the IUCN Red List criteria would be applied to mature eels at their spawning grounds, and in the absence of such data, the criteria would be applied to silver eels starting their spawning migration (in the case of European Eels, leaving continental waters), as these represent the maximum estimate of spawning stock biomass, but data sets for this are very rare. The majority of available data relates to glass eels and yellow eels but the relationships between recruitment, yellow eel populations, ...
The American eel, Anguilla rostrata LeSueur 1817, is in the order Anguilliformes, family Anguillidae. Anguilla eels are termed freshwater eels, although some species (including the American eel) are able to complete their entire life cycle in salt water.

Anguilla was first settled by Amerindian tribes who migrated from South America. The earliest Amerindian artifacts found on Anguilla have been dated to around 1300 BC, and remains of settlements date from 600 AD.[3] The date of European discovery is uncertain: some sources claim that Columbus sighted the island in 1493, while others state that the island was first discovered by the French in 1564 or 1565.[4] The name Anguilla derives from the word for "eel" in any of various Romance languages (modern Spanish: anguila; French: anguille; Italian: anguilla), probably chosen because of the islands eel-like shape.. Anguilla was first colonised by English settlers from Saint Kitts, beginning in 1650.[5] The French temporarily overtook the island in 1666 but under the Treaty of Breda it was returned to English control.[5] Other early arrivals included Europeans from Antigua and Barbados. It is likely that some of these early Europeans brought enslaved Africans with them. Historians confirm that ...

European eels (Anguilla Anguilla), an endangered species with high economic value, exhibit very unusual features in their multistage catadromous life cycle at different life stages. The reproduction of eel takes place in the Sargasso Sea. Leptocephalus larvae use ocean currents (mainly the Gulf Stream) to migrate to European coastal areas, and then metamorphose into glass eels probably as they reach the continental shelf. Glass eel then, enter estuaries to join the fresh waters network. Knowledge about glass eel biology and migration has mainly increased in the eighties, and it is now well established that the activity during the estuary migration depends mainly on tidal cycle, even if lunar and circadian rhythms and/or direct influence of light and tidal ...

Biological data on glass eels (Anguilla anguilla) were collected during two successive sampling periods from November to March (1996-1997 and 1997-1998) on the Adour estuary. As for other estuaries, decrease in length (mean of 73.5 to 67.4 mm) and weight (mean of 3.5 to 2.6 dg) of glass eels were observed. Weight and length characteristics were used to identify groups of glass eels. These groups were well distinguished during the first sampling period but some overlaps appeared in the second one. Fluctuations of static allometry and similarity coefficients showed successive glass eels arrivals in the lower part of the estuary during the two seasons. We used fluctuations of the index of similarity in the second period to describe arrivals of glass-eels ...

Salinity is one of the most important factors that affect the fish growth and survival. Superoxide dismutases (SODs), as the primary antioxidant enzymes, play a first role in the process of preventing oxidative stress caused by excessive superoxide anion (O ${}_{2}^{-}$ 2 − ) in living organisms. In the present study, we investigated the effects of salinity on the gene expressions as well as enzymatic activities of MnSOD and Cu/ZnSOD in gill, intestine, kidney, liver and muscle tissues of the marbled eel Anguilla marmorata. We found that the liver might possess stronger redox capacity compared with other tissues. Furthermore, the gene expressions and enzymatic activities of SODs in juvenile marbled eels could be effectively enhanced by low salinity but inhibited when the salinity was higher than the body tolerance. Our findings indicated that MnSOD and Cu/ZnSOD played vital roles in the adaptation of marbled eels to salinity variation, which contributed to the elucidation of physiological adaptation
ABSTRACT: The presence of vaterite mosaic in the aragonite otoliths of anguillid eel otoliths is readily determined by reflected light microscopy after etching with EDTA. The prevalence and intensity of vaterite inclusions in sagittal otoliths of 165 American eels Anguilla rostrata were examined in relation to latitude and migratory history. Prevalence varied significantly (range: 21.3 to 58.8%) among 3 rivers in Atlantic Canada and increased non-linearly with latitude. Habitat differences among sites may confound the relation because most (48%) vateritic otoliths came from eels with a history of estuarine residence and inter-habitat migration. The limited number of sites, restricted geographic range and modest otolith sample sizes makes premature any conclusion that the prevalence of vateritic otoliths in American eels increases with latitude. The frequency of vaterite inclusions in otoliths (n = 63) was low (1 to 6) and did not vary among sites. Vaterite intensity was low (,5%, median = 0.21%, ...

TY - BOOK. T1 - On the way to successful European eel larval rearing: Impact of biophysical conditions and gamete quality. AU - Sørensen, Sune Riis. PY - 2014. Y1 - 2014. N2 - The European eel is a widely distributed fish species of economic and cultural importance. It inhabits both coastal and freshwater systems, and is targeted by fisheries and treasured as food item. Although eels are reared in aquaculture, this industry relies solely of wild‐caught juvenile glass eels that arrive to theEuropean coasts after a 6000 km journey from the Sargasso Sea, where they were hatched. The adolescent eels start their long migration from the European continent back to their spawning area in the Sargasso Sea in late autumn as sliver eels. As long as the eels are within the European continent, they are in an immature stage, and they do not start migration and maturation until the silvering stage. This stage is however tightly controlled by brain and pituitary hormones, preventing maturation of gonads ...

We found a characteristic frontal hydrography in the areas of eel larval distributions. When supplemented with SST information from remote sensing, our hydrographic profiles along the three transects clearly illustrated the characteristics of the multiple frontal structure in the STCZ. This is seen as an inclination of the thermocline in two sharp fronts with a broad mixing zone in between. Such a large-scale pattern of interconnected frontal bands is a recurrent phenomenon of the STCZ, and the position and strength of the thermal fronts correspond with earlier observations of interconnected, undulating frontal bands that cross the southern Sargasso Sea and extend towards the east/northeast (Voorhis 1969; Eriksen et al. 1991; Ullman et al. 2007). Furthermore, the latitudes of the observed frontal bands are within the range of earlier findings, e.g. other cruises for eel larvae from February to April also found the northern band (and the northern limit of larval eel distributions) between 27° N ...
The partners of this project contribute to the recent sequencing of the genomes and transcriptomes of the chosen models: Anguilla sp draft genomes and transcriptomes, oyster genome and transcriptomes, cuttlefish transcriptomes and coral transcriptomes. We have also been able recently to establish the neuropeptidome (the whole set of neuropeptides produced) in C. gigas using a combined approach involving genomic data mining and mass spectrometry analyses of nervous tissue extracts. A similar approach is underway for S. officinalis. This successful approach is applied to characterize the neuropeptidomes of the eel Anguilla and the coral E. ancora. This give a good picture of the variety of neuropeptides expressed in our studied species. In parallel, BLAST screening of the assembled genomic resources available is carried out to generate the GPCR repertoire for each species of interest.. ...
