Understanding brain energy metabolism-neuroenergetics-is becoming increasingly important as it can be identified repeatedly as the source of neurological perturbations. Within the scientific community we are seeing a shift in paradigms from the traditional neurocentric view to that of a more dynamic, integrated one where astrocytes are no longer considered as being just supportive, and activated microglia have a profound influence. Lactate is emerging as the good guy, contrasting its classical bad guy position in the now superseded medical literature. This review begins with the evolution of the concept of lactate shuttles; goes on to the recent shift in ideas regarding normal neuroenergetics (homeostasis)-specifically, the astrocyte-neuron lactate shuttle; and progresses to covering the metabolic implications whereby homeostasis is lost-a state of allostasis, and the function of microglia. The role of lactate, as a substrate and shuttle, is reviewed in light of allostatic stress, and ...

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined age differences in the association between daily stressors and allostatic load.. METHOD: Participants consisted of 317 adults (34-84 years) who participated in Waves 1 (1996-1997) and 2 (between 2005 and 2009) of the Midlife Development in the United States Survey. During Wave 1, participants reported the stressors they encountered across eight consecutive days. Within-person affective reactivity slopes indexing change in negative affect from a nonstressor day to a stressor day were calculated for each participant. Affective reactivity and stressor exposure scores at Wave 1 were used to predict allostatic load at Wave 2.. RESULTS: Heightened levels of affective reactivity at Wave 1 predicted elevated levels of allostatic load at Wave 2 but only among older adults who also reported high levels of stressor exposure. No significant associations emerged for younger adults.. DISCUSSION: Daily stress processes may be one pathway through which age-related physical ...
The brain interprets experiences and translates them into behavioral and physiological responses. Stressful events are those which are threatening or, at the very least, unexpected and surprising, and the physiological and behavioral responses are intended to promote adaptation via a process called allostasis. Chemical mediators of allostasis include cortisol and adrenalin from the adrenal glands, other hormones, and neurotransmitters, the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems, and cytokines and chemokines from the immune system. Two brain structures, the amygdala and hippocampus, play key roles in interpreting what is stressful and determining appropriate responses. The hippocampus, a key structure for memories of events and contexts, expresses receptors that enable it to respond to glucocorticoid hormones in the blood, it undergoes atrophy in a number of psychiatric disorders; it also responds to stressors with changes in excitability, decreased dendritic branching, and reduction ...
Title: 30 Years Lost in Anesthesia Theory. VOLUME: 10 ISSUE: 1. Author(s):Lewis S. Coleman. Affiliation:Barnes Dental Surgery Center,2626 S. Mooney Blvd. Suite C, Visalia, CA. 93277, USA.. Keywords:Allostasis, analgesia, anesthesia theory, apoptosis, atherosclerosis, coagulation, colloid, crystalloid, Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation, eclampsia, Hans Selye, hemodynamic physiology, nitric oxide, stress mechanism, stress repair mechanism, surgical stress syndrome, tissue repair. Abstract: The recent discovery of the Stress Repair Mechanism (SRM) enables the Unified Theory of Medicine postulated by Hans Selye. It confers cohesive theories of anesthesia, analgesia, and allostasis that enable the alteration of anesthetic technique to optimize surgical outcome. The SRM continuously maintains and repairs the vertebrate body in accord with stressful forces and stimuli. Three synergistic pathways activate the SRM: the spinal pathway, the cognitive pathway, and the tissue pathway. Emotional ...
This girl. My great friend. She would be in her thirties wherever she may be today. Dont get me wrong, not all is lost. I have her in spirit. And she. She has me. Our paths diverged, converged, and diverged again. But that only makes room for a natural confluence in times to come. Until then, I will remember. Every day I must remember. How we braided one anothers hair. Mine was dark. Hers was fair. Softly tucked into one anothers love and friendship. Spinning in ascending spirals of synchronicity. We both had hard lives. Spare moments, like tires, we reserved for felicity otherwise contraindicated. Our belief systems ran through us, like a syndicate. We talked serious about light things like cloud formations, on an otherwise sunny day. We fried our eggs runnyside down, on an otherwise sunnyside up ticket. We had this magic of making light of what was always considered heavy serious, and vice versa. The kind of deep shallow friendship most everyones always looking for. She made me laugh and ...

