A delegation sent by a postwar Albanian National Assembly that met at Durrës in December 1918 defended Albanian interests at the Paris Peace Conference, but the conference denied Albania official representation. The National Assembly, anxious to keep Albania intact, expressed willingness to accept Italian protection and even an Italian prince as a ruler so long as it would mean Albania did not lose territory.. But in January 1920, at the Paris Peace Conference, negotiators from France, Britain, Italy and Greece agreed to divide Albania among Yugoslavia, Italy, and Greece as a diplomatic expedient aimed at finding a compromise solution to the territorial conflict between Italy and Yugoslavia. The deal (with the Valona territory and areas of south-central Albania given to Italy) was done behind the Albanians backs and in the absence of a United States negotiator.. This deal created huge anti-Italian resentment between many Albanians and in May 1920 the Italians (even because of demobilisation of ...
Albania declared its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1912, but was conquered by Italy in 1939. Communist partisans took over the country in 1944. Albania allied itself first with the USSR (until 1960), and then with China (to 1978). In the early 1990s, Albania ended 46 years of xenophobic Communist rule and established a multiparty democracy. The transition has proven challenging as successive governments have tried to deal with high unemployment, widespread corruption, a dilapidated physical infrastructure, powerful organized crime networks, and combative political opponents. Albania has made progress in its democratic development since first holding multiparty elections in 1991, but deficiencies remain. International observers judged elections to be largely free and fair since the restoration of political stability following the collapse of pyramid schemes in 1997; however, there have been claims of electoral fraud in every one of Albanias post-communist elections. The 2009 general ...

Rally Albania 2021, a marathon race of high-speed cars competing across challenging terrains, is proceeding smoothly according to organizers and broader media coverage. The event started off on June 5th, known also as World Environment Day, in the Lagoon of Narta, committing at the same time an environmental crime.. The Lagoon is of national importance: it is part of the so-called Emerald Network and located in the Vjosa-Narta Protected Landscape, an integral element of the network of protected areas across Albania, where extreme sports are prohibited by virtue of this designation.. The authorities responsible for the protection of Albanias wild territories revealed that they had received no previous notice about the event, but confirmed that the drivers did race inside protected areas.. According to the Rally 2021 organizers, the last phase of the race will take place in the mountain chains that surround Tirana, on June 12. Mali me Gropa-Bizë-Martanesh, a section of this chain, is also a ...
THERE are few better examples of investment penetration for strategic political reasons than the penetration of Albania by Italy during the last decade.(1) Economically, Albania is unattractive. Five centuries of Turkish suzerainty terminated in 1912 with Albanian social organization still based on the tribe or clan, and blood feuds have only lately ceased to be common. It has scanty resources, of which agriculture must be reckoned the most promising,(2) and until recently it has remained isolated from the main stream of modern economic development. Yet this mountainous, poverty-stricken little country with its population of one million has become a bone of contention in international politics, and a glance at the map will show why. From the Bay of Valona near the southern extremity of Albanias Adriatic coast, it is only forty-five miles across the narrow Straits of Otranto to the heel of the Italian boot. Any power which controls the southern portion of Albania has potential control over the ...

