THURSDAY, July 30, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- An updated guideline from the American Cancer Society calls for more simplified cervical cancer screening, administered less often.. The new guideline calls for an initial cervix screening at age 25, followed by the human papillomavirus (HPV) test every five years, continuing through age 65, the guideline says. These streamlined recommendations can improve compliance and reduce potential harms, said Debbie Saslow, a managing director at the American Cancer Society. They are made possible by some important developments that have allowed us to transform our approach to cervical cancer screening, primarily a deeper understanding of the role of HPV and the development of tools to address it. Nearly all cervical cancer is caused by strains of HPV. The HPV test is more accurate than the Pap test and can be done less often, the ACS said. Until all labs transition to the new standard of primary HPV testing, the guideline says HPV tests can be used in ...

According to his autobiography (Bobst: autobiography of a pharmaceutical pioneer, 1973), Bobst was doing war bond work in 1945 when Governor Walte Edge, of New Jersey, and Eric Johnson, the czar of the motion picture industry, came to see me on behalf of the American Cancer society.... It had been run like a small mom and pop business, content to putter along with limited results.... My first step was to enlist the support of the strong team that had volunteered to help with the bond sales, because I knew them and I knew their capabilities. [Besides, with the war ending, he could hijack them to serve his purposes - cast] Without letting them know the reason, I invited all of my county bond chairmen and some other people of importance -- about thirty in all -- to join me for cocktails and dinner at a club. We enjoyed a convivial evening and a good dinner before I got up to reveal the purpose of the meeting. I explained, then, that I was about to undertake a mission -- a spiritual crusade to save ...

I like a statement that the American Cancer Society released recently. Together with our millions of supporters, we save lives and create more birthdays by helping you stay well, helping you get well, finding cures and fighting back against this disease. Thanks to research funded by the American Cancer Society, many cancers that were once considered a death sentence can now be cured and for many more people their cancer can now be treated effectively. It is way to simplistic to be focusing on a cure. The American Cancer Society is focusing on cures. The fact that many cancers that were once considered a death sentence can now be cured should give us hope. The fact that six years ago when I got involved with Relay For Life the treatment that my Mom will undergo tomorrow would not have been available to her gives me hope. The 97 to 100 percent cure rates that have been seen with renal cryoablation gives me hope. Relay For Life gives me hope ...

The guideline was developed in response to the need for guidance on how best to care for the growing number of head and neck cancer survivors who potentially face both acute and chronic disability, write the authors. Head and neck cancer survivors should be provided with timely and appropriate support and referral to address physical, psychosocial, and practical effects after treatment. The guideline is the fourth in a series of cancer survivorship care guidelines from the American Cancer Society to provide primary care and other clinicians who care for cancer survivors with clinical follow-up care recommendations on how to provide comprehensive cancer survivorship care to adult posttreatment cancer survivors as they transition from treatment to long-term survivorship, with a goal of improving care and health and quality of life of cancer survivors. The American Cancer Society has survivorship guidelines to address the cancer survivorship care needs of survivors of prostate, colorectal, and ...

American Cancer Society (NAACCR Member). A validation study was conducted to compare verified self-reports of cancer diagnoses to information in population based cancer registries. Results demonstrate that linkage with the nationwide network of state cancer registries can be a highly sensitive method of identifying diagnoses of most types of cancer among participants in large nationwide research studies.. For the study, registry staff at 23 state cancer registries conducted standardized linkages with a subset of participants in Cancer Prevention Study 3 (CPS-3), a relatively new American Cancer Society (ACS) study including over 300,000 cancer-free U.S. men and women enrolled in 35 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. ACS researchers plan to follow CPS-3 participants through linkage with state cancer registries for at least 20 years in order to study how a wide range of lifestyle, nutritional, medical, genetic, environmental, and other factors are related to risk of cancer. Physical activity after breast cancer diagnosis has been linked with prolonged survival and improved quality of life, but most participants in a large breast cancer study did not meet national physical activity guidelines after they were diagnosed. Moreover, African-American women were less likely to meet the guidelines than were White women.. Published online in Cancer, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the findings indicate that efforts to promote physical activity in breast cancer patients may need to be significantly enhanced.. The study, Racial differences in physical activity among breast cancer survivors: implications for breast cancer care, was led by Ms. Brionna Hair, epidemiology doctoral student at the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health.. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the American Cancer Society recommend that adults engage weekly in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity or 75 ...

