Dear Americans, I know youre being bombarded by anecdotes about Canadian health care right now, and the plural of anecdote is not data. The plural of anecdote is apparently television commercials, which I hear youre seeing a lot of right now, some featuring a Canadian whose story might not be quite true.. Most of my anecdotes involve other people. Ive broken my arm, sustained some relatively minor burns, contracted pneumonia and dealt with the aches, pains and ailments that everyone gets, but Ive been fortunate enough to have avoided anything serious.. Not everyone I know has been so lucky.. A friend was diagnosed with leukemia last summer. Since then, she has endured grueling chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant and is now cancer-free. She is just 26 years old.. A family member recently had knee surgery and is now the proud owner of two titanium knee joints. Only months before, he suffered a heart attack and had quadruple bypass surgery. Hes not just alive, hes enjoying life and his ...
When Dad told this story I was immediately struck with how he quickly moved from his story to a heuristic without analysis or considering the options. But of course, this is just how we often make decisions, so I thought I could replicate this process in our workshops. My first opportunity was at a workshop in Tasmania where we were helping natural resource managers develop a knowledge strategy for their region. We had reached the point in the workshop where we had identified a set of issues that were either working well or needed some attention so I asked the groups to grab an issue and tell a story explaining what happened. People busily jumped into the activity but I noticed they were just writing dot points detailing their opinions about what had happened. No one wrote a story. It seems that they didnt know what to do to write a story. I had just assumed that everyone else thinks about stories like I do and has a sense what one looks like. Big mistake! My next opportunity was at another ...

A new breed of doctors is coming to the fore- in the authors words, the techno-doctor.. This highly skilled individual is often someone with an overriding obsession with technology, and usually a super-specialist with an interest in only a small area ...
We humans are storytellers. When we want something to be memorable and meaningful, we make it into a story that can be interpreted causally. Our brains are just made that way [1], [2]. That may be why adding dramatic anecdotes to a book or article can make it more popular and persuasive than sticking solely to claims that have gone through rigorous tests. This can lead us to believe more strongly in a hypothesis than the evidence merits.. In Apologia we describe how we try to mitigate errors in our work by tracing our sources of evidence. We aim to at least label our hypotheses as such, and to point out when evidence we used comes only from observed correlations.. Beyond anecdote, there are other ways that storytelling is used in science: the plausible mechanism, and the evolutionary story. Both types are used in two ways: to explain an observation, or to lend weight to an hypothesis. A characteristic of this science fiction is that it can be argued against by making a different, more ...

Richard Nisbett has described the Hawthorne effect as a glorified anecdote, saying that once you have got the anecdote, you can throw away the data.[15] Other researchers have attempted to explain the effects with various interpretations. Adair warns of gross factual inaccuracy in most secondary publications on Hawthorne effect and that many studies failed to find it.[16] He argues that it should be viewed as a variant of Ornes (1973) experimental demand effect. So for Adair, the issue is that an experimental effect depends on the participants interpretation of the situation; this is why manipulation checks are important in social sciences experiments. So he thinks it is not awareness per se, nor special attention per se, but participants interpretation that must be investigated in order to discover if/how the experimental conditions interact with the participants goals. This can affect whether participants believe something, if they act on it or do not see it as in their interest, ...

It can help to use a positive anecdote here for some patients. I talk about one particular, wonderful patient who could only manage 1 minute on a bike before his pain become too severe. He started with just under a minute and gradually built up… 6 months later he cycled London to Brighton! While we, as scientists, dont put much stock in anecdotes as evidence, patients can find them helpful to illustrate a point.. Some patients might want a more detailed explanation. Where Im based, for example, we sit between two universities and treat a lot of lecturers and students who may be interested in research. For them I talk about this amazing study which suggests some joints are able to adapt even in the middle of a multi-day ultra-marathon event! This helps to challenge the view that a joint is simple hinge that gets wear and tear and instead shows its an amazing, living tissue that constantly tries to adapt to the stresses placed upon it.. Goldilocks theory. A barrier to our idea that ...

