Most reflect genetic influences, and each test appears to reflect the contribution of a relatively distinct collection of genes. This genetic heterogeneity implies that no single test can claim to capture the construct ethanol intoxication completely. Depending on the test, and when measurements are made, acute functional tolerance to even a single dose of ethanol must be considered as a contributing factor. Whether or not a test is conducted in naïvemice or as part of a test battery can influence sensitivity, and do so in a strain-dependent manner. Several facets of the diet are important to the reduction of the risks of a gouty episode: meat and seafood intake, alcohol use, and obesity. Although many physicians still advise patients to reduce their dietary intake of purines, purine-restricted diets only reduce mean serum urate levels by 0.6 mM/l, and such diets are relatively unpalatable.. For the moment, the best data related to diet comes from a recent study of 47,150 men over a 12-year period that shows meat and seafood increase the risk of gout. In contrast, dairy products, especially low-fat dairy products, are able to decrease the risk of gout in men. In addition to food, alcohol is another significant risk factor for gout. The relationship between gout and alcohol is more complex. Acute alcohol intoxication in individuals documents a higher plasma urate concentration when urate levels are measured after individuals have become sober. Such urate alterations may also occur as a result of not eating and the presence of ketosis. The ...

Acute alcohol use is associated with impaired immune responses and decreased proinflammatory cytokine production. Our earlier studies have shown that acute alcohol intake inhibits NF-kappaB DNA binding in an IkappaBalpha-independent manner. We report using human peripheral blood monocytes and Chinese hamster ovary cells transfected with CD14 cells that acute alcohol treatment in vitro exerts NF-kappaB inhibition by disrupting phosphorylation of p65. Immunoprecipitation of p65 and IkappaBalpha revealed that acute alcohol exposure for 1 h decreased NF-kappaB-IkappaBalpha complexes in the cytoplasm. Phosphorylation of p65 at Ser(536) is mediated by IkappaB kinase (IKK)beta and is required for NF-kappaB-dependent cellular responses. We show that acute alcohol treatment decreased LPS-induced IKKalpha and IKKbeta activity resulting in decreased phosphorylation of p65 at Ser(536). Furthermore, nuclear expression of IKKalpha increased after alcohol treatment, which may contribute to inhibition of NF-kappaB.

Drinking too much ethanol, aka alcohol, is the main cause of hangovers. Binge drinking can create free radicals. To keep your kidneys working the way they should be, youll need to drink one glass of water for every alcoholic drink you consume. In the scenario of a hangover, curing the problem with its cause would mean curing the hangover with alcohol. A hangover is your bodys reaction to drinking too much alcohol. Also a fan of the arts, sport, music and cats. Hangover vs. alcohol withdrawal: While both a hangover and alcohol withdrawal involve the bodys reaction to alcohol in some capacity, these conditions are ultimately very different. Blood/Breath Alcohol Concentration (BAC) is the amount of alcohol in the bloodstream or on ones breath. BAC is expressed as the weight of ethanol, in grams, in 100 milliliters of blood, or 210 liters of breath. BAC can be measured by breath, blood, or urine tests.. The number of drinks consumed is a very poor measure of intoxication largely because of variation in physiology and individual alcohol tolerance.. Variation exists with respect to:. ...
Penalties for drunk driving continue to become tougher over the years as the cost of this dangerous behavior rises. Reckless alcohol consumption among young people has also risen markedly, and it has been met with sharp intolerance. There are often lower legal limits for minor drivers and longer drivers license suspensions.. Drunk driving, driving while intoxicated (DWI), or driving under the influence (DUI), is typically determined by the alcohol content found in the drivers blood. Blood alcohol content (BAC) may be determined in two ways: through breath analysis or urinalysis. All but three states have lowered the legal limit of blood alcohol content from 0.10 to 0.08 percent. Also, thirty-four states have passed laws lowering the BAC to 0.02 percent or no amount for drivers under 21. Twelve states have also set a separate limit at 0.04 percent for commercial vehicle drivers.. Penalties for drunk driving are severe in most states. Virtually every state suspends the drivers license on a ...

