In 1974, in preparation for the United States Bicentennial, the American Nurses Association (ANA) created a seven-member committee to recognize the dedication and achievements of professional nurses in a Hall of Fame. Fifteen inaugural women were selected as inductees and the committee recommended that the nomination process and inductions become a permanent vehicle for recognition.[1] In 1982, National Nurses Day was proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan to be celebrated on May 6[2] and in conjunction with the celebration, the ANA at their annual convention, inducted six more nurses.[3] The ANA board approved periodic addition of members thereafter, inducting new members in 1984, 1986, and 1996. In 1996, the criteria changed so that inductees did not have to be deceased and that inductions occur biennially.[1] ...

The International Myeloma Foundation Nurse Leadership Board (NLB) used Melnyk and Fineout-Overholts (2011) levels of evidence as a systematic framework for the appraisal and grading of the NLBs consensus statements and evidence-based recommendations. • Nurses should teach patients with MM about their increased risk for DVT, measures they can take to prevent DVT (ambulation to prevent venous stasis and avoidance of dehydration), the signs and symptoms of DVT (such as edema and pain in the extremity), and the need to report any DVT symptoms immediately (Lyman et al., 2015; Rome, Doss, Miller, & Westphal, 2008). • Nurses and clinicians should use risk stratification to determine patients risks of developing VTE. Factors that increase VTE risk include a history of prior VTE, surgery, anthracycline chemotherapy, high-dose corticosteroids, hospitalization, and heart disease. All high-risk patients who take IMiDs should also take aspirin, LMWH, warfarin, or fondaparinux prophylaxis. Preventive ...

As the nineteenth century drew to a close, the needs of hospitals prompted the establishment of training schools for nurses and the germination of the concept of professional nursing. The first such training school in New Hampshire was opened at the New Hampshire State Hospital in 1888.. As a result of these developments, nurses began to organize themselves for the improvement of patient care. The forerunner of the American Nurses Association was formed in 1896 and that of the National League for Nursing in 1893.. In New Hampshire, nurses who had graduated from the states training school programs were also feeling the need to organize, and in April 1906 fifty of them met in Concord to discuss the establishment of a permanent association. A month later, on May 28, 1906, at a second meeting held at the state hospital, the Graduate Nurses Association of New Hampshire was formed. It changed its name to the New Hampshire State Nurses Association in the 1940s. (For more information, see A Brief ...

Recently I had the opportunity to assist on a medical mission trip to Honduras. Here I share my experience to help others who might be interested in serving on missions.. About Honduras. Honduras is the second poorest nation next to Haiti in the Western Hemisphere. According to the 2013 statistics over 64% of the population is below the poverty level and 54% of households are in extreme poverty averaging a daily income of less than $1.25. Another horrifying statistic is that 23 out of 1000 children 5 years and younger will die due to sickness and malnutrition.. Obstacles in gaining access to healthcare for the people of Honduras include the great distance people have to travel with too rough of terrain, lack of funds to purchase such items, and limited medical resources throughout the country. The closest hospital in San Pedro Sula is 76.39 kilometers from the nearest city Pena Blanca, which can be more than an hour travel with a vehicle through rough terrain down the mountainside. ...

The literature on general management research often identifies leadership style as a critical success factor impacting individual and organizational performance. In this paper, commissioned by the Project Management Institute, the authors survey the recent literature on project management to determine whether project management researchers consider leadership style a critical success factor when managing projects and whether they believe leadership style impacts project outcome. This paper opens by outlining the purpose of this study and then describing the general management literature on leadership styles and competence in relation to four elements: 20th century leadership theory; team behavior; managerial behavior; and leadership competence. It then looks at the literature on project management and discusses the research on the relationship between a project managers leadership style and competence and project outcome and success. It then identifies and explains six points concerning the ...

This comparative focus group study explored nurses experiences and perceptions regarding parental participation in infant pain management in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). A total of 87 nurses from 7 NICUs in Finland, Sweden, and the United States participated in focus-group interviews (n = 25). Data were analyzed using deductive and inductive thematic analysis. Nurses experiences and perceptions varied considerably, from nurses being in control, to nurses sharing some control with parents, to nurse-parent collaboration in infant pain management. When nurses controlled pain management, parents were absent or passive. In these cases, the nurses believed this led to better pain control for infants and protected parents from emotional distress caused by infant pain. When nurses shared control with parents, they provided information and opportunities for participation. They believed parent participation was beneficial, even if it caused nurses or parents anxiety. When nurses collaborated ...

