BACKGROUND: To assess the prevalence and sociodemographic correlates of suicide involving acute alcohol intoxication among U.S. ethnic minorities. METHODS: Data were derived from the restricted 2003 to 2009 National Violent Death Reporting System. The study focused on the sociodemographic and toxicological information of 59,384 male and female suicide decedents for 16 states of the United States. Acute alcohol intoxication was defined as having a blood alcohol content (BAC) ,/=0.08 g/dl. Overall, 76% of decedents were tested for the presence of alcohol. RESULTS: The proportion of suicide decedents with a positive BAC ranged from 47% among American Indians/Alaska Natives (AIs/ANs) to 23% among Asians/Pacific Islanders (PIs). Average BAC was highest among AIs/ANs. Among those who were tested for BAC, the proportion of decedents legally intoxicated prior to suicide was as follows: Blacks, 15%; AIs/ANs, 36%; Asians/PIs, 13%; and Hispanics, 28%. Bivariate associations showed that most suicide ...

Findings show that American Indians are at much greater risk than other ethnic groups.. In 2009, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide ranked as the 10th leading overall cause of death in the United States. Prior research has also shown that alcohol use disorders confer increased risk for suicide, and are second only to mood disorders as common among individuals who have committed suicide. A study of the prevalence and sociodemographic correlates of suicide involving acute alcohol intoxication among U.S. ethnic minorities has found that American Indians are at much greater risk than other groups.. Results will be published in the May 2013 issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research and are currently available at Early View.. I do not think that most people in the U.S. are aware that suicide is ranked as the 10th leading cause of death, said Raul Caetano, regional dean (Dallas) and professor of epidemiology at The University of Texas School of Public ...

AU - Schwacha, Martin G.. AU - Chaudry, Irshad H.. AU - Choudhry, Mashkoor A.. PY - 2008/5. Y1 - 2008/5. N2 - Previously, we have shown that acute alcohol (EtOH) intoxication before burn injury potentiates the suppression of mesenteric lymph node T-cell effector responses. Moreover, the suppression in T-cell was accompanied with a decrease in p-38 and extracellular-signal-regulated kinase (ERK) activation. This study examined the role of protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTP) in suppressed T-cell p-38, ERK, and cytokine production after EtOH intoxication and burn injury. A blood EtOH level of ∼100 mg/dl in male rats (∼250 g) was achieved by gavaging animals with 5 ml of 20% EtOH suspension 4 hours before burn or sham injury (∼12.5% or 25% total body surface area [TBSA]). One day after injury, rats were killed and ...

Hemorrhagic shock (HS) following acute alcohol intoxication can increase proinflammatory cytokine production and induce marked immunosuppression. We investigated the effects of ethanol on physiopathology and cytokine levels following HS in acutely alcohol-intoxicated rats. Rats received an intravenous injection of 5 g/kg ethanol over 3 h followed by HS induced by withdrawal of 40% of total blood volume from a femoral arterial catheter over 30 min. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR) were monitored continuously for 48 h after the start of blood withdrawal. Biochemical parameters, including hemoglobin, ethanol, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine (Cre), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), and creatine phosphokinase (CPK), were measured at 30 min before induction of HS and 0, 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, 24, and 48 h after HS. Plasma prolactin, luteinizing hormone and estradiol levels were determined in six normal adult females before and during a period of acute alcohol intoxication. Plasma hormone levels found in these studies were compared with values obtained after administration of an isocaloric beverage. Each woman served as her own control for both studies which were carried out on the same day of the menstrual cycle (day 8, 9 or 10) over two consecutive menstrual cycles. Integrated plasma samples were obtained every 20 min for 6 consecutive hr before acute alcohol administration and during the ascending, peak and descending portions of the blood alcohol curve. After acute alcohol administration, all women achieved a moderate degree of intoxication, with mean peak blood alcohol levels of 88 mg/100 ml. No significant differences in levels of luteinizing hormone and estradiol were detected during any phase of the blood alcohol curve when compared to prealcohol administration values. No significant differences ...

Summary is not available for the mouse gene. This summary is for the human ortholog.] This protein belongs to the aldehyde dehydrogenase family of proteins. Aldehyde dehydrogenase is the second enzyme of the major oxidative pathway of alcohol metabolism. Two major liver isoforms of aldehyde dehydrogenase, cytosolic and mitochondrial, can be distinguished by their electrophoretic mobilities, kinetic properties, and subcellular localizations. Most Caucasians have two major isozymes, while approximately 50% of East Asians have the cytosolic isozyme but not the mitochondrial isozyme. A remarkably higher frequency of acute alcohol intoxication among East Asians than among Caucasians could be related to the absence of a catalytically active form of the mitochondrial isozyme. The increased exposure to acetaldehyde in individuals with the catalytically inactive form may also confer greater susceptibility to many types of cancer. This gene encodes a mitochondrial isoform, which has a low Km for ...