Depending on state law, the two terms are both used to describe impaired or drunken driving. Some state laws refer to the offense of drunken driving as a DUI while others call it a DWI.. It gets tricky when states use both terms. Quite often, they will refer one to alcohol and the other to impairment by drugs or an unknown substance and the meaning can flip-flop from state to state. In some states, DWI refers to driving while intoxicated of alcohol with a blood alcohol content (BAC) over the legal limit, while DUI is used when the driver is charged with being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.. In other states where both terms are used, DWI means driving while impaired (by drugs, alcohol, or some unknown substance), while DUI means driving under the influence of alcohol. Its best to check the definitions of the state youre in.. ...

Some religious groups permit the consumption of alcohol. Some permit consumption but prohibit intoxication, while others prohibit alcohol consumption altogether. Many Christian denominations such as Catholic, Orthodox, and Lutheran use wine as a part of the Eucharist and permit the drinking of alcohol but consider it sinful to become intoxicated. In the Bible, the Book of Proverbs contains several chapters dealing with the bad effects of drunkenness and warning to stay away from intoxicating beverages. The book of Leviticus tells of Nadab and Abihu, Aaron the Priests eldest sons, who were killed for serving in the temple after drinking wine, presumably while intoxicated. The book continues to discuss monasticism where drinking wine is prohibited. The story of Samson in the Book of Judges tells of a monk from the tribe of Dan who is prohibited from cutting his hair and drinking wine.[46] Romans 13:13-14,[47] 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, Galatians 5:19-21,[48] and Ephesians 5:18[49] are among a number ...

Background. Many patients seeking emergency care are under the influence of alcohol, which in many cases implies a differential diagnostic problem. For this reason early objective alcohol screening is of importance not to falsely assign the medical condition to intake of alcohol and thus secure a correct medical assessment.. Objective. At two emergency departments, demonstrate the feasibility of accurate breath alcohol testing in emergency patients with different levels of cooperation.. Method. Assessment of the correlation and ratio between the venous blood alcohol concentration (BAC) and the breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) measured in adult emergency care patients. The BrAC was measured with a breathalyzer prototype based on infrared spectroscopy, which uses the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) in the exhaled air as a quality indicator.. Result. Eighty-eight patients enrolled (mean 45 years, 53 men, 35 women) performed 201 breath tests in total. For 51% of the patients ...

BACKGROUND: Subjective perceptions of alcohol intoxication are associated with altered risk for alcohol abuse and dependence. Acute adaptation of these perceptions may influence such risk and may involve genes associated with pleasant perceptions or the relief of anxiety. This study assessed the effect of variation in the GABAA receptor genes GABRG1 and GABRA2 and recent drinking history on the acute adaptation of subjective responses to alcohol. METHODS: One hundred and thirty-two nondependent moderate to heavy drinkers, aged 21 to 27, participated in 2 single-blind, counterbalanced sessions, approximately 1 week apart. One session was an intravenous alcohol clamp, during which breath alcohol concentration was held steady at 60 mg/dl (60 mg%) for 3 hours, and the other an identical session using saline infusion. Subjective perceptions of Intoxication, Enjoyment, Stimulation, Relaxation, Anxiety, Tiredness, and Estimated Number of Drinks were acquired before (baseline), and during the first ...
Since it is not always intuitively obvious which crimes are specific intent crimes, it is important to consult with the attorney. Assault is a general intent crime even though it requires a specific mental state. The distinction was made because this offense too often is associated with intoxication. However, assault with intent to murder is a specific intent crime. If the intent to murder is negated by intoxication or mental illness, then a defendant is found guilty of only assault. Arson is a general intent crime, so it also cannot be negated by intoxication. Murder is a specific intent crime despite there being no further act required. Defendants lacking the specific intent required for murder are found guilty of manslaughter. The distinction between murder and manslaughter developed to prevent individuals who killed another in a drunken brawl from receiving an automatic death penalty. Intoxication itself is no excuse for committing a crime. Since ancient times debate has existed as to ...

Alcohol is a major factor in traffic accidents. Based on data from the U.S. Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there was an alcohol-impaired traffic fatality every 50 minutes in 2018.. Alcohol-impaired crashes are those that involve at least one driver or a motorcycle operator with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08 grams per deciliter or above, the legal definition of impaired driving. According to NHTSA 10,511 people died in alcohol-impaired crashes in 2018. Alcohol-impaired crash fatalities accounted for 29 percent of all crash fatalities.. The Federal Bureau of Investigation estimates 1,001,329 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics in 2018. The arrest rate works out to one arrest for about every 227 licensed drivers in the United States.. The definition of alcohol-impaired driving was consistent throughout the United States until December 2018. All states and the District of Columbia except ...