On Nov. 7, Albanias High Criminal Court changed the sentences of two Muslim Albanians from prison to house arrest. The detainees, Xhezair Fishti and Medat Hasani, who are Salafists, were arrested in November 2016 by Albanian counter-terrorism units on suspicion of planning an attack on the Israeli national football team, which was scheduled to play Albania on Nov. 12, 2016.. These Salafists were two of some 150 Muslims who the Albanian police detained that month. Albanian authorities, who generally regard Muslims with suspicion, conducted mass arrests and closed the borders with Kosovo and Macedonia. They did this so that Muslim Albanian fans could not attend the football match between Albania and Israel and shout anti-Israeli and pro-Palestinian slogans.. However, out of the 150 people who were detained, four were singled out as terrorist suspects and accused of plotting to attack the Israeli team. This counterterrorism operation was coordinated along with the Kosovar police, which, for its ...
TIRANA, Albania (AP) - Bashkim Fino, who was appointed to shepherd Albania out of almost total chaos when fraudulent investment schemes collapsed 24 years ago and angry crowds looted military installations nationwide, has died. He was 58.. The former prime ministers family and his governing Socialist party said Fino died Monday in a hospital, where he had been treated for several days after contracting COVID-19.. The government declared Monday a day of national mourning, with flags flying at half-staff.. Fino was a trained economist and former mayor of Gjirokastra, 230 kilometers (140 miles) south of the capital, Tirana. He was appointed in 1997 by Albanias president to lead a government of national unity.. The country was on the brink of total anarchy following the collapse of widespread and wildly popular pyramid investment schemes, in which very many Albanians lost their life savings. Fino served for five months until early elections were held which brought the Socialists to power.. He was ...
The average annual growth rate of the Albanian population for the period 1960-90 was 2.4 percent, or approximately three to four times higher than that of other European countries. Population growth was actively encouraged by the government, which deemed it essential for the further strengthening and prosperity of socialist society. Albania had a population of 3,335,000 in July 1991, compared with 2,761,000 in mid-1981 and 1,626,000 in 1960. The most sparsely populated Balkan country until 1965, Albania attained a population density of 111 inhabitants per square kilometer in 1989--the highest in the Balkans. The 1991 growth rate was 1.8 percent. In 1991 Albania had a birth rate of 24 per 1,000, and its death rate had declined from 14 per 1,000 in 1950 to 5 per 1,000. A concomitant of the reduced death rate was an increase in life expectancy. Official Albanian sources indicated that average life expectancy at birth increased from fifty-three years in 1950 to seventy-two years for males and ...
Downloadable (with restrictions)! This article analyses the determinants of inflation in Albania during the transition period. We attempt to explain why Albania was successful in reducing inflation, by the end of 1995, to a level comparable to many countries in the European Union. We discuss the relative importance of monetary, fiscal and external variables, and we highlight the role of remittances by emigrants. Using vector autoregression analysis, we demonstrate how shocks to money growth and remittances affect the subsequent paths of inflation and the exchange rate. Our main conclusion is that, while there are important lessons from the Albanian experience for other ex-communist countries, the presence of large-scale emigration and huge remittance flows makes Albania unique among European countries in transition, in the extent to which these factors aided the anti-inflation programme. However, recent events have demonstrated that political stability and control of the informal financial sector are
So, what does this have to do with Albania, and the lessons that we are learning here? While visiting with a new member of the church this week, I asked her about the attitudes toward work and opportunity here in Albania. Her response was this. They say that it has been 22 years since the end of communism here, but the first 12 years were chaos. We have only had, really, about 10 years of democracy here. She and I both agreed that it is early in the history of democracy for Albania. Many of them have already left for America or other countries, seeking the same independence and opportunity that our ancestors were looking for when they first migrated to America. It is our hope that opportunity will come to Albania-for all Albanian people, so they can stay here and build up the land that they all love so much. May God help them to do it. May we stand ready to assist in any way that we can ...

As governments seek to expand access to quality health care services, policy makers in many countries are confronting the problem of informal payments to medical personnel. The aim of this study was to help health planners in Albania understand informal payments occurring in government health facilities. Researchers used in-depth interviews and focus groups with 131 general public and provider informants in three districts. The results suggest that factors promoting informal payments in Albania include perceived low salaries of health staff; a belief that good health is worth any price; the desire to get better service; the fear of being denied treatment; and the tradition of giving a gift to express gratitude. Members of the general public also believe informal payments create uncertainties and anxiety during the care-seeking process, while providers perceive that informal payments harm their professional reputation, induce unnecessary medical interventions, and create discontinuity of care. ...

The A A gill article from The Sunday Times was written as if the guy has a personal vendetta against Albania and every Albanian.Having visited the country recently and having ongoing regular contact with Albanians from various backgrounds - rich and poor, muslim and catholic, educated and just street wise, Ghegs and Tosks -I became angry as I read each sentence. I was sitting confortably in my English suburban garden drinking tea probably packed into boxes by hardworking Albanians in some hot and dusty UK packing plant. How dare AA Gill be so rude about Albania and its people. It also made me sad, because the writer just went on and on throwing insults with absolutely no substatiation. Who was this writer with the arrogant style A A Gill. Having researched him a bit, I find that Anthony A Gill makes his living by being very controversial. Hes Scottish and is primarily a restaurant and tv critic. If its any consolation to Albanians reading this, he doesnt like the English either!! I have ...
Albania was the first European country that became a victim of the invasion of fascist Italy in April 1939. Due to the disparity of the Albanian forces their resistance lasted only a few days. King Zogu went into exile, and the country was incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy. Under the auspices of the Italians a collaborative Albanian government was headed by Shefqet Verlaci. After the collapse of Yugoslaviathe so-called Greater Albania was annexed by the Italians; they occupied a part of Kosovo. Some time earlier, in 1940, the first structure of anti-Italian resistance began to emerge . From 1942 the Communists played an increasingly important role in the ntiItalian resistance . In response to the growth of the Communist influence at the end of 1942 the Albanian independence environment set up an underground organization called Balli Kombetar. Some of its leaders attempted to work out a „modus vivendi with the Italian occupiers that ultimately resulted in the signing of the neutrality ...