Invented as breath-analyzing products by Smith and Wesson in the late 1950s, but now, breathalyzers are instruments that are utilized in a number of professions to determine the amount of blood alcohol content by analyzing a breath sample obtained from an individual. Literally dozens of breathalyzer models exist, most hand-held. Because of their frequent use as evidence in criminal courts, their design and performance is subject to highly prescribed regulations.. Alcohol is not digested in the body; it is simply absorbed into the tissues of the mouth, throat, stomach and intestines and eventually excreted. In part, alcohol leaves the body via the breath; because the percent of the total blood alcohol that exists this way is predictable, the alcohol content of the breath can be used to calculate the total blood alcohol content, or BAC.. While the principles behind breathalyzers are sound, they can only more or less estimate BAC since they do not measure it directly. An artificially high or low ...

It is notable that a habitual or chronic drinker may develop a tolerance to the effects of alcohol, and may not show the symptoms of various intoxication stages as readily as those who do not drink often. A study from Alcohol and Alcoholism shows that people admitted to emergency departments with suspected alcohol intoxication had BAC levels varying from 0 to 0.4, and that the degree to which they showed symptoms was at least partly based on their tolerance for alcohol and how regularly they drank.. This creates a high risk not only when it comes to how much the person drinks, but also when it comes to getting sober and then returning to drinking. After a period of sobriety, the individuals tolerance drops and the large doses the person was accustomed to drinking before sobriety can become dangerous. For this reason, research-based treatment that provides the needed skills and tools to manage alcoholism and maintain sobriety into the future can help people live longer lives with lower risk of ...
Alcohol intoxication, also known as drunkenness or alcohol poisoning, is the negative behavior and physical effects due to the recent drinking of ethanol (alcohol). Symptoms at lower doses may include mild sedation and poor coordination. At higher doses, there may be slurred speech, trouble walking, and vomiting. Extreme doses may result in a decreased effort to breathe (respiratory depression), coma, or death. Complications may include seizures, aspiration pneumonia, injuries including suicide, and low blood sugar.Alcohol intoxication typically begins after two or more alcoholic drinks. Risk factors include a social situation where heavy drinking is common and a person having an impulsive personality. Diagnosis is usually based on the history of events and physical examination. Verification of events by the people a person was with may be useful. Legally, alcohol intoxication is often defined as a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of greater than 5.4-17.4 mmol/L (25-80 mg/dL or 0.025-0.080%). ...

Eyewitnesses are an important source of information in many criminal investigations. However, the memory of an eyewitness is not always accurate, and errors may occur that have serious consequences. Alcohol-related crimes are common and therefore, intoxicated witnesses are common. However, only a handful of published studies have described how alcohol affects eyewitnesses memory. The overall aim of the research described in this thesis was to examine how alcohol affects eyewitnesses memory. The thesis comprises three studies, which followed similar general procedures. The participants in the studies consumed an alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverage during a 15-minute period and then witnessed a film that depicting a staged kidnapping. The retention interval and recall format varied between the studies. The aim of Study I was to examine the influence of alcohol on eyewitnesses performances in a line-up setting. Denying a person the right to consult counsel before he or she decides to submit to a blood alcohol content test after an arrest for driving under the influence is constitutional a Pennsylvania Superior Court panel has ruled. Judge John T. Bender said that while the tactical decision to submit to the test can be critical to the defendant it is not so critical as to invoke the right to counsel. Bender likened the test to a search and seizure after a police officer finds probable cause.
Excess alcohol use is an important determinant of death and disability. Machine learning (ML)-driven interventions leveraging smart-breathalyzer data may help reduce these harms. We developed a digital phenotype of long-term smart-breathalyzer behavior to predict individuals breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) levels trained on data from a smart breathalyzer. We analyzed roughly one million datapoints from 33,452 users of a commercial smart-breathalyzer device, collected between 2013 and 2017. For validation, we analyzed the associations between state-level observed smart-breathalyzer BrAC levels and impaired-driving motor vehicle death rates. Behavioral, geolocation-based, and time-series-derived features were fed to an ML algorithm using training (70% of the cohort), development (10% of the cohort), and test (20% of the cohort) sets to predict the likelihood of a BrAC exceeding the legal driving limit (0.08 g/dL). States with higher average BrAC levels had significantly higher alcohol-related driving