Author(s): Echevarria, David J.; Hammack, Catherine M.; Jouandot, David J.; Toms, Christina N. | Abstract: Previous research reports that acute alcohol exposure disrupts shoaling behavior in the zebrafish. The purpose of these studies is to better understand how acute alcohol exposure (0%, 0.125%, 0.25%, 0.5%, and 1.0%) alters zebrafish behavior. The effects of alcohol on aggressive behaviors in humans have been widely researched. Previous research from this lab has shown a bimodal effect of alcohol on shoaling behavior in zebrafish, with 0.5% and 2.0% (v/v) disrupting shoaling while 1.0% and 1.5% showing no direct effect. Because shoaling is a social behavior and is altered during acute alcohol exposure, aggressive behavior between fish should be addressed. In this series of experiments we explored alcohols effects on aggressive behaviors. In order to address a possible role for alcohol induced aggression as it relates to shoaling we chose to examine the effects of acute alcohol exposure on zebrafish
Motor vehicle crashes involving impaired driving are a significant public health problem in the U.S. In 1994, there were an estimated 16,900 fatalities in alcohol-related crashes, which is the lowest number in many years (NHTSA, 1995). However, it still represents an average of one alcohol-related fatality every 30 minutes. In addition, an estimated 1.2 million people are injured annually in alcohol-related crashes and the burden of these crashes on society is over $46 billion in direct costs alone (Miller and Blincoe, 1994). Almost 2 in every 5 Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash at some time in their lives (NHTSA, 1994) Substantial progress has been made, however, since 1982. In that year, 57% of the 43,945 traffic fatalities were estimated to be alcohol-related (i.e. a driver or pedestrian/bicyclist had a positive blood alcohol concentration (BAC)). This translated to 25,170 alcohol-related traffic deaths. In 1994, the 16,900 alcohol-related traffic deaths represented 42% ...
Fatalities caused by road traffic accidents have become a major concern worldwide and road traffic accidents happen almost every day on Namibian national roads claiming lives of many road users. It is predicted that by 2030, road crash fatalities would be the fifth most frequent cause of death worldwide. Many efforts have been made to prevent loss of lives and to curb down the MVA expenses on compensations due to road traffic accident; however, road traffic fatalities are still on the increase. Therefore, reliable statistical analysis is required to understand the main determinants of road fatal accidents. The main objective of this study was to identify the best model in modelling Road Traffic Fatalities to establish factors contributing to the number of road traffic fatalities in Namibia. The study was a quantitative cross - sectional study using secondary data of road accidents collected on daily basis by National Road Safety Council (NRSC) for the whole country from January 2012 to December ...
Youve probably heard of personal breathalysers and wristbands that read your blood alcohol level. But now researchers at the University of California in San Diego have developed a tattoo that analyses your sweat to determine the amount of alcohol in your bloodstream.. The temporary stick-on tattoo releases a drug called pilocarpine onto your skin to induce sweating, and then reads your blood-alcohol levels using a flexible electronic device magnetically attached to the tattoo. The data is beamed via Bluetooth to your smartphone, where you can easily check if youre over the limit. This all happens in less than eight minutes, and if youve had too much to drink, the application can even notify the police or a medical professional.. Alcohol gets into your bloodstream quickly.. The amount and type of food in your stomach can change how quickly this occurs. For example, high-carbohydrate and high-fat foods can make your body absorb alcohol more slowly.. Certain types of alcoholic drinks get into your bloodstream faster. Stronger drinks tend to be absorbed faster.. Alcohol slows your breathing rate, heart rate, and how well your brain functions. These effects may appear within 10 minutes and peak at around 40 to 60 minutes. Alcohol stays in your bloodstream until it is broken down by the liver. The amount of alcohol in your blood is called your blood alcohol level. If you drink alcohol faster than the liver can break it down, this level rises.. Your blood alcohol level is used to legally define whether or not you are drunk. The legal limit for blood alcohol usually falls between 0.08 and 0.10 in most states. Acute and chronic alcohol intoxication, a worrying global public health issue, is the cause of many health and social problems. Reunion Island in the South West Indian ocean is no exception. Reunion Island is among the four French regions where premature mortality due to alcoholism and cirrhosis is the highest and foetal alcohol syndrome is seven times higher than that of metropolitan France. Vilain and colleagues undertook an exploratory analysis based on syndromic surveillance data to describe the emergency department visits for alcohol intoxication and factors associated with their variation. Alcohol intoxication attendances were the second most common reason for ED attendances after trauma and these attendances increased significantly on benefit payday, weekends and public holidays. The authors conclude this kind of syndromic surveillance system for monitoring public health ...
Background: We measured blood alcohol content (BAC) levels of attendees at professional sporting events and assessed the factors associated with higher BACs.. Methods: We conducted BAC tests of 362 adult attendees following 13 baseball games and three football games. We ran multivariate analyses to obtain factors associated with the risk of having a higher BAC.. Results: In this assessment, 40% of the participants had a positive BAC, ranging from 0.005 to 0.217. Those who reported tailgating before the event had 14 times the odds of having a BAC , 0.08 and those under age 35 had nearly 8 times the odds of having a BAC , 0.08 (both compared to a zero BAC). Attendees of Monday night football games were more likely to have positive BACs compared to attendees at all other games.. Conclusions: We found that it is feasible to assess BAC levels of attendees at professional sporting events. Our findings suggest that a significant number of attendees at professional sporting events may have elevated BAC ...