For the crime of being an Albanian, a seven-year-old girl can not get a visa to travel to Italy once a month for a blood transfusion that will keep her alive. This is the story of one of my work colleagues, Iris*. Her daughter, once a pretty, happy girl, is unrecognizably bloated from the heavy medications she must now take in order to live. If Iris had permission to travel to Italy, for two days once a month, Iriss daughter would not have to take these disfiguring medications. Her parents live in Italy, in a city in the north, and doctors in a hospital there have agreed to treat the little girl, which they have certified in writing. Not good enough, the Italian embassy says. Hospitals in Albania do not have the equipment or the expertise to treat the little girl and, thus, Iris wants to bring her to Italy for treatment. She has no intention on settling there because, as she told me, her family, another daughter and her husband, are here in Albania.. Forget trying to get treatment in Greece; ...

The rapporteur declared that he had received many complaints for the public administration, which he had passed to the Ombudsman.. The ambitious reform for the public administration in Albania is absolutely vital, because it makes way to all other reforms. For this reason, I have given more attention to this reform on the draft-report. The implementation of the new Law for Civilian Service has started. It aims to reduce corruption and make a more depoliticized and more professional administration. I have received many letters from Albanian citizens who complain about the public administration, and I have spoken with the Ombudsman for how important it is to follow them and take actions. Corruption and organized crime need to be fought in all levels, with successful efforts that involve all institutions in a more strategic approach. For starting the accession negotiations, Albania must support stable reforms, especially as regards the fight against corruption. Things must have positive and ...

To determine the genetic architecture of trout in Albania, 87 individuals were collected from 19 riverine and lacustrine sites in Albania, FYROM and Greece. All individuals were analyzed for sequence variation in the mtDNA control region. Among fourteen haplotypes detected, four previously unpublished haplotypes, bearing a close relationship to haplotypes of the Adriatic and marmoratus lineages of Salmo trutta, were revealed. Ten previously described haplotypes, characteristic of S. ohridanus, S. letnica and the Adriatic and Mediterranean lineages of S. trutta, were also detected. Haplotypes detected in this study were placed in a well supported branch of S. ohridanus, and a cluster of Mediterranean - Adriatic - marmoratus haplotypes, which were further delimited into three subdivisions of Mediterranean, marmoratus, and a previously non-described formation of four Adriatic haplotypes (Balkan cluster). Haplotypes of the Balkan cluster and the other Adriatic haplotypes, do not represent a contiguous

Why treat the missions in the Amazon differently? Why not work to raise the people up or to find the real causes of lack of native priestly vocations among the Amazonians? Why have Pentecostal and Evangelical Protestant missions been so successful in Brazil, for example, which has seen a drop in the number of Catholics to 64.4%? This downward trend has been ongoing since the 1960s.. Before Vatican II, the Jesuit missionaries sought solutions, which did not break with Church tradition and teaching, to address the dire need for clergy among the unreachable and completely isolated tribes in northern Albania and Kosovo by founding The Jesuit Traveling Mission. The main reason for the establishment of The Jesuit Traveling Mission was the clergy shortage in the vast territory of the Albanian highlands. If some people [in the Amazon] might not see a priest for a year as reported by Crux on October 9, 2019, in 1888 the Catholic tribes of Albania and Kosovo had not seen a priest in ten years. And, ...

On August 22, 2007, Risperdal was approved as the only drug agent available for treatment of schizophrenia in youth ages 13 17; it was also approved that same day for treatment of bipolar disorder in youth and children ages 10 17, joining lithium. Risperidone contains the functional groups of benzisoxazole and piperidine as part of its molecular structure. In 2003 the FDA approved risperidone for the short-term treatment of the mixed and manic states associated with bipolar disorder. In 2006 the FDA approved risperidone for the treatment of irritability in children and adolescents with autism. The FDA`s decision was based in part on a study of autistic children with severe and enduring problems of violent meltdowns, aggression, and self-injury; risperidone is not recommended for autistic children with mild aggression and explosive behavior without an enduring pattern. Like other atypical antipsychotics, risperidone has also been used off-label for the treatment of anxiety disorders, such as ...
The use of the name Crna Gora or Black Mountain (Montenegro) began in the 13th century in reference to a highland region in the Serbian province of Zeta. The later medieval state of Zeta maintained its existence until 1496 when Montenegro finally fell under Ottoman rule. Over subsequent centuries, Montenegro managed to maintain a level of autonomy within the Ottoman Empire. From the 16th to 19th centuries, Montenegro was a theocracy ruled by a series of bishop princes; in 1852, it transformed into a secular principality. Montenegro was recognized as an independent sovereign principality at the Congress of Berlin in 1878. After World War I, during which Montenegro fought on the side of the Allies, Montenegro was absorbed by the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, which became the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1929; at the conclusion of World War II, it became a constituent republic of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. When the latter dissolved in 1992, Montenegro federated with Serbia, ...

