He studied at the Bronx High School of Science and then at the University of New York. Dropping out after a year, aged 19, he moved to Santa Cruz, California. After living on a farm for four years he decided to resume his studies in botany and horticulture at the University of California. Initially his interest in botany was focused on trees, working for three years in the arboretum of the University. He graduated in December 1978 and continued his postgraduate study at the University of Florida, after working for two years at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota, Florida, where his interest in Amaryllidaceae was stimulated. His masters thesis, in 1983, was on the taxonomy of the genus Eucharis. He continued with the same subject in his doctoral studies, producing his thesis entitled A Monograph of Eucharis and Caliphruria (Amaryllidaceae) in 1986. He then moved to the University of Floridas Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center where he was a palm and tropical ornamental ...

INTRODUCTION. Chiles position in the international market for cut flowers has had an upward trend over the past 15 yr, but at the end of this period show signs of stagnation (Reyes and Barrera, 2009). However, Chile still has a great level of exportation of cut flowers to Netherland, USA, Japan, Argentina, among others; reaching close to US$4 million annually (Reyes and Barrera, 2009). Nevertheless, still is a weak competitor in relation with the production of traditional flowers. An economic strategy to cope with this problem is to offer species such as Phycella australis (Phil.) Ravenna, a species that is now beginning to be marketed in the Biobío Region, Chile, which due that is an endemic flower would not have any competitors abroad.. The Phycella genus (Amaryllidaceae) is endemic from Chile and Argentina, includes six different species (Arroyo-Leuenberger and Dutilh, 2008) distributed along the central zone of Chile, between Coquimbo and Biobío Regions. Phycella plants are perennial, ...

Beautiful Red Bloom. This unique flower sends its foliage in the spring and has lovely smooth green leaves into summer. those die away, and suddenly, in the late September/early October, seemingly overnight, a flower spike rises from the ground (or from the dead leaves, thus the resurrection part of it all) and gives you a beautiful, showy red flower. These are truly unique and a great gardening conversation piece. They will be shipped freshly dug as a bareroot plant. Perfect for early spring, summer, or early fall planting. Would not advise planting in the winter, of course. Remember, these are a live, bareroot plant. Please order them during a time of year that they can be safely shipped in non-freezing temperatures.. ...
Previous studies have demonstrated that microinjections of the α2-AR agonist guanabenz produce dose-dependent vasodepressor responses (Lim et al., 1985). It has also been shown that the systemic vasodepressor effects of guanabenz could be blocked by local application of the α2-AR antagonist yohimbine into the gigantocelluar reticular formation (Lim et al., 1988), supporting the idea that α2-ARs in the gigantocelluar reticular formation participate in the vasodepressor actions of α2-AR agonists (Chen and Chan, 1980; Lim and Chan, 1986). The present results extend these findings to show that local application of an even more potent antihypertensive agent, clonidine, can produce dose-dependent falls in arterial pressure after the application of volumes and doses (20 nl volume, 750 pmol total dose) that are a fraction of the volumes used in many other studies. These results also show that the vasodepressor and bradycardic responses to clonidine can be completely blocked in a dose-dependent ...

The orientation of the organofibrous structure plays an important role not only in the biomineralization process but also in the extracellular matrix (ECM) of articular cartilage by providing cells with biomechanical cues. Here, it is reported that a long range nanofibrous orientation can be realized by a self-assembling ionic complex between (+)-charged amphiphilic peptide block copolymers with a rigid-flexible block structure (polyalanine-PLX-polyalanine; PA-PLX-PA) and (-)-charged hyaluronic acid (HA). A biomimetic 3D culture system encapsulating chondrocytes is formed by a temperature-sensitive sol-to-gel transition of the PA-PLX-PA/HA complex aqueous solution, which provides a compatible microenvironment for the cells. The cell proliferation and biomarker expression for articular cartilage are significantly improved in the PA-PLX-PA/HA complex system relative to the PA-PLX-PA or the commercially available Matrigel systems. In particular, noticeable cell clustering is observed in the ...
A memory cell is provided with a pair of electrodes, and an active layer sandwiched between the electrodes and including a molecular system and ionic complexes distributed in the molecular system. The active layer having a high-impedance state and a low-impedance state switches from the high-impedance state to the low-impedance state when an amplitude of a writing signal exceeds a writing threshold level, to enable writing information into the memory cell. The active layer switches from the low-impedance state to the high-impedance state when an amplitude of an erasing signal having opposite polarity with respect to the writing signal exceeds an erasing threshold level, to enable erasing information from the memory cell.

