The Amaryllidaceae … 1: 134. DOI: 10.1111/j.1095-8339.2009.00999.x Reference page. English Articles. Amaryllidaceae species are considered more advanced in evolution than the lilies. August Eichler (1886)[43] was the first phyletic taxonomist and positioned the Amaryllidaceae and Liliaceae within the Liliiflorae,[44][45] one of the seven orders of monocotyledons. Golfball Large Cup HOT. The Amaryllidaceae were treated similarly in the German-language literature to the manner they had been in English. Order: Asparagales. [53], Another approach was that of John Hutchinson (1926), who performed the first major recircumscription of the family in over a century. Lower (Mya). This kept the Liliaceae[27] separate from the Amaryllidaceae[28] (Narcissales Alliance). He treated Amaryllidaceae as bulbous plants with umbellate inflorescences, the latter characteristic being the defining feature: an umbellate inflorescence subtended by an involucre of one or more spathaceous bracts. Pancratistatin has been selected for pre-clinical development but is sparingly soluble in water. A disodium phosphate derivative has been synthesized which is water soluble and is bioequivalent thereof. The critical step in the synthesis of the phenolic phosphate was phosphorylation of 1,2,3,4-tetraacetoxy-pancratistatin with dibenzyloxy(N,N-diisopropylamido)phosphine. This pancratistatin prodrug has the structure set forth below: ##STR1##
Alkaloids pancratistatin and narciclasine, isolated from Amaryllidaceae, have been shown to present antitumor activity on preclinical models, including melanoma. Despite extensive investigations, pancratistatin or narciclasine analogues did not succeed to provide sufficient therapeutic benefit, [1] mostly hampered by poor water solubility and systemic toxicity [1]. To overcome those limitations, we developed a chemistry program aimed at improving both their physicochemical and pharmacological properties. A literature survey suggests that any structural modification of this highly oxigenated isocarbostiryl specific scaffold would lead to a loss of activity except on position 1, difficult to achieve but interesting to explore.. A series of 40 novel 1-aminopancratistatin derivatives was synthesised starting from large quantities of narciclasine extracted from Narcissus bulbs. These novel compounds exhibit an improved pharmaceutical profile facing standard solubility, plasmatic and microsomal ...

The phenanthridine alkaloid lycobetaine is a minor constituent of Amaryllidaceae. Inhibition of cell growth was studied in the clonogenic assay on 21 human tumour xenografts (mean IC50 = 0.8 μM). The growth of human leukaemia cell lines was also potently inhibited (mean IC50 = 1.3 μM). Athymic nude mice, carrying s.c. implanted human gastric tumour xenograft GXF251, were treated i.p. with lycobetaine for 4 weeks, resulting in a marked tumour growth delay. Lycobetaine was found to act as a specific topoisomerase IIβ poison. In the presence of calf thymus DNA, pure recombinant human topoisomerase IIβ protein was selectively depleted from SDS-gels, whereas no depletion of topoisomerase IIα protein was observed. In A431 cells immunoband-depletion of topoisomerase IIβ was induced, suggesting stabilization of the covalent catalytic DNA-intermediate in living cells. It is reasonable to assume that this mechanism will cause or at least contribute significantly to the antitumour activity. © 2001 Cancer