11 Thou shalt say I Love You - The perils of French-style amour.. A Little History. Id been playing around with the idea for Talk to the Snail for a while, and had started giving talks about living in France that I divided up into commandments. They were rather long commandments, I seem to remember, along the lines of if you go to Paris, dont assume that just because the drivers refuse to stop at red lights and try to run you over, that they hate you personally.. Id then tell a few traffic-related anecdotes. I had several similar commandments, all of which inspired a bunch of anecdotes, and I found I could keep this up for ages. Once, I was even moaned at by the person whod organized the event. OK it was funny, she told me, but you went on so long I didnt have time to sell them any books at the end ...
Smart managers recognize the risk of fraud and take preventive actions to strengthen their systems and reduce their vulnerability/ risk. For example, a second-generation entrepreneur who graduated from renowned University and runs IT software company hired us to review his Order to Cash cycle. The company had three divisions, namely, Contract Software Development, ERP and a SaaS platform. Each division had its own head. The CEO/ Owner did not have confidence in correctness of revenue numbers and was not sure if they matched with the level of effort. On analyzing the process, we discovered that all the authority in ERP, that is closing contracts with customers, issuing licenses and collection were concentrated with the Division Head. The licenses were issued through software and numbers were encoded making it difficult for anyone to figure out how many licenses have been issued. One of the use cases we developed was of Division head being under pressure to meet with his monthly Sales target. The ...

Poor glucose control during pregnancy is a significant concern for Canadian women with diabetes. This problem is magnified in First Nations women, who have among the highest rates of gestational diabetes (GDM) in the world (up to 18% of First Nations women will develop GDM during pregnancy and 70% of these will go on to develop type 2 diabetes later). Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology has the potential to help women maintain tighter control during pregnancy, however, in the First Nations population, there are many unique barriers that may affect use of this technology. Such barriers include remoteness of the community, cultural apprehension, lack or difficulty of access to care, and language differences.. A total of 60 participants from three participating First Nations communities in Southern Ontario will participate in the study. Participants will self-select to either the CGM group (n=30) or the control group (n=30) after consenting to participate in the study. Participants in ...
This paper reports a series of four experiments conducted to gain insight into students social representations of the firm. The results suggested a possible revision of the central core theory. They showed that the central elements of the representation were treated differently by the subjects. More specifically, the notion of Profit and Hierarchy, both central, did not play the same role in the representation. The subjects were found to grant evaluative power to the notion of Profit but not to the notion of Hierarchy. This differentiation by evaluative potential was also found for two peripheral elements. These differences suggest that independently of their central or peripheral nature, the various elements of a representation can be placed along an evaluative continuum. By combining the evaluative dimension and the central or peripheral dimension of the elements, we obtain a two-dimensional model of representations which divides discourse and cognition into four fields. ...
This study extends previous research investigating the social representation of organ donation and transplantation (Moloney & Walker, 2000, 2002) by exploring the accommodation of contradiction (Wagner, Duveen, Verma, & Thelmel, 2000) within consensual reality (Rose et al., 1995), and the role of themata (Markova, 2000) in a representation. The study employed a mail-out questionnaire embedded with eight experimental conditions, which manipulated two tasks, scenario rating scale and word association. WMDS (INDSCAL) analyses demonstrated that the dialectical concepts of life and death are generative of a contradictory representational field that is maintained through the differential elicitation of the normative and functional dimensions (Guimelli, 1998) of the representation in accordance with social context.. ...
While both men and women participate in hook-ups, Bogle notes that males and females often choose casual sex for different reasons.[1] Researchers suggest men and women have distinct sexual scripts, or ways in which cultural influences can affect an individuals sexual behaviors.[1][7] Furthermore, society judges the sexual behaviors of men and women in a completely different manner.[1][7] For men, sex is characterized as central to male identity, and research suggests men tend to prefer nonrelational sex.[7] In contrast, women are viewed as sexual objects and are normally sexually passive compared to men.[7] Society typically admires or glorifies men who frequently engage in casual sex, but women are scrutinized or admonished for those same behaviors.[1] For this reason, a womans sexual script has more focus on finding some type of commitment or relationship.[1] Additionally, women pursue relationships to protect their reputation while in college, but men have more sexual freedom ...