The American Cancer Society has given the state of Wisconsin a failing grade when it comes to colorectal cancer prevention. Its one of only a few states without any laws requiring insurance providers to cover the cost of a colorectal cancer screening. Luckily, lawmakers are considering creating such a law.. People in Wisconsin want their lawmakers to do everything they can to combat cancer in this state and theres no reason they should continue to accept an F grade on this matter, said Bob Meyer, Wisconsin Government Relations Director for the American Cancer Society.. Lets hope for change in Wisconsin!. Here in Canada, only one province has yet to commit to creating a population-based screening program- Newfoundland. Quebec is still working on its pilot program, and PEIs launched recently. The CCAC continues to advocate for equal access to screening and treatment options for all provinces.. The Norwegian Nurses Associations (NSF) and NHO Abelia agree on a new collective agreement. Thus, Norways longest nurse strike is over.. - It has been a long and necessary strike to get an agreement and we are pleased that we got through in the end, says federal leader in NSF, Eli Gunhild By.. - It was important for us that the nurses in the Cancer Society should retain their pay and working conditions after the transition to NHO. Weve got this. We have secured our members the right to strike in the agreement and minimum wage rates that follow the level for nurses in the industry, she continues.. When the Cancer Society went from the employers association Virke to NHO Abelia, the nurses were considered to be functionaries and thus lost the collective agreement they had as nurses. Nurses thought the new agreement meant loss of both a right to strike and minimum wage rates and actioned to keep the previous agreement.. Bye praise the nurses who have endured what she says is the longest strike in ...
The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), in collaboration with the American Cancer Society (ACS), have released updated guidelines regarding follow-up care for breast cancer survivors. The updated guidelines were recently published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.. There is an estimated 3.1 million breast cancer survivors alive today in the United States. At present, 90% of patients diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S. will be alive 5 years following their diagnosis. As such, it is imperative to address issues that are unique to breast cancer survivors to improve their quality of life and enable them to remain an integral part of society.. Treatment for breast cancer varies considerably, and is dependent upon the type of breast cancer, the extent of its spread, patients risk factors, and a patients age.. Each different type of treatment is associated with an increased risk of specific long-term issues. Therefore, guidelines specifying follow-up for breast cancer survivors is ...
Occupational exposures are suspected of contributing to the risk of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), but results of epidemiologic studies have been inconsistent. The authors prospectively assessed the relation between occupation and ALS mortality among more than 1 million participants in the Cancer Prevention Study II of the American Cancer Society. Follow-up from 1989 through 2002 identified 507 ALS deaths among men and 430 among women. Adjusted rate ratios were calculated by using Mantel-Haenszel weights and Cox proportional hazards. Among men, elevated ALS mortality was found for programmers (rate ratio = 4.55, 95% confidence interval: 1.46, 14.2; p = 0.009) and laboratory technicians (rate ratio = 1.96, 95% confidence interval: 1.04, 3.66; p = 0.04). Occupations previously associated with increased risk of ALS for which no increased risk was found included farmers, electricians, and welders, although the numbers of electricians (eight ALS deaths) and welders (two ALS deaths) were small. ...
Physical activity and other healthy behaviors can hasten recovery from the immediate side effects of cancer treatment, prevent long-term effects, and may reduce the risk of recurrence and increase sur-vival, says a first-ever report by the American Cancer Society (ACS) that tracks the growing population of cancer survivors in the United States. Developed in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute, the report estimates that there are 13.7 million cancer survivors alive in the United States today. The number will grow to almost 18 million by 2022. The 3 most common cancers among male survivors are prostate cancer (43%), colon and rectal cancer (9%), and melanoma skin cancer (7%). The 3 most common cancers among female survivors are breast cancer (41%), uterine cancer (8%), and colon and rectal cancer (8%). Those percentages are expected to stay roughly the same through 2022.. The report also finds that 45% of cancer survivors are 70 years old or older, and only 5% are younger than 40. The ...
Beyond Pesticides, November 13, 2008) The Canadian Cancer Society is holding a conference to look at the possibility of advocating for stricter farm pesticide laws. The Cancer Society has been a vocal advocate for the cosmetic pesticide restrictions that have passed in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec as well as many municipalities, but it has not yet taken a stance on the much larger use of agricultural pesticides. Health Canada, the Canadian entity responsible for pesticide regulation insists, as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency does in the U.S., that registered pesticides do not pose a substantive health risk when used as directed, but mounting scientific evidence shows otherwise. Many of the same chemicals that Canadian provinces have banned for cosmetic use, such as the herbicide 2,4-D, are used in much higher volumes in agriculture than on lawns. Since the Cancer Society is a strong voice in favor of the cosmetic pesticide bans because of the dangers of pesticides, it is logical ...
TUESDAY, Jan. 8, 2019 (HealthDay News) -- Over the past 25 years, the number of Americans who have died from cancer has dropped dramatically, though racial and economic disparities persist, a new study reveals.. Between 1991 and 2016, deaths from cancer dropped 27 percent. In real numbers, thats almost 2.6 million fewer cancer deaths, according to the American Cancer Society.. The decline in deaths is largely driven by reductions in smoking and improved treatment, as well as earlier detection for some cancers, said lead researcher Rebecca Siegel, scientific director of surveillance research at the cancer society.. This is especially true for the most common cancers, including breast, colon, lung and prostate.. But although the racial gap in cancer deaths is slowly narrowing, socioeconomic disparities are growing, she said. Poor counties in particular lag behind, and for some cancers the gap is widening, Siegel noted.. The largest gaps are for the most preventable cancers, she said. For ...
Brother Ross Baron, a faculty member in the religious education department, was diagnosed with stage four Hodgkin and Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in 2003.. The hardest part of treatment was chemotherapy, Baron said. My chemo would be every other week for six months for like seven hours.. Baron underwent surgery proceeding his chemotherapy treatment and then radiation after chemo. Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation are the three most common cancer treatments, according to the American Cancer Society.. I would go in for chemotherapy, and Id come out a different color, Baron said. They always talked about how one day they would find chemo that would go into your body, and it would find cancer cells and just kill cancer cells. Then the side effects would be dramatically less cause it wouldnt be killing you.. Baron hoped that this type of research could be possible.. That would be awesome because those poor people going through chemo - thats a brutal deal, Baron said.. The American Cancer ...