PATEL, CJ; BEEKHAN, A; PARUK, Z and RAMGOON, S. Work-family conflict, job satisfaction and spousal support: An exploratory study of nurses experience. Curationis [online]. 2008, vol.31, n.1, pp.38-44. ISSN 2223-6279.. In recognising the highly stressful nature of the nursing profession, the added burden of hospital staff shortages, and patient overload, the present study explored the impact of work on family functioning, its relationship to job satisfaction and the role of spousal support in a group of 80 female nurses working in a government hospital. Using a descriptive, correlational design, the relationships among job satisfaction, work-family conflict (WFC) and spousal/partner support were explored. The hypotheses that job satisfaction and WFC would be negatively correlated, that job satisfaction and spousal support would be positively correlated, and that WFC and spousal support would be negatively correlated, were tested using correlation techniques. All hypotheses were confirmed. The ...

Mortons neuroma (also known as Morton neuroma, Mortons metatarsalgia, Intermetatarsal neuroma and Intermetatarsal space neuroma.) is a benign neuroma of an intermetatarsal plantar nerve, most commonly of the second and third intermetatarsal spaces (between 2nd−3rd and 3rd−4th metatarsal heads), which results in the entrapment of the affected nerve. The main symptoms are pain and/or numbness, sometimes relieved by removing narrow or high-heeled footwear.[citation needed] Sometimes symptoms are relieved by wearing non-constricting footwear.[citation needed] Some sources claim that entrapment of the plantar nerve because of compression between the metatarsal heads, as originally proposed by Morton, is highly unlikely, because the plantar nerve is on the plantar side of the transverse metatarsal ligament and thus does not come in contact with the metatarsal heads.[citation needed] It is more likely that the transverse metatarsal ligament is the cause of the entrapment. Despite the name, the ...
Total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) or sometimes transferrin iron-binding capacity is a medical laboratory test that measures the bloods capacity to bind iron with transferrin. It is performed by drawing blood and measuring the maximum amount of iron that it can carry, which indirectly measures transferrin since transferrin is the most dynamic carrier. TIBC is less expensive than a direct measurement of transferrin. The TIBC should not be confused with the unsaturated iron-binding capacity or UIBC (LOINC 2501-5, 22753-8 & 35216-1). The UIBC is calculated by subtracting the serum iron from the TIBC. Taken together with serum iron and percent transferrin saturation clinicians usually perform this test when they are concerned about anemia, iron deficiency or iron deficiency anemia. However, because the liver produces transferrin, alterations in function (such as cirrhosis, hepatitis, or liver failure) must be considered when performing this test. It can also be an indirect test of liver function, ...
Critical care nurses are registered nurses who have specialized training which prepares them to provide care to patients with life threatening illnesses, injuries or complex medical issues. Intensive care unit nurses work in specialized units; however some use their expertise to provide educational services to patients rehabilitating from critical health problems. New graduate nurses are not usually hired directly into critical care units. Most employers require that nurses applying to work in critical care areas have a minimum of one to two years of general nursing experience prior to being considered for employment in intensive care.. Intensive care nurses are required to have certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training prepares nurses and other health care providers to provide emergency care to patients suffering from cardiac arrest, life threatening cardiac arrhythmias, and other medical emergencies.. Critical care nurses need to be ...
Computer-related accidents have caused injuries and fatalities in numerous applications. Normal Accident Theory (NAT) explains that these accidents are inevitable because of system complexity. Complex systems, such as computer-based systems, are highly interconnected, highly interactive, and tightly coupled. We do not have a scientific methodology to identify and quantify these complexities; specifically, NAT has not been operationalized for computer-based systems. Our research addressed this by operationalizing NAT for the system requirements of safety-related computer systems. It was theorized that there are two types of system complexity: external and internal. External complexity was characterized by three variables: system predictability, observability, and usability -the dependent variables; internal complexity was characterized by modeling system requirements with Software Cost Reduction dependency graphs, then quantifying model attributes using 15 graphtheoretical metrics the independent ...

The paper by Feldman et al. (1) in this issue of the Journalis the first published report about a new percutaneous mitral valve technology, the edge-to-edge Evalve clip (Evalve Inc., Menlo Park, California). This is an important step into a new era of catheter-based valve procedures and one that will be compared and contrasted with the ongoing excellent surgical results obtained with mitral valve repair of the myxomatous regurgitant mitral valve. The investigators, who are among the leading cardiac interventionalists in the country, have performed a carefully thought out phase I U.S. Food and Drug Administration safety trial of 27 low-risk patients with myxomatous valve disease, a group of patients for whom surgical repair of the mitral valve is safe and effective. They have clearly documented the safety of this procedure, and have also documented that there is a significant learning curve as it relates to fluoroscopy time, echocardiography time, and anesthesia time. The investigators have been ...
