Silicon Valley has become shorthand for a globally acclaimed way to unleash the creative potential of venture capital, supporting innovation and creating jobs. In The Venture Capital State Robyn Klingler-Vidra traces how and why different states have adopted distinct versions of the Silicon Valley model. Venture capital seeks high rewards but is enveloped in high risk. The authors deep investigations of venture capital policymaking in East Asian states (Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore) show that success does not reflect policymakers ability to replicate the Silicon Valley model. Instead, she argues, performance reflects their skill in adapting a highly lauded model to their local context. Policymakers are contextually rational in their learning; their context-rooted norms shape their preferences. The normative context for learning about policy-how elites see themselves and what they deem as locally appropriate-informs how they design their efforts. The Venture Capital State offers a novel ...

Implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) devices with or without cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT-D) have the ability to continuously monitor heart rate variability, daily heart rate, and patient activity. Changes in these measures have been associated with heart failure prognosis. In addition, ICD or CRT-D devices also have the ability to measure daily intrathoracic impedance. Previous data have demonstrated that device-based intrathoracic impedance measurements correlate with pulmonary capillary wedge pressure and fluid retention, both of which are common measures of heart failure status. The objective of this study is to evaluate whether the heart rate variability, daily heart rate, and/or intrathoracic impedance can be used in conjunction with other methods to determine if patients are ready for hospital discharge. This will be the first step in potentially developing an inpatient care strategy which includes implantable device data. It is hypothesized that device diagnostic data ...
Per 10,000 population. Hospitalization for stroke (cerebrovascular disease) is defined as a first-listed diagnosis on the medical record of 430-438, as coded according to the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification. This includes hospitalizations for acute strokes, transient ischemic attack, and for late effects of stroke. Rates were calculated using U.S. Census Bureau 2000-based postcensal civilian population estimates.. † 95% confidence interval. In 2010, hospitalization rates per 10,000 population for stroke for males and females increased with increasing patient age. For males, the rate per 10,000 ranged from 14.7 for those aged ,65 years to 285.7 for those aged ≥85 years. For females, the rate ranged from 11.6 per 10,000 population for those aged ,65 years to 277.4 for those aged ≥85 years. Within each age group, the rates for males and females were similar. The Texas Medical Board has asked five abortion physicians to appear before a hearing on October 28 regarding multiple violations discovered during an undercover investigation of abortion clinics across the state. Operation Rescue led the three-month investigation into Texas abortion clinics, and these Medical Board complaints are likely the first of several to come. By using a combination of investigative techniques and direct legal action, Operation Rescue is making a real impact in the Life movement. They have been endorsed by several national Pro-Life organizations, and even pro-abortion group NARAL has admitted they are relentless.. Operation Rescues Texas efforts unearthed multiple violations at all abortion clinics they investigated, including unsanitary clinic conditions, improper disposal of aborted baby remains, illegal dumping of confidential patient records, and violation of informed consent laws. Operation Rescue filed complaints against fourteen Texas abortionists based on their ...

PHOENIX, AZ (May 7, 2013) - A prolific thief who broke into homes by smashing doors and windows with a rock faces the prospect of spending the rest of his life behind bars after pleading guilty today in the second of two criminal cases brought against him. Robert James Neese (D.O.B. 3/15/1953), whose modus operandi earned him the moniker rock burglar, was also previously convicted in a separate case on eight counts of Burglary and seven counts of Theft last April. He faces a maximum sentence in excess of two hundred years in prison when he is sentenced by the Honorable Pamela Svoboda on May 21, 2013.. Thanks to a combination of skilled investigatory techniques and diligent prosecution, this criminal has been brought to justice and will no longer be free to victimize members of our community, remarked Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery. We now look forward to the imposition of an appropriate sentence that will hold this defendant accountable for the extensive harm he has caused, he ...
Toxic torts assert that exposure to a given agent is responsible for physical or psychological effects in the claimant. Yet the claim often arises well after a person may be tested for exposure. The Forensic Panel s expertise includes a familiarity with the range of chemicals and toxins and how they present, in history, signs and symptoms, when exposure has occurred.. A forensic toxicologist must examine the probability of harmful effects of the environment on a person. Important features include time-related aspects of the exposure and the dosage of pollutants with which a person may come into contact.. Environmental forensics uses classical analytical chemistry tools with investigative techniques in interpretation to identify the source of environmental contaminants as well as the approximate amount of time that contaminants were released. These cases require careful consideration about the available data on causation, and an awareness of what physical effects link more directly to which ...
On January 18, 2012, the New York Times published an article regarding a recent study conducted by the National Science Agency (NSA) on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations (NHTSA) regulation of increasingly complex electronic systems in automobiles. The study specifically assessed the NHTSAs role in investigating recent Toyota acceleration issues. The NSA concluded that the NHTSA does not currently have the necessary knowledge to successfully oversee the increasingly complex electronic systems used in vehicles.. The National Science Agency expanded on its conclusion and added recommendations on how the NHTSA could improve its regulation of electronics systems in automobiles. The NSA recommended that the NHTSA improve its current investigative techniques, further develop its technical help, and advocate for the installation of black boxes in cars, which would allow recording of car crash data. Furthermore, the NSA encouraged the NTSA form an advisory panel of experts to assist ...

