While information on aircraft noise is limited, the studies and data GAO reviewed suggest that aircraft cabin and cockpit noise levels likely do not exceed the noise exposure standard established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). None of the studies GAO reviewed, which included eight that measured noise in the cabin and four that measured noise in the cockpit, found levels that clearly exceeded the OSHA standard, though two of the studies found that noise over long durations in certain types of aircraft may reach the more restrictive exposure limit published by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). OSHA and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have received few complaints from crewmembers related to aircraft noise levels. For example, since assuming authority to enforce its noise standard in the cabin, OSHA has received two complaints related to ambient aircraft noise out of more than 600 complaints related to commercial aviation. No ...
A passive acoustic method to locate moving sound sources is applied to maneuvering aircraft. The advantages of the method are that it is suitable for all kinds of aircraft, not only propeller-driven, and is not restricted to low height above the ground. Its applicability could be, for instance, to supplement aircraft noise monitoring systems or to supervise small airports activities. The method is based on the relation between the relative Doppler effect observed from a set of at least seven microphone receivers, distributed in the airport surroundings, and the aircraft position and speed. The method requires knowledge of the position of the aircraft at the start of takeoff. The ambiguity function is used to calculate the relative Doppler stretch of the spectrum of the sound between pairs of microphones. The results of applying the ambiguity function are the inputs to a system of equations that relates the aircraft position and speed to the relative Doppler frequency stretches. This system of ...

After several delays, United Airlines has finally resumed services to New Yorks John F. Kennedy International Airport. The services are being resumed around six years after the airline bid farewell to the JFK airport. This airport is the sixth busiest airport in the United States. It also the biggest airport in the Northeast. The airline is making a comeback with flagship flights to Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO). Both the flights will be operated with a Boeing 767-300. According to the information shared by United Airlines, it will operate out of Terminal 7 of the John F. Kennedy International Airport. United Airlines had left JFK in October 2015. The airline apparently took the decision to concentrate more on international and premium transcontinental services. However, a few years later the company accepted that the decision was a mistake. In 2017, Chief executive officer Scott Kirby - who was then the president of the airline - had described the move as a mistake. At an employee ...

Sir Tim Clark, the long-serving president of Emirates Airline who delayed his planned retirement to see the carrier through the Coronavirus pandemic, has told an aviation conference that he now believes that the airline wont receive any Boeing 777X aircraft until after the first quarter in 2024.. Emirates has a total of 126 next-generation Boeing 777X on order. The 777X currently has two variants known as the 777-8 and 777-9. The bulk of the Dubai-based airlines order is made up of the longer 777-9, along with 25 longer-range but smaller capacity 777-8 aircraft.. Once the airline starts taking delivery of the 777X they will be used to replace Emirates existing fleet of first-generation 777s and will complement the double-deck Airbus A380. Emirates also have Boeing 787 Dreamliners and Airbus A350 aircraft on order.. Emirates originally intended to take delivery of its first 777X in 2020 but development delays and now the COVID-19 pandemic have pushed the timeline back by at least three years. ...
Aims: Aircraft noise causes endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Transportation noise increases the incidence of coronary artery disease, hypertension, and stroke. The underlying mechanisms are not well understood. Herein, we investigated effects of phagocyte-type NADPH oxidase (Nox2) knockout and different noise protocols (around-the-clock, sleep/awake phase noise) on vascular and cerebral complications in mice. Methods and results: C57BL/6j and Nox2-/- (gp91phox-/-) mice were exposed to aircraft noise (maximum sound level of 85 dB(A), average sound pressure level of 72 dB(A)) around-the-clock or during sleep/awake phases for 1, 2, and 4 days. Adverse effects of around-the-clock noise on the vasculature and brain were mostly prevented by Nox2 deficiency. Around-the-clock aircraft noise of the mice caused the most pronounced vascular effects and dysregulation of Foxo3/circadian clock as revealed by next generation sequencing (NGS), suggesting impaired sleep quality in ...

Flying a plane safely through the sky… with passengers or freight on board… takes more than excellent vision… airline and commercial pilots need quick reaction times and excellent problem-solving abilities. These pilots fly and navigate airplanes, helicopters, and other aircraft. Pilots run through detailed checks before every flight, including checking fuel supplies, aircraft weight limit, cargo balance, weather conditions, and aircraft condition. Tiny cockpits contain the flight crew for the duration of flight; strong teamwork and sharing of flight duties keep the pilot and copilot alert and rested. Pilots communicate frequently with air traffic controllers on the ground, from submitting their flight plan before take-off, to checking in during a flight, and receiving instructions for landing and handling storms or emergencies. Airline pilots fly public, scheduled flights. They may fly long-distance routes, and be away from home for extended periods. Those routes, along with mandatory ...

According to medical evidence so far, a passengers risk of in-flight transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is likely to be low or extremely low. The reasons for the apparently low rate of in-flight transmission are not known yet but could encompass a combination of the lack of face-to-face contact, and the physical barriers provided by seat backs, along with the characteristics of cabin air flow.. In commercial aircraft the cabin air is replaced on average every 3 minutes. Air circulation patterns aboard standard commercial aircraft are side-to-side with air entering the cabin from overhead, circulating across the aircraft and exiting near the floor. There is little longitudinal (front-to-back) airflow. The cabin air is a mix of recirculated and fresh outside air. The outside air is assumed to be sterile at typical cruising altitudes. All air passes through high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters that filter ,99,97% of particles in the air, including bacteria and virus. The resulting air quality ...