A good horticulture therapy exercise is the forcing of narcissus bulbs...as they awaken more than one sense! Narcissus are great because they do not require advance chilling to get the bulbs to bloom indoors. This is an activity that uses gross motor movements, has a low cost, low maintenance, and quick results. I picked up 2 boxes of paperwhite narcissus that were on the clearance table at Lowes(pictured below) and proceeded to awake the magic that is locked up inside by following the instructions written on the outside of the box ...
- Grand Primo is considered one of the oldest and best selections of narcissus. It flowers early to mid-season and is adapted to mild winters like those in zones 8 and 9. It has a most pleasing fragrance.

Background and Aims. Although there is evidence that both allopolyploid and homoploid hybridization lead to rapid genomic changes, much less is known about hybrids from parents with different basic numbers without further chromosome doubling. Two natural hybrids, Narcissus × alentejanus (2n = 19) and N. × perezlarae (2n = 29), originated by one progenitor (N. cavanillesii, 2n = 28) and two others (N. serotinus, 2n = 10 and N. miniatus, 2n = 30, respectively) allow us to study how DNA content and composition varies in such hybrids.. Methods. Flow cytometry measurements with two staining techniques, PI and DAPI, were used to estimate 2C values and base composition (AT/GC ratio) in 390 samples from 54 wild populations of the two natural hybrids and their parental species. In addition, 20 synthetic F1 hybrid individuals were also studied for comparison.. Key Results. Natural hybrids presented 2C values intermediate between those found in their parental species, although intra-population variance ...
Although Galanthus nivalis L. (snowdrop) is known for the galanthamine content, used in the treatment of Alzheimer disease, the polyphenolic compounds of Amaryllidaceae species are less studied. Proper understanding of the polyphenolics in these extracts and of their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties may allow a reconsideration of their medicinal uses. The polyphenolic content of four selected Amaryllidaceae species harvested from Romania (Galanthus nivalis L., Narcissus pseudonarcissus L., N. poeticus L. and Leucojum vernum L.) was determined by spectrophotometric methods; the identification of phenolic compounds was performed by a HPLC-MS method, in order to establish their polyphenolic fingerprints. For the evaluation of the antioxidant potential the following methods were employed: DPPH radical scavenging, FRAP, hemoglobin ascorbate peroxidase activity inhibition (HAPX), inhibition of lipid peroxidation catalyzed by cytochrome c, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy assays.

Botanically described as Crinum loddigesianum by William Herbert in 1837: 15. Loddigesianum. […] Ex Mexico. Tube 8 inches, limb tipped with dark purple and striped with the same on the outside. Imported from Mexico by Mr. Loddiges. [Amaryllidaceae p.253/1837]. Herbert goes on to write: This plant has flowered late this winter, with a six-flowered scape, the bulb having grown to twice the bulk it had last year. Its nearest affinity is evidently to C. cruentum, and it should be removed from the place assigned to it, and stand No. 12, between cruentum and 13. erubescens. Its spathe this year was cleft, not tubed, as before. [Amaryllidaceae p.401/1837]. For historical details also see also Crinum erubescens L.f ex Aiton. I have found no illustration of Crinum loddigesianum. The figure used here is of Crinum cruentum from the Botanical Cabinet [LBC no.461/1819]. Conrad Loddiges did not include the plant described by Herbert as Crinum loddigesianum in his Botanical Cabinet.. ...