Several facets of the diet are important to the reduction of the risks of a gouty episode: meat and seafood intake, alcohol use, and obesity. Although many physicians still advise patients to reduce their dietary intake of purines, purine-restricted diets only reduce mean serum urate levels by 0.6 mM/l, and such diets are relatively unpalatable.. For the moment, the best data related to diet comes from a recent study of 47,150 men over a 12-year period that shows meat and seafood increase the risk of gout. In contrast, dairy products, especially low-fat dairy products, are able to decrease the risk of gout in men. In addition to food, alcohol is another significant risk factor for gout. The relationship between gout and alcohol is more complex. Acute alcohol intoxication in individuals documents a higher plasma urate concentration when urate levels are measured after individuals have become sober. Such urate alterations may also occur as a result of not eating and the presence of ketosis. The ...

Our earlier studies have shown that acute alcohol intake inhibits NF-kappaB DNA binding in an IkappaBalpha-independent manner. We report using human peripheral blood monocytes and Chinese hamster ovary cells transfected with CD14 cells that acute alcohol treatment in vitro exerts NF-kappaB inhibition by disrupting phosphorylation of p65. Immunoprecipitation of p65 and IkappaBalpha revealed that acute alcohol exposure for 1 h decreased NF-kappaB-IkappaBalpha complexes in the cytoplasm. Phosphorylation of p65 at Ser(536) is mediated by IkappaB kinase (IKK)beta and is required for NF-kappaB-dependent cellular responses. We show that acute alcohol treatment decreased LPS-induced IKKalpha and IKKbeta activity resulting in decreased phosphorylation of p65 at Ser(536). Furthermore, nuclear expression of IKKalpha increased after alcohol treatment, which may contribute to inhibition of NF-kappaB.

Drinking too much ethanol, aka alcohol, is the main cause of hangovers. Binge drinking can create free radicals. To keep your kidneys working the way they should be, youll need to drink one glass of water for every alcoholic drink you consume. In the scenario of a hangover, curing the problem with its cause would mean curing the hangover with alcohol. A hangover is your bodys reaction to drinking too much alcohol. Also a fan of the arts, sport, music and cats. Hangover vs. alcohol withdrawal: While both a hangover and alcohol withdrawal involve the bodys reaction to alcohol in some capacity, these conditions are ultimately very different. Blood/Breath Alcohol Concentration (BAC) is the amount of alcohol in the bloodstream or on ones breath. BAC is expressed as the weight of ethanol, in grams, in 100 milliliters of blood, or 210 liters of breath. BAC can be measured by breath, blood, or urine tests.. The number of drinks consumed is a very poor measure of intoxication largely because of variation in physiology and individual alcohol tolerance.. Variation exists with respect to:. ...
Penalties for drunk driving continue to become tougher over the years as the cost of this dangerous behavior rises. Reckless alcohol consumption among young people has also risen markedly, and it has been met with sharp intolerance. There are often lower legal limits for minor drivers and longer drivers license suspensions.. Drunk driving, driving while intoxicated (DWI), or driving under the influence (DUI), is typically determined by the alcohol content found in the drivers blood. Blood alcohol content (BAC) may be determined in two ways: through breath analysis or urinalysis. All but three states have lowered the legal limit of blood alcohol content from 0.10 to 0.08 percent. Also, thirty-four states have passed laws lowering the BAC to 0.02 percent or no amount for drivers under 21. Twelve states have also set a separate limit at 0.04 percent for commercial vehicle drivers.. Penalties for drunk driving are severe in most states. Virtually every state suspends the drivers license on a ...
People were very likely to be wrong about their blood alcohol level. I understand that alcohol breath and blood testing is important, but this is terrible. People suck at this.. Can you imagine if the driving speed laws were like this? What if you didnt have a speedometer in your car, and youd never even seen one being used. What if the speed limit was 6,000 feet/minute? How would you know what that was like? Could you trust the other people on the road to know? Would you constantly recalculate your position and the time which had passed since your departure?. ...

Depending on state law, the two terms are both used to describe impaired or drunken driving. Some state laws refer to the offense of drunken driving as a DUI while others call it a DWI.. It gets tricky when states use both terms. Quite often, they will refer one to alcohol and the other to impairment by drugs or an unknown substance and the meaning can flip-flop from state to state. In some states, DWI refers to driving while intoxicated of alcohol with a blood alcohol content (BAC) over the legal limit, while DUI is used when the driver is charged with being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.. In other states where both terms are used, DWI means driving while impaired (by drugs, alcohol, or some unknown substance), while DUI means driving under the influence of alcohol. Its best to check the definitions of the state youre in.. ...

