Our brains seem to be hard-wired for anecdotes, and we learn most easily through compelling stories; but I am aghast that so many people, including quite a number of my friends, cannot see the pitfalls in this approach. Science knows that anecdotes and personal experiences can be fatally misleading. It requires results that are testable and repeatable. Medicine, on the other hand, can only take science so far. There is too much human variability to be sure about anything very much when it comes to individual patients, so yes there is often a great deal of room for hunch. But let us be clear about the boundaries, for if we stray over them the essence of science is quickly betrayed: corners get cut and facts and opinions intermingle until we find it ...

Secondly, rather than leaving us with a collection of anecdotes, the Bill offers the prospect of making a huge step forward in medicine through the creation of a central database to record patient data. This database will be hosted at Oxford University, and work is progressing with the Department of Health to work out the details. A central database which will record each patients details, the treatment they receive and their outcomes is actually a hugely advance in medicine. With all of the patient data recorded we do not have a collection of anecdotes but a database that we can mine and explore and use to design clinical trials based on the signals we can glean from real patient data. It also means that non-standard treatments that work can be identified more quickly, and just as importantly those that do not work can also be identified and discouraged. This isnt a replacement for the clinical trial, its an advance on the system we now have ...
From Readers Digest:. Abingdon resident Susan Dunn is featured this month in Readers Digest, which selected her anecdote for All in a Days Work, a portion of its Humor Section that shares readers amusing work-related experiences. Readers Digest receives more than 30,000 Humor submissions a year.. Her anecdote: A gentleman arrived at our travel agency looking to book a trip to England. I arranged for his planetickets and maps and even a rental car.. They drive onthe opposite side of the road in England, right? he asked.. Yes, they do, I said.. Oh, he said, standing. I better go practice.. ...
hi. what is an anecdote. Nicole Eikhoudt • 5 months ago. An anecdote is a piece of writing of your own experience, pretty much that youve been through. For example a story about how you got hit in the head with a pole, I dont know but in a speech or essay its a great way to express your own experiences of what you ...
This is, of course, a reasonable manner in which to progress. It doesnt make sense to spend the millions of dollars a double-blind, placebo-controlled prospective randomized trial can cost if there isnt good preliminary evidence that the therapy is likely to be efficacious, and that preliminary evidence comes from smaller, less expensive trials. Ill expand upon what Steve wrote a bit. Often the very first evidence of potential efficacy of a new therapy comes from anecdotes. Yes, anecdotes. However, these anecdotes are not like the testimonials so beloved of so-called complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) practitioners. Oh, no. real anecdotes are carefully documented and contain objective measures, complete with laboratory tests not performed by quack-friendly laboratories where all too often it is found, for instance, that virtually everyone with a vague complaint is suffering from heavy metal toxicity. By their very nature, however, anecdotes are not definitive evidence of ...

Heres a couple anecdotes Ive heard about unemployment insurance:. 1. A couple years ago a commenter mentioned the following story from someone who ran a hotel in California. A dozen or so maids were laid off during the recession. After a few months the owner tried to hire them back. They declined, saying that with their husbands income and their unemployment insurance checks they found they didnt need the second income. But note; if they were collecting UI then they would be required to call themselves unemployed.. 2. A few days ago an acquaintance mentioned that he heard the following story from a Chicago taxi driver. He said it was hard to keep drivers, because theyd work for a few months and then go collect UI.. How are we to react to stories like these? Are they apocryphal? After all, you cant collect UI if you quit your job. Except you can, Ive known people who did so. Are they not politically correct? Do they represent blaming the victim? (Something Ive been doing a lot ...
About the Author Ravindra Varma is a learned scholar, who has been running the Institute of Gandhian Studies at Gopuri, Wardha for several years. He has been introducing the youth, especially the college students and post-graduates, to the life and message of Gandhiji. His knowledge and study of Gandhian ideology is deep, and to the best of my knowledge he has been trying his level best to live according to the Gandhian ideology. This gives depth to whatever he says or writes. He has written three books on Gandhiji or I might say that he has written one book which is divided into three parts. Book one gives a narrative of Gandhijis life-story. Book 2 narrates several anecdotes that illustrate the way Bapu dealt with problems, which are very interesting. Book 3 concentrates on the implications and application of Gandhian technique and the ideology of Satyagraha, non-violence, non-cooperation and the importance of bringing about change of heart in the opponent through self-suffering. Gandhijis