When you drink alcohol it is absorbed into your bloodstream where it circulates thus affecting the whole body. The blood alcohol concentration begins to rise ten minutes after the first sip. One drink of alcohol stays in the body for 2 hours after being consumed. The alcohol is absorbed by the stomach and the small intestines, and it is metabolized by the liver. The processing of alcohol is determined by many factors, including if your stomach is full meaning you have eaten recently, the size of your body and the rate at which you drink. A larger body has more circulating blood in its system so alcohol levels rise more slowly than in a smaller body; this explains why females tend to have more alcohol in their bloodstream compared to men. Also the amount of fat in the organism defines the alcohol levels because fat tissue does not absorb alcohol. Drinking slowly, while eating and also after meals slows the rate at which alcohol is absorbed. Liver metabolism is the process of converting alcohol ...
Teens and young adults who binge drink in college may be raising their risks of cardiovascular disease later in life, a U.S. researcher says. Shane Phillips of the University of Illinois at Chicago looked for early signs of heart disease by comparing 19 binge drinkers to 17 non-drinkers ages 18-25. Even though these individuals are young and healthy and dont have any other overt cardiovascular signs of disease, these data would suggest they may be on the road to developing problems, Phillips said in a statement. Phillips examined the ability of small blood vessels such as those in the arm to dilate, or widen. Reduction in dilating is a sign of an early tendency toward heart disease. Phillips found changes in the binge drinker group. The study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, found the binge drinkers had a reduction in the ability of the main artery of the upper arm to respond to stress-induced increased blood flow by widening, as compared to their non-drinking ...
Methyl alcohol poisoning has been mainly reported in community. Two cases of methyl alcohol poisoning occurred in a small-sized subcontracted factory which manufactured smartphone parts in Korea. One young female patient presented with dyspnea and visual disturbance. Another young male patient presented with visual disturbance and myalgia. They treated with sodium bicarbonate infusion and hemodialysis for metabolic acidosis. In addition, he received ethyl alcohol per oral treatment. Her and his urinary methyl alcohol concentration was detected as 7.632 mg/L, 46.8 mg/L, respectively, although they were treated hemodialysis. Results of the working environment measurement showed that the concentration of methyl alcohol (1030.1-2220.5 ppm) in the air exceeded the time weighted average (200 ppm). They were diagnosed with optic neuropathy due to methyl alcohol poisoning and still have visual impairment. Workers who hired as dispatched employees in a small-sized subcontracted factory were exposed to high
You can anticipate stiffer charges if it is your second offense with a blood alcohol level of.08.And an increase in blood alcohol levels means a boost in charges. For instance, a very first offense with blood alcohol level of.15 is a minimum of thirty days in prison. You substance abuse counseling could spent as much as 180 in jail.. I consider my great-grandfather Hugh, and my grandmother Doris, the two most significant influences on my sound. If you ever see my program, you will notice that I have actually never had any proper training; I learned by viewing them, and I make exactly what most refer to as a careless G chord using my thumb and middle finger, just as my seniors did. I decline to learn anymore chords than the five or 6 I discovered from them; these few chords have served me well, as Ive taped over four-hundred songs, more than a hundred of them originals.. substance abuse treatment Irvine and other locations have actually also been found. The main scene that we anticipate to see ...
Awareness of the problems associated with alcohol-impaired driving increased dramatically in the 1990s in response to the rise of citizen activist groups, notably Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD), and advertising campaigns and publicity efforts by organizations such as the Insurance Information Institute. Existing laws were strengthened, new laws were passed and task forces were created in several states. In addition, there was a noticeable change in attitudes toward drinking and driving.. Federal Legislation: In 1984 Congress enacted legislation that required highway construction funds to be withheld from states that did not adopt 21 as the legal drinking age for alcoholic beverages. This was the first time that federal legislation used financial incentives to persuade states to enact alcohol-impaired driving laws. The Omnibus Drug Initiative Act of 1988 (also called the Drunk Driving Prevention Act), helped to increase the adoption of the administrative license revocation law (ALR), which ...
role in endurance performance and further readily available stores of energy are necessary to fuel protein synthesis during muscle recovery from exercise.. Alcohol acts as a depressant and thus acts to reduce central nervous system (CNS) excitability and cerebral activity. Impaired CNS function results in decrements in cognitive function and motor skills. A CNS that is weakened can result in decreased performance on skilled tasks that require reaction time, fine motor control, levels of arousal, and judgment.. Post exercise alcohol intoxication interferes with the free testosterone and serum testosterone. Testosterone is heavily involved in muscle adaptation induced by training programs that utilize resistance training. The level of alcohol intoxication seems to play an important part in how testosterone levels are affected. It is shown that the greater amount of alcohol consumed the greater amount of damage that is inflicted on testosterone levels.. Aerobic performance has also been shown to ...