One of the biggest hurdles in the fight against cancer is the non‐selective nature of most current treatments. On the other hand, opioids‐refractive cancer pain is a most important unsolved problem. Consequently, the search and development of new drugs that are tumor‐killing (while non‐cytotoxic to normal cells) and/or potent analgesics are major goals in cancer research. In this context, pancratistatin and tetrodotoxin, the most prominent representatives of two different families of natural products, have been identified as highly promising leads for cancer treatment and cancer pain, respectively; in fact, they are currently at the focus of some initiatives for pharmaceutical development.. Interest in pancratistatin stems from its high level of in vitro and in vivo cell growth inhibitory activity on a wide variety of human cancer cell lines, but particularly from its mode of action that, while yet unknown, is very selective: pancratistatin does not affect normal cells in clear contrast ...
Which family the genus belongs to has been a matter of debate since its creation. In the Cronquist system, the genus was placed in a very broadly defined family Liliaceae, along with other lilioid monocots. In 1985, Dahlgren, Clifford, and Yeo placed Agapanthus in Alliaceae, close to Tulbaghia.[9] Their version of Alliaceae also included several genera that would later be transferred to Themidaceae. In 1996, following a phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences of the gene rbcL, Themidaceae was resurrected and Agapanthus was removed from Alliaceae.[10] The authors found Agapanthus to be sister to Amaryllidaceae and transferred it to that family. This was not accepted by the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group when they published the original APG system in 1998, because the clade consisting of Agapanthus and Amaryllidaceae had only 63% bootstrap support. The APG system recognized three separate families, Agapanthaceae, Alliaceae sensu stricto, and Amaryllidaceae sensu stricto. Agapanthaceae consisted of ...

Background: During evolution, plants and other organisms have developed a diversity of chemical defences, leading to the evolution of various groups of specialized metabolites selected for their endogenous biological function. A correlation between phylogeny and biosynthetic pathways could offer a predictive approach enabling more efficient selection of plants for the development of traditional medicine and lead discovery. However, this relationship has rarely been rigorously tested and the potential predictive power is consequently unknown ...

RESULTS. The analyzed parameters are summarized in Table II. Mitotic metaphases and diploid karyotypes of the species are shown in Figures 1 and 2, respectively.. All seven accessions analyzed showed a common karyotype constitutedby eight chromosome pairs of different sizes and the common karyotype formula was 4m + 10sm + 2st. In most of the taxa, the longest pair corresponded to the first metacentric pair and the shortest pair was the sixth pair (submetacentric) (Table II). The shortest chromosomes were observed in P. aff. davidii and P. lutea, while the longest chromosomes were found in P. amoena. Chromosomes of P. amoena were 30% longer than chromosomes of P. aff. davidii.. For TCL, ANOVA discriminated among taxa (F= 18.22 5, P , 0.001). Considering the CL of each chromosomal pair, all the chromosomal pairs were different among taxa (Table II). In all the assessments, with exception of the seventh and eighth chromosome pairs, P. amoena was different from each other species. In general, the ...
Two low-molecular-weight fractions of sodium hyaluronate (Na-HA), denominated Hyalastin® and Hyalectin®, were investigated as potential adjuvants for ophthalmic vehicles containing pilocarpine nitrate (PiN). Tests were also performed on an ionic complex (HA/PiB) prepared from hyaluronic acid (derived from Hyalastin®) and pilocarpine base. The performance of the vehicles under study was verified by miosis and ocular retention tests carried out on albino rabbits, against a series of reference vehicles, three of which contained a high-molecular-weight fraction of Na-HA (Healon®). The group of 14 reference and test preparations exhibited Newtonian or pseudoplastic flow characteristics and encompassed a wide range of apparent viscosities (1 to 1054 mPa s). The results indicate that the HA/PiB salt and the high-MW Na-HA can significantly increase the bioavailability of pilocarpine with respect to reference vehicles of comparable viscosity: an effect that can be reasonably attributed to ...

In the crop rotation beds the Solanaceae and Cucurbitaceae plants (potatoes and courgettes) have gone. They have been replaced by next years crop of Amaryllidaceae and Fabaceae plants (garlic, onions, peas and beans).. We have planted garlic Picardy Wight. Other good varieties we have grown here at the Garden include Vallelado and Early Purple Wight. We have also planted broad beans Super Aquadulce. Many visitors argue its not worth bothering with autumn sown broad beans. I disagree, it is worth it if only to have something planted in the soil. It can provide winter protection to the soil. It is also a nitrogen fixing plant and useful in crop rotations and managing soil fertility.. ...

