Background: The professional education of cardiovascular perfusionists in Germany and the expertise required for successful practice have not often been studied. Here, the necessary skills for clinical cardiovascular perfusionists are described. Method: The prerequisites for the practice of the profession, expected future developments and the question of the positioning of a future professional perfusionist training within the educational system were discussed with ten experienced perfusionists. These individuals were interviewed in a semi-standardized fashion following an interview manual and the interviews were evaluated using qualitative research methods. Results: The professional skills currently required of perfusionists correspond to the list of activities published by the German Society of Cardiovascular Enginering. New areas are knowledge of management and, increasingly, social competence and self-management skills. Future tasks for perfusionists will be more diversified than at present. ...

This systematic review identified 32 studies that investigated a variety of KT strategies to put research into practice in the allied health disciplines. This review complements the extant research on broad approaches to put research into practice in particular disciplines, such as nursing e.g.,[10],[11] and the reviews of specific KT strategies (e.g., audit and feedback, financial incentives) with a focus on medicine e.g.,[7-9]. Until now, reviews completed by Hakkennes and Dodd[19] and Menon et al.[20] provided the most comprehensive data on KT strategies in allied health; however, our review built on this existing research in several important ways. First, our review explored all types of interventions or approaches (i.e., a variety of professional and financial interventions) to put research into professional practice. Second, our review had a concise conceptualization of allied health that reflected typical, acute care health environments in Canada (i.e., containing five professions). ...

Living with chronic co-morbidities implies long-lasting, always present conditions associated with highly variable health trajectories. In this study, ecological momentary assessment was used to explore nine older womens experiences of living with co-morbidities. Each participant completed a daily diary, which focused on 10 variables related to energy, pain, effort expended, and an overall health rating, for 21 days. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to explore intra-individual variation in daily health experiences and health-related burden, and determine the extent to which health-related burden was related to daily health experiences. Each of the daily health experience variables sipiificantly predicted health-related burden. Over half of the variation was attributed to the predictor variables. These findings reveal the dynamic nature of living with multiple chronic conditions and demonstrate the utility of daily diaries for measuring fluctuating states of health in community-dwelling older

The perfusionist assembled the heart lung bypass equipment and calibrated and checked the numerous safety devices. The perfusionist also check all systems against an extensive checklist, cross referenced with a perfusionist colleague. The perfusionist also set up an auto-transfusion system to collect any blood lost during the surgery, to wash it and reinfuse the blood back into the patient later.. The heart-lung device is filled with a balanced saline solution, heparin for anti-coagulation and is connected into Jims circulation, via cannulae inserted by the surgeon. The blood was drained away from the heart, and the perfusionist pumped it back past the heart into Jims aorta. Jims heart would normally pump over four litres/minute at rest and the perfusionist maintained the rate to adequately perfuse all the patients organs. The perfusionist also worked to keep the blood pressure at appropriate levels, while controlling the oxygen delivered and carbon dioxide removed from the blood, and ...

Background: The internet continues to offer new forms of support for health decision making. Government, charity, and commercial websites increasingly offer a platform for shared personal health experiences, and these are just some of the opportunities that have arisen in a largely unregulated arena. Understanding how people trust and act on this information has always been an important issue and remains so, particularly as the design practices of health websites continue to evolve and raise further concerns regarding their trustworthiness. Objective: The aim of this study was to identify the key factors influencing US and UK citizens trust and intention to act on advice found on health websites and to understand the role of patient experiences. Methods: A total of 1123 users took part in an online survey (625 from the United States and 498 from the United Kingdom). They were asked to recall their previous visit to a health website. The online survey consisted of an updated general Web trust

Here we summarise our thinking behind the items in AMSTAR 2, which are numbered as in the instrument (see supplementary figure). Supplementary appendix 1 provides a more complete users guide.. 1. Did the research questions and inclusion criteria for the review include the components of PICO?. It is common practice to use the PICO description (population, intervention, control group, and outcome) as a convenient and easily memorised framework for a study question. Sometimes a timeframe should be added if this is critical in determining the likelihood of a study capturing relevant clinical outcomes (eg, an effect of the intervention is only expected after several years).. 2. Did the report of the review contain an explicit statement that the review methods were established prior to the conduct of the review and did the report justify any significantdeviations from the protocol?. Systematic reviews are a form of observational research, and the methods for the review should be agreed on before the ...