Self-identification as being overweight may be associated with adverse health outcomes, yet prospective evidence examining this possibility is lacking. Over 7-years, we examined associations between perceived overweight and subsequent health in a sample of 3,582 US adults. Perceived overweight predicted longitudinal declines in subjective health (d =.22, p ,.001), increases in depressive symptoms (d =.09, p , .05), and raised levels of physiological dysregulation (d =.24, p ,.001) as gauged by clinical indicators of cardiovascular, inflammatory and metabolic functioning. These associations remained after controlling for a range of potential confounders and were observed irrespective of whether self-perceptions of overweight were accurate or inaccurate. The present research highlights the possibility that self-identification as overweight may act independently of body mass index to contribute to unhealthy profiles of physiological functioning and impaired health over time. These findings ...

Fortunately, there are natural biological processes that facilitate our recovery from stress. A process called allostasis attempts to get all of the physiological systems back to their steady state after the stress response.
Growing up with a deficiency of vitamin D can lead to growth deficiency and malformed bones, a disease called rickets. The fact that this disease would be avoided by a healthy diet does not make it less of a disease. Growing up with an addicted mother, leading to a deficient endorphin release and its resulting dopamine deficit, often leads to a disease called addiction. Whether it is derived from vitamin D or a biologically required attachment, a deficiency of a biological substrate leads to a disease state. Our bodys physiologic and behavioral attempts at achieving allostasis, normalcy, can lead to other symptoms and syndromes. These are usually called diseases.. I see with increasing frequency books, blogs and partisans saying in bold print or loud voices that addiction is not a disease! Passion dramatizes these declarations with a fervor seen in political debates. These pronouncements of the non-disease status of addiction seek to set the record straight. They imply that those who call ...

Riassunto: In the animal nervous system, a very high metabolic turnover, fragile but steep ionic gradients, and morphological and structural constraints - dictated by the necessity for prompt neuronal transmission of electrical impulses and necessary plasticity - result in a highly fragile organ system. Here, we address a small sampling of major constituents of neural function at the cellular and molecular level that play important roles in development and aging, two endogenous processes that embody features of allostasis or the dynamic shifts in set points for specific homeostatic mechanisms associated with development and aging. These chapters stress the dynamic features of neuronal responses to internal (developmental) cues or the more harmful external events (injury and disease) in a modern perspective.. Ageing is a process of decline in physiological function and capability over time. It is an anticipated major burden on societal health-care costs due to an increasingly aged global population. Accelerated biological ageing is a feature of age-related morbidities, which also appear to share common underpinning features, including low-grade persistent inflammation, phosphate toxicity, diminished Nrf2 activity, a depleted metabolic capability, depressed mitochondrial biogenesis and a low diversity gut microbiome. Social, psychological, lifestyle and nutritional risk factors can all influence the trajectory of age-related health, as part of an individuals exposome, which reflects the interplay between the genome and the environment. This is manifest as allostatic (over)load reflecting the burden of lifestyle/disease at both a physiological and molecular level. In particular, age-related genomic methylation levels and inflammatory status reflect exposome differences. These features may be mediated ...

A relatively recent concept in biology is that of allostasis. This concept is defined basically as the processes involved with achieving homeostasis. An allostatic load is the sum of energy demands. Female rattlesnakes have basically two energy demands when pregnant: 1) Stay alive (maintain basal bodily functions) and 2) make babies. The little movement they may do is to find a better basking spot. Other than that, their allostatic load is pretty straightforward. Romero et. al (2009) describe a new model for predicting how an animal will react with regard to allostatic adjustments called the Reactive Scope Model. It mentions four ranges in which an animal may be at any given time period. The first is predictive homeostasis which includes basic life functions that are predictable. The second is reactive homeostasis which accounts for unpredictable and potentially threatening changes in the environment. Third is homeostatic overload where an animal has exceeded its physiological capacity to ...