Kia Kokalitcheva. WASHINGTON DC: Silicon Valley got a black eye a decade ago when its big venture capital foray into expensive and nascent cleantech didnt pan out-but its recently renewed interest in a wider scope of technologies that can tackle the climate crisis could be different this time around.. Why it matters: Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time, and the tech industrys innovation could be a powerful tool to stem it.. Flashback: Several years after the Dotcom bust, a number of prominent venture capital firms like Kleiner Perkins, DFJ, and Khosla Ventures bet big on clean tech as the next big thing. Venture capital jumped from about $300 million a year in cleantech investments between 1996 and 2005, to $1.7 billion in 2006, and peaked at $4.3 billion in 2011, according to the NVCA. And while some investors did well and backed successful companies, the spectacular crumblings of companies like Solyndra and Fisker kept a lot of VCs and limited partners away for ...

Methods We analysed data for patients undergoing major non-cardiac surgery in 2008 from The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database (a prospective validated outcomes registry from 211 hospitals worldwide in 2008). We obtained anonymised data for 30-day mortality and morbidity (cardiac, respiratory, CNS, urinary tract, wound, sepsis, and venous thromboembolism outcomes), demographics, and preoperative and perioperative risk factors. We used multivariate logistic regression to assess the adjusted and modified (nine predefined risk factor subgroups) eff ect of anaemia, which was defi ned as mild (haematocrit concentration ,29-,39% in men and ,29-,36% in women) or moderate-to-severe (≤29% in men and women) on postoperative outcomes.. Interpretation Preoperative anaemia, even to a mild degree, is independently associated with an increased risk of 30-day morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing major non-cardiac surgery. ...
This is where you take the go-to-market strategy you developed in stage two, coupled with the improvements youve made to your product through your pilot users, and launch a full-scale plan to attract, win and keep customers. This is where you start to grow your team substantially for the first time, largely by hiring business development representatives, inside sellers, outside sales representatives, marketers and customer success reps, depending on the talent needs of your go-to-market strategy. Typically, the venture capital employed at this stage is called your A-round, or the first of what may be many future rounds of venture capital, and its often sourced from organized venture funds. Venture funds are a unique type of investment vehicle. Unlike angel investors, where individuals make the decisions about what startups to invest in with their own money, venture funds are made up of limited partners or LPs who sign over money to the care of a group of managing partners who are ...
Little is known about the etiology of hospitalizations among HF patients. Fang et al. (21) examined hospitalizations from the National Hospital Discharge Survey from 1979 through 2004. They found that the proportion of hospitalizations with HF as a first-listed diagnosis remained at approximately 30% over the study period. However, there was a decline in the proportion of admissions due to coronary or other cardiovascular diseases, and an increase in the proportion due to noncardiovascular diseases. Curtis et al. (8) examined hospital readmission rates among Medicare beneficiaries hospitalized with HF from 2001 through 2005 and found that approximately 27% of readmissions were due to HF. This analysis did not include patients without a prior HF hospitalization and only examined the first readmission, and thus cannot provide information on the total burden of hospitalizations. To date, the cause of hospitalization among community HF patients, and potential temporal changes, remain unclear.. The ...
Editors Note: This is Redpoint VCs Tomasz Tunguz second article in a series examining trends in the public and private technology markets. Last week, we discussed four trends in the public technology markets. Today we compare the current state of the US venture capital to historical norms. First, we will examine the inflows into the venture capital market: dollars raised by venture capitalists. Then we will explore the outflows, VCs investment pace, contrasting the dollars deployed over time. Last, we will investigate market sentiment and consequent price fluctuations.
This paper examines how organizational structure affects behavior and outcomes, studying the performance of different types of venture capital organizations. We find a strong positive relationship between the degree of specialization by individual venture capitalists at a firm and its success. When the individual investment professionals are highly specialized themselves, the marginal effect of increasing overall firm specialization is much weaker. The poorer performance by generalists appears to be due to both an inefficient allocation of funding across industries and poor selection of investments within industries. Venture capital organizations with more experience tend to outperform those with less experience.
Venture capital firms build teams with some of the smartest talent out there - individuals who have built companies, graduated at the top of their class from top universities, and can navigate ambiguity and pinpoint billion-dollar opportunities.. Venture capital is an incredibly multi-disciplinary job, says Carlie Smith, talent manager at OpenView Venture Partners. You need to have research skills to understand markets and develop theses, you need to be analytical enough to understand operating metrics, and be persuasive enough to win a deal.. Smith points out that in junior or mid-level roles, VC firms must often look for competencies and traits that are indicators for future successes, since candidates dont yet have the experience to check the boxes of what VC firms need.. VC firms are often looking for candidates who are unicorns, which is why its crucial for them to ask the right questions. So, we asked recruiters and hiring managers from several firms to nominate their favorite ...