Hear, hear. A paper in the prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association today calls on scientists to fight stories with stories.. That is, in the service of more powerfully conveying what research actually shows, they should no longer shy away from anecdote just because it lacks statistical power. They should use stories of real people that illustrate evidence-based points in order to convey information better to the public.. The paper begins with a federal panels recent controversial recommendations against routine prostate screening for healthy men. Celebrities from Rudy Giuliani to Joe Torre fought the recommendations using that most powerful of weapons, their own personal stories, in which they attributed their survival to screening.. Panel members, in contrast, tended to explain their decision with numbers, not stories. They did not offer heartbreaking tales from men left incontinent, impotent or otherwise harmed - though goodness knows, they would not be hard to find. And ...
So they did it. In 1846. Francis was 23. And the recollections of that journey, The Oregon Trail: Sketches of Prairie and Rocky-Mountain Life, remain with us as one of the best treatments of the early West that we will ever have. Parkmans prose has the feel of a chronicle-it is obviously nonfiction, a travelogue. But it is not a ponderous journal of trivia and redundancy through which we must wade for hours to find the few interesting episodes; nor is each sunset a springboard for a forced flight of sentimental fancy in poor imitation of Byrons Childe Harold or other Old World sketches. Rather, it is an engaging selection of vignettes, personalities, and anecdotes that admit us to the ranks of the ragamuffin cavalcade that was Parkmans expedition. Parkmans writing is like Parkman himself-the stereotypical American at his best, one might say: direct yet perceptive, practical yet romantic, hearty yet insightful.. (more…). ...
Paul Farmer, editor-in-chief of Health and Human Rights and founding director of Partners in Health, delivered the principal commencement address at the College of the Holy Cross on May 25. In his speech, centered on a personal anecdote he dubbed The Story of the Inhaler, Farmer looked to impress upon the graduating class the inequality that exists in the world and every persons obligation to combat it.. He recounted a particular experience in Haiti where he was serendipitously able to save a mans life from a near-fatal asthma attack, a chronic condition that is easily preventable and treatable in affluent countries. He emphasized this is a story about unequal access to the fruits of modern science. This is everybodys problem. This inequality was starkly apparent as he treated this man with his own personal inhaler, an item so easily accessible in the United States.. The twist in Farmers story is that he had at first refused, several times, to see the patient because of his own hurry to ...

A Project of the Center for Ethnography, University of California, Irvine While the design and conduct of ethnographic research in anthropology is still largely individualistic, especially in the way that research is presented in the academy, many projects depend on complex relationships of partnership and collaboration, at several sites, and not just those narrowly conceived as fieldwork. The binary here and there-ness of fieldwork is preserved in anthropology departments, despite the reality of fieldwork as movement in complex, unpredictable spatial and temporal frames. This is especially the case where ethnographers work at sites of knowledge production with others, who are patrons, partners,. In the absence of formal norms of method covering these de facto and intellectually substantive relations of partnership and collaboration in many contemporary projects of fieldwork, we would like to encourage, where feasible, events in the Center that would blur the boundaries between the field site ...

NEW YORK, 26 March (UN Womens Guild) -- The United Nations Womens Guild is sponsoring eight children who are victims of the 1986 Chernobyl accident to visit the United States for three weeks starting Friday, 27 March. The prognosis for these children is devastating. Without rehabilitation, there is little or no hope that they will reach their twenty-first birthday. The children, four girls and four boys, range in ages from nine to 12 years old. They will be accompanied by a paediatrician and a translator. Since 1994, the United Nations Womens Guild has worked in cooperation with, and given its financial support to, the Oncology Hospital in Minsk and the Children in Trouble Foundation of Belarus. Approximately 5,000 children are on waiting lists to participate in this programme. Planned activities for the children include a visit to the United Nations, a trip to the Broadway show The Beauty and the Beast, the Bronx Zoo, the Empire State Building and to Washington, D.C. The Womens Guild is a ...
Introduction Reproductive intentions and behaviour in many developing countries are strongly influenced by the sex of the offspring (1 6). Empirical evidence from the analysis of the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data from 57 countries by Arnold (7) shows that son preference remains particularly strong in South Asian countries. Apart from Bangladesh, Pakistan has the second highest ratio of preference for sons over daughters; and among the women who expressed a preference for the sex of their next child, sons were preferred to daughters by nearly ten to one. However, analysis of cross-sectional survey data such as the World Fertility Survey (WFS) and the more recent DHS is made difficult by the lack of information on reported gender preference and subsequent reproductive behaviour at the level of the individual. Only three longitudinal studies of reproductive intentions and subsequent fertility behaviour in South Asia have been carried out: one in India by Vlassoff (8) and two others in ...
Parity progression and choice of contraceptive method are increasingly associated with the sex composition of children. Many respondents wanted at least two sons, though most also wanted at least one daughter. Analyses suggest that the prevalence of modern contraceptive use among parous women would have been 19% higher in 2012-2013 in the absence of son preference. Permanent method use was extremely low among women with no sons and increased significantly with number of sons. The association between number of sons and use of temporary methods was weaker, while son preference had little relationship with traditional method use.. ...

