Dr. Walle J.H. Nauta, Institute Professor emeritus and one of the worlds leading authorities on the anatomy of the brain, died March 24, in Mt. Auburn Hospital. He was 77 and lived in Newton. He had been hospitalized a few days with a blood infection, a family member said. Dr. Nauta, one of the founders of the modern field of neuroscience, made singular contributions to the understanding of the structure and connectivity of the brain.. Some 40 years ago, he developed techniques that enabled experimenters to trace fiber connections in the brain. He and other researchers used the method to chart systems in the forebrain of the mammalian species, in particular the limbic systems and the corpus striatum.. Later he and his colleagues at MIT experimented with new technical approaches involving the use of enzymatic and radioactive tracer substances in the analysis of fiber connections in the brain.. According to his colleagues and family, Dr. Nauta remained particularly proud of the stain he ...
institutional capability, past performance, and limitations on subcontracting compliance. After reviewing Social Solutions position, the agency filed a submission opposing Social Solutions reimbursement of costs.. DISCUSSION. For the reasons that follow, we recommend that the agency reimburse Social Solutions its reasonable costs for filing and pursuing certain allegations regarding the agencys evaluation in the areas of cost realism and technical approach. However, we do not recommend the reimbursement of Social Solutions costs for filing and pursuing the other allegations.. Before discussing the allegations, we observe that where a procuring agency takes corrective action in response to a protest, we may recommend that the agency reimburse the protester its protest costs where, based on the circumstances of the case, we determine that the agency unduly delayed taking corrective action in the face of a clearly meritorious protest, thereby causing a protester to expend unnecessary time and ...

When NIST initiated the WTC investigation, it made a decision not to hire new staff to support the investigation. After the June 2004 progress report on the WTC investigation was issued, the NIST investigation team stopped working on WTC 7 and was assigned full-time through the fall of 2005 to complete the investigation of the WTC towers. With the release and dissemination of the report on the WTC towers in October 2005, the investigation of the WTC 7 collapse resumed. Considerable progress has been made since that time, including the review of nearly 80 boxes of new documents related to WTC 7, the development of detailed technical approaches for modeling and analyzing various collapse hypotheses, and the selection of a contractor to assist NIST staff in carrying out the analyses. It is anticipated that a draft report will be released by early 2007 ...

G Protein-coupled Receptors - Molecular Pharmacology provides a clear summary of the current knowledge in this fast-evolving field. The book sets out with an introduction tosignalling molecules and their receptors, and an overview of the technical approaches used to investigate these interactions. Structural, functional and especially pharmacological aspects of GPCRs are then discussed in more detail and much attention is devoted to the analysis and interpretation of experimental data. The now widespread use of recombinant cell lines, receptor mutants and related artifices in drug research is critically evaluated. Special attention is also devoted to topical but often poorly understood concepts, such as insurmountable antagonism, inverse agonism and allosteric interactions. By combining general information with the major state-of-the-art concepts in GPCR research, the book equips the reader with the necessary background for understanding and critically evaluating the current literature ...
Reminder. Inactivation reason of LIMITED/WAS A is not allowed for any content after the July 2018 release. The WAS A association refset has not been updated thereafter.. Background. The question of whether terminally ill patients should artificially be given fluids has been debated since before palliative care became a recognised specialty. Arguments have been adduced from physiological, comfort, legal psychological, and emotional perspectives. Palliative care specialists agree that the priority is preventing the symptoms associated with dehydration, rather than the dehydration itself. However, the majority of terminally ill patients are cared for in settings outside hospices, and those admitted to hospital will tend to be exposed to a more technical approach. There are no randomised controlled trials in this area, and although an ethical minefield, we should not be afraid to manage individual patients according to the principles of palliative care where control of symptoms, not normalising of physiological variables, is the primary objective.. ...
If we return to first principles we can see that wine is never natural! Because although alcoholic fermentation takes place naturally in grapes, without human intervention it all too quickly ends up as vinegar which is the real natural result. So it is all very much a matter of degree. Some so called natural wines are distinctly variable bottle by bottle. Interestingly, (leaving aside Austria and Germany where producers are still conscious of the antifreeze scandal) the natural wine movement is largely confined to France - a country with a Roman Catholic heritage and where not so long ago wines with what would today be regarded as faults were routinely on sale - the Good Lord had made the wine, as it were, and that was how it turned out, faults and all. The Protestant background of somewhere like Australia has led to a much more widespread technical approach in winemaking as a way of improving nature. Of course this can lead to a certain standardisation, but for inexpensive wines this ...
PAUL ALIVISATOS: My vote is that in three years, we will have just inaugurated six large-scale centers that bring together a few hundred scientists and engineers to develop brain activity mapping tools, each one designed to answer specific types of questions or make measurements in specific animals, such as zebra fish or rats. We could then exploit the technical approach best suited for tackling each of our big questions. That would be a really exciting development.. HONGKUN PARK: I think a lot of people in the neuroscience community will be using existing tools to study hundreds, thousands, or even tens of thousands of neurons in the cortical regions. A lot of nanoscientists, working with neuroscientists, will be busy building next-generation tools to fill in the brain activity map. It will be an exciting time.. TKF: If we really understood how the brain worked, what could we do? Could we create true artificial intelligence that thinks like us?. PAUL ALIVISATOS: I want to be cautious about the ...
There were two organisations, one for the preservation and reconstruction of a roman ship found in Woerden and an organisation that wanted to reconstruct a prehistoric building. Together with ABN Amro (a bank) the park was financed and built. Reopened in 1996 on a surface of 6 hectares, the full Dutch archaeological past is presented from Mesolithic (8000 BC) until 1350 AD. The park holds many house reconstructions which are often presented by archaeotolks (archaeo-interpreters) - there are not many signs and no showcases. There are 10 prehistoric areas, 14 Roman and 22 medieval ones. Roman and Medieval meals are presented. More often than at other places, the atmosphere at Archeon is like at a living history event, with many actors and activities to experience. At some times, these events have a purely archaeological or technical approach ("textiles") most of the times however, they are culturally determined ("Celts", "Vikings ...