Limited improvement of performance was observed for one simpler component of managerial functioning at the lower intoxication ...

Some religious groups permit the consumption of alcohol. Some permit consumption but prohibit intoxication, while others prohibit alcohol consumption altogether. Many Christian denominations such as Catholic, Orthodox, and Lutheran use wine as a part of the Eucharist and permit the drinking of alcohol but consider it sinful to become intoxicated. In the Bible, the Book of Proverbs contains several chapters dealing with the bad effects of drunkenness and warning to stay away from intoxicating beverages. The book of Leviticus tells of Nadab and Abihu, Aaron the Priests eldest sons, who were killed for serving in the temple after drinking wine, presumably while intoxicated. The book continues to discuss monasticism where drinking wine is prohibited. The story of Samson in the Book of Judges tells of a monk from the tribe of Dan who is prohibited from cutting his hair and drinking wine.[46] Romans 13:13-14,[47] 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, Galatians 5:19-21,[48] and Ephesians 5:18[49] are among a number ...

Background. Many patients seeking emergency care are under the influence of alcohol, which in many cases implies a differential diagnostic problem. For this reason early objective alcohol screening is of importance not to falsely assign the medical condition to intake of alcohol and thus secure a correct medical assessment.. Objective. At two emergency departments, demonstrate the feasibility of accurate breath alcohol testing in emergency patients with different levels of cooperation.. Method. Assessment of the correlation and ratio between the venous blood alcohol concentration (BAC) and the breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) measured in adult emergency care patients. The BrAC was measured with a breathalyzer prototype based on infrared spectroscopy, which uses the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) in the exhaled air as a quality indicator.. Result. Eighty-eight patients enrolled (mean 45 years, 53 men, 35 women) performed 201 breath tests in total. For 51% of the patients ...
The effect of acrylamide (79061) on pyridine nucleotide concentrations was studied in male Holtzman-rats. Animals were administered 40 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) per week of acrylamide and were sacrificed when the total cumulative dose was 428 or 668mg/kg. Rats given the lower cumulative dose developed mild symptoms of intoxication characterized by decreased body tone and increased excitabili
BACKGROUND: Subjective perceptions of alcohol intoxication are associated with altered risk for alcohol abuse and dependence. Acute adaptation of these perceptions may influence such risk and may involve genes associated with pleasant perceptions or the relief of anxiety. This study assessed the effect of variation in the GABAA receptor genes GABRG1 and GABRA2 and recent drinking history on the acute adaptation of subjective responses to alcohol. METHODS: One hundred and thirty-two nondependent moderate to heavy drinkers, aged 21 to 27, participated in 2 single-blind, counterbalanced sessions, approximately 1 week apart. One session was an intravenous alcohol clamp, during which breath alcohol concentration was held steady at 60 mg/dl (60 mg%) for 3 hours, and the other an identical session using saline infusion. Subjective perceptions of Intoxication, Enjoyment, Stimulation, Relaxation, Anxiety, Tiredness, and Estimated Number of Drinks were acquired before (baseline), and during the first ...
Since it is not always intuitively obvious which crimes are specific intent crimes, it is important to consult with the attorney. Assault is a general intent crime even though it requires a specific mental state. The distinction was made because this offense too often is associated with intoxication. However, assault with intent to murder is a specific intent crime. If the intent to murder is negated by intoxication or mental illness, then a defendant is found guilty of only assault. Arson is a general intent crime, so it also cannot be negated by intoxication. Murder is a specific intent crime despite there being no further act required. Defendants lacking the specific intent required for murder are found guilty of manslaughter. The distinction between murder and manslaughter developed to prevent individuals who killed another in a drunken brawl from receiving an automatic death penalty. Intoxication itself is no excuse for committing a crime. Since ancient times debate has existed as to ...

The aim of this program evaluation was to examine the feasibility of implementing computer-assisted SBIRT soon after arrest for DWI offenders, during their pre-trial services orientation. The key findings were: (1) Approximately one-half of DWI offenders eligible for the service participated, and offenders who declined to participate were more likely to endorse low-risk alcohol use. (2) The majority of those screened reported at-risk alcohol use patterns, with approximately one-quarter willing to endorse experiencing mental health symptoms at levels requiring further assessment. (3) Clients reported high ratings of usability across all domains examined, with regards to the MATTERS screening tool (ease-of-use, time, aesthetics, and comprehension). (4) There were relatively few minor technical difficulties. (5) The majority of clients reported that the information provided in the personalized feedback report was easy to comprehend, interesting, personally relevant, and likely to increase ...

