Alnus glutinosa, Fraxinus excelsior and Papaver rhoeas have long been used in folkloric medicine for the treatment of various ailments. As part of our continuing screening of plant extracts for activities, the extracts of A. glutinosa, F. excelsior and P. rhoeas have been screened for their antioxidant and antibacterial activities, as well as their general toxicity towards brine shrimps. Among the extracts, the methanol (MeOH) extract of F. excelsior displayed the highest level of antioxidant activity (RC50=1.35x10-2 mg/mL) and the dichloromethane (DCM) extract of P. rhoeas was the most toxic extract towards brine shrimps (LD50=2.4x10-2 mg/mL). The n-hexane and DCM extracts of F. excelsior and the MeOH extract of A. glutinosa were active (MIC values were within 1.25x10-1 and 1.00 mg/mL) against all 8 bacterial species tested, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

The symbiosis between the nitrogen fixing acinobacterium Frankia and its actinorhizal host plant is very old and their co-evolution has shaped their niche in the environment. Nitrogen is most often the limiting element in soil, and symbiotic plants can, with the help of their micrsymbionts, compete in an efficient way. Actinorhizal plants are found all over the world and the nitrogen fixing capability of Frankia contributes greatly to the global nitrogen cycle as well as to the microclimate around these particular plants. The symbiosis between the two is carried out in a modified lateral root known as a nodule, where the bacteria are hosted by the plant. The nodule is a specialized organ in which Frankia is provided with energy in exchange for fixed nitrogen. In this thesis the focus has been to examine the two actinorhizal plants Alnus glutinosa and Datisca glomerata and their two different Frankia symbionts, Frankia alni ACN14a and F. datiscae Dg1.. In order to compare the symbiosis of D. ...

Red alder (Alnus rubra Bong.) is well recognized as an effective host plant for the symbiotic fixation of N. While this fixation process leads to the rapid accumulation of N within the ecosystem, it also enhances nutrient accumulation in biomass and soil organic matter and increases nitrification and cation leaching. We hypothesized that changes in soil properties resulting from these processes would decrease site productivity for second rotation red alder. Adjacent stands of 55 yr old alder and Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco) were studied at the Thompson Research Center on the Cedar River Watershed in western Washington, USA. The presence of red alder oaused the following soil changes: decreased soil solution pH, increased CEC, increased exchangeable acidity accompanied by a decreased soil pH and base saturation. This decreased soil and soil solution pH resulted in increased A1 concentration in the soil solution and on exchange sites as well as decreased P availability. To

The abundance and population dynamics of Scaphoideus titanus, the natural vector of the quarantine grapevine yellow phytoplasma, Flavescence doree, (FD) were evaluated with yellow sticky traps on abandoned grapevine of 1.5 ha in the Northern part of Bucharest city (Southern Romania) during 2009-2011. The results revealed that the vector has developed permanent and increased populations every year. The nymphs were recorded from June to July in the year 2009, until August in 2010 and even up to September in 2011.The activity of adults started at the end of June in the year 2009 and at the beginning of July in the years 2010 and 2011. The adults flight usually lasted until the middle of October. The present data can be of great help in developing precise control measures against S. titanus. They are the first reported on the population dynamics of Flavescence doree vector in Romania, and the first time when a case of an abandoned vine infested by this vector has been detected.. Figure 14. Young plants of red alder ( Alnus rubra ). Alder is a N-fixing plant that forms a symbiotic association with bacteria (more specifically an actinomycete) of the genus Frankia . There are about 21 genera of non-legumes that fix N. These plants are collectively called actinorhizal plants and are important contributors of N in ecosystems where fixed N is scarce. In this figure, all plants are the same age and are growing in sand. The plants on the left were inoculated with Frankia . The plants on the right were not inoculated and are displaying signs of extreme N deficiency. For more on the ecology of nitrogen fixation by alder go to the ecology section of this site. ...
A modelling system is described that indicates the extent to which day-to-day variations in nitrogenase activity in young Alnus incana (L.) Moench, grown in defined conditions in the field, may be affected by weather conditions both during and prior to the day of measurement. Nitrogenase activity (acetylene reduction activity, ARA) was measured weekly on intact field-grown grey alder (A. incana) plants, 0.15-0.42 m tall at planting, nodulated with Frankia. The measurements were done at noon on two groups of plants in 1987 and on two other groups in 1988. Each group was made up of five or six plants. Seven weather variables: daily sunshine hours, daily mean, maximum and minimum air temperature, daily mean and 1300 h relative humidity, and daily rainfall were used. The relation between log(ARA/leaf area) and the weather variables were analysed using a PLS model (partial least squares projection to latent structures). The advantage of PLS is that it can handle x-variables that are correlated. Data ...