Complex diseases such as cancer, arthritis, diabetes, endometriosis, Alzheimers, and many others, all involve interactions of tissue cells with immune system cells via molecular communication processes, and resulting disease consequently arises from dysregulated signaling network activities governing pathological cell behaviors. We are employing combined experimental and computational systems biology approaches to understand these communication and signaling processes at multiple scales, integrating across multiple intracellular pathways, multiple extracellular factors, and multiple cell types, with emphasis on in vivo studies in animal models and human subjects. This talk will present an overview of our paradigmatic concept, technical approaches, and example applications.. ...

The seat on the new toilet cracked after less than a year. No more cheap shit, we resolved.. Just for the record, it wasnt me that split it. Im not going to name the culprit, but he has broken his share of chairs, as well - not because hes too heavy (he isnt), but because he cant sit still.. There are some things it just doesnt make sense to be impatient about, you know? Like meditation - the whole point is to practice stillness and letting go, right? Only one side of the O-shaped seat split, though, so it still held together well enough for my daily practice, such as it is. The bit of a jagged edge helped prevent me from getting too comfortable, kept me focused.. But this is a guesthouse, and the owners - my parents - became concerned that some of their guests might not take it as lightly as I do. So this afternoon, Dad finally splurged and bought a new seat. The Philippine tarsier (Tarsius syrichta), known locally as mawmag in Cebuano/Visayan and mamag in Luzon, is an endangered species of tarsier endemic to the Philippines. One of the worlds smallest primates, which up to now had been mistakenly described as being ordinarily silent, has all along been using inaudible ultrasound to communicate. No bigger than a mans hand, the Philippine tarsier can hear and emit sounds at a frequency that effectively gives it a private channel for issuing warnings or ferreting out crickets for a night-time snack, a study published on Wednesday found. Only a handful of mammals are known to be able to send and receive vocal signals in the ultrasound range, above 20 kilohertz (kHz), including some whales, domestic cats and a few of the many species of bats. And few of these can squeal, screech or squawk at the same sonic altitudes as the saucer-eyed tarsier, Tarsius syrichta, researchers found. Its finely-tuned ears are capable of picking up frequencies above 90 ...