INTRODUCTION. Chiles position in the international market for cut flowers has had an upward trend over the past 15 yr, but at the end of this period show signs of stagnation (Reyes and Barrera, 2009). However, Chile still has a great level of exportation of cut flowers to Netherland, USA, Japan, Argentina, among others; reaching close to US$4 million annually (Reyes and Barrera, 2009). Nevertheless, still is a weak competitor in relation with the production of traditional flowers. An economic strategy to cope with this problem is to offer species such as Phycella australis (Phil.) Ravenna, a species that is now beginning to be marketed in the Biobío Region, Chile, which due that is an endemic flower would not have any competitors abroad.. The Phycella genus (Amaryllidaceae) is endemic from Chile and Argentina, includes six different species (Arroyo-Leuenberger and Dutilh, 2008) distributed along the central zone of Chile, between Coquimbo and Biobío Regions. Phycella plants are perennial, ...

Beautiful Red Bloom. This unique flower sends its foliage in the spring and has lovely smooth green leaves into summer. those die away, and suddenly, in the late September/early October, seemingly overnight, a flower spike rises from the ground (or from the dead leaves, thus the resurrection part of it all) and gives you a beautiful, showy red flower. These are truly unique and a great gardening conversation piece. They will be shipped freshly dug as a bareroot plant. Perfect for early spring, summer, or early fall planting. Would not advise planting in the winter, of course. Remember, these are a live, bareroot plant. Previous studies have demonstrated that microinjections of the α2-AR agonist guanabenz produce dose-dependent vasodepressor responses (Lim et al., 1985). It has also been shown that the systemic vasodepressor effects of guanabenz could be blocked by local application of the α2-AR antagonist yohimbine into the gigantocelluar reticular formation (Lim et al., 1988), supporting the idea that α2-ARs in the gigantocelluar reticular formation participate in the vasodepressor actions of α2-AR agonists (Chen and Chan, 1980; Lim and Chan, 1986). The present results extend these findings to show that local application of an even more potent antihypertensive agent, clonidine, can produce dose-dependent falls in arterial pressure after the application of volumes and doses (20 nl volume, 750 pmol total dose) that are a fraction of the volumes used in many other studies. These results also show that the vasodepressor and bradycardic responses to clonidine can be completely blocked in a dose-dependent ...

The orientation of the organofibrous structure plays an important role not only in the biomineralization process but also in the extracellular matrix (ECM) of articular cartilage by providing cells with biomechanical cues. Here, it is reported that a long range nanofibrous orientation can be realized by a self-assembling ionic complex between (+)-charged amphiphilic peptide block copolymers with a rigid-flexible block structure (polyalanine-PLX-polyalanine; PA-PLX-PA) and (-)-charged hyaluronic acid (HA). A biomimetic 3D culture system encapsulating chondrocytes is formed by a temperature-sensitive sol-to-gel transition of the PA-PLX-PA/HA complex aqueous solution, which provides a compatible microenvironment for the cells. The cell proliferation and biomarker expression for articular cartilage are significantly improved in the PA-PLX-PA/HA complex system relative to the PA-PLX-PA or the commercially available Matrigel systems. In particular, noticeable cell clustering is observed in the ...
A memory cell is provided with a pair of electrodes, and an active layer sandwiched between the electrodes and including a molecular system and ionic complexes distributed in the molecular system. The active layer having a high-impedance state and a low-impedance state switches from the high-impedance state to the low-impedance state when an amplitude of a writing signal exceeds a writing threshold level, to enable writing information into the memory cell. The active layer switches from the low-impedance state to the high-impedance state when an amplitude of an erasing signal having opposite polarity with respect to the writing signal exceeds an erasing threshold level, to enable erasing information from the memory cell.

A good horticulture therapy exercise is the forcing of narcissus bulbs...as they awaken more than one sense!