A new study finds states that require people convicted of drunk driving to install ignition interlock devices in their vehicles have lower rates of alcohol-related crash deaths compared with states that dont require the devices.
Many people are concerned with the alcohol effects on the brain and body. Most everybody has felt the effects of alcohol at one point or another in their lives including the difficulty walking and the slurred speech. Alcohol has been around for thousands of years and has been used...

The term hangover was originally a 19th century expression describing unfinished business-something left over from a meeting-or survival. In 1904, the meaning morning after-effect of drinking too much first surfaced. An alcohol hangover is associated with a variety of symptoms that may include dehydration, fatigue, headache, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence, weakness, elevated body temperature, hypersalivation, difficulty concentrating, sweating, anxiety, irritability, sensitivity to light and noise, erratic motor functions (including tremor), trouble sleeping, severe hunger, halitosis, and lack of depth perception. Ethanol has a dehydrating effect by causing increased urine production, which causes headaches, dry mouth, and lethargy. Dehydration also causes fluids in the brain to be less plentiful. This can be relieved by drinking water after consumption of alcohol. Alcohols effect on the stomach lining can account for nausea. Another contributing factor is the presence of ...

Blood Alcohol Content numbers and effects are estimated based on population data and assume that Jane metabolizes alcohol at a rate that brings her BAC down by 0.015 percent every hour. To describe the physiological effects that occur at higher BACs, we had Jane drinking very quickly-two drinks every 40 minutes. Spacing alcoholic drinks over a longer period would result in lower BACs. Blood alcohol levels are also affected by size (larger people can tolerate more), gender (compared to men, women generally have more fat, which contains less water than muscle, so they dont dilute alcohol in the blood as much and get drunk faster), tolerance, whether food was eaten before drinking and how much, and variations in levels of alcohol dehydrogenase, the enzyme that breaks down alcohol. Ethanol is a selective CNS depressant at low concentrations, and a general depressant at high concentrations. Initially, ethanol produces exhilaration and loss of inhibition, which progresses to lack of coordination, ataxia, slurred speech, gait disturbances, drowsiness, and, ultimately, stupor, and coma. The intoxicated child may demonstrate a flushed face, dilated pupils, excessive sweating, gastrointestinal distress, hypoventilation, hypothermia, and hypotension. Death from respiratory depression may occur at serum ethanol concentrations >500 mg/dL. Convulsions and death have been reported in children with acute ethanol intoxication owing to alcohol-induced hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia results from inhibition of hepatic gluconeogenesis and is most common in children younger than 5 years. It does not appear to be directly related to the quantity of ethanol ingested.4 ...

