N2 - Although the evolutionary and ecological processes that contribute to plant invasion have been the focus of much research, investigation into the molecular basis of invasion is just beginning. Common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) is an annual weed native to North America and has been introduced to Europe where it has become invasive. Using a custom-designed NimbleGen oligoarray, we examined differences in gene expression between five native and six introduced populations of common ragweed in three different environments (control, light stress and nutrient stress), as well as two different time points. We identified candidate genes that may contribute to ...

Pollen is produced from mid-July until the first frosts in autumn. The main pollen season of Ambrosia is the months of August and September. A full-grown plant will release millions of pollen grains. Depending on wind and weather, these can be blown 200 kilometres or further. Part of the quantity of pollen measured in western Switzerland and Ticino is hence imported from the areas of neighbouring countries contaminated with common ragweed. Just 11 Ambrosia pollen grains/m³ are enough to trigger allergic reactions of the eyes and respiratory tracts. By comparison, 50 grass pollen grains/m³ are required to produce the same symptoms. This is why experts regard Ambrosia pollen as particularly aggressive. It has not yet been conclusively determined how many common ragweed plants can be tolerated so that no allergies occur in sensitised people.. ...
Ambrosia is very closely related to the gods other form of sustenance, nectar. The two terms may not have originally been distinguished;[1] though in Homers poems nectar is the drink and ambrosia the food of the gods; it was with ambrosia Hera cleansed all defilement from her lovely flesh (Iliad xiv.170), and with ambrosia Athena prepared Penelope in her sleep (Odyssey xviii.188ff) so that when she appeared for the final time before her suitors, the effect of the years had been stripped away and they were inflamed at the sight of her. On the other hand, in Alcman, nectar is the food, and in Sappho (fragment 45) and Anaxandrides,[2] ambrosia is the drink. When a character in Aristophanes Knights says, I dreamed the goddess poured ambrosia over your head- out of a ladle, the homely and realistic ladle brings the ineffable moment to ground with a thump. ...
Alicia RossUniversal UclickAccording to Greek mythology, ambrosia was food or drink for the gods. Upon eating or drinking it, they were given eternal youth and life. In the traditional culinary world, ambrosia usually means a fruit salad with a creamy base and lots of marshmallows.Im not sure how the Greeks ambrosia is similar to the salad were familiar with today. The culinary genius who came up with the original recipe probably just meant that it was fit for the gods in taste and texture. And while the sticky, sweet concoction that was on my holiday dinner table appealed to me as a kid, its not as pleasing to my adult palate. Yet ambrosia seems to have its place among holiday fare. This Cranberry Ambrosia recipe is in honor of past ambrosias, but it has a modern, mature flavor. It is perfect to pair with any type of roasted meat or vegetable combination, as it stands completely on its own. The leftovers…

A population of common ragweed from Delaware was not controlled in the field by herbicides that inhibit acetolactate synthase (ALS) or protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO). Research was conducted to ascertain if this population was resistant to these herbicidal modes of action and, if so, to determine the resistance mechanism(s). Resistance was confirmed by dose-response studies on greenhouse-grown plants with multiple ALS- and PPO-inhibiting herbicides. DNA sequence data revealed that resistance to ALS-inhibiting herbicides was due to the previously reported W574L ALS mutation. To assist in determining the mechanism of resistance to PPO-inhibiting herbicides, an F2 population was derived from a cross between the resistant biotype (Del-R) and a sensitive biotype (DV1-S). This population segregated in the ratio of three resistant one sensitive when treated with fomesafen, indicating that resistance to PPO-inhibiting herbicides was conferred by a single, (incompletely) dominant, nuclear gene. ...

An analysis of recent studies and a field survey were conducted to investigate the distribution of the exotic species Ophraella communa LeSage (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) and the results applicability for biological control against ragweed, which disturbs the islands ecosystem. The ragweed beetle (O. communa) can be found anywhere on the host plant Ambrosia artemisiifolia L., which grows in Jeju Island. Moreover, ragweed beetles possess the following characteristics: a high host plant specificity, a high-temperature resistance, an excellent mobility, and multivoltinism. Ragweed is extensively distributed and gradually expands its habitat further on Jeju Island. For this reason, it is recommended to take advantage of O. communa for the biological control of ragweed instead of pesticides or direct removal, considering that Jeju is endowed with many natural reserves and unique insular traits ...
Harvard Forest scientist Kristina Stinson and colleagues from University College, Dublin, Ireland, published a new paper in Ecosphere predicting changes in the genetic composition of common ragweed populations under global change conditions. Common ragweed, or Ambrosia artemisiifolia, produces pollen that is a leading cause of fall hay fever allergies. In experimentally elevated CO2 conditions, this plant can produce 60% more pollen than it does in present day conditions. The researchers tested how projected changes in CO2 levels might preferentially increase the growth and reproduction of certain genotypes over others. They grew twelve genotypes in experimental stands, at either ambient or twice-ambient levels of CO2, and modeled the relative performance of genotypes in the two treatments. One surprising result from the study is that genotypes that remain small in todays environment become large under experimental doubling of CO2, while normally larger plants become suppressed. Smaller plants, ...

