Morphological and molecular data were analyzed using parsimony to trace character evolution within Anagallis s.l., including Anagallis, Asterolinon, Pelletiera, Lysimachia nemorum, and L. serpyllifolia, which are distributed among two sister clades. The first clade, comprising Anagallis arvensis, A. foemina, A monelli, Asterolinon, Pelletiera, Lysimachia nemorum, and L. serpyllifolia is supported by synapomorphies such as an annual, repeatedly branching habit, sessile leaves, flowers in almost all leaf axils, and membraneous slightly dentate calyx margins, of which all but the last are homoplasious within Anagallis s.l. The second clade, comprising Anagallis species only, is supported by a large number of synapomorphies, of which the majority are floral features. Placement of then taxa, for which no DNA was available, is porposed based on morphological characters evaluated in the ligth of the result of the phylogentis analysis of sequenced taxa.. ...

Anagallis arvensis is a ANNUAL growing to 0.1 m (0ft 4in) by 0.4 m (1ft 4in). It is hardy to zone (UK) 7 and is not frost tender. It is in flower from June to August, and the seeds ripen from July to September. The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and is pollinated by Insects. The plant is self-fertile. Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It prefers dry or moist soil.
Anagallis is a genus of about 20-25 species of flowering plants in the family Primulaceae, commonly called pimpernel and perhaps best known for the scarlet pimpernel referred to in literature. The botanical name is from the Greek, ana, again, and agallein, to delight in, and refers to the opening and closing of the flowers in response to environmental conditions. These are annual or perennial plants, growing in tufts on weedy and uncultivated areas. The stems are prostrate or decumbent. The leaves are opposite, rarely whorled, and sometimes with a few alternate leaves at the end of the stem. They are usually ovate in shape with a cordate base. Some of the species produce flowers of various colors. The flowers are radially symmetrical and have 5 sepals. The corolla consists of a short tube and 5 lobes. The tube may be so short that the lobes appear to be separate petals. They are usually solitary in the leaf axils, but sometimes are on short spikes at the end of the stem. Pimpernel flowers ...

crossed some forms, such as the common red and blue pimpernels (Anagallis arvensis and coerulea), •which the best botanists rank as varieties, and found them absolutely sterile, we may doubt whether many species are really so sterile, when intercrossed, as he believed. It is certain, on the one hand, that the sterility of various species when crossed is so different in degree and graduates away so insensibly, and, on the other hand, that the fertility of pure species is so easily affected by various circumstances, that for all practical purposes it is most difficult to say where perfect fertility ends and sterility begins. I think no better evidence of this can be required than that the two most experienced observers who have ever lived, namely Kölreuter and Gärtner, arrived at diametrically opposite conclusions in regard to some of the very same forms. It is also most instructive to compare-but I have not space here to enter on details-the evidence advanced by our best botanists on the ...

Recent phylogenetic research shows that Anagallis, Centunculus, Glaux, and Trientalis are nested within Lysimachia and, therefore, must be included in it (other options exist, but in this case they would lead to the formation of numerous, poorly defined genera; Hao et al. 2004, Anderberg et al. 2007, Manns and Anderberg 2009). We have given a dynamic description of several aspects of growth: the amount of cell division, cell division orientation and cell expansion patterns associated with SAM morphogenesis. Analysis reveals that it requires a minimum of 4 days of continuous observation to reveal the essential aspects of cell behavior associated with primordium growth. We have mapped the location of primordium progenitor cells to a point early enough that they are close to the slowly dividing cells in the CZ. Sector boundary analysis in inflorescence meristems (IM) of Arabidopsis thaliana has led to the prediction that a flower bud arises from a set of four progenitor cells (Bossinger and Smyth, 1996). Our observations show that number of primordium progenitor cells varies across successive plastochrons, as must be true if the cells continue to divide. The progenitor cells that represent the primordium at stages P-1 and P-2 are higher in number than those comprising primordia at stages P-3 and P-4. Therefore, number of ...
APEX Surface Care has reached a partnership with Allied BioScience to deploy SurfaceWise, which APEX claims to be the only long-lasting protective disinfectant approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to kill and prevent the spread of pathogens, including the novel coronavirus, according to a press release from APEX.. While the company is working with the EPA to extend durability claims, independent studies have already shown durability of the product for up to 90 days, according to APEX.. SurfaceWise2 is a critical tool that transforms how any building that serves the public can employ lasting protection from COVID-19. There simply isnt another solution like it that can make the same claims, says Thomas Holland, CEO of APEX Surface Care. Weve been tracking surface coating technology closely through the pandemic and have been hesitant to recommend these solutions, as most companies are making false claims about the efficacy of their products. We are proud to partner with Allied ...
The research goal of our laboratory is to understand intracellular morphogenesis at a molecular level; in particular the complex events that underlie cell division. Our major focus is the mitotic spindle, the dynamic microtubule-based machine essential for the correct distribution of chromosomes to each daughter cell. We would like to understand how the spindle forms and functions, and how its size is determined. We apply diverse and interdisciplinary techniques, including an in vitro celluar extract system, as well as chemical, proteomic and biophysical approaches.