Funding from the National Cancer Institute will help a team of researchers from Wayne State University and the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute to investigate the combined role that community, interpersonal and individual influences have on the health-related quality of life for African American cancer survivors, and how those influences create racial health disparities between African Americans and white survivors.
Historically, black women have been more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer when they were younger than 40 and more likely to die from breast cancer than white women. Black women also are more likely to be diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer. Triple-negative breast cancer has no receptors for the hormones estrogen or progesterone and also has no HER2 receptors. This limits the treatments that can be used. Triple-negative breast cancer is considered more aggressive than hormone-receptor-positive disease. For many years, black women also were less likely overall to be diagnosed with breast cancer than white women. But an October 2015 report from the American Cancer Society found that for the first time, rates of breast cancer among black and white women were about equal. Now another study has found genomic differences in breast cancers in black women compared to breast cancers in white women. The risk of developing colorectal cancer increases with age. All men and women aged 50 and older are at risk for developing colorectal cancer, and should be screened. Some people are at a higher risk and should be screened at an age younger than 50, including those with a personal or family history of inflammatory bowel disease; colorectal cancer or polyps; or ovarian, endometrial or breast cancer.. African Americans and Hispanics are more likely to be diagnosed with colorectal cancer in advanced stages. Incidence rates for colorectal cancer in these groups have been on the rise -colorectal cancer has increased 46 percent among African-American men and 10 percent among African-American women. In most cases, prostate cancer grows slowly. In fact, for some men, the prostate cancer grows so slowly that it never becomes a major problem. However, some types of prostate cancer can grow quickly and spread to other parts of the body. When cancer spreads from its point of origin to other locations, it is termed metastasized cancer. Prostate cancer most commonly metastasizes to the bones, bone marrow, liver, lungs, lymph nodes, and bladder. By far, prostate cancer most frequently metastasizes to the bones. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related death among American men, according to the American Cancer Society. However, prostate cancer related deaths are decreasing, probably because of improved detection methods and treatments. The exact cause of prostate cancer is not always known. Researchers have recently discovered that some types of prostate cancer are linked to changes in DNA. Your DNA is the carrier of your genetic information, including directions for how your ...
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed and third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States for both men and women. The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates about 108,070 new cases of colon cancer and 40,740 new cases of rectal cancer will be diagnosed, and about 49,960 deaths will occur as a result of this devastating disease in 2008. Over the last 20 years, the death rate for this cancer has been dropping as a result of screening and early detection of cancer. In 2007, ACS reported that early-stage colorectal cancer had a survival rate close to 80%, and up to 9,632 deaths could be prevented each year if eligible patients received screening when necessary. However, despite the proven efficacy of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, only about 50% of eligible US patients are currently being screened.. Specific Aims. The central hypothesis of this proposal is that patient-initiated prompting of primary care physicians of the patients interest in screening ...
The fear of having prostate cancer can be devastating to men. However, it is treated most successfully when found early. Consider these statistics from the American Cancer Society (ACS):. • 91 percent of all prostate cancers are discovered while they are either confined to the prostate or near the prostate. The five-year survival rate for men diagnosed with prostate tumors discovered at these stages is 99 percent.. • In the last 20 years, the five-year survival rate for all stages of prostate cancer combined has increased from 67 percent to 99 percent.. • Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men, excluding skin cancer.. • In 2010, 217,730 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S.. • In 2010, 32,050 men will die from prostate cancer in the U.S. alone, making it the second leading cause of cancer death in men.. Colorectal cancer is malignant cells found in the colon or rectum. The colon and the rectum are parts of the large intestine, which is part of the ...
Second to skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in men; approximately 300,000 men in the United States are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year. The exact cause of prostate cancer is unknown. According to the American Cancer Society, an average American man has a one in six chance of being diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime.. Located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum, the prostate is a walnut sized gland that is part of the male reproductive system. The urethra, which is the tube that urine flows through, runs through the center of the prostate gland. The prostate gland produces prostatic fluid which, when mixed with sperm, produces semen.. Prostate cancer occurs when the prostate gland develops malignant cells. Localized prostate cancer is when the cancer remains inside the prostate. However, it is possible for the cancer to grow to surrounding tissue, or spread (metastasize) to the lymph nodes or bone. As with many forms of ...