Writer starts with dialogue to draw the reader into the scene.] I went to your school and gave them a piece of my mind.. What did they say and what are they going to do about Carter? I asked.. They said they are going to have a conversation with him and his parents, and that they are going to suspend him for a time.. [Writer tells the story.] The next day at school I didnt see him, he wasnt at dance practice either which made me happy to see. Not seeing him all day gave me relief and I could tell that I was much happier. But what I didnt know is that the school had decided to only have Carter suspended for a day. This meant that the following day at school he was the first person that I had ran into and of course he had something to say. This time he had some harsher things to say because he knew that I was the one that reported him.. [Writer continues with dialogue to draw the reader into the scene with an anecdote.]Hey fat ass, you reported me but obviously it didnt do anything, he ...

WHat does the folloiwng sentnece mean? 1. One reason for the students have over the definition of short stories is that the other word forms, anecdotes, sketeches, or slices of life often find their ways into them. 2. The less words we use, the harder it is to have comething clearly happen to a character, and have that occurrence change him or her. ( those senteces above are all connected as a

All I need any interested members to forward to me is a name, age, city and state, a brief story overview including an anecdotal example of the problem (one symptom should be highlighted for the anecdote and the more touching, embarrassing or funny, the anecdote is, the better!) and an electronic photo, so we can put a face with the story (a photo will eventually be included for the article ...
I do. That will be the subject of a long article that Ive been working on for a few days. I hope to have it out in a week or two. As you know, there are no clinical studies on the effectiveness of auditing for relief of any therapeutic symptoms. There was a study done in the late 1950s or early 1960s that showed that auditing delivered exactly zero of the benefits Hubbard claimed for clear (increased IQ, etc.), but thats not really the same thing so I am not going to take a 50-year old study as sufficient to prove that auditing is ineffective. This question is the whole reason for the lengthy discussion about anecdote versus evidence. There are many people who have been in Scientology who have reported significant wins after auditing, and plenty of reason to believe those wins are genuine positive, significant and permanent life changes that have occurred as a result of auditing. However, positive anecdotes, no matter how many, are not proof that auditing works. You have to consider those ...
Another fascinating site, as it seems less glib than Urban Dictionary. Im not sure where these anecdotes fit, but they seem to confirm something.. Some 20+ years ago, I worked two stretches of 60 hour weeks at a job I disliked. Afterwards, during my time off, I went back into work anyway because I couldnt settle myself down to do anything at home. Four-and-three-quarter years ago, I finished writing a play that I (still) love, then got summarily sick, literally all over, with a sinus infection, shingles, and another affliction I wont mention except to say that it took six dozen suppositories to calm it the fuck down.. I wouldnt cite their cause as leisure per se, as both episodes came after a big push, so to speak, at work. Ive read similar anecdotes about big time movie directors, who collapse into bed once theyve completed the editing. I think it has to do with being so busy that you go without proper sleep and food. Its like you can be strong as long as you have to be strong, but the ...
So recently I read a -very- interesting book entitled We Get Fat: And What to Do About It by Gary Taubes. His theory about weight gain is that caloric surplus is not the correct reason for gaining weight; the problem is that the modern diet includes a surplus of refined carbohydrates, hence the obesity epidemic in America. According to Taubes, losing weight is as simple as a few nutritional modifications in the form of limiting the intake of sugar, cereals, and fruit. Now, dont get me wrong,