Ambrosia artemisiifolia, also known as common ragweed, is an annual herbaceous plant that originates in North America and began to spread in Europe after 1940. Currently, the pace at which Ambrosia is spreading is on the rise with a concomitant rise in allergy.. «Climate change foreseen for the next several decades of the 21st century over the European region will likely increase the spread of invasive plants like Ambrosia» says the project leader, Dr. Michelle Epstein of the Medical University of Vienna, talking about one of the main project findings. Together with Epstein, experts from seven different EU Countries (Austria, France, United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, Italy, and Croatia) are partners in the project.. Three days (June 21, 1993; July 3, 2000; and July 6, 2003) were selected from the 15-year period of 1989 to 2003, for which ragweed pollen was detected, despite the fact that local pollen dispersion had not been started. Ragweed pollen of transported and local origin was separated so that ragweed pollen detected before flowering of local ragweed was considered as of transported origin. Then, backward trajectories belonging to the days of peak concentrations of this period (ie, those trajectories belonging to the 3 days selected) were examined for 3 and 7 days, respectively. For the 3 days selected, archive meteorological database was used and the HYSPLIT model was applied to calculate trajectories of ragweed pollen grains as well as to detect their source regions.. ...

Currently, there are no methods for preventing further infestation of susceptible trees where redbay ambrosia beetle is established. In Florida trees with signs of rapid wilting, dieback, and insect boring in redbay and other host trees should be reported to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Division of Plant Industry or Division of Forestry. To avoid spreading the beetle and pathogen to new areas, redbay and other hosts of redbay ambrosia beetle should not be moved or sold as firewood, tree trimmings, or barbecue smoke-wood. Wood from infested trees should not be transported out of the local area where the infested trees are detected. Dead redbay or other Lauraceous tree species cut in residential areas should be chipped and left onsite as mulch, or disposed of as locally as possible. The pathogen does not survive in the mulched wood chips (Crane et al. 2011). Manuka oil, the essential oil extracted from Leptosperum scoparium and Phoebe oil, an extract of Brazilian ...
The Tijuana River Valley is the first natural habitat in California to be substantially invaded by the Kuroshio Shot Hole Borer (KSHB, Euwallacea sp.), an ambrosia beetle native to Southeast Asia. This paper documents the distribution of the KSHB in the riparian vegetation in the valley and assesses the damage done to the vegetation as of early 2016, approximately six months after the beetle was first observed in the valley. I divided the riparian habitats into 29 survey units so that the vegetation within each unit was relatively homogenous in terms of plant species composition, age and density. From a random point within each unit, I examined approximately 60 individuals of the dominant plant species for evidence of KSHB infestation and evidence of major damage such as limb breakage. In the 22 forested units,I examined the dominant arroyo and black willows (Salix lasiolepis Benth. and S. gooddingii C.R. Ball), and in the seven scrub units, I examined mule fat (Baccharis salicifolia (Ruiz & Pav.) Pers.
In the book, the ambrosia is composed as a trifle, but I served it in individual portions. I also took the liberty of garnishing with pomegranate seeds because I still had a couple of homegrown, tiny pomegranates on hand. I have a dwarf pomegranate shrub which actually produced fruits, albeit very small fruits, this year, and those fruits were packed with delightful seeds. So, to begin making this dessert, fresh pineapple was cut into chunks, and navel oranges and red grapefruits were cut into segments. The fruits were placed in a sieve and allowed to drain. Be sure to save the juice that collects for another use or mix it with a little vodka for a quick cocktail. Next, white chocolate was melted and allowed to cool, and cream was whipped. There was no added sugar as the white chocolate added just enough sweetness to the cream. The whipped cream was whisked into the melted white chocolate in two steps, and then it was time to layer it with the mixed fruits. ...

Purpose: : We reported the roles of IL-33, a Th2 type-inflammation initiating cytokine, in human chronic allergic conjunctivitis (IOVS. 50:4646-52). In this study we further analyzed the pathophysiological roles of IL-33, by ragweed-induced experimental allergic (RW) conjunctivitis models and by papain-induced conjunctivitis using IL-33 knockout (KO) mice. (PNAS. 107:18581-18586) Methods: : RW-conjunctivitis models were made by alum-RW immunization and three times RW eye drops challenge using IL-33 KO mice (BALB/C background). 24 hours after final challenge, histological analysis was carried out to examine late phase reactions. To examine chronic phase effects of IL-33 for Th2 biased inflammation in the eye, papain-soaked soft contact lens (2mm diameter) were applied to IL-33 KO mice (C57/BL6 background) and the eye lids were sutured. 10 days after contact lens installation, histological analysis was carried out. Results: : RW conjunctivitis model showed that significantly reduced eosinophil ...