Most alcoholic beverages contain chemical compounds known as congeners. These chemicals contribute to the taste, smell and appearance of the drink. These compounds can play a role in aggravating the symptoms of a hangover. Research has shown that beverages which contain pure alcohol such as gin or vodka, cause fewer hangover effects. Beverages that contain more congeners, such as whiskey, brandy and red wine are more likely to cause hangover symptoms ...

Asparagus extract contains amino acids and minerals, which may ease alcohol hangover and protect liver cells against toxins, according to a study.
The first case of intoxication on record is that of Noah (Gen. 9:21). The sin of drunkenness is frequently and strongly condemned (Rom. 13:13; 1 Cor. 6:9, 10; Eph. 5:18; 1 Thess. 5:7, 8). The sin of drinking to excess seems to have been not uncommon among the Israelites.. The word is used figuratively, when men are spoken of as being drunk with sorrow, and with the wine of Gods wrath (Isa. 63:6; Jer. 51:57; Ezek. 23:33). To add drunkenness to thirst (Deut. 29:19, A.V.) is a proverbial expression, rendered in the Revised Version to destroy the moist with the dry, i.e., the well-watered equally with the dry land, meaning that the effect of such walking in the imagination of their own hearts would be to destroy one and all. ...
The Iowa Court of Appeals has upheld the first-degree kidnapping conviction of a Cedar Rapids man. Keith Elson was found guilty of the crime after he abducted a nineteen-year-old clerk at knifepoint from the Cedar Rapids convenience store in May of 2010.. Elson took the woman to his apartment where he sexually assaulted her and held her for seven hours. Elsons appeal contended he was too intoxicated to form specific intent to commit the crime.. A toxicologist testified the Elsons blood alcohol level could have been anywhere from .21 to .39, and that blood alcohol level could make a person unable to deliberate or premeditate ones actions.. The Iowa Court of Appeals says evidence that Elson took a knife and rope with him, was watching the store and waited until there were no other customers inside, showed that he had specific intent to commit the assault and that was not hampered by his intoxication.. The Appeals Court says those factors led them to uphold the guilty verdict.. See the full ...
Know the Facts Interactions between alcohol and other substances in the body such as certain medications or illegal drugs increase impairment and make driving more risky. Also see Drugged Driving Alcohol is a substance that reduces the function of the brain, impairing thinking, reasoning and muscle coordination. All these abilities are essential to operating a vehicle safely.. As alcohol levels rise in a persons system, the negative effects on the central nervous system increase, too. Alcohol is absorbed directly through the walls of the stomach and small intestine. Then it passes into the bloodstream where it accumulates until it is metabolized by the liver. Alcohol level is measured by the weight of the alcohol in a certain volume of blood. This is called Blood Alcohol Concentration, or BAC. At a BAC of .08 grams of alcohol per deciliter of blood (g/dL), crash risk increases exponentially. Because of this risk, its illegal in all 50 States, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico to drive ...
With this gadget you can calculate your blood alcohol level (roughly). Different people use different time to get sober, so this is only meant as a funny gadget, not an exact measurement (in fact, it may not be that exact either as it doesnt take the time between the drinks into account).. How it works: The alcohol will add to the water in your body. An adult male consists of 60-80 percent water, and an adult female of 50-70 percent water. (That is why women get drunk quicker than men.) The blood alcohol level will be reduced by about 0.015 percent per hour. And please never drink and drive, even if you only had one beer it will affect your ability to drive safely. ...
Im still in awe of how Im alive. Going away party turned bad for me. Im quite small, and drank a fifth to myself in less than 2 hours. Im still asking questions about what went on that night. I blacked out about an hour into drinking, and can only recall small bits over the next 7 hours. Five hours after I was done drinking, vomiting all over myself, (taking 2 men to drag my lifeless body to the car), and only one severely embarrassing act, my husband drove me home where I proceeded to sleep in the car for an hour before coming to and stumbling out of the car (in my driveway), I guess I didnt know where I was because I walked to the road the moment a cops passed and stopped. I blew a .99 a little over 5 hours after my last drink. The jail I was in had a nurse monitor me very closely, waking me up every 30-45 mins or so to make sure I was okay. I had to ask my husband how they had found out who i was, and he said i spilled off my name and birthday. Surprised me, because I didnt even know ...