At the time of the hit, the Patriots and Raiders were less than two years removed from one of the most controversial and agonizing post-season losses in Boston-area sports history ... when an all-but-certain victory turned into a defeat when referee Ben Drieth called Ray Hamilton for roughing the passer. Between that, and the overall almost tribal rivalries that sprung when the old AFL merged with the NFL (face it, dont you get just a little more jacked up when those old AFL foes meet?), there resulted an abundance of bad blood between the Patriots and Raiders organizations (this wasnt helped either by a sideline shoving match between Pat Sullivan and Matt Millen in 1986 or the phantom tuck rule call in 2002 ...
Every day, survivors of murder victims have to drag themselves to court and listen to prosecutors, defense attorneys, witnesses and even defendants re-live their worst nightmares. It might not be pleasant, but its a necessary part of what makes the U.S. system of justice what it is. Is it perfect? No. Do guilty people often go free? Absolutely. And in the eyes of a loved one who has just seen a killer acquitted, is it fair? Not at all. Just as its not fair to railroad innocent people into long jail sentences and, possibly, death. They both happen, and, Im afraid, a lot more often than wed all like to think ...
Youll Row the Day! During the epic saga that was the creation of Trek Wars, we made a few mistakes. Before you judge us, remember! This was our first giant production. The scale was beyond anything wed done, since that whole building the pyramids project (I always laugh when they say aliens built them. Jeez... people are getting dumber every day.). So, in the midst of this monumental film, we may have taken a wrong turn... we may have lost things that shouldnt have been lost... we may have dropped jokes that could have changed the face of history. Or at least painted a mustache on it. There is a scene in the dream sequence in which a galley slave rows the ship to the berating rasps of Engineer Scottish. Harder! ROW HARDER! he growled. Sure, this passage did get some of the biggest laughs that modern film comedy has ever received, but it could have been better. Heres the moment of truth: no lies here: the original concept involved the same galley slave blowing into a pipe with all his ...
I dont generally criticize the people Ive worked with during my many years in the biz. Its not my style. I find its better to gently mock them from afar, kind of like voodoo of disrespect. Except the voodoo doll is my phone and the pins are prank calls. Suckers.. This is the only time Ill break the silence... but when I break the silence, I dont weakly snap it. I am like so many kung fu masters let loose in a lumber yard; I obliterate the silence. I want to tell you all about a young actor by the name of Ted Stoltzfus. Now, I know what youre thinking. You squeal, But hes brilliant! Hes like the Tom Hanks of crap! Yeah, well, Ive got news for you, and the picture on the front page is your face, getting pummeled by my righteous, raging fists of fury.. Were talking about an actor thats been riding on one accomplishment for an entire career. Without Got Mac in the early 90s, you wouldnt have heard of any Stoltzfus other than the one in that buggy you sped past on your way to the cow ...
Beginning in the late 1980s, Eric Davidsons group at Cal Tech developed a modularity hypothesis of developmental gene regulation, showing that in an expanding number of cases, particular aspects of development were governed by compact modules of transcription factor binding sites (TFBSs), and that these modules were separable, complex and interconnected. Davidson made no attempt to further generalize the hypothesis, but others took up the idea, transported it out of development and extended it to a general rule of clustering. Despite such misbegotten origins, the extended modularity hypothesis-that TFBSs in general tend to come in compact clusters-has been highly productive, yet it has never been challenged with a large, diverse and unbiased dataset to see how universal it actually is. The aim of the present paper is to do so. Applying human-mouse-rat phylogenetic footprinting to neighbourhoods of a diverse set of TFBSs, including both developmental and non-developmental signals, we find ...
Although more casually than perfectly crafted, the comics in Estrus #5 prove compulsively readable. Theyre funny and sometimes affecting, making it easy to see oneself in the details, such as the way the young Mari bails on a boy because of a peers harsh appraisal or noticing the place where she and a boy had sex outside was easily seen from a nearby road. At the same time, theres always that sneaking suspicion when it comes to such personal work that the portrayals may not be fair, or that were simply peeping at the instances described, or that the experiences are forced to conform to Naomis treatments of them as a sprightly anecdotes when they could or maybe even should mean something entirely. By that I dont mean to suggest anything having to do with a factor some people are likely to hit on right away, that most of the book is given over to anecdotes stemming from a minor. I actually like the matter-of-factness that Naomi brings to that element of her story. Its more a sense that I ...
Esther and two other women at Stanford noted that there were no women professors at Stanford. All three got together to request that a woman be appointed as a professor. Esther researched the question, then all three women presented their complaint to a dean. The dean responded that none of the women were qualified, as a professor must have published enough papers and none of the women in question met this requirement. Esther pointed out that most of the male professors didnt satisfy the requirement either. The dean responded that there was not sufficient funds to appoint a woman professor. Esther pointed out that funds had been specifically allocated for that purpose. The dean countered that the monies in question had been allocated to promote minorities that at that time were politically active and creating an embarrassment for Stanford University. Esther pointed out that this was an unauthorized spending of funds that were specifically designated for women: also a minority. The dean ...
I was walked about 8 steps to the other laser chair. Same wedge under my legs, but this chair/table had a recessed place to cradle your head. More drops were put in my eyes, Im guessing numbing, they were totally numb the whole time but drops of one sort or another were put in 5-6 times. There was a panel right above me with lots of white/blue lights (tiny ones) on the periphery, a blinking green light in the middle, and kind of a net of tiny red lights that moved around. One eye was taped shut again, the other was taped open with really soft tape, while they inserted something to hold my eye open. This was the part I was most freaked out about, but I could barely see it go in. I was asked to focus on the green light, and the doctor went in and raised the flap out of the way - my vision went instantly blurry and swimmy and I could barely see anything - just light and shape. I was told that the laser would begin firing, and it would make noises, so dont worry, and it would make smells, too, ...