Pliny speaks of its value in liver complaints, and its generic name Anagallis (given it by Dioscorides) is derived from the Greek Anagelao, signifying to laugh, because it removes the depression that follows liver troubles. The Greeks used it for diseases of the eye, and Gerard and Culpepper affirm that it helpeth them that are dim-sighted, the juice being mixed with honey and dropped into the eyes. It is a gallant, Solar herb, of a cleansing attractive quality, whereby it draweth forth thorns and splinters gotten into the flesh. Used inwardly and applied outwardly, Culpepper tells us, it helpeth also all stinging and biting of venomous beasts or mad dogs. And again, the distilled water or juice is much celebrated by French dames to cleanse the skin from any roughness, deformity or discolourings thereof. Another old writer says the Herb Pimpernel is good to prevent witchcraft, as Mother Bumby doth affirm.. My version of the blue pimpernel doesnt boast of any medicinal properties, ...
Begoniaceae is a large flowering plant family with about 1500 different species and hundreds of hybrids. Mature begonia plants range in size from a few inches high to over 12 feet high and the flowers, foliage colors and sizes are very diverse. Most have fleshy stems. Some produce underground tubers or rhizomes. The American Begonia Society divides begonias into 7 informal groups by growth habit: cane-like, rex-cultorum, rhizomatous, semperflorens, tuberous, trailing or scandent, thick-stemmed and shrub-like.. The Rex-cultorum Group, commonly called Rex begonias, are usually rhizomatous and can vary in size and habit. They are grown primarily for their showy foliage. The leaves come in every color, pattern and shade, and every size and shape. Rex begonias are typically planted outdoors in mild climates as an annual summer bulb; alternatively, they can be grown as perennials in containers and brought indoors during the winter. Technically, Begonia spp. is an organ called an enlarged hypocotyl and ...

How to care for Begonia maculata: Begonia maculata needs bright indirect light, well-aerated soil that dries a bit between waterings, fertilization every 2-4 weeks, and temperatures of 65°F (18°C) to 86°F (30°C). However, you must have a good balance because these plants can easily be prone to root rot. Moisten the potting mix to prepare it for the begonia propagation. 3. Place the soilless mix in a clear container, such as a plastic shoebox or plastic cup, and thoroughly moisten the mix it without leaving it soggy. Conditions: Considered perennials in tropical and semitropical climates, Rex begonias are frost tender and typically grown as annuals or houseplants in North America. Cut off the leaf stalk, then, using a sharp blade, carefully cut through the major veins, spacing cuts about 2.5cm (1in) apart. For the larger leaved plants, begonia propagation can begin with a single leaf. Rex Begonia Plant Propagation. There are hundreds of cultivars of B. rex to choose among, usually classified ...

Today was a sad day in the garden, the first weekend after the first freeze. I spent a good bit of time trimming frost damage from some of my beautiful plants. Then to make it a perfect storm, this is also the day I had to cut the beautiful wedding flowers into bits for the compost pile. I love finished compost, but it is always sad to have to put such beautifulness on the pile. So, Im posting a picture of one of the begonias to remind me that life is a circle. This white begonia is the only one in a whiskey barrel of red ones. Some of these begonias became part of the compost pile today, along with the wedding flowers and other stuff from the yard. There they will slowly revert to compost, which will feed other plants and bring beauty back into the world. ...

A lecture course on morphogenesis for fourth-year Moscow State University Specialist Diploma students specializing in embryology is described. The main goal of the course is to give the students an extensive theoretical background based on the tenets of the modern theory of Self-Organization and to show them how important this theory is for the proper understanding of developmental events. The corresponding mathematics are bound as tightly as possible to the actual morphogenetic processes. All of the lectures take the format of an active dialogue between the students and a tutor.

Growing Begonia geranioides Begonia geranioides is easyly propagated from seed, as well as tip and leaf cuttings. Cuttings are best taken in midsummer and treated with a rooting hormone. They root easily in river sand or silica sand in an intermittent mist-spray area or in a warm, moist, shaded area.. Hand pollination is necessary for a successful seed harvest in cultivation. Generally, begonias hybridise easily, so care should taken where a number of species are growing in the same area.. Seed is best sown in early spring or summer, in a moist but well drained medium. Once seedlings reach 30 mm they can be pricked out and potted into 120 150 mm pots. We have found success with a well-mixed combination of 40% compost and 60% pine bark medium with a handful of organic fertilizer (Bounceback ®). In cultivation, under optimum conditions, B. geranioides can flower for an extended period from midsummer to winter.. References and further reading ...
Species of Begonia are richly represented in limestone karst areas across the Sino-Vietnamese border. More than one hundred species were known, many of which were documented recently. In continuation of our systematic studies of Asian Begonia, we report six species of Begonia that are unknown to science, namely B. caobangensis [sect. Platycentrum], B. circularis, B. melanobullata, B. langsonensis, B.locii and B. montaniformis [sect. Coelocentrum] from Northern Vietnam. Diagnostic features that separate them from morphologically allied species are provided. Somatic chromosome numbers were determined, which supports their placement in the respective sections. Foliar SEM microphotographs were taken and described. A careful study of the literature, herbarium specimens and living plants, both in the wild and in cultivation in the experimental greenhouse, supports the recognition of the six new species, which are described and illustrated.

Based on our knowledge of the cell division pattern of the early developing mandibular region (see above) we were able to look at its morphogenesis at a very high level of resolution. By means of single cell labeling with the fluorescent dye DiI we were able to reconstruct and analyze the clonal composition of the mandibular region from the beginning of ectodermal proliferation up to the differentiation of the mouthparts. The cell labeling reveals that the paragnaths have their origin in the area I and area II which comprises columns 1 to 3 of region E(0). The mandibles originate from cells of the areas II and III (columns 2 to 4). Areas I and II contribute also to the sternal region and the mandibular ganglia whereas area III forms parts of the tergites as well. In more posterior segments, columns 1 and 2 mainly contribute to the formation of segmental ganglia and probably sternites, and columns 3 to 5 mainly give rise to limbs [36, 46]. Hence, when compared with clonal composition of the ...