Its no secret that our bodies change as we get older. The things we notice - joint pain, graying hair, wrinkles, and the rest - are mostly annoyances. But what goes on in our gut can have a real impact on our health and longevity.. The gut harbors most of the immune system, and its a sad biological fact that our immune response loses its effectiveness as we get older. Until recently, though, scientists have not been able to pinpoint exactly why. A new study now points directly at changes that take place in the aging gut.. The body produces an immune-system regulator called interleukin 6 (IL-6) in response to microbes attacking the gut, a process that produces inflammation. But researchers at the Institute of Food Research in the U.K. and the University of Siena in Italy found that older people they tested produced more IL-6 than younger study participants. That surplus of IL-6 creates unnecessarily high levels of gut inflammation that a raft of studies have shown accelerate the aging ...

The American Society of ExtraCorporeal Technology was founded in 1964 with the belief that members of the then-new allied health field could best serve their profession by sharing their thoughts and experiences. Steady growth was the keynote of AmSECT, as the ranks of Perfusionists expanded with the increasing demand for open-heart surgery. During the past decade, changes in lifestyle and improvements in the treatment of cardiac disease have resulted in Perfusionists facing the challenge of identifying new opportunities and expanded their practices in the areas of perioperative blood management, wound healing, ventricular assistance, and expanded uses of extracorporeal circulation.. Today AmSECT has over 2,000 members throughout the world and is dedicated to promoting the profession. The goals of the Society are diverse and include:. ...

Twenty years ago, Perfusion.com was founded by Bryan V. Lich, who was then a perfusion student at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston, Texas. The idea for the company was spawned as a student project and was an endeavor to create an online forum for perfusionists all over the world. The initial focus of the company was to provide information services, foster academic research and improve professional communication. This objective was achieved, as the website quickly became popular among the perfusion community.. In 1998, Perfusion.com began providing temporary perfusion services on short-term notice to hospitals throughout the United States. The demand for this service grew steadily as the cardiac surgery climate evolved in the late 1990s. During this time, we continued to develop our website, which became the leading informational resource for the worlds perfusionists. We also published The Manual of Clinical Perfusion, which is now an integral part of the didactic curriculum at every ...

Role at Moorfields. I am a clinical academic Orthoptist at Moorfields/UCL. My work involves a frontline clinical role, managing patients with eye movement and developmental vision problems. In addition to this, I undertake translational clinical research, in collaboration with clinicians, scientists, psychologists, health economists and statisticians internationally.. Most rewarding part of your role. Each and every interaction I have with patients. The ability to improve vision and alleviate symptoms is incredibly rewarding. I particularly enjoy discussing how the research we undertake at Moorfields has improved/informed our care.. Most surprising part of your role. No matter whether you are a physician (no matter your specialty) or an allied health professional, like it or not, the role of allied health professionals is growing.. From the medical doctor perspective, this brings an initial reaction of fear. From the paraprofessional perspective, this brings an initial reaction of opportunity. And from the hospital perspective, especially the hospital-with-aligned-providers perspective, this brings an initial reaction of the opportunity to play more competitors off of one another.. The latest tectonic event in this regard: A March 15, 2012, ruling of the California Court of Appeal, the states intermediary level court, that was of little surprise to legal scholars but of tremendous angst to the California Medical Association and the California Society of Anesthesologists, in which the court affirmed that California law does not require that CRNAs be supervised by physicians. In other words, unless overturned by the California Supreme Court, CRNAs may ...