Chapter 4. ABOUT THIS AND ABOUT THAT. Anecdotes about sex, family, work, old age etc. In this chapter non-political jokes are gathered dealing with various matters, such as family relations, infirmities of old age, relationship between colleagues, etc, as well as those with a sexual connotation (the sex related items in this chapter are of a more restrained variety while the real off-color jokes are found in Chapter 8).. Readers of this chapter will not fail to notice that many of the sex-related jokes reveal a denigrating attitude toward women. It seems safe to assume that most of such anecdotes were created by men, and reflect certain trends in the Russian man-dominated culture. Throughout the Russian history women always had to bear the heaviest burden. However risky any generalization may be, it seems that one feature of Russian culture was that, on the one hand, a Russian woman was routinely expected to stay virgin until marriage, to be modest, chaste, and knowing her place, and on the ...
Abstract. This paper revisits several classic anecdotes defending popular protest as an appropriate part of the political process. Some key points:. 1. The two most cited anecdotes, in the Dzwo Jwan and Gwo Yw, are dated, in those texts, to c0850 and 0542, respectively. Accepting that dating, they are too intermittent to document a tradition for the right of political expression in the ancient period. The thinness of the evidence casts doubt on the claim itself.. 2. But our researches show that both the DJ and GY texts articulate values from their own time, disguised as stories about earlier times. This was the standard way to introduce a novel idea into the Warring States political debates. The stories are then really talking about the compilation dates of those two texts, which are c0312 and c0306, respectively. Both probably reflect a late 04c political theory agitation.. 3. In support of this conclusion, we find that the corresponding strata of the Analects (LY 12-13) express very similar ...
Joe Cortina March 23, 2012 @ 2:53 pm JOHN, I get your point but I believe you are mistaken about this comment as a generality for two reasons:. How about when Germany swarmed over Poland, Belgium, and other neutral countries and annihilated thousands of innocent people? . #1 I spent time in both those countries and never heard any such claims of such war crimes;. #2 I was married to a Ukrainian woman (Tanya) who was very well educated for her youth. The following anecdote regarding the honor and conduct of the German military towards civilians was told to me by her personally.. I thought these were interesting anecdotes. You must remember, Tanyas grandmother was Ukrainian and before Stalins purges - loyal to the Mother Country. She was NOT a Marxist however - and was, like most Ukrainians, a Christian. They were of course in the heart of the breadbasket of the Ukraine and were self sustaining farmers who owned a small bit of their own land - Kulaks. This combination of circumstances are ...
At the Ancestral Health Symposium, I met two Whole Health Source readers, Aravind Balasubramanian and Kamal Patel, who were interested in trying a simple diet to lose fat and improve their health. In addition, they wanted to break free of certain other high-reward activities in their lives that they felt were not constructive. They recently embarked on an 8-week low-reward diet and lifestyle to test the effectiveness of the concepts. Both of them had previously achieved a stable (in Aravinds case, reduced) weight on a paleo-ish diet prior to this experiment, but they still carried more fat than they wanted to. They offered to write about their experience for WHS, and I thought other readers might find it informative. Their story is below, followed by a few of my comments ...
Again, I think to anyone who actually has tried to buy a house, sold a house, do anything with a detached home in the last five years they will know who is blowing smoke. But I leave it to the readers to judge. But have you actually said anything new? Your entire thesis is that based on macro stats this market must implode. You have provided nothing more than I have. We are in reality, swatting each other. Difference is I actually am closely in touch with the market, you on the other hand, are not. But thats ok, I could play this game all day long. You still havent provided me an ounce of proof that you are qualified to analyze the market because you dont know who is buying, who is selling, what segment is outperforming, which one is under performing. You just like to paint everything with a broad brush. To you, a detached home in west point grey is the same as an apartment in richmond. How are you any different than the arm chair investors pretending like they know the inside on message ...
In a story that appeared in The South Bend Tribune on Oct. 12, Mantis father, Brian, recounted an anecdote about how his son and Kekua met after Notre Dame had played at Stanford in 2009. Brian Teo also told the newspaper that Kekua had visited Hawaii and met with his son. Brian Teo told the AP in an interview in October that he and his wife had never met Mantis girlfriend but they had hoped to at the Wake Forest game in November. The father said he believed the relationship was just beginning to get serious when she died. ...
Raymond Wolfinger, a political scientist and professor, once said, The plural form of anecdote is data. This quote explicably encapsulates what Brooke and I envision for the Lone Star Parity Project. Many times data and facts are presented solely as aggregated numbers, meant to generalize and identify overarching trends. While this remains important, the crux of the solution resides in the anecdotes of the people it affects. Every woman is a piece to the puzzle of politics in Texas, every experience as important as the other in contributing to overall parity. ...
Building a Beast. From the L.A. Daily News November 30, 1991, animator Glen Keane was the primary animator on the Beast in Disneys Beauty and the Beast (1991). Traditionally, the Beast had been depicted as a variation of a lion or a bear but Keane felt that anything could go. His earliest experiments with horns and ears were unsuccessful and made the character look like an alien.. During the pre-production work in England, Keane had to walk through the London Zoo every day on his way to the studio. He began sketching the animals there for inspiration.. After seeing the way the wolves in the zoo walked and moved, I immediately wanted Beat to be comfortable on all fours which was a big statement, said Keane. This guy is not just a man with a beasts head on. He is actually, physically, bone structure wise, an animal. I wanted him to be so believable and realistic that I could explain his physical anatomy to each of the animators.. Keanes initial deigns were based on Boris, a large mandrill ...