A few quotes from the book: Its easy to see the appeal of irrational thinking; magical, pseudoscientific and faith-based explanations are effortless, nonfalsifiable, unambiguous, and instantly satisfying. In contrast, rationality, science, and skepticism are difficult, time-consuming, and generate only tentative conclusions of varying confidence levels. Rational people, however, base beliefs on the strength of the evidence, not on emotionality, tradition, faith or unreliable anecdotes.. If we can marshal the courage to rigorously instruct our children in critical thinking, perhaps the next generation will be more comfortable in admitting ignorance when an answer is unknown. Maybe, when forming a belief, they will instinctively ask, What does the evidence suggest? instead of What would I like to believe? Until then, can I interest anyone in therapeutic magnets, healing crystals, or freshly blessed holy water?. In science, disagreements are settled on the weight and persuasiveness of ...
Background: There is growing literature in the United States proposing that the distribution of some prognostic features for cancer may vary by ethnic/racial status. Among Canadian cancer registries, data on prognostic features, as well as treatment, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, are not routinely collected. To determine these characteristics, data from medical charts of the cancer patient is abstracted. Previous work in Ontario, Canada has demonstrated that survival after a breast cancer diagnosis is poorer among First Nations women compared to other Ontario women. The purpose of this study is to identify the distribution of prognostic features and treatment received among First Nations and non-First Nations women diagnosed with breast cancer from 1995 to 2004 in Ontario.. Study Design: This study employed a case-case design using the cohort of First Nations people in Ontario to identify 297 women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer between 1995 and 2004. Concurrently, a random sample of ...