SAGE - May 30, 2013. Many African American youth may develop high levels of allostatic load, a measure of physiological wear and tear on the body, by developing psychosocial competence under conditions of high risk related to socioeconomic status (SES). The current study was designed to test this hypothesis, which is based on John Henryism theory. In a representative sample of 489 African American youth living in the rural South, cumulative SES-related risks and teacher-reported competence were assessed at ages 11 to 13; depressive symptoms, externalizing behavior, and allostatic load were assessed at age 19. The data revealed that rural African American preadolescents who evinced high psychosocial competence under conditions of high cumulative SES-related risk displayed low levels of adjustment problems along with high allostatic load at age 19. The essence of subluxations is that they should be considered to be more subtle derangements. They may yet occur as misalignments rather than outright dislocations, but these may not be detectable by current technological methods. A more reliable yardstick to chiropractors is that they represent aberrations of movement integrity(either deficient or excessive motion), but reliable measurements of motion remain elusive. I have preferred to consider them to be physiologic dysfunctions, which may be present with or without pain.2,3 It is also entirely conceivable that subluxations may be detected by muscular inhibition or facilitation, as proposed in theories of applied kinesiology4,5 and supported by preliminary research.6-8. The definition pertaining to physiologic dysfunctions may facilitate our understanding of subluxations, which in my opinion are not necessarily confined to the spine at all. They could represent localized inflammations or nutritional deficiencies, as well as the more ...

HIV continues to spread among Black men who have sex with men (MSM), but few interventions target high-risk Black men who have sex with men and women (MSMW). Black MSMW with histories of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) may be an especially vulnerable population for: a) high-risk sexual behaviors; b) negative psychological sequelae (e.g., depressive or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms); and c) neurobiological abnormalities in cardiovascular, neuroendocrine and/or immune systems (e.g., cortisol and norepinephrine), and HIV/AIDS progression. The purpose of this study was to test an HIV risk reduction intervention, guided by the Social Learning Theory, the Ecological Model, and the concept of allostatic load, a composite of the cumulative effects of stress on biological systems including psychoneuroimmunologic markers. Atopic dermatitis is a chronic relapsing eczematous skin disease characterized by pruritus and inflammation and accompanied by cutaneous physiologic dysfunction, with a majority of the patients having a personal or family history of atopic diathesis (see Chapter 27).1 Genetics has a great role to play and is one of the major diagnostic criteria.2 The role of environmental factors, such as temperature, humidity, and clothing, and psychological factors is also gaining prominence.3 The prevalence is greater in urban areas and among boys.4 Prevalence and incidence are greater in north and central India, compared to the east and south, because these regions experience harsh winters with low humidity.4 ...
Understanding pain as a public health priority helps to explain its tight linkage with social and economic determinants of health. The social epidemiologic evidence suggests strongly that patterns of NCDs from the hyperlocal to the global level are powerfully determined by the conditions in which people and communities live, work, and play [23]. Given the aforementioned comorbid relationship between a variety of NCDs and chronic pain, one would predict that chronic pain should correlate with some of these social determinants of health. This prediction is borne out in research that links with chronic pain a number of such determinants, including mental and physical stress at work, [24, 25] socioeconomic status, [26] rurality,[27] occupational status, [28] neighborhood, [29] race, [29, 30] and education [31].. One of the most promising theories regarding the causal pathways between such social factors and poor NCD and all-cause health outcomes is the allostatic load hypothesis [32, 33]. This ...

article{9e9eb8dd-ba7d-45ae-a439-5616e3167fe9, abstract = {The hormone corticosterone (CORT) is an important component of a birds response to environmental stress, but it can also have negative effects. Therefore, birds on migration are hypothesized to have repressed stress responses (migration-modulation hypothesis). In contrast to earlier studies on long-distance migrants, we evaluate this hypothesis in a population containing both migratory and resident individuals. We use a population of partially migratory blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus) in southern Sweden as a model species. Migrants had higher CORT levels at the time of capture than residents, indicating migratory preparations, adaptation to stressors, higher allostatic load or possibly low social status. Migrants and residents had the same stress response, thus contradicting the migration-modulation hypothesis. We suggest that migrants travelling short distances are more benefited than harmed by retaining the ability to respond to ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - The role of neuroinflammation and neurovascular dysfunction in major depressive disorder. AU - Jeon, Sang Won. AU - Kim, Yong Ku. PY - 2018/5/8. Y1 - 2018/5/8. In this context, an understanding of neuroinflammation and neurovascular dysfunction would enable a more comprehensive approach to depression. Inflammation is in a sense a type of allostatic load involving the immune, endocrine, and nervous systems. Neuroinflammation is involved in the pathophysiology of depression by increasing proinflammatory cytokines, activating the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis, increasing glucocorticoid resistance, and affecting serotonin synthesis and metabolism, neuronal apoptosis and neurogenesis, and neuroplasticity. In future, identifying the subtypes of depression with increased vulnerability to inflammation ...