First-time DUI offenders who are arrested with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.15 or higher must install ignition interlock devices in any vehicles they operate for six months after the initial date of the conviction. For second offenses, you may only operate vehicles equipped with an ignition interlock device in Wyoming for a one-year period after the conviction date. For third DUI offenses, that period is increased to two years.. For fourth and additional DUI convictions, you may only operate vehicles outfitted with an ignition interlock device for the rest of your life. Every five years after the initial conviction, you may apply to the court for a removal of the ignition interlock device. If you have not been convicted of a DUI during your suspension, the court may allow you to remove the device.. Failure to submit to any required chemical tests will result in a suspension of your license for six months for first offenders. Second and further offenses will result in a suspension up to 18 ...

Ethanol continues to be the most frequently abused intoxicant in the United States.4 Drug testing in various work environments has become commonplace during the past two decades and will at times include blood, breath, or urine alcohol testing.5 While valid reasons for false positive drug tests do occur, a plethora of unusual and dubious explanations have been likewise tendered. Medical Review Officers (MRO) involved in evaluating such reports rely on past case reports, knowledge of laboratory analytical techniques, and other scientific evidence to validate or negate claims of drug use in the workplace. ABHS are now found in most hospitals and health-care facilities.1,3 Only one human report of serum ethanol levels following frequent clinical use of the ABHS has been reported.7 This finding of a negative serum ethanol level in this case is likely to be reproducible in all clinical settings as the physician attempted to simulate the most extreme use of the product that would be consistent with ...

Most breathalyzers use one of three technologies to detect Breath Alcohol Content or Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC), which is the concentration of alcohol in a persons breath: a semiconductor oxide sensor, a fuel cell sensor or a spectrophotometer, the latter being the technology used in large, table-top breathalyzers often found at police stations.. Semiconductor oxide-based testers, offer benefits, including low cost, low power consumption and small size. However, Semiconductor oxide based testers require calibration service on a more frequent basis.. Fuel cell testers, In over 30 US states, roadside evidential testing is now permitted using testers using fuel cells. A fuel cell measures alcohol content by creating a chemical reaction that oxidizes the alcohol in the sample and produces an electrical current. The more alcohol that is oxidized, the greater the current. The current is measured to determine the subjects BrAC.. Spectrophotometer technology is used in large, table-top ...

Monday, March 4, 2002. What is meant in warnings to pregnant women not to drink alcohol? Research has shown that even small levels of alcohol consumed during pregnancy may affect the fetus in damaging ways. In pregnant women, alcohol is not only carried to all organs and tissues, but also to the placenta, where it easily crosses through the membrane separating maternal and fetal blood systems. In this way, alcohol is transported directly to the fetus and to all its developing tissues and organs. When a pregnant woman drinks an alcoholic beverage, the concentration of alcohol in her unborn babys bloodstream is the same level as her own. Unlike the mother, however, the liver of a fetus cannot process alcohol at the same adults rate of one ounce every two hours. High concentrations of alcohol, therefore, stay in the fetus longer, often for up to 24 hours. In fact, the unborn babys blood alcohol concentration is even higher than the mothers during the second and third hour after a drink is ...
As former President of the National Secular Society, with a 25 year tenure, Barbara was honoured by several of the past and the present presidents of the Society.. Norman Bacrac (former editor of the Ethical Record at Conway Hall) led the formal birthday salutations, giving an affectionate overview of some of Barbaras achievements describing some of her early unique works such as Good God! - a string of verses to tie up the deity (1977); Atheism on a Soap-Box (1985); and Blackhams Best (2007, 3rd edition, which was edited by Barbara). He ended by talking about Barbaras bestseller, Humanism (an introduction to Humanism for secondary education), which is now in its seventh edition.. Keith Porteous Wood (current NSS President) spoke next, highlighting the depth and duration of Barbaras contribution to secular life, her courage and the unique application of her intellect to secular campaigns and secular philosophy. Remarking on her bravery, together with Nicholas Walter, in opposing the ...

This study investigated: 1) the effects of acute alcohol on delay discounting, 2) the effects of drinking status on delayed discounting, and 3) whether these effects differ according to reward type (alcohol vs. money). Heavy and light social alcohol users (n = 96) were randomized to receive either an acute dose of alcohol at 0.40 g/kg or 0.60 g/kg or placebo in a between-subjects, double-blind design. Delay discounting of alcohol and monetary rewards was measured using a hyperbolic model, with higher scores indicative of greater delay discounting ...
