Genetic diversity in a cajuí (Anacardium spp.) germplasm bank as determined by ISSR markers | GMR | Genetics and Molecular...
Some species of Anacardium (Anacardiaceae) produce fruits and pseudofruits that are smaller than those of the common cashew (Anacardium occidentale) and, for this reason, are known collectively in Brazil as cajuí. Despite their economic value in the food market and their important environmental and ecological functions, cajuí trees remain underexploited. We employed nine inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers to characterize two presupposed populations of cajuí comprising 25 accessions maintained in the germplasm bank of Embrapa Meio-Norte (Teresina, PI, Brazil). Population structure and relationships between accessions were determined in order to generate knowledge that could contribute to genetic improvement programs and better management of this germplasm bank. A high degree of polymorphism (91.3%) was observed among the accessions. Analysis of molecular variance and Bayesian analysis demonstrated that the two presupposed populations were not genetically differentiated but ...
Cashews - In Defense of Plants
I love cashews. I cant seem to get enough of them. Did you know that when you eat a cashew, you are only experiencing part of the fruit? Indeed, cashews are kind of weird and many of us in temperate climates never get a chance to fully appreciate what the cashew has to offer. You may also be surprised to learn that cashews and poison ivy are cousins.. Cashews or Anacardium occidentale as they are known scientifically are large trees belonging to the family Anacardiaceae. This makes them cousins of plants like poison ivy, sumac, pistachio, and mango (just to name a few). Like other members of this family, cashews produce chemicals that can cause severe skin allergies in humans. For cashews, this chemical is known as anacardic acid and is similar in its chemical makeup to urushiol. Because of this, cashews must be roasted before they can be sold. As I stated above, the cashew nut is only part of the reproductive effort of this species. They are not nuts in the true sense but rather a drupe ...

Salt tolerance of precocious-dwarf cashew rootstocks: physiological and growth indexes
INTRODUCTION In Brazil, cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) cultivation is concentrated in the Northeast region, mainly in the States of Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte and Piauí, which produce 126 thousand tons of cashew nut, of which approximately 28 thousand tons are exported, resulting in an annual income of about US$135 million in foreign exchange (FNP Consultoria e Comércio, 1998). The cultivation is characterized as activity of great socio-economical importance for the region, absorbing labour and generating foreign exchange for the country. Besides cashew nut, the pseudo-carp obtained from cashew has also great potential use in the most different forms and it may even become the main product of cashew exploration (Ramos et al., 1996). Based on the false premise that the plant could be cultivated under conditions of extreme water adversity, the majority of the cashew orchards are non-irrigated, with non-grafted seedlings of common cashew trees, which results in low productivity. The ...

Linn. (Anacardiaceae) is a plant largely used in Africa for the treatment of different diseases. In Côte dIvoire its commonly used for the treatment of hypertension. The present study was carried out in order to assess the effects of Anacardium occidentale extract (ANOE) on cardiovascular parameters in animal models. A mercury manometer kymograph of Ludwig was used to measure the blood pressure of normotensive rabbits in control conditions (normal physiological solution) and under the influence of ANOE. The contractile activity of an isolated rat heart was also measured in control conditions and under the influence of ANOE in different physiological media using a modified Langendhorff (1895) apparatus. The aqueous Anacardium occidentale (ANOE) bark extract applied intravenously in different doses (12, 40, 90, and 167 mg/kg b.w.), produced a significant dose-dependent decrease in blood pressure of previously normotensive rabbits (up to 89% vs control). Atropine (1 mg/ml) pre-treatment failed ...

However, it is possible to purchase raw cashews, roasted cashews, or cashews that have been seasoned with various flavorings. This means you can use them as a snack or as an addition to salads, smoothies, stir-fries and other meals. With each serving of cashews, you harness incredible health benefits that set them apart from other nuts.
Polyphasic Characterization of Pigmented Strains of Xanthomonas Pathogenic to Cashew Trees
The export of cashew (Anacardium occidentale) nuts generates millions of dollars for the Brazilian economy annually. However, production may be limited by the occurrence of diseases that affect cashew trees, such as Xanthomonas spot and angular leaf spot, which are caused by pigmented strains of Xanthomonas and Xanthomonas citri pv. anacardii, respectively. Thirty-one pigmented strains of Xanthomonas were characterized for phenotypic, pathogenic, and molecular attributes. These strains were similar to X. citri pv. anacardii in phenotypical characteristics, sensitivity to antibiotics and copper compounds used in agriculture, epidemiology, and repetitive sequence-based polymerase chain reaction (rep-PCR) profiles. When inoculated into Brazilian pepper, cashew, mango, and hog plum seedlings, the pigmented strains of Xanthomonas and X. citri pv. anacardii produced similar symptoms. However, the pigmented strains of Xanthomonas were more aggressive toward cashew plants than toward the other hosts ...