OBJECTIVES To determine patterns of symptoms across age groups, identify symptom groups associated with ovarian hormonal depletion or other variables, and develop a prediction model for each symptom. DESIGN This was a cross-sectional survey of 4,517 women ages 20 to 70 years recruited from market research panels in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Italy using a self-report questionnaire that included general health information and a checklist of 36 symptoms. Stepwise regression was used to determine for each symptom how prevalence varied with age, indicators of menopausal hormonal changes, and the effects of other explanatory variables, including body mass index, morbidity, and country. Hierarchical clustering was used to group symptoms. RESULTS Six groups of symptoms were found, of which two groups, with seven symptoms in total, were related to markers of menopausal hormonal change: a group consisting of hot flashes and night sweats and a second group including poor memory;

This is the first study to examine the experiences of allied health managers in the managing of and training for the staff that deliver weekend allied health services. It has revealed two major uncertainties faced by managers when providing weekend allied health services on acute medical and surgical wards: Do the costs outweigh the benefits? and What type of service should be provided? These uncertainties indicate there may be great variation in how these services are delivered in real life and in the actual cost-effectiveness of these real life programs. The challenges described by the participants in this study imply that running a sustainable and efficient weekend service is very difficult, given the problems with recruiting, training, rostering and retaining staff and the limitations to other service availability on the weekends.. A number of managers perceived benefits to both patients and the health service in providing weekend allied health services and saw the decision to provide ...
California hospitals are concerned about the need for an adequate supply of highly skilled health professionals to meet the demands for health care services now and in the future. Numerous studies have validated the need to address critical health professional shortages in nursing and the allied health occupations. However, efforts to implement recommended strategies have been hindered by a lack of a coordinated statewide effort involving health employers and other necessary partners. In response to the need for focus on this issue and the need for statewide solutions, CHA established the CHA Workforce Committee in 2007. Members of the committee include a broad cross-section of Californias hospitals, both urban and rural, and also represent the states various geographic regions. The committee has been focused primarily on allied health professional shortages, but in 2013 broadened its mission to include supporting various statewide nursing and physician shortage initiatives. The committee ...

As the need for qualified medical and allied health professions has grown, so too have the natural feeder undergraduate programs of kinesiology across the country. With an impending enrollment cliff, it is necessary to assess the needs of our students and be proactive in addressing curricular issues, initiatives, internship opportunities, and academic advising support. The purpose of this article is to highlight formal and informal data collection strategies and suggest solutions to undergraduate issues that pertain to retention and success. Data from current students and alumni shed light on issues that plague kinesiology programs and present unique challenges to students as they attempt to pursue careers in the medical and allied health fields. Two R1 kinesiology programs identified similarly themed issues using informal and formal data collection approaches. Those themes were undergraduate major identification, career options, curricular issues, financial concern, and emotional fortitude. ...

There is much debate today in the ophthalmic and paraoptometric community regarding certification. Do we, allied health personnel, need to be certified? We are easily hired into our positions in ophthalmology and optometry offices, without it. Some, if not most, doctors perfer to employ non-certified personnel and train em themselves. There are many reasons for this, one being, it is less expensive to their bottomline. However, as time goes on, if one is to get promoted, it seems that a lack of certification can hold you back. Most doctors will pay you more, if they see that you are motivated to go that extra step. If not, they may not increase your salary significantly. Certification benefits you, the patient, and your doctor employer. I believe that all allied health personnel should become certified as soon as they are eligible. Credentials are more important than you think. Certification says a lot about you as a person. It says you care enough about your career and role in eyecare to prove ...

My journey into research started in 2015 through the NIHR /Health Education England (HEE) integrated clinical academic pre-masters internship scheme. I used that opportunity to develop my research knowledge and skills and then got a place on the NIHR /HEE MSc in clinical research methods at the University of Leeds. Studying part-time meant I could keep my links with clinical. I was able to champion research within the trust and find opportunities to develop my research interests and profile. In 2016, I was involved in Way Forward Doncaster - a collaborative project exploring how co-productive approaches work to help transfer research knowledge into action. In 2017, I was selected to become an Allied Health Professions for Public Health (AHPs4PH) advocate completing a local public health service improvement project. In September 2017, I was nominated for the trusts research of the year award and also received the star of stars award ...

