My main goal was to summarize the clinical trial database so that we could take a fresh look at this vitamin D question, stated Philippe Hujoel of the University of Washington, who conducted the review.. While vitamin Ds role in supporting bone health has not been disputed, significant disagreement has historically existed over its role in preventing caries, Hujoel noted. The American Medical Association and the U.S. National Research Council concluded around 1950 that vitamin D was beneficial in managing dental caries. The American Dental Association said otherwise - based on the same evidence. In 1989, the National Research Council, despite new evidence supporting vitamin Ds caries-fighting benefits, called the issue unresolved.. Current reviews by the Institute of Medicine, the U.S. Department of Human Health and Service and the American Dental Association draw no conclusions on the vitamin D evidence as it relates to dental caries.. Such inconsistent conclusions by different ...

We know that we will be outspent by at least 1000 to 1 by the pro-fluoridation lobby. This lobby includes the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Preventions Oral Health Division; the health departments in every U.S. state and the heath agencies in every other fluoridated country. These all use taxpayers money to push this practice on their citizens. It also includes the American Dental Association (reputed to raise $100 million a year) and the dental organizations in other fluoridating countries. Surprisingly to some, it now even includes the Pew Charitable Trusts, a multi-billion foundation. Less surprisingly, it also includes the American Council on Science and Health (ACSH) an industry-funded group that has never found a chemical it couldnt defend (including dioxin) and is a long-term and aggressive supporter of fluoridation ...

There is no difference between the two degrees -- both dentists have received the same education and completed the same curriculum requirements set by the American Dental Associations Commission on Dental Accreditation. The difference is merely semantics -- some institutions award a DMD degree, while others award a DDS degree. Generally, three or more years of undergraduate college education plus four years of dental school are required to graduate and become a general dentist. State licensing boards accept either degree as equivalent, and both degrees allow licensed individuals to practice the same scope of general dentistry.. ...

February is National Childrens Dental Health Month, an initiative by the American Dental Association to raise awareness about the importance of oral health.. Here in Happy Valley, area dental professionals discuss proper hygiene for children and the significance of developing good habits at an early age.. Treby Hoak, registered dental hygienist at Donald Marks Family Dentistry on University Drive, says children should start seeing a dentist at the age of six months, based on new recommendations by the ADA. Visits should be twice a year.. Before children grow teeth, parents or caregivers can use a wash cloth to wipe their mouths, Hoak says. This practice helps reduce bacteria when teeth do come in.. Tooth brushing should begin at the first sign of teeth, she says. "Brushing at an early age is very, very important.". Teeth should be brushed before a child goes to bed. Hoak stresses that children should not go to bed with a bottle or other object as this can cause rotting overnight.. A childs ...

Toothbrushes and floss accompanying glucose-monitoring kits may be a good idea for diabetic patients. At the latest annual meeting of the American Dental Association, Marjorie Jeffcoat, DMD, dean of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, outlined current strategies related to diabetes and oral health. This topic is timely, considering the epidemic of individuals with type 2 diabetes, she noted. In fact, many physicians who specialize in diabetes consider periodontal disease to be a major complication of the disease. Diabetics are more prone to all types of infections, including gum disease. Dr. Jeffcoat stressed that diabetics need to make dental checkups a priority. She advises patients to visit the dentist at least 4 times a year. "We want to pick up any early signs of gum disease before it becomes too severe," she said. To prevent oral surgery, Dr. Jeffcoat tells patients that the first line of defense is proper cleaning above and below the gum lines. At home, patients ...
Dentist Dr. Behzad Nazari, from Antoine Dental in Northline, TX and the surrounding areas of North Houston, is excited to help the community through a new charity program. By partnering with Houston Food Bank, hungry families and children will receive help while residents get a free dental cleaning, exam and x-rays.. There is more info about the cause here: http://smarturl.it/bn-fooddrive. Dr. Nazari has been actively involved in bringing smiles to the community in Houston for over 18 years, and he has a concern about the way many Americans pay little attention to their oral healthcare. "Most people have the mistaken belief that if there is no considerable pain in their mouth, they need not prioritize a regular checkup. Yet, this is so far from the truth," said Dr. Nazari.. Studies published recently by the American Heart Association and the American Dental Association report that delaying dental care can lead to gum diseases, which can then cause problems arising from weakened immunity, which ...