The debate was hosted by both an atheist and a Christian student group at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Today well be talking about it--and about debates generally. Here

Dear Americans, I know youre being bombarded by anecdotes about Canadian health care right now, and the plural of anecdote is not data. The plural of anecdote is apparently television commercials, which I hear youre seeing a lot of right now, some featuring a Canadian whose story might not be quite true.. Most of my anecdotes involve other people. Ive broken my arm, sustained some relatively minor burns, contracted pneumonia and dealt with the aches, pains and ailments that everyone gets, but Ive been fortunate enough to have avoided anything serious.. Not everyone I know has been so lucky.. A friend was diagnosed with leukemia last summer. Since then, she has endured grueling chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant and is now cancer-free. She is just 26 years old.. A family member recently had knee surgery and is now the proud owner of two titanium knee joints. Only months before, he suffered a heart attack and had quadruple bypass surgery. Hes not just alive, hes enjoying life and his ...
Transformation is the evolution of an indolent lymphoma/leukemia to an aggressive lymphoma, typically harboring a very poor prognosis. This phenomenon is well described in humans , but under-estimated in dogs although recognized as a possible evolution of indolent lymphomas/leukemias. In canine chronic leukemias blast crisis (mainly in myeloid ) and Richter syndrome (transformation into a high grade lymphoma) (mainly in B-cell lymphocytic leukemia) has been reported. Transformation is a possible event also in canine low grade lymphomas, although rare. The increased knowledge has also generated new questions and posed challenges that need to be addressed to improve outcome, including the recognition of the clinical characteristics at diagnosis associated with a higher risk of transformation in an attempt of anticipating the typical evolution.
It can help to use a positive anecdote here for some patients. I talk about one particular, wonderful patient who could only manage 1 minute on a bike before his pain become too severe. He started with just under a minute and gradually built up… 6 months later he cycled London to Brighton! While we, as scientists, dont put much stock in anecdotes as evidence, patients can find them helpful to illustrate a point.. Some patients might want a more detailed explanation. Where Im based, for example, we sit between two universities and treat a lot of lecturers and students who may be interested in research. For them I talk about this amazing study which suggests some joints are able to adapt even in the middle of a multi-day ultra-marathon event! This helps to challenge the view that a joint is simple hinge that gets wear and tear and instead shows its an amazing, living tissue that constantly tries to adapt to the stresses placed upon it.. Goldilocks theory. A barrier to our idea that ...