Addition of the drug Platinol® (cisplatin) to 5-FU (5-flourouracil), mitomycin, and radiation may not improve outcomes for patients with anal cancer. These findings were recently published by the Journal of the American Medical Association.. Anal cancer is a rare form of cancer that develops in the tissues of the anus. Although treatment for anal cancer if often very effective, with most patients experiencing a cure, anal cancer can be a serious condition. The American Cancer Society estimates that 680 people will die of anal cancer in 2008. Current treatment options include surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.. Current standards for treating anal cancer include chemotherapy and radiation. The five-year survival rate, however, following treatment with 5-FU, mitomycin, and radiation is only about 65%. Researchers in the current study sought to determine if the addition to standard therapy of Platinol, an alkylating agents that kills cancer cells by damaging their DNA, could improve outcomes of ...
Prostate Cancer is the most prevalent type of cancer impacting American men. In 2016, approximately 220,000 men in the US will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and over 27,000 will die from the disease. New Jersey has the third highest incidence per capita of prostate cancer in the US. Even worse, in African American men, the incidence is roughly 60% higher than those of white or Asian men.. There is good news however. The 5-year survival rate for men whose prostate cancer is detected early is nearly 100% and 93% of men diagnosed with prostate cancer will live 10 years or more. In 2013, Hollywood star Angelina Jolie announced she had had both breasts surgically removed as a preventative measure after tests revealed she carried the mutation, despite not having been diagnosed with cancer. Lynparza has the broadest clinical development programme of any PARP inhibitor, and AstraZeneca and MSD are working together to deliver Lynparza as quickly as possible to more patients across multiple settings, including breast, ovarian, prostate and pancreatic cancers.. According to the American Cancer Society, women with a mutation in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes have a seven-in-10 chance of getting breast cancer by the age of 80.. For the new study, Eccles and a team recruited 2,733 British women aged 18-40 who had been diagnosed with breast cancer between 2000 and 2008.. About 12 percent of the patients had a BRCA mutation, yet again confirming the association between this faulty gene and breast cancer. In the trial, olaparib significantly prolonged progression-free survival (PFS) ...
Researchers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center recently published their latest findings on the role a diagnosing urologist plays in deciding whether older men with low-risk prostate cancer should receive treatment for their disease, and consequently the type of treatment they receive.. Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in men, with 233,000 new cases being diagnosed every year, according to the American Cancer Society, with similar mortality rates between older patients that opt for surveillance versus treatment.. Whats striking was just how much variation exists in managing prostate cancer, with the diagnosing physician playing as much a role, if not more of a role, than accepted patient factors that impact surveillance use, said Karen Hoffman, M.D., assistant professor in Radiation Oncology and lead author of the study.. The findings, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, aimed to determine why active surveillance, a management program for low-risk disease ...
New research has linked adolescent obesity with up to a four-fold increased risk of pancreatic cancer later in life. The studys results also suggest that overweight and even higher weight within the normal weight range in men may increase pancreatic cancer risk in a graded manner. The findings are published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society.. Pancreatic cancer is the sixth most common cause of cancer-related deaths in the world, and studies have linked adult obesity with an increased risk for its occurrence. To uncover any potential associations with adolescent weight, Zohar Levi, MD, of Rabin Medical Center and Tel Aviv University, and his colleagues analyzed 1,087,358 Israeli Jewish men and 707,212 Jewish women who underwent a compulsory physical examination between the ages of 16 and 19 years from 1967 to 2002. Pancreatic cancer incidence through 2012 was identified by linkage to the Israeli National Cancer Registry.. Over a median of 23.3 years ...
For the 12th year, cancer was the top reason for long-term disability claims, followed closely by back disorders, according to 2012 claims data from insurance provider Unum.. The leading reasons for Unums short-term disability claims were maternity and nonback injuries.. Recovery and return to work play a particularly significant role for cancer patients. Most people who have been diagnosed with cancer are very motivated to get back to work, said Kristin Tugman, senior director of Health and Productivity at Unum. It helps create a sense of normalcy and control at a time when people often feel understandably overwhelmed.. Advances in cancer treatment have led to much higher rates of survival from diagnosis. The American Cancer Society estimates that the number of cancer survivors in the U.S. will grow to nearly 18 million by 2022.. Altogether, the leading causes of long-term disability claims reported by Unum were:. ...