Statistical Concept and Methodology: Data for access to electricity are collected among different sources: mostly data from nationally representative household surveys (including national censuses) were used. Survey sources include Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) and Living Standards Measurement Surveys (LSMS), Multi-Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS), the World Health Survey (WHS), other nationally developed and implemented surveys, and various government agencies (for example, ministries of energy and utilities). Given the low frequency and the regional distribution of some surveys, a number of countries have gaps in available data. To develop the historical evolution and starting point of electrification rates, a simple modeling approach was adopted to fill in the missing data points - around 1990, around 2000, and around 2010. Therefore, a country can have a continuum of zero to three data points. There are 42 countries with zero data point and the weighted regional average was used as an ...
A recent article in Balkan Insight penned by Fjori Sinoruka and Mare Knezević explores the position of Albanian women migrants in Croatia. In Struggling to be Seen: In Croatia, Albanian Women Fight Prejudice, Patriarchal Norms, the authors cite Belgium-based journalist Augustin Palokaj who previously lived in Croatia. He describes how Croatia was a window for discriminated Albanians during late Yugoslav socialism yet life was not easy for the women of Albanian families who settled in Croatia with many working long hours in the home or in small family businesses facing prejudice and encountering difficulties in language acquisition.. Palokaj adds, There is mockery and ridicule, which does not give them an incentive to socialise and integrate more into Croatian society. [1]. Sinoruka and Knezevićs contribution is a rare reflection on the position of Albanian women in Croatia. It ends on a cautiously optimistic note, quoting Croatian MP Ermina Lekaj Prljaskaj who believes that younger ...

Muhammad Ali Pasha al-Masud ibn Agha (Ottoman Turkish: محمد علی پاشا المسعود بن آغا‎; Arabic: محمد علي باشا‎ / ALA-LC: Muḥammad Alī Bāshā; Albanian: Mehmet Ali Pasha; Turkish: Kavalalı Mehmet Ali Paşa; 4 March 1769 - 2 August 1849) was an Ottoman Albanian commander in the Ottoman army, who rose to the rank of Pasha, and became Wāli, and self-declared Khedive of Egypt and Sudan with the Ottomans temporary approval. Though not a modern nationalist, he is regarded as the founder of modern Egypt because of the dramatic reforms in the military, economic and cultural spheres that he instituted. He also ruled Levantine territories outside Egypt. The dynasty that he established would rule Lower Egypt, Upper Egypt and Sudan until the Egyptian Revolution of 1952 led by Muhammad Naguib and Gamal Abdel Nasser. Muhammad Ali was born in Kavala, in Macedonia, of an Albanian family originally from Korçë, Albania. He was the second son of a tobacco and shipping ...
In March and April 1981, large-scale disturbances broke out in Yugoslavias autonomous Province of Kosovo, which is part of the Republic of Serbia but populated mainly by people who look upon themselves as Albanians. The riots were spearheaded by students from the provinces university in the city of Pristina. The disorders originated in the cafeteria, allegedly as a demonstration protesting the poor quality of the food served to the students. Within a few days demonstrations not only occurred in other parts of Pristina, but in several other Kosovo cities as well. More important, however, was the fact that they took place on a political cast, with slogans that suggested disaffection with Yugoslavia and a desire to unite with Albania. The riots were put down with an indeterminate loss of life.. Although the problem of Kosovo is complex and complicated, for about one-half of Yugoslavias population, the Serbs, it is not. To them Kosovo is holy ground. It is the cradle of their nationhood, when ...

As a lovely, sparkling snow falls steadily over Chicagoland on this last day of 2013, December 31st, it seems most appropriate to pay tribute to those Serb military forces and civilians who embarked on a now legendary exodus from Serbia in the late fall and winter of 1915/1916 southward through Montenegro and Albania to the coast of the Adriatic Sea. The Great Serbian Retreat, also known as the Albanian Golgotha, was an extraordinary human event in the history of the 20th Century. Though it was a retreat, seen by the Serbian commanders such as Field Marshal Radomir Putnik who ordered it as the only viable alternative to complete annihilation in the wake of a devastating combined attack by the Central Powers of Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Bulgaria against Serbia that began in October of 1915, this retreat would ultimately result in the salvation and resurrection of what was left of the Serbian Army. This vanquished Serbian army would rise again to fight another day, and this time it would be ...