Description. A podcasting site was developed to complement the module content for the Research and Evidence Based Practice module within the SNMSC. The module is accessed by undergraduate pre- and post- registration nursing students as well as undergraduates from allied health professions. It is delivered using a blended learning approach using WebCT as the platform for the online content. The aim of the podcasts was to promote research teaching linkages, which is one of the enhancements themes (SHEEC 2010a). Podcasting had been used successfully within the University in other modules and programmes as well as the Edinburgh Napier Podcasting Project, and recent pedagogical research also suggested it was a useful technology to promote active engagement in learning (Vogt et al. 2010). The aim was to ...

Health care in Colombia refers to the prevention, treatment, and management of illness and the preservation of mental and physical well being through the services offered by the medical, nursing, and allied health professions in the Republic of Colombia. Tropical diseases are important issues in Colombia because they area major causes of death. Malaria affects nearly 85% of the national territory, mainly the Pacific ocean coast, the Amazon jungle and eastern savannas, with an estimated of 250,000 cases/year and a mortality rate of 3/100,000. The main agent is Plasmodium vivax with 66% of the cases, except on the Pacific coast, where Plasmodium falciparum causes 75% of the cases. Yellow fever and Dengue fever are major public health concerns, because of their high epidemic potential, high mortality rate and wide distribution of Aedes aegypti. The Colombian government develops vaccination campaigns against yellow fever on a regular basis. Chagas disease is endemic to the Santander Department and ...

This introduces the symposium on judgment aggregation. The theory of judgment aggregation asks how several individuals judgments on some logically connected propositions can be aggregated into consistent collective judgments. The aim of this introduction is to show how ideas from the familiar theory of preference aggregation can be extended to this more general case. We first translate a proof of Arrows impossibility theorem into the new setting, so as to motivate some of the central concepts and conditions leading to analogous impossibilities, as discussed in the symposium. We then consider each of four possible escape-routes explored in the symposium.. ...
But if he were to thoroughly explore the viability of Bohms theory, Bell needed to answer the challenge of the so-called impossibility proofs against hidden variables. Bell addressed these in a paper entitled On the Problem of Hidden Variables in Quantum Mechanics.[11]:1 (Bell had actually written this paper before his paper on the EPR paradox, but it did not appear until two years later, in 1966, due to publishing delays.[15]) Here he showed that John von Neumanns argument[16] does not prove the impossibility of hidden variables, as it was widely claimed, due to its reliance on a physical assumption that is not valid for quantum mechanics-namely, that the probability-weighted average of the sum of observable quantities equals the sum of the average values of each of the separate observable quantities.[17] Bell subsequently claimed, The proof of von Neumann is not merely false but foolish!.[18] In this same work, Bell showed that a stronger effort at such a proof (based upon Gleasons ...
Mere possibility is not an adequate basis for asserting scientific plausibility. A precisely defined universal bound is needed beyond which the assertion of plausibility, particularly in life-origin models, can be considered operationally falsified. But can something so seemingly relative and subjective as plausibility ever be quantified? Amazingly, the answer is, Yes. A method of objectively measuring the plausibility of any chance hypothesis (The Universal Plausibility Metric [UPM]) is presented. A numerical inequality is also provided whereby any chance hypothesis can be definitively falsified when its UPM metric of ξ is | 1 (The Universal Plausibility Principle [UPP]). Both UPM and UPP pre-exist and are independent of any experimental design and data set. No low-probability hypothetical plausibility assertion should survive peer-review without subjection to the UPP inequality standard of formal falsification (ξ | 1).

Degree), or four-year faculties and schools, leading to a Bachelors of Arts degree.. With regards to the school, admission necessities may vary, some programs may need interviews, access assessments and prior allied health experience and recommendation, but all ultrasound tech schools warrant a high-school diploma or a GED equivalency. Take note that all ultrasound technical schools must be authorized by the Commission of Accreditation of Allied Well being Education Programs (CAAHEP), but students who attend non-AAHEP-certified ultrasound tech schools have the opportunity of taking the ARDMS certifying exam after completing a season of work experience.. Generally the curriculum for ultrasound tech schools must cover, in addition to the coursework, hands-on instruction in sonographic physics and arrangement, gray scale and color-flow Doppler sonography, medical values and terminology, human structure and physiology, basic obstetric and gynecologic sonography. Ultrasound tech schools might also ...