In most courses at UiO, you can take the examination up to three times. You can not resit an examination if you have used the maximum number of examination attempts.. A masters thesis that has received the examination result "Fail" may only be resubmitted once as a new examination attempt, and then by the agreed date and in reworked form. A masters thesis that has received the examination result "Pass" cannot be resubmitted in reworked form.. The restriction on the number of examination attempts applies in total for each course. The restriction also applies in the case of new admission to the same or another study programme which incorporates the course.. If you take the same examination several times, the best grade will apply as the final grade.. If you have a strong reason, you can normally apply for an extra examination attempt. Toxic nanoparticles that float around us have been discovered in "abundant" quantities in our brains, according to a recent study. This discovery, which looked at the brain tissues of 37 people, raises concerns about how our brains are affected by pollution, especially because of a link between magnetite particles and Alzheimers disease. While the new study hasnt proved that, it still raises good points.. Get the Free Tracker App to find a Nintendo Switch in Stock. "This is a discovery finding, and now what should start is a whole new examination of this as a potentially very important environmental risk factor for Alzheimers disease," said Prof Barbara Maher, at Lancaster University, who led the new research. Anatomical variations of the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) muscle and tendon unit are frequently reported by anatomists and clinicians. Anatomical muscle variations of the FDS and its tendons may include variations of muscle belly, presence of accessory or duplicate tendons, abnormal tendon connections, and absence of muscle or tendon components. Such variations may or may not have clinical implications. This report presents a case not described previously: a unilateral accessory muscle of the flexor digitorum superficialis which was connected by a thick tendon to the flexor digitorum superficialis muscle; it was directed proximally to the insertion of the medial epicondyle of the humerus, next to the superficialis head of the pronator teres muscle ...

With 1.6 million deaths per year, lung cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. One reason for this high number is the absence of a preventive medical examination method. Many diagnoses occur in a late cancer stage with a low survival rate. An early detection could significantly decrease the mortality. In recent decades, certain substances in human breath have been linked to certain diseases. Different studies show that it is possible to distinguish between lung cancer patients and a healthy control group by analyzing the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in their breath. We developed a sensor based on photoacoustic spectroscopy for six of the most relevant VOCs linked to lung cancer. As a radiation source, the sensor uses an optical-parametric oscillator (OPO) in a wavelength region from 3.2 µm to 3.5 µm. The limits of detection for a single substance range between 5 ppb and 142 ppb. We also measured high resolution absorption spectra of the biomarkers compared to the data currently
Early breast cancer detection, most favorably in a pre-cancerous (in situ) state is critical for the course of the disease and its outcome. Currently, mammography screening is the standard method of medical prevention. However, the compliance among women invited for mammography is low ranging from merely 20 to 89 percent depending on country and age group. Similar to colorectal cancer prevention by coloscopy, a much easier and less stressful examination method might find stronger compliance. Researchers of the University Medical Center of Aachen have identified biomarkers, which are suitable for detection of early breast cancer and its precancerous stages in blood, based on the measurement of both grade and intensity of CpG promoter methylation of i.e. the genes SPAG6, NKX2-6 and PER1. A combination of two genes or the inclusion of other genes (e.g. DKK3 or ITIH5) may also apply. It is very likely that a blood-based test would increase compliance of women to medical prevention programs of breast ...
This Minor Field Study was carried out during November and December in 2011 in the Mount Elgon District in Western Kenya. The objective was to examine nine small-scale farming household´s land use and socioeconomic situation when they have joined a non-governmental organization (NGO) project, which specifically targets small-scale farming households to improve land use system and socioeconomic situation by the extension of soil and water conservation measures. The survey has worked along three integral examinations methods which are mapping and processing data using GIS, semi structured interviews and literature studies. This study has adopted a theoretical approach referred to as political ecology, in which landesque capital is a central concept. The result shows that all farmers, except one, have issues with land degradation. However, the extent of the problem and also implemented sustainable soil and water conservation measures were diverse among the farmers. The main causes of this can both ...
Where the diagnostic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the prostate reveals unusual results which should be confirmed by means of a biopsy (removal of samples) to clarify whether it is a malignant disease (prostate cancer) or a benign, inflammatory change of the prostate, a targeted MRI-guided prostate biopsy can be performed, since ultrasound examination methods do not allow for a visualisation or a targeted biopsy of these findings. In contrast to saturation biopsy (in which up to 40 samples are taken), this technique requires no anaesthesia and in contrast to conventional ultrasound-guided biopsy, only 2-4 cylindrical samples are removed, which involves far less stress and pain for the patient. This technique is aimed at the targeted, high-precision removal of samples. Owing to years of experience and interdisciplinary collaboration between urology and radiology, the biopsy only takes about 25 minutes (adjustment of the biopsy system to the suspicious finding and targeted sampling). We ...
Musculoskeletal research is embedded in the clinical unit of musculoskeletal imaging (section head M. Reijnierse, MD) and is focused on musculoskeletal tumors, and inflammatory and degenerative disorders of the musculoskeletal system. Within these clinical imaging themes our endeavors are geared towards unraveling pathophysiology, monitoring effectiveness of therapy, increasing cost-effectiveness of imaging, and developing new technical approaches in data acquisition and post processing.. To this end we closely collaborate with other clinical and scientific groups within our department and within the LUMC.. Diagnosis and image guided minimally invasive treatment of musculoskeletal neoplasms and tumor-like lesions have been main research topics for many years in close collaboration with the Leiden based Netherlands Committee on Bone Tumors. Research on the topic of joint disease is focused on the early detection of disease in rheumatoid arthritis and spondyloarthritis as well as the assessment of ...
The smell of honeysuckle suffuses my memories of childhood summers, along with the buzzing crescendo of cicadas and the sight of trees enveloped in tan gauzy webs. Caterpillar trees. They fascinated me, especially when I could detect little bodies writhing within their translucent layers. They were at once beautiful and creepy.. I recalled that dual-edged delight while viewing Laura J. Snyders exhibition, "Lightness and Weight," currently on display at Angelo. About her intaglio prints and ink-and-gesso paintings, Snyder writes, "These works evoke the space between tenderness and cruelty, beautiful and grotesque, lightness and weight.". As she explores these contrasts, Snyder shifts techniques and varies the sizes of her compositions, alternating between color and grayscale images. Most of her abstract compositions revolve around wrapping and unwrapping and offer viewers seductive yet disturbing glimpses of what lurks inside cocoon-like shapes.. Snyders technical approach mirrors her interest ...

