Allium sativum, commonly known as garlic, is a species in the onion genus, Allium.. Its close relatives include the onion, shallot, leek, chive, and Allium chinense. With a history of several thousand years of human consumption and use, garlic is native to the region between the Mediterranean and China, and has long been a common seasoning worldwide. It was known to Ancient Egyptians, and has been used both as a food flavoring and as a traditional medicine.. Allium sativum is a bulbous plant. It grows up to 1.2 m (4 ft) in height. Its hardiness is USDA Zone 8. It produces hermaphrodite flowers. It is pollinated by bees and other insects.. Allium sativum grows in the wild in areas where it has become naturalized. The "wild garlic", "crow garlic", and "field garlic" of Britain are members of the species Allium ursinum, Allium vineale, and Allium oleraceum, respectively. Identification of the wild progenitor of common garlic is difficult, due to the sterility of its many cultivars which may all be ...
Scallions, also known as spring onions, are a rich source of nutrients. The USDA states that the tops and bulb of raw scallions are a rich with vitamins and minerals. [1] Scallions contain vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K, niacin, thiamin, riboflavin, folate, calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, phosphorus, sodium and zinc. Moreover, the vegetable is also rich in water content, fiber, protein and biologically-active chemicals. These vegetables have tremendous antioxidant activity, which helps protect against several health conditions. Furthermore, the presence of organosulfides in scallions makes them even more beneficial for health.. Scallions as a Source of Sulfur-rich Compounds. Scallions contain thiosulfinates in abundance. According to a study published in Frontiers in Nutrition, these thiosulfinates carry numerous health advantages due to their antifungal, antioxidant, antithrombotic, antibacterial and antihypertensive properties. [2] These biologically active compounds are ...
John Grimshaw wrote ,Of course it must agree in gender! Allium is a neuter noun so ,any adjectives in Latin must agree with it and have a neuter , -um ending, not a feminine -a, ,Unless it was published before 1957 the use of Album is illegitimate ,anyway, and a name in a vernacular language should be substituted. Regarding Allium maximowiczii var. shibutsuense Album, as I mentioned, it was simply received as Allium maximowiczii album. I understand that with the international code of nomenclature, rules exist regarding naming as you perscribe, thats why for convenience I list it as Allium maximowiczii var. shibutsuense Album, suggesting a cultivar name to distinguish it from the regular species. Per the rules, calling it Allium maximowiczii var. shibutsuense Alba would also be invalid. Then call it Allium maximowiczii var. shibutsuense Album, where double quotes are a method of suggesting a garden form thats not botanically recognized yet distinct horticulturally. Or lets apply a ...
Allium × cornutum Clementi ex Visiani is unique onion type, traditionally cultivated in South and coastal Croatia under the name Ljutika and used in human diet. It is resistant to cold weather conditiones and drought, and adapted to growth on poor stony ground. This paper attempts to explore genome structure, shed light on the nutritional composition and check biological activity of this species. Molecular-cytogenetic and phylogenetic analysis of two ribosomal genes, 18S-5.8S-26S rDNA and 5S rDNA revealed that Ljutika is a unique hybrid of three onion species: common onion, Allium cepa L., and two Asian onions, Allium pskemense B. Fedtsch and Allium roylei Stearn. One haploid genome (x = 8) of each of the three parent species was identified and visualized on mitotic and meiotic chromosomes of A. × cornutum by fluorescent in situ hybridization. Chloroplast and mitochondrial gene analysis showed that Ljutika possesses a sterile CMS-S type of cytoplasm, important for onion breeding. ...

Abhishek Bhanot, Richa Shri. Pharmacognosy Research 2010 2(6):374-384. Introduction: Diabetic Neuropathy (DN) is a major microvascular complication of uncontrolled diabetes. This may result from increased oxidative stress that accompanies diabetes. Hence plants with antioxidant action play an important role in management of diabetes and its complications. Materials and Methods: This study was designed to evaluate preventive as well as curative effect of methanol extracts of outer scales and edible portions of two plants with established antioxidant action - Allium cepa and Allium sativum, in induced DN in albino mice. Mice were divided into control, diabetic and test extracts treated groups. Test extracts were administered daily at a dose of 200 mg/kg p.o. for 21 days, in the preventive group prior to onset of DN, and in the curative group after the onset of DN. Hyperalgesia and oxidative stress markers were assessed. STZ-diabetic mice showed a significant thermal hyperalgesia (as assessed by ...
In this experiment we are traveling to look at the effects of Allium Sativum ( garlic ) a volatile substance on the growing and sprouting of radish seeds. Since Allium sativum is a volatile substance and secretes an olfactory property in the air and oils in to the land, it should effects the growing and sprouting of radish seeds in a close locality to it. Assuming Allium sativum is an allelopathic substance, we should witness inhibited growing and sprouting of radish seeds.. Literature reappraisal. In a survey to look into the growing of weeds near Cucumis sativuss under the consequence of allelopathy. It was found that weeds will non turn near adequate to vie for the foods of the Cucumis sativuss that have been exposed to allelopathic toxins. In this survey it was found that the toxicity from leachates from the pots incorporating the inhibitory Cucumis sativuss exhibited allelopathic qualities. They found that the growing of weeds around Cucumis sativuss with inhibited indexs was between 87 % ...
8-Hydroxyquinoline (HQ) chelates Mg2+ and Mn2+ and, secondarily, affects the activities of DNA and RNA polymerases. The in vivo effect of HQ has been estimated in Allium cepa L. meristems growing under new growth kinetics in the presence of this agent. HQ (at both 5 X 10(−5) M and 10(−4) M) depressed incorporation of [3H]uridine much more effectively than that of [3H]-thymidine. Cycle kinetics in meristems behaved as if they were independent of the rates of synthesis or accumulation of RNA since, under HQ, cycle time was only moderately modified and the new cycle kinetics achieved could be explained by the new rates of [3H]thymidine incorporation. Lengthened S periods were partially compensated for by shortened G2 phases, suggesting that, in these cells, both the growth cycle and its coupling with the DNA-division cycle were not disturbed by a decreased amount of RNA. Finally, the nucleolar cycle during mitosis, but not the interphase nucleolus, was modified under the new rates of RNA ...