Background: Non-hemorrhagic cerebrovascular disease (NH-CVD) is one of the leading causes of hospitalization in the United States (US). We describe the trends in NH-CVD hospitalizations in the US over a twelve-year period.. Methods: We abstracted and analyzed data for NH-CVD hospitalizations, from 1999 to 2010, from the National Hospital Discharge Survey - a national probability sample of hospitalizations at US non-federal short-stay hospitals. NH-CVD hospitalizations were defined as hospitalizations whose principal diagnoses were coded using the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification codes 433-438. NH-CVD hospitalization rates were calculated for those 15 years and older, as well as among demographic sub-groups defined by age, race, gender, and geographical region. A multivariate logistic regression was modeled, with NH-CVD hospitalization as the outcome and time period as the main predictor, while controlling for age, gender, race, region, and ...

Too often, the traditional approach to compliance included reactive adoption of quality solutions, resulting in a collection of disparate systems with little visibility across the enterprise. In the new paradigm, the emphasis on collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, plus integration across business functions in support of continuous improvement, supports implementation of modern 100% cloud- based EQMS to help medical device companies evolve.. Following tradition has caused the medical device industry to fall decades behind in its approach to quality, resulting in capabilities which are significantly lower than other industries. As proof, consider the six-sigma defects-per-million evaluation comparing airline baggage handling and medical device manufacturing. Airlines achieve a score of more than 4 sigma while medical device companies lag behind, scoring less than 4 sigma.. In the new Case for Quality initiative, all 16 participating medical device companies report they would ...

The ISO standards for medical devices are covered by ICS 11.100.20 and 11.040.01.[27][28] The quality and risk management regarding the topic for regulatory purposes is convened by ISO 13485 and ISO 14971. ISO 13485:2003 is applicable to all providers and manufacturers of medical devices, components, contract services and distributors of medical devices. The standard is the basis for regulatory compliance in local markets, and most export markets.[29][30][31] Additionally, ISO 9001:2008 sets precedence because it signifies that a company engages in the creation of new products. It requires that the development of manufactured products have an approval process and a set of rigorous quality standards and development records before the product is distributed.[32] Further standards are IEC 60601-1 which is for electrical devices (mains-powered as well as battery powered), EN 45502-1 which is for Active implantable medical devices, and IEC 62304 for medical software. Based on data from the National Deaths in Custody Program, this paper discusses gender specific trends in custodial deaths in Australia over the period 1980 to 2000. The paper presents statistics on Indigenous and non Indigenous female and male deaths in custody for the period, including statistics on the type of custody, most serious offence, and cause and manner of death. Of the 75 females who died in custody over this period, the majority of Indigenous female deaths occurred in police custody, whilenon Indigenous women were more likely to die in prison. Overall, self inflicted death by hanging was the leading manner of death for females (and males), although Indigenous women were more likely than non Indigenous women to die from natural causes. The paper also discusses five case studies of female deaths in custody, both Indigenous and non Indigenous.
Heart failure-related hospitalizations increased between 1979 and 2004. This increase was consistent with other earlier reports of national hospitalization data (1-4,11-13); however, our report provides the most recent data. This increase was greater for hospitalizations among patients with heart failure as an additional diagnosis than among those with heart failure as the first-listed diagnosis. Moreover, among hospitalizations with any mention of heart failure, the proportion with a first-listed diagnosis of CHD and other CVD declined. However, the proportions of hospitalizations with first-listed diagnoses of respiratory or other non-CVD increased and surpassed CHD as the most common first-listed diagnosis. During the same period, in-hospital mortality declined among patients hospitalized with heart failure. This decline was greater among hospitalizations with heart failure as the first-listed diagnosis than among those with an additional diagnosis of heart failure.. The growing burden of ...