The real success of the series is the stories. Each episode deals with a variety of themes, which are replete with humanity at its best and worst. There are moments of high drama and heart-wrenching poignancy, there is humour, grit and sensitivity. The scenes of childbirth are sensitively done, but are also realistic and in some cases quite confronting. However, the whole is tastefully done and quite enthralling. One familiar with the books may balk a little as the screenplay has elaborated the anecdotes of the books. Some of the diversions from the book are to allow the characters other than Jenny Lee to have stronger story lines, which works well for TV. Some of the story lines have been expanded and enhanced for dramatic effect, so they are not relying strictly upon the original authors memoirs, but rather the imagination of the scriptwriters. Once again this is understandable, given the medium of TV. ...
Yankovic set off to write the lengthy song, considering it as a final track for Running with Scissors. The long meandering story was not expected to be popular and instead Yankovic wanted to compose a song thats just going to annoy people for 12 minutes, making it feel like an odyssey for the listener after making it through to the end.[1] Yankovic described writing the song as free flowing, writing down a great deal of material he thought would be funny including previous anecdotes he had recorded, and trimming it down to form a lengthy semi-cohesive story.[1] The lyrics were too long to include in the liner notes for the album (it ends mid-sentence and goes into a written apology by Yankovic), though full lyrics were posted to Yankovics website.[2] The song starts by Al talking about his childhood with a paranoid mother who force-feeds him sauerkraut until he reaches age twenty-six and a half. One day while listening to the radio, he hears about a contest in which contestants ...
Around these sparse physical elements, the stage production builds up a magical world of memories and mirages, shifting screens that sift through the many truths and sides to all these stories within stories. Like the other iterations of Evans memoir - the original book, the audiobooks he narrated himself, which became cult listening in Hollywood, and then the 2002 film - this revisits the stations of the Evans cross.. It covers the early years when his Jewish father ministered to the dental needs of Harlem residents and wanted something more for his son; Evans early, frustrated acting ambitions; the moment Darryl Zanuck refused to fire him while shooting The Sun Also Rises in Mexico (an anecdote that created the title The Kid Stays in the Picture); and on through his rise to fame, fortune and the time he talked Henry Kissinger into attending the New York premiere of The Godfather when Marlon Brando refused to come.. In the earliest part, Evans is played by a lanky Heather Burns (from ...
Ugo Tesler chronicles the important events in Europe and North Americas in a very engaging and lucid style. He has included the progress through the 19th and the 20th centuries with glimpses from even an earlier era. The details in a story telling narrative accompanied by an impressive picture gallery instantly involve the reader in the drama of cardiac surgery. This is especially true for an old timer like myself. I lived through many of the events though much separated in geography and demography. The book delightfully takes us through personal traits of surgeons with anecdotes, some known and some not so well-known. They were all strong personalities with likes and dislikes, with varied interests. Their competitive spirit, however, was aware of the need to collaborate even across the Atlantic as depicted by Sir Russel Brock travelling to see Dr. Kirklin operate or inviting Denton Cooley to the Royal Brompton Hospital in London. The frailties or setbacks like the legal problems of C Walton ...
Much of my work focuses on trauma. In my work, I attempt to use innovative narrative and poetic techniques and forms to work around the felt experience of trauma. For example, my book Dear Dearly Beloved consists of a series of love letters in which the narrator tries, and fails, and tries again, to make sense of an incredible loss. In my novella Not Blessed, an unmentioned public trauma-war-disintegrates a shifting narrator, as he idealizes an idyllic childhood memory that cannot possibly be true. My hope is that my work will challenge the reader to rethink-both emotionally and intellectually-our relationships to what we believe we know.. Write something you cannot remember: a memory of something - a story, an anecdote, a song, another poem, a recipe, an episode of a television program, anything, that you only partially or imperfectly remember. Write multiple versions, at least 6, of this memory.. ...
The late Christopher van Wyk, famous for his poignant Apartheid poem In Detention, wrote childrens books, poems and novels. Van Wyk was born in Soweto but moved to Riverlea, a suburb on the outskirts of Johannesburg. Shirley, Goodness and Mercy, published in 2004, is an autobiographical account of his life growing up in a coloured community during the Apartheid era in the townships of Riverlea and Coronationville and all the relationships he built with family, friends, and neighbors.. The book is comprised of short anecdotes divided into chapters that detail his vivid memories in the townships. The title is inspired by Psalm 23 surely goodness and mercy shall follow me, which he replaced with Shirley, his mothers name.. In the stories, Van Wyk recalls how humor, laughter, and hope carried his community through tough social experiences and political hardships. This book is a real page-turner filled with hilarious South African jargon, and one in which you can immerse yourself in young Van ...

The film journeys northward from the heartland of rural Illinois to the mostly African-American and impoverished south side of Chicago; from Bridgeport, home to five generations of an Irish family named Daley, to Pilsen, hub of Chicagos Hispanic community; from the colorful chaos of the Maxwell Street Market to the high-rise ghettos of the Cabrini Green public housing project; and from the yuppie boutiques and blues clubs of Lincoln Park to Lakeview, where Halsted is the backbone of Chicagos gay community. A varied and colorful cast of characters guides viewers along the route: kids in a rural town, a Latino street-muralist in Pilsen, a junk scavenger in Cabrini Green, revelers at the gay pride parade. Their impressions and anecdotes bring into focus vital issues that simmer up from the asphalt of main streets all across the country: tolerance and racism, immigration, class disparity, ethnic and cultural identity ...
Though my reading matter currently focuses on my dissertation, occasionally I read something not at all related, just to keep myself sane and my mind from becoming too specialized (although its interesting how often this extracurricular reading works its way into my dissertation).. Though I am not much of a sports guy, I do exercise regularly (specifically, I do CrossFit) - so, when I saw this book, I thought it looked interesting enough to read. Steroid Nation: Juiced Home Run Totals, Anti-aging Miracles, and a Hercules in Every High School: The Secret History of Americas True Drug Addiction by Shaun Assael is an interesting, well written book that deals with the use and abuse of steroids and other drugs in America. Full of lots of interesting anecdotes, salacious scandals, and depressing stories, overall I enjoyed it.. Except for the part about Mormons. Because, according to this author, Mormonism is partly to blame for steroid abuse in America.. The weakest parts of the book are when he ...