... From the Alps, this is considered to be possibly the most desirable of allium species being closely related to the equally beautiful Allium narcissiflorum. A very scarce species, it has heads of up to five individually very large flowers of bright rose pink, hanging in clustered heads in summer. This is a neat, non-invasive plant for a sunny alpine bed or trough and produces very few seeds indeed.
Allium is a genus of flowering plants. It contains garlic, leek, onions and chives. There are hundreds of species, some of which have been cultivated for much of human history. Today, about a dozen species are economically important. The type species of the genus is Allium sativum, commonly known as garlic.[1] The taxonomy of Allium is difficult, the boundaries between species are often unclear. For this reason, the number of recognised species varies between 260, and 860. Most people think there are about 750 species.[2] ...

Indiscriminate handling and disposal of industrial effluents into the environment represents one of the major sources of environmental pollution which invariably affects the health of man, plants and animals. The toxic effect of effluent from a candy-producing industry was investigated in terms of root growth inhibition and overall phytotoxicity using bio-indicator plants; Allium cepa and Zea mays. The presence and concentrations of some metals of environmental concern as well as Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in the effluent were also determined. The Allium cepa and Zea mays tests were carried out at concentrations of 1, 5,10,25,50 and 100% of the untreated effluent. There was statistical significant (P,0.05) inhibition of root growth in both plants, the shoot length measurement also showed significant difference (P,0.05) at the different concentrations of the effluent as compared with the control. Morphological abnormalities were observed in the roots of the bio-indicator plants, it is ...

The plant grows from a narrow bulb and consists of a pair of leaves and a scape bearing a round head of small flowers. The leaves are broad and pointed, borne on distinct petioles, suggesting those of Ramsons (A. ursinum) but without the rank garlic stink. When broken they are, of course, smelly, but the odour reminds me more of a stock cube than an onion outright. Their most interesting feature is the presence of longitudinal white veins, which make them rather handsome; the lamina is light green now, but it emerges with a red flush on which the stripes are particularly conspicuous. The plants name refers to both the leaf shape (ovalifolium) and the stripes (leuconeurum). According to Flora of China, the variety is found in forests in western Sichuan between 2800-3800 m. There are several broad-leaved Allium species in China, but only this taxon has white-veined leaves ...

Onions and garlic have evolved chemical weapons to protect themselves from predation and disease. In his book Garlic and Other Alliums: The Lore and the Science, chemist Eric Block describes that intricate chemistry, and writes of alliums in kitchens, medicine cabinets and opera houses.
Allium caeruleum (syn. Allium azureum) is readily available, inexpensive, free flowering and very pretty in the garden. This species, here photographed in the Maryland, USA garden of Jim McKenney in early June 2005, seems to require dry summers to persist from year to year. As the plants get older, the umbels tend to become irregular and bulbiferous. But the wonderful color does not change. The orange flower seen in one of the photographs is the perennial poppy variously known as Papaver atlanticum or P. rupifragum. The poppy and the blue onion make a cheery late spring combination. Photo 3 by M.Gastil-Buhl shows bulbs on a 1 cm grid. Photo 4 by David Pilling displays bulbils in the flower head. ...

One of the most common causes of pet poisoning comes from ingesting foods in the allium family. If youre fairly certain theres no allium in your kitchen, think again. The allium family consists of onions, garlic, leeks, shallots, chives, scallions, and hundreds of wild species. While these foods provide countless health benefits for humans, they can easily kill our cats and dogs. Allium ingestion can lead to Heinz body anemia, a condition in which red blood cells are destroyed. Clinical signs include lethargy, pale gums, weakness, loss of appetite, labored breathing, discolored urine, or collapse. Cats are more likely to suffer from Heinz body anemia. Since the culprits are present in so many of our foods, it is easy to forget what can safely be given to our pets. The most severe case seen at Sabal Chase was that of a Jack Russell Terrier who had helped herself to a spice packet. Santa had placed a chefs gift basket under the tree, and while the misdeed had been noticed, the ingredients of ...

Garlic (Allium sativum L., Alliaceae), Persian shallot (Allium ascalonicum L., Alliaceae ) and Sage (Salvia officinalis L., Lamiaceae) are believed to have hypoglycemic properties and have been used traditionally as antidiabetic herbal medicines in Iran. In this study, diabetes was induced by subcutaneous injection of alloxan monohydrate (100 mg kg−1) to male Wistar rats. Antidiabetic effects of methanolic extracts of the above mentioned three plants on alloxan-diabetic rats was investigated in comparison with the effects of antidiabetic drugs such as acarbose, glibenclamide and metformin by measuring postprandial blood glucose (PBG), oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), inhibition of rat intestinal α-glucosidase enzymes activities and pancreatic Insulin and cardiac Glut-4 mRNAs expression. In short term period, hypoglycemic effects of A. sativum and A. ascalonicum showed significant reduction of PBG similar to glibenclamide (5 mg kg−1 bw) while S. officinalis significantly reduced PBG similar