Model selection approaches in phylogeography have allowed researchers to evaluate the support for competing demographic histories, which provides a mode of inference and a measure of uncertainty in understanding climatic and spatial influences on intraspecific diversity. Here, to rank all models in the comparison set, and determine what proportion of the total support the top-ranked model garners, we conduct model selection using two analytical approaches -allele frequency-based, implemented in fastsimcoal2, and gene tree-based, implemented in PHRAPL. We then expand this model-selection framework by including an assessment of absolute fit of the models to the data. For this, we utilize DNA isolated from existing natural history collections that span the distribution of red alder (Alnus rubra) in the Pacific Northwest of North America to generate genomic data for the evaluation of 13 demographic scenarios. The quality of DNA recovered from herbarium specimen leaf tissue was assessed for its ...

Lactarius lignyotus. [ Agaricomycetes > Russulales > Russulaceae > Lactarius . . . ]. by Michael Kuo. This dark brown, velvety Lactarius grows under conifers in eastern North America and features fairly well-spaced gills, a long stem that is nearly as dark as the cap, and white milk that usually stains the flesh and the gills pinkish. Under the microscope, Lactarius lignyotus has spiny spores that are partially reticulate, and a striking epithelium-like pileipellis.. Elias Fries first described Lactarius lignyotus from Sweden in 1855, and the European concept of the species has remained fairly stable for over 150 years--perhaps because the European versions of Lactarius lignyotus do not demonstrate the substantial variability in features manifested in North American versions (the contemporary European account of Lactarius lignyotus can be found in Heilmann-Clausen and collaborators, 1998).. In North America, however, we have a big mess on our hands when it comes to lignyotus-like mushrooms, and ...

I most often walk to the Center from home - its about two and half miles each way - and I make a habit of touching all the trees along my route. This winter I became particularly interested in the sycamores - they have such a distinctive bark, with big irregular patches peeled away and the green underlayers exposed. It turns out that sycamores bark is much stiffer than other trees, and instead of folding and creasing as it grows, it simply sloughs off and falls away. I havent yet found any reference to medicinal uses of sycamore per se, but in reading about sycamore trees I came across this perfectly sublime sentence (on Wikipedia, of all places): The bark of all trees has to yield to a growing trunk by stretching, splitting, or infilling; the sycamore shows the process more openly than many other trees. When I read that, I thought - well now, theres a flower whose essence we need! It makes me think of people who are having trouble reconciling their changing inner lives with their past ...
Recent research from North Carolina has suggested that there are times where tankmixing an insecticide with your nitrogen can be cheaper than using scouting and thresholds for cereal leaf beetle. The biggest reason for this is because there is a yield penalty for driving over wheat after jointing and because scouting costs money. However, there are a number of reasons why I do not recommend this for 2014.

A couple of Alder galls now. The first is made by the moth caterpillar Heliozela resplendella. It makes a leaf mine up the midrib and then makes a branch mine along a side vein - this is yellow-looking in the picture. After going along the side vein for a bit it makes a mine perpendicular to this until it reaches another side vein and then mines back to the midrib. These bits are also yellow in the picture. It then makes a blotch mine, which is the brown area to the left of the midrib near the top. Finally it cuts out an oval piece from the blotch which falls to the ground and is attached to other leaf litter by the caterpillar, which then pupates inside the detached oval piece of blotch mine. The caterpillar counts as a galler because it causes the midrib and veins to swell while its mining them.. The second Alder gall is caused by the fungus Taphrina tosquinetii, which can swell the leaf up to twice its normal size. The picture shows an early stage with just one section of the leaf swollen. ...

Alder has always lived in his cozy little house in Southern California. Agromyza alnivora is a rarely-recorded fly with a wide distribution range, and I have only found it twice. Alder is a very common tree, so there must be some reason for its scarcity. I notice that the mine is very long and tortuous, starting near centre-right and wandering roughly clockwise twice before descending down the right-hand side to the crescent-shaped exit point (bottom centre). This is a very much longer mine than I would expect to see from a miner of this size, so I can only assume that it is a very inefficient feeder (Alder is clearly a very nutritious plant, given the number of species that feed on it). This, in turn, will increase opportunities for competing organisms to dominate and for parasites/predators to attack. If I had to hazard a guess, I would say that this is a species that is relatively new, or is on the way out ...

Prior to this inspection concerns were raised with us that standards of quality and safety were not being met in the theatre department. We undertook a focused inspection in this area and across a number of wards within the surgical division. We did not include all areas of the Trust as part of this responsive review. We found that all patients admitted to the Trust had their individual needs assessed on admission. We talked to patients, families and staff and found overall care was patient centred and their individual preferences and choices were taken into account in delivering the care provided. We found the ward areas to be clean, tidy and well maintained. Some comments were from patients and their families included. I cant fault it, the nurses are amazing. Nothing is too much trouble, they are really. approachable. Ive asked them the same thing lots of times and they are so patient. They explain everything to me. They have made a bad experience good.