One of the things that makes this book more engaging for the layperson than, say, Wexlers textbook for therapists, is Urwins genuine willingness to look at his own experiences. He is aware of his own bias and narrative perspectives, and he approaches them with a blend of grace and humour that allows the reader to see the experiences he describes through his eyes. His writing style is also very crisp with some hefty doses of British humour thrown in to help temper the desperateness of the situations and statistics hes backing up with both anecdotes and research. He admits out of the starting gate that his way of dealing with his fathers untimely death was to develop what Virginia Satir would call the irreverent stance; Urwin became the class clown, diverting intense sadness and grief off the boards with humour. Fourteen years later as an author, he has found his way back to an authentic vulnerability he balances against those moments of witty distraction, and the result is an engaging tone ...
These days, there is a lot of talk about expanding scopes of practice for the group of folks who used to be called physician extenders and then midlevel providers and more recently non-physician providers, many of whom are now getting degrees with the title doctor incorporated. While it seems to vary, these folks may include nurses, physician assistants (one day to be called physician associates perhaps), pharmacists, and more. Lots of forums are discussing whether folks who are not doctors should be calling themselves doctor or whether they should be expanding their scope of practice via legislative rather than educational means. But a recent personal anecdote has made me wonder about a slightly different question: should non-physicians be able to certify medical necessity? ...

Elizabeth, you may be right. But at this point I just dont know. I dont know how long it normally, or even ideally, takes, for example, to move 1000 people to the right place. I dont know what the likelihood is, even with the best of intentions and the most expert and capable administration, when moving large amounts of people, equipment, and supplies around a vast area as urgently as possible, that some of those elements will, at least for a time, be misplaced. I dont know how the response to this disaster as a whole, and taking its scale into consideration, compares with the response to other, previous disasters, and in particular I dont know how Browns performance here compares with the performance of other disaster officials in comparable situations. I certainly dont know how or whether replacing him at this juncture would help matters. In a disaster of this scope, its certainly true that anybody can find anecdotes of incompetence, both real and apparent. And in the end, you might, ...
Apples iPhone warranty does not cover accidental damage, which is why Brightons iPhone Curt has developed a cult following. He fixes phones fast and cheap, and his shop is home to one comic anecdote after another, for every broken phone has its own story and its own drama.
Continuing The Lockwood Echos series Then there was that time……. All true anecdotes. Mostly highlighting my utter stupidity & world-class ineptitude. This story is Part Two of a Comedy of Errors, that although funny to look back on now, could rival any soap opera for tragic content and feasibility of storyline. Part One; Then There Was That…
Lewandowskys current research interests are on the rejection of science. Like Krosnick and Reser, he understands profoundly the harm done to the community (and indeed the future of the planet) from climate science denial, mis-representation of peoples beliefs, and more. Science denial kills, begins Lewandowsky in a recent paper examining climate denial from two perspectives (Lewandowsky, 2013c). First, on the supply side, dis-information is deliberately disseminated by people and organisations, usually through the cherry-picking of data to provide facts which support a more convenient argument than the inconvenient truth, thereby casting doubt on the existence of climate change.. But the other side is also interesting. Why are people susceptible to misinformation? Experts in human cognition, like Lewandowsky, have several answers. They know that people are swayed by irrelevancies and anecdotes; for example, research has shown that people are more likely to believe in global warming if ...
1 teenage girl already suffering from a severe migraine. She took a molybdenum (given to her by a relative of mine), but she still ended up having to go to the hospital a few hours later. (I do not know her or her background, so I have no idea what is causing her headaches.) [Edit on 12/2/2017: My relative says she doesnt know whether the girl actually took the molybdenum. She gave it to the girls mother and suggested she give it to her for the migraine, but she has no idea if the girls mother ever gave it to her. So this is not a no effect anecdote after all ...
Back in her main house, Dar settles around a vintage Formica table in her living room, telling how her last year was particularly gnarly, including a COVID infection, which got her and her two children, and a van-totaling car-crash, from which Micah and Dar suffer back and shoulder pain. Rickie Lee Jones floats softly from a radio tuned to KXCI. The house calms too, walls arranged with fetching folk and found art, mandala and Native ritual imagery, many books and games, and, of course, tea spiced with powdered inositol (for her depression). Dar listens hard, her roundish pleasant face sharp with expectation, which can exhaust. She organizes her life into tidy mental files opened and closed in wily anecdotes and laughter, couched in this confident idea everything always works out. She references liminal space and goddesses as means to explain her own self-religion, fortified on Landmark Forums (a group seeking answers to life problems, is sometimes deemed disputatious), Buddha and Zen practices, ...