RWE Innogy has announced plans to build a modern biomass-fired cogeneration plant together with TroiKomm, a subsidiary of the city of Troisdorf. The plant is to supply steam and heat to the industrial municipal park of Troisdorf in Germany. Therefore, RWE Innogy Cogen and TroiKomm have entered into a shareholders agreement to establish a joint project company. RWE will hold a share of 51% in this company, while the city of Troisdorf will have a stake of 49%. The planned investment volume will amount to more than E30 million. RWE said that the next step is to invite tenders for the planning and design of the plant. In parallel, the licensing procedure will be initiated. Construction is scheduled to start in the second half of 2009. The cogeneration plant is planned to have an electrical output of 7.5MW and a thermal output of 18MW. The electricity produced will be fed into the grid. Fritz Vahrenholt, CEO of RWE Innogy, said: RWE plans to significantly step up its co-operation with municipalities ...
Many people only get allergies a certain time of year (they call it seasonal allergic rhinitis-also known as hayfever.) One of the worst things for fall is ragweed. I hate that stuff! One plant can make a million pollen spores in one day, and it can really travel! According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation, ragweed pollen has been found as far as 400 miles out to sea and 2 miles up in the atmosphere! The program is called HALT-MS. There were 24 volunteers and they were between 26 to 52 years old. These periods of remission are interspersed with relapses which will cause patients to suffer chronic pain, weakness, and difficulties speaking.. Dr Shiva Gopal Vasishta was part of the study where the desired outcome was to suppress the active disease and reboot the immune system. The procedure consists of collecting ...
The experimental limited release program is well and truly up and running at Moon Dog now theyve assigned Señor Brewer Adrian McNulty permanently to their smaller original brewery with instructions to go hog wild. And, for his latest bottled release, its fair to say inspiration comes from left field - particularly with cricket season still a way off. Said inspiration is Sir Curtly Ambrose, one of the fiercest pacemen to stalk the planet in the latter days of the West Indies decades of dominance. Indee
Fabletics is getting big. The company, which makes active wear and accessories that it calls, Athleisure, seems to be raking in the dough, and theyve only been around for three years. So, whats their secret? Theyve long had an online catalog where customers can submit orders. But now theyre opening stores, too. The companys vision is for their retail stores and online catalog to work in tandem to drive up sales.. Speaking at the eTail West Conference, an annual event held in Palm Springs, California, the companys president, Gregg Throgmartin explained how the company plans to grow.. A customer can go to a store, try something on, see how it fits, feel whether they like the material and the color, and then put it back on the rack. A few hours or days later, the customer then orders the item online.. Its worked so far, according to Throgmartin. If current patterns hold, theyll rake in $250 million in online sales by the end of the year. He wont say exactly how much money the company has ...

Summer in Denmark means eating lots and lots of koldskål, which is a cold buttermilk soup with vanilla and lemon. There are lots of ready-made variations in the grocery stores, some are better than others so the past few years I have made my own. Its really easy to make and I dont have to worry about which preservatives have been added. And I can also make my own variations. Like this strawberry version which is so much better than the store bought strawberry version. You just cant beat fresh strawberries. I also baked a batch of biscuits called kammerjunker, which what we usually add to the soup. They are small, light and crunchy biscuits with lots of vanilla. I ...

Were not putting anything but data on the iPhone, and were doing it in the right way, and were putting it in the user area of the iPhone. Apple is intentionally making sure that products like ours dont work. That I think is a mistake - its as if in an iPhone OS update, Apple decided that MP3s you got from ripping a CD should no longer play on your iPhone, and you should instead buy them from their store.. ...
Chapter X - The Compilers. The air is filled with mingling aromas. Sweat, colognes, perfumes, and the overpowering smell of marijuana smoke. Ambrosia is making its way around the crowd and people are slotting it in and passing it along. It messes with your brain somehow, all I know is that youre filled with pleasure and happiness for a while, a euphoria. It must use up neurotransmitters, because a second dose doesnt do anything. This makes it non-addictive- a pirates grog that is often shared at events like concerts, amongst friends and not under the purview of the Police.. Theres an opening band playing right now, I havent heard of them before, but theyre not too bad. The Martian Dream, from the Mars Colony I bet. People dont seem super into them, you know, theyre mostly just smoking marijuana or slotting Ambrosia and otherwise just standing around, waiting. I feel sorry for them, but at least people arent throwing things at them and booing- theyre good enough that that isnt ...

This superb meshing of styles begins with Sub Strata from Max Million and Gusk. The rhythm is soft and finely drawn by at once heavy and light percussions. Like in a sort of cosmic and astral down-tempo, the rhythm floats in an oniric structure where crystalline arpeggios, suave ethereal voice filets, morphic guitar notes and synth layers wrapped up in a static mist get enlacing on a rhythm with subtle permutations. Mikteks Light Tails adopts the same cosmic-astral approach with a floating and hopping tempo. The choirs are beautiful. They roam on a misty structure which is slightly stamped by good percussions. Distant Industries from One Arc Degree follows the dreamy ashes of Light Tails with a cosmic and psychedelic down-tempo which spreads its slow rhythm over heavy metallic percussions. The synth draws a melodious approach which floats at big knocks of undulatory arcs, bringing in its melodious trail an uncertain rhythm which appears closer to stars than dance floors and which ...