We humans are storytellers. When we want something to be memorable and meaningful, we make it into a story that can be interpreted causally. Our brains are just made that way [1], [2]. That may be why adding dramatic anecdotes to a book or article can make it more popular and persuasive than sticking solely to claims that have gone through rigorous tests. This can lead us to believe more strongly in a hypothesis than the evidence merits.. In Apologia we describe how we try to mitigate errors in our work by tracing our sources of evidence. We aim to at least label our hypotheses as such, and to point out when evidence we used comes only from observed correlations.. Beyond anecdote, there are other ways that storytelling is used in science: the plausible mechanism, and the evolutionary story. Both types are used in two ways: to explain an observation, or to lend weight to an hypothesis. A characteristic of this science fiction is that it can be argued against by making a different, more ...
Welcome to potbellies! I love to eat and cook. I am thirteen now, which may not seem old but I have been cooking for as long as I can remember. When I was diagnosed with Leukemia recently, I had to stay home and eat healthily. I started this blog as a distraction and hobby, to collect…

When Dad told this story I was immediately struck with how he quickly moved from his story to a heuristic without analysis or considering the options. But of course, this is just how we often make decisions, so I thought I could replicate this process in our workshops. My first opportunity was at a workshop in Tasmania where we were helping natural resource managers develop a knowledge strategy for their region. We had reached the point in the workshop where we had identified a set of issues that were either working well or needed some attention so I asked the groups to grab an issue and tell a story explaining what happened. People busily jumped into the activity but I noticed they were just writing dot points detailing their opinions about what had happened. No one wrote a story. It seems that they didnt know what to do to write a story. I had just assumed that everyone else thinks about stories like I do and has a sense what one looks like. Big mistake! My next opportunity was at another ...
11 Thou shalt say I Love You - The perils of French-style amour.. A Little History. Id been playing around with the idea for Talk to the Snail for a while, and had started giving talks about living in France that I divided up into commandments. They were rather long commandments, I seem to remember, along the lines of if you go to Paris, dont assume that just because the drivers refuse to stop at red lights and try to run you over, that they hate you personally.. Id then tell a few traffic-related anecdotes. I had several similar commandments, all of which inspired a bunch of anecdotes, and I found I could keep this up for ages. Once, I was even moaned at by the person whod organized the event. OK it was funny, she told me, but you went on so long I didnt have time to sell them any books at the end ...

Richard Nisbett has described the Hawthorne effect as a glorified anecdote, saying that once you have got the anecdote, you can throw away the data.[15] Other researchers have attempted to explain the effects with various interpretations. Adair warns of gross factual inaccuracy in most secondary publications on Hawthorne effect and that many studies failed to find it.[16] He argues that it should be viewed as a variant of Ornes (1973) experimental demand effect. So for Adair, the issue is that an experimental effect depends on the participants interpretation of the situation; this is why manipulation checks are important in social sciences experiments. So he thinks it is not awareness per se, nor special attention per se, but participants interpretation that must be investigated in order to discover if/how the experimental conditions interact with the participants goals. This can affect whether participants believe something, if they act on it or do not see it as in their interest, ...

A new breed of doctors is coming to the fore- in the authors words, the techno-doctor.. This highly skilled individual is often someone with an overriding obsession with technology, and usually a super-specialist with an interest in only a small area ...