After reading Geriatric Pharmacology, I remain ambivalent about the answer to this question. This is a well-referenced, up-to-date text. It was refreshing to see only a few anecdotes and unsubstantiated generalizations about elderly patients. The book includes the requisite chapters on adverse drug reactions and compliance with prescribed drug regimens. Full chapters are devoted to the pharmacologic therapy of incontinence and impotence. Cardiovascular therapeutics and psychopharmacology are especially well-covered topics. However, despite extensive coverage of a wide range of subjects, the incomplete state of our knowledge about drug therapy in the elderly remains apparent ...
You know, after all these years as a scientist, physician, and skeptic, Ive been wondering. Perhaps its time to undergo a reassessment of my and philosophy. Ive always been a bit of a curmudgeon, and it hasnt really gotten me anywhere. My words appear to have no impact on the credulous.. For example, perhaps Ive been a bit harder than I should be on purveyors of dubious alternative medicine. Millions of people use it every day. Would they use it if there werent anything to it? I think not. After all, look at all those testimonials for chelation therapy, Reiki therapy, Chinese energy healing, acupuncture, echinacea, and touchless chiropractic. Indeed, Im beginning to wonder if it really isnt the alternative therapies that cause cancer cures when the patient has also received conventional therapy. After all, a testimonial or anecdote is almost as good as case reports and a small series of case reports can be enough to generate a hypothesis to test in a real clinical trial. Why wait for the ...
One of the curiosities of cannabis is that it can lead to a range of responses in users. When it comes to headaches, some find that it alleviates pain, while others claim it exacerbates it. Anecdotes abound identifying cannabis as the culprit for kickstarting throbbing head pain. On the other hand, individuals who regularly experience headaches and migraines swear by weed to reduce the severity or frequency of their episodes…. For Rosemary Mazanet, M.D., Ph.D., and Chief Scientific Officer of Columbia Care, there is a general consensus among experts that cannabis may relieve pain. There is evidence that migraine headaches may respond particularly well to cannabis, and the underlying endocannabinoid system may be involved in migraine headaches, explains Mazanet. And cannabis is known to help with nausea in general, which can accompany migraines.. Read more at Weedmaps. ...
Finally, anecdote, and subsequent publication of a case study, is often incomplete with the case study only reporting the period of improvement. For example, one might provide an essential oil blend to treat acne and following topical treatment for a week, the lesions begin to clear. The case study reports that this blend of oils was successful. However, there are often variables, reported by the client or not, that reduce the probability that the treatment has cured the acne. For example, the client may be using topical or oral prescription medication - it is possible that one or a combination of both may be of benefit. The client may have changed their diet which may also have an effect on the skin of people suffering acne lesions. They may have come to the practice at a particularly stressful time which has resulted in acute symptoms (for example, exams), but then the stress trigger is removed, and the symptoms resolve; at the next stress trigger, the lesions may return. Acne is cyclical in ...