Re: Would nut oils such as walnut act as a deterant to fire ants on birdhouses?
If you have something that repels or kills insects, will it repel or damage birds?. Walnut oil is a drying oil (heavy in linoleic and linoleic acid esters). You would get there more easily with traditional drying oils such as linseed or tung. I dont expect any special repellent effect. Cedarwood contains cedrene and cedrol which are known insect repellents. Add a cedarwood panel to the interior. http://juniper.orst.edu/adams.htm Cashew nut shell liquid (oil of cashew nut shell, Anacardium occidentale) contains cardol (irritant) and anacardic acids. They are quite nasty - contact dermatitis. It air cures in thin layers and retains its nastiness. Kiurushi sap - Japanese lacquer, Toxicodendron verniciflua - is rich with branched chain alkylated catechols (1,2-dihydroxybenzenes) and resorcinols (1,3-dihydroxybenzenes) just like poison ivy. It also contains a trace of the enzyme laccase that air oxidizes it to the famous black Japanese lacquer coating (but *only* in thin layers!) Nastiness is ...

Cashew - Wikipedia
The species is native to Northeastern Brazil and Southeastern Venezuela, and later was distributed around the world in the 1500s by Portuguese explorers.[1][11][3] Portuguese colonists in Brazil began exporting cashew nuts as early as the 1550s.[12] The Portuguese took it to Goa, India between 1560 and 1565. From there, it spread throughout Southeast Asia, and eventually Africa. The cashew tree is large and evergreen, growing to 14 m (46 ft) tall, with a short, often irregularly shaped trunk.[13] The leaves are spirally arranged, leathery textured, elliptic to obovate, 4-22 cm (1.6-8.7 in) long and 2-15 cm (0.79-5.91 in) broad, with smooth margins. The flowers are produced in a panicle or corymb up to 26 cm (10 in) long; each flower is small, pale green at first, then turning reddish, with five slender, acute petals 7-15 mm (0.28-0.59 in) long. The largest cashew tree in the world covers an area around 7,500 m2 (81,000 sq ft) and is located in Natal, Brazil. The fruit of the cashew tree is an ...

Assessment of soil quality using soil organic carbon and total nitrogen and microbial properties in tropical agroecosystems
Assessment of soil quality is an invaluable tool in determining the sustainability and environmental impact of agricultural ecosystems. The study was conducted to assess the quality of the soils under arable cultivation, locally irri-gated and non-irrigated, forestry plantations of teak (Tectona grandis Lin.) and gmelina (Gme- lina arborea Roxb.), and cashew (Anacardium occidentale Lin.) plantation agro ecosystems using soil organic carbon (SOC), soil total ni-trogen (STN) and soil microbial biomass C (SMBC) and N (SMBN) at Minna in the southern Guinea savanna of Nigeria. Soil samples were collected from soil depths of 0-5 cm and 5-10 cm in all the agro ecosystems and analyzed for physical, chemical and biological properties. All the agro ecosystems had similar loamy soil texture at both depths. The soils have high fer-tility status in terms of available phosphorus and exchangeable calcium, magnesium and po- tassium. The irrigated arable land had significantly (P | 0.05) higher SOC and STN in both soil

Cashew Archives - Caju Company - The Cashew Company
How can there be such differences between say, a can of organic nuts and a can of those right from a grocery store shelf?. The differences are actually profound. Take a package of cashews purchased from us here at Caju versus a can of cashews from a store shelf. Caju does not purchase nuts cheaply from growers all over the world and then blend them together to sell at premium prices. This sort of thing is what the large scale producers do, and it is why they have to roast and salt the nuts so heavily.. For instance, when you snack on a package of our high quality Caju cashews you notice that they are of uniform size, color, and quality. Each nut is packed with the unique and sweet flavor that cashews from Vietnam are known for producing.. If you take a handful of cashews from the grocery store brand you notice they are covered in an oily slick and that you distinguish the saltiness more than any flavor from the nut. This has to happen because they buy from producers all over the world. The nuts ...

Peanuts and cashew nuts are commonly consumed snacks for their delicacy. Fungal organisms invade pods of the nuts while still on the tree or root tuber or during harvesting and storage. These fungi release toxic substances called aflatoxins. Aflatoxins are mycotoxins, which are highly hepatotoxic, mutagenic and teratogenic and affect public health. This study is aimed at assessing the health risks involved in the ingestion of the aflatoxins present in these nuts. Hundred packaged samples of peanut and cashew nut (50 packets each) were bought from five different markets in Enugu metropolis between June and July 2019. The infected seeds were sorted and cultured onto Saboraud dextrose agar and incubated at 25°C for 7 days, other biochemical tests were done using the standard procedure. Twenty Albino rats were fed with these nuts for 1 month. The fungal aflatoxin contamination and the histopathology assessment of the liver tissue were done.