The authors profiled either unselected [3-5], triple-negative [1], or estrogen-receptor positive breast cancer [2] utilizing various technical approaches, including whole-genome sequencing, whole-exome sequencing, copy number profiling, and transcriptome analysis. Curtis and colleagues [5] integrate expression and copy number to identify ten subtypes of breast cancers and reveal aberration hotspots responsible for these groups. These hotspots contain known (ERBB2, MYC) and candidate driver loci that can impact patient prognosis. Stephens and colleagues [4] combined copy-number and sequencing to identify a number of novel driver genes (MAP3K1, MAP2K4, MAP3K13, and AKT2), albeit each at relatively low frequency. Together, however, these mutations all impact JUN signaling activation and encompass approximately 50% of all breast tumors, thus identifying a major recurrent pathway alteration in breast cancer. Banerji and colleagues [3] similarly utilize sequencing to identify driver mutations and copy ...
In 2012, Boston Childrens Hospital held the international CLARITY Challenge-an invitation to interpret genomic sequence data from three children with rare diseases and provide a meaningful, actionable report for clinicians and families. (Click for more background on the children, findings and winners.). The full proceedings, published March 25 in Genome Biology, concluded that while the technical approaches were markedly similar from center to center, the costs, efficiency and scalability were not. Most variable, and most in need of future work, was the quality of the clinical reporting and patient consenting process. The exercise also underscored the need for medical expertise to bring meaning to the genomic data.. That was CLARITY 1. CLARITY 2, focusing on cancer genomics in children, promises to be exponentially more complex.. Led by Boston Childrens and the Center for Biomedical Informatics at Harvard Medical School (HMS-in collaboration with the Dana-Farber/Boston Childrens Cancer and ...
Relationships of lacertid lizards were assessed on the basis of 84 primary and 112 binary characters drawn mainly from morphology, including features of the skeleton, external anatomy, various internal soft part systems and two aspects of behaviour. Among features not previously used, or not fully investigated before, are structure of the septomaxilla and nasal passages, arranged of the xiphisternal cartilages, mite pockets, kidney position, ulnar nerve arragement, thoracic fascia, aspects of the hemipenis and its associated muscles, female genitalia and jaw muscles. On the basis of parsimony analysis and compatibilty treatment of this character set, the Lacertidae fall into two main portions: A paraphyletic Palaearctic and Oriental group of primitive forms, from which is derived a holophyletic assemblage of Ethiopian and advanced Saharan and Eurasian taxa. The former group ist not fully resolvable, but Psammodromus and Gallotia appear to be sister groups and are probably related to Lacerta ...