Most cancer organizations agree that women of normal risk who have had no previous breast symptoms or problems should begin getting mammograms every 1-2 years starting at age 40. (In this stance, DBCC joins other organizations including Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute.) Previously, almost all organizations agreed on these guidelines. However, in late 2009, the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) changed their recommendation. Since then the USPSTF and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advise that women ages 40-49 talk to their doctor about when they should begin screening and how often and that women ages 50 and older have screening mammograms every 2 years. The new USPSTF guidelines have been quite controversial and many organizations continue to promote the former recommendation. Many insurance policies cover mammograms beginning at age 40, and as Affordable Care Act states that insurance companies should ...

Penis cancer is thankfully a rare occurrence in industrialized countries. According to the American Cancer Society, about 1,640 new cases are predicted to appear in the U.S. in 2014. However, while this represents only a minute portion of the population, the men who are affected - as well as their families - can be devastated by this potentially deadly disease. Therefore, all men should understand the risk factors, along with being on the lookout for the symptoms, as a proactive way of taking charge of their penis health. Some important questions about penis cancer are answered here.. What does penis cancer look like? Penis cancer occurs when malignant cells develop in the penile tissue. Women at high risk for breast cancer, particularly women younger than 30, should weigh the benefits of screening mammography against the potential risks from low-dose radiation exposure. The American Cancer Society recommends annual screening with mammography and MRI for some high-risk women, typically beginning at age 30.
Smokeless tobacco has several health risks including cancer, and its not a safe substitute for cigarette smoking. There are no safe forms of tobacco. The National Cancer Institute states there are approximately 28 chemicals in smokeless tobacco that can cause cancer. Also, according to the American Cancer Society, people who use smokeless tobacco have a higher chance of developing oral and throat cancer than people who dont use tobacco. Users of smokeless tobacco are also at higher risk for developing pancreatic cancer. Smokeless tobacco can also cause white sores called leukoplakia to develop in the mouth (these may eventually lead to cancer).. Apart from cancer, dipping has several other health consequences. Tobacco contains nicotine, an addictive substance which can cause chemical dependence. Chemical dependence makes it difficult for folks to quit using tobacco even when they are aware of the possible health consequences. Increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, and the levels of ...