Although it was once incorrectly grouped into the liliaceae family, it is now understood that the allium flower is a genus in the amaryllidaceae - or onion - clan. This genus is estimated to consist of roughly 860 species which mostly grow in milder regions of the Northern Hemisphere. These plants, which are herbaceous perennials, can grow in either clustered or solitary blossoms from bulbs. Most plants produce between one and twelve leaves that may be flat, linear or basal blades - some of which will wither away either before or during the flowers blooming period. The flower heads are made up of tepals which may either be pendent or erect. They have a single pistil and up to six stamens, and come in white, yellow, blue and purple hues.. Although many species of the allium flower have a distinctive onion or garlic scent, many others are thought to have a delicate floral aroma, and so they are often used in perfumes and cosmetics. But their uses do not stop there. The ancient Indians of Peru ...

Saditev in cvetenje Amaryllis Amaryllis razmnoževanje in oskrba doma. Amaryllis (lat. Amaryllis) je najpogostejši rod družine Amaryllis (lat. Amaryllidaceae). Linney ...

Removal of endothelial cells on rings of rat aorta increased the sensitivity to the selective alpha-1 adrenoceptor agonist phenylephrine, to the nonselective alpha adrenoceptor agonist norepinephrine and to the selective alpha-2 adrenoceptor agonist clonidine. In the case of the first two, which are strong agonists for the alpha-1 adrenoceptor-mediating contraction, removal of endothelium increased sensitivity 4- and 6-fold at the EC30 level, but produced little or no increase in maximum. In the case of clonidine, a partial agonist for the alpha-1 adrenoceptor, which gave only about 15% of the maximum given by phenylephrine on endothelium-containing rings, removal of the endothelium not only shifted the curve to the left but also increased the maximum to about 50% of that given by phenylephrine. The depression of sensitivity to these agonists in rings with endothelium appeared to be due to the vasodepressor action of endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF), as hemoglobin, a specific blocking ...

Defective apoptosis contributes to the development of various human malignancies. The kinases nuclear Dbf2-related 1 (NDR1) and NDR2 mediate apoptosis downstream of the tumor suppressor proteins RASSF1A (Ras association domain family member 1A) and MST1 (mammalian Ste20-like kinase 1). To further analyze the role of NDR1 in apoptosis, we generated NDR1-deficient mice. Although NDR1 is activated by both intrinsic and extrinsic proapoptotic stimuli, which indicates a role for NDR1 in regulating apoptosis, NDR1-deficient T cells underwent apoptosis in a manner similar to that of wild-type cells in response to different proapoptotic stimuli. Analysis of the abundances of NDR1 and NDR2 proteins revealed that loss of NDR1 was functionally compensated for by an increase in the abundance of NDR2 protein. Despite this compensation, NDR1−/− and NDR1+/− mice were more prone to the development of T cell lymphomas than were wild-type mice. Tumor development in mice and humans was accompanied by a ...

Cy3 can be used to visualize the binding pattern of Narcissus pseudonarcissus Lectin (NPL/NPA) in cellular imaging and flow cytometry. Cy3 is more photostable than many other fluorophores and can be seen with TRITC filter sets. It is commonly combined with green-fluorescent dyes for dual-labeling.
In a corporate environment, a bug-tracking system may be used to generate reports on the productivity of programmers at fixing bugs. However, this may sometimes yield inaccurate results because different bugs may have different levels of severity and complexity. The severity of a bug may not be directly related to the complexity of fixing the bug. There may be different opinions among the managers and architects. A local bug tracker (LBT) is usually a computer program used by a team of application support professionals to keep track of issues communicated to software developers. Using an LBT allows support professionals to track bugs in their own language and not the language of the developers. In addition, LBT use allows a team of support professionals to track specific information about users who have called to complain that may not always be needed in the actual development queue (thus, there are two tracking systems when an LBT is in place.) ...