A loud cacophony of crows wakes me up at seven in the morning. The crows are adamant. They want to do their morning assembly right outside my window, every day. A regular day commences at my tiny apartment in Four Bungalows, Mumbai. I rub my eyes and pick up the toothbrush from the shelf above…
Smart managers recognize the risk of fraud and take preventive actions to strengthen their systems and reduce their vulnerability/ risk. For example, a second-generation entrepreneur who graduated from renowned University and runs IT software company hired us to review his Order to Cash cycle. The company had three divisions, namely, Contract Software Development, ERP and a SaaS platform. Each division had its own head. The CEO/ Owner did not have confidence in correctness of revenue numbers and was not sure if they matched with the level of effort. On analyzing the process, we discovered that all the authority in ERP, that is closing contracts with customers, issuing licenses and collection were concentrated with the Division Head. The licenses were issued through software and numbers were encoded making it difficult for anyone to figure out how many licenses have been issued. One of the use cases we developed was of Division head being under pressure to meet with his monthly Sales target. The ...
Alternative medicine has become the politically correct term for questionable practices formerly labeled quack and fraudulent. During the past few years, most media reports have contained no critical evaluation and have featured the views of proponents and their satisfied clients. These happenings are part of a general societal trend toward rejection of science as a method of determining truths.. Under the rules of science, proponents who make the claims bear the burden of proof Instead of subjecting their work to scientific standards, alternative proponents would like to change the rules by which they are judged and regulated. Instead of conducting scientific studies, they use anecdotes and testimonials to promote their practices, and political maneuvering to keep regulatory agencies at bay.. To avoid confusion, alternative methods should be classified as genuine, experimental, or questionable. Blurring these distinctions enables promoters of quackery to argue that because some practices ...
I dont advise people with joint pain and morning stiffness to stop running. (Its futile to suggest this to a runner, anyway.) The idea you can wear out your joints is is a popular image, but its inaccurate. In most cases exercise can continue - exercise doesnt seem to accelerate the rate of osteoarthritis development. When the pain is persistent, Ill suggest a physician evaluation, and describe some non-drug and non-prescription approaches to symptom management that might be appropriate.. Im prepared now, for the inevitable question that follows: But what about supplements? What do you think of X? Glucosamine is a common inquiry (discussed at length here) as is chondroitin (which it is often co-packaged with). As with most supplements, their popularity is not related to good clinical evidence. Rather it seems to be secondary to perceptions of efficacy, driven by lots of anecdotes and general awareness. But the message that its ineffective may be getting out - Im getting fewer ...
This was our first stop on a safari trip to Botswana and to be honest we had not expected big things from this camp. How wrong we were, the accommodation, staff and food were all excellent and we were made to feel very much at home. As with many other reviewers we were lucky to have Bart as our guide for three days. He made the whole experience very enjoyable sharing his knowledge and experience in equal measure to his amusing anecdotes. The game viewing was actually better than we expected including the Meerkats, Brown Hyena elephant etc. The San Bushmen were a lively, funny and fascinating revelation, the few hours we spent with them will live with us a very long time. If you get the chance to meet these amazing people then do so, we can learn a lot from them about a positive attitude to life. The Salt Pans were incredible and we again will always remember the time we spent exploring and experiencing this unique area. Thank you Bart & Camp ...
Apropos of nothing heres a short story on online dating Ive been working on. As with so many anecdotes the idea behind this one traces its origins to a bar. I got talking to a chap who worked for an large gambling establishment. We had a shared interest in big data; I told him about some Twitter metadata projects, he told me about the information they had on their customers (quite a lot) and how they use it (you can probably imagine). Fast forward to a similar pub and once more Im discussing big data. This time its with a sales guy who tells me I wouldnt recognise the name of the company he works for. I dont push it. His company specialises in talking to companies that produce biometric data from pedometers, phones, workout trackers, sleep cycle apps, calorie counters and fitness games. They buy this data, aggregate it, remove personal information insofar as is required by privacy policies, and then sell the results to interested parties. Actuaries love the stuff. A few drinks later he ...

Towards the close of his nearly one hour speech, Pastor Warren asked his followers to be as committed to Jesus as the young Nazi men and women who spelled out in mass formation with their bodies the words Hitler, we are yours, in 1939 at the Munich Stadium, were committed to the Führer of the Third Reich, a major instigator of a World War that claimed 55 million lives. Rick Warren has exhorted Christians towards Nazi-like dedication in at least several public speeches and also during a one hour video recording of a talk by Warren, explaining his P.E.A.C.E. Plan, that is currently hosted on the official P.E.A.C.E. Plan website (see video page, The Global P.E.A.C.E. Plan). A version of the anecdote can also be found on page 357 of Rick Warrens 1995 book The Purpose Driven Church, which sold over one million copies ...
Elvis died on one, and Charles V, ruler of Germany and Spain, was born on one. Although we use them every day, most of us know very little about toilets. This unique history contends that civilization began not with the written word, but with the toilet. Through advertisements, diaries, museum catalogs, and anecdotes, The Porcelain God explores the history of the toilet and the customs and manners that surround it. The result is a fascinating study of both ancient and contemporary cultures. The earliest toilets, found in the Indus Valley in the third millennium B.C., evolved over five thousand years into the high-tech twentieth-century toilets of the Japanese. In the past, disposing of human waste consisted of collecting the offense in a pot and throwing the contents out the window. It was said in medieval times that London Bridge was built for wise men to go over and fools to go under. London Bridge originally contained public latrines serving the thirty-eight houses built on it. The waste from the