A retrospective review of the cases brought by the Massachusetts U.S. Attorneys Office Health Care Fraud Unit between September 2008 and September 2009 reveals a high number of cases involving medical devices as compared to drugs or other medical products. Medical devices include a wide range of products, such as implants, stents, heart pacemakers, fetal monitors, x-ray equipment, and thermometers. They are used in patients for the purposes of diagnosis, therapy or surgery. By definition, medical devices do not achieve their primary intended purposes through chemical action and are not dependent upon being mobilized to achieve their primary intended purposes. Medical devices often require approval by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) before they may be legally distributed and marketed. The gamut of products that may be considered medical devices are reflected in the cases brought by the Health Care Fraud Unit over this past year.. We study whether venture capital firms with higher status and reputation are more risk tolerant due to their position in the field as opposed to lower status venture firms which might be more risk averse, due to less proven capabilities. We explore this possibility by considering whether or not role incongruity and gender stereotyping by venture capital firms lead to perceptions of women entrepreneurs as more risky investments. Results show that VC firm status produces a difference in risk tolerance and risk aversion in terms of investments in companies with women entrepreneurs, with higher status firms more likely to invest in women entrepreneurs. In addition, we find that companies with women CEOs are likely to be older and bigger and receive lower valuations than companies with men CEOs.
Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues are becoming more and more significant for comprehensive evaluation of companies responsible investing activities. Over the years, the growth in corporate responsibility to the society and policies towards environmental consciousness has necessitated the need for comprehensive ESG integration into investment decision-making process and the impact of such activities on company‟s financial performance. Although, studies suggest that there is an increasing trend in ESG considerations among large-cap companies and public investors, little have been written about the link with private investors. Venture capital and private equity investors have an important role in shaping current innovative companies to become future leaders in the market and therefore posses the ability to influence entrepreneurs towards sustainability by incorporating ESG issues in their investment selection processes.. This study sought to find out if venture capital and private ...

Analyzing 10 risk factors with stepwise multiple logistic regression tech niques, they developed a model combining information on four of the risk factors to predict a patients probability of getting a surgical wound infection. Then, with information collected on another sample of 59,352 surgical patients admitted in 1975-1976, the validity of this index as a predictor of surgical wound infection risk was verified. This paper examines the spatial dynamics and emerging locational hierarchies of the venture capital (VC) industry in China, largely as a result of the global expansion of VC investors from the US and other advanced economies. Based on a comprehensive database compiled by the author from the best available sources, this is the first systemic geographic study on the VC industry in an emerging economy. This study finds that the rising cluster of VC supply and demand in Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen was enabled by the juxtaposition of spatial proximity effects, investment syndication, and interregional office networks within Chinas unique institutional environment. It further demonstrates that the spatial dynamics of the globalizing venture capitalism has to be understood in light of the geo-institutional mechanisms shaping the whole VC cycle of fundraising-investing-divesting. © 2011 Pion Ltd and its Licensors ...

Next year could be a fundraising drought for promising medical device start-ups in Minnesota.. Venture capitalists are feeling less confident about making investments in 2012, with 58 percent of them predicting fewer investments in biopharmaceutical and medical device businesses, according to a national survey from the National Venture Capital Association.. Despite the fact that venture capitalists and entrepreneurs are well-positioned to thrive, externalities are keeping optimism at bay, said Mark Heesen, the associations president. Issues impacting the industry include economic instability in the United States and abroad, along with public policy issues, he added.. In Minnesota, the problem has been exacerbated, because the majority of venture capital investments in the state go toward medical device companies. Last year, venture capital investments hit its lowest level in 15 years of record keeping. The association has been active in trying to change how the nations Food and Drug ...

Sample: All hospitals with 1,000 beds or more in the original universe of short-stay hospitals were selected with certainty in the sample. All hospitals with fewer than 1,000 beds were stratified, the primary stratum depending on size and geographic region. Within each of these 24 primary strata, the allocation of the hospitals was made through a controlled selection technique so that hospitals in the sample would be properly distributed with regard to type of ownership and geographic division. Sample hospitals were drawn with probabilities ranging from certainty for the largest hospitals to 1 in 40 for the smallest hospitals. Of the 535 hospitals in the sample, 413 were in scope and agreed to participate. The within-hospital sampling ratio for selecting sample discharges varied inversely with the probability of selection of the hospital. The smallest sampling fraction of discharged patients was taken in the largest hospitals, and the largest fraction was taken in the smallest hospitals. In ...

Our study indicates that perioperative hyperglycemia is associated with increased risk of hospital complications in patients undergoing noncardiac surgery. Perioperative hyperglycemia significantly increased the risk of pneumonia, systemic blood infections, urinary tract infection, skin infections, and ARF during the postoperative period. In addition, we found a significant association between blood glucose concentration and mortality; however, the impact of hyperglycemia on mortality rate was more significant among patients without a history of diabetes compared with those with known diabetes before admission.. The association between hyperglycemia and increased risk of hospital complications and mortality in critically ill (1,8,12,13) patients undergoing major cardiovascular surgery (12,16,17) is well established. Less information is available on the significance of hyperglycemia in those undergoing general and noncardiac surgery. Small observational studies in noncardiac surgery patients have ...