An x-ray scanning imaging apparatus with a rotatably fixed generally O-shaped gantry ring, which is connected on one end of the ring to support structure, such as a mobile cart, ceiling, floor, wall, or patient table, in a cantilevered fashion. The circular gantry housing remains rotatably fixed and carries an x-ray image-scanning device that can be rotated inside the gantry around the object being imaged either continuously or in a step-wise fashion. The ring can be connected rigidly to the support, or can be connected to the support via a ring positioning unit that is able to translate or tilt the gantry relative to the support on one or more axes. Multiple other embodiments exist in which the gantry housing is connected on one end only to the floor, wall, or ceiling. The x-ray device is particularly useful for two-dimensional multi-planar x-ray imaging and/or three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) imaging applications.
20110927 Traxxys - Henk Akse - "Continuous Crystallization with Ni-Tech OBFC technology". Traxxys is an SME, focusing on sustainability in process industry with specialization in Process Intensification (PI). Traxxys presents the NL GUTS Technoproject with the Ni-Tech Oscillating Baffled Flow Crystallization technology from Scotland. This continuous OBFC process features a tubular reactor with a large number of O-shaped baffles, through which the crystallizing liquid flows. On this flow an oscillation is superimposed, leading to forward and backward moving of that flow. Over the length of the tube temperature regimes can be controlled, residence times between baffles changed and energy input varied. This results in a narrower particle size distribution, better controlled crystals, a much smaller reactor and increased production capacity. The results with Purac, Croda and Cosun were presented.. There are commercial installations in pharmaceutical and specialty chemicals industry. ...

Look, Miss, I know you were expecting me to say something like "Not for someone as young and precious as you, darling", and I realize as a male I am obligated to have my brain turn to mush when a pretty woman talks to me. When I was younger you probably could have wrapped me around your little finger. However, there comes a point in most guys lives when the testosterone level drops to the point that his brain can continue to function if a hot woman flirts with him. I think I hit that point somewhere in my low to mid thirties. Prior to that point women could (and every so often did) get me to do all sorts of stupid things for them. So, I guess you either have to build a time machine and go back a few years or youre gonna have to take your shot with the younger prosecutor down the hall ...

Introduction The flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) is a flexor of the digits of the hand and has been reported to have varying rates of agenesis. We conducted a study to determine the prevalence of agenesis of the FDS in an East African population by clinical examination. Materials and methods A prospective study was conducted using three clinical tests among patients and students in a large teaching hospital in East Africa to determine the presence of the FDS in the fifth digit. Results The overall rate of absence was 2.5% with unilateral absence at 1.5% and bilateral absence at 1.0%. The over-all difference between males and females was not statistically significant (p=0.654). Discussion Our findings are in contrast to many studies worldwide. There is a paucity of studies ...

Visual acuity was assessed with the person wearing his or her spectacles, so that the day to day vision, rather than the potential best possible vision, was measured. This allowed prevalence estimates that reflect the actual visual impairment problem existing at the time of the survey. Recent studies such as the Baltimore eye survey,10 the US Salisbury eye evaluation study,11 and the Blue Mountain eye study5 have reported the visual acuity after refraction and best correction at the time of the survey.. Major difficulties in comparing results from different surveys arise from non-standardised definitions, criteria, and examination methods.12 Glaucoma is particularly problematic as there is no generally agreed definition for it. The criteria used in our study to define a case of primary open angle glaucoma were clearly defined and set at a higher severity of optic disc damage than those used in several earlier studies and were similar to those in a much cited Australian study.13 Detailed ...
To the editor: Dr. Frommeyers excellent article entitled, "Recertification: A Status Report," in the September 1973 issue (Ann Intern Med 79:441-443) provided us with insight into the American Board of Internal Medicines views of the need to develop a system for evaluating the internists current professional capability. It also reemphasized the recognized deficiencies of the examination method for evaluating clinical competence.. Few could successfully argue that initial certification does not indicate completion of the basic educational program of the internist. Nor could they argue that there is no need to monitor ones continued competence and clinical abilities, so that the ...