Aims: To develop infectious (live/dead) enveloped virus test indicators and response surface methodology (RSM) models that evaluate survival of an enveloped ribonucleic acid (RNA) virus on contaminated aircraft materials after exposure to hot, humid air (HHA).Methods and Results: Enveloped RNA bacteriophage Phi6 (Φ6) was dried on wiring insulation, aircraft performance coating (APC), polypropylene, and nylon at ≥ 8 log10 plaque-forming units (PFU) test coupon−1. Only 2.4 log10 inactivation was measured on APC at 70°Celsius (°C), 5% relative humidity (RH) after 24 h. In contrast, HHA RSM models showed a 90% probability of a 7 log10 inactivation at ≥63°C, 90% RH after 1 h, and decontamination kinetics were similar across different materials. HHA decontamination of C-130 and C-17 aircraft showed >7 log10 and ≥5.9 log10 inactivation of enveloped virus on 100 and 110 test indicators, respectively, with a 1-h treatment, excluding ramp-up and ramp-down times. Conclusions: Enveloped RNA virus test
Airport parking services are probably the most extensive of any international airport worldwide. London Heathrow is second to the JFK as the worlds busiest airport, car parking at Heathrow airport can be expected to be as busy as the airport itself. Translating into a huge number of people using Heathrow, and you can be sure that, like you, a large proportion of them are using their car to get there.. One may probably feel that finding a parking space at Heathrow is like trying to get a ticket for the FA Cup Final and that you have to get there six hours before your flight just to park! Well, you can call in advance and reserve your space, so enabling you to set off and arrive at the airport at a time that suits you, and not be worried by the frantic pre-flight demand for spaces. Pre-booking Airport parking services is a very common option that many savvy travelers take. In fact, even if you are seeking a space simply to see your loved ones off on vacation, or for any other reason, you can ...
Air travel has become an important part of modern life. Many more women are now employed in jobs that involve frequent flying, and, in fact, most flight attendants are women of reproductive age. In parallel, with the average age of starting a family steadily increasing, many more pregnant women have medical conditions that might be exacerbated by air travel.. Naturally, the most compelling studies on reproductive risks originate from research in flight attendants. In a cross-sectional survey among current and former flight attendants, Lauria et al 1 did not detect higher rates of miscarriage associated with active work. They did, however, find higher rates of menstrual irregularities among current flight attendants and 60% higher rates of infertility. 1 The lack of risk of spontaneous abortions was corroborated by others. 2 However, flight attendants who experienced spontaneous abortions reported working substantially more flight hours (74 hours per month) than did flight attendants who had live ...
Currently a mixture of cryogenic and compressed storage looks the most attractive and has been tested widely.. The first (partially) hydrogen powered aircraft was the LZ-127 Zeppelin which used a mixture of gasses of equal mass per volume as air (Blaugas) to power its engines.. Tupolev designed and flew the Tu-155, the first hydrogen-powered heavier-than-air aircraft, in 1988. The results showed that the principle worked, but could not compete with kerosene.. Currently, several demonstrators are in operation, but none with the hope of widespread application - as it stands, binding hydrogen chemically to carbon will still give the best way of storage (liquid and unpressurized) for aviation.. Hydrogen becomes the best source of energy only when combustion speed is critical, such as in supersonic combustion ramjets (scramjets).. ...

The third runway, which the Commonwealth government commenced development of in 1989 and completed in 1994, remained controversial because of increased aircraft movements, especially over many inner suburbs. In 1995 No Aircraft Noise was formed to contest the 1995 New South Wales state election. The party did not win a seat in parliament, but came close in the electorate of Marrickville.[19] It also contested the 1996 Australian federal election. In 1995, the Australian Parliament passed the Sydney Airport Curfew Act 1995, which limits the operating hours of the airport. This was done in an effort to curb complaints about aircraft noise. The curfew prevents aircraft from taking off or landing between the hours of 11 pm and 6 am. A limited number of scheduled and approved take-offs and landings are permitted respectively in the shoulder periods of 11 pm to midnight and 5 am to 6 am. The Act does not stop all aircraft movements overnight, but limits movements by restricting the types of ...

An airline cabin crew member has today been charged after cocaine with an estimated street value of £98,000 was seized at Gatwick Airport.
The accident occurred during the Experimental Aircraft Associations Airventure 2010 fly-in convention. Because of the high density of aircraft operations during the fly-in, the Federal Aviation Administration implemented special air traffic control procedures to accommodate traffic demand and maximize runway capacity. Arriving aircraft were issued landing instructions and clearances by a tower controller using a specified tower radio frequency. Departing aircraft were handled by another team of controllers operating on a separate radio frequency that was associated with a mobile operations unit located near the runway. Air traffic control data indicated that the accident airplane established contact with the tower controller and entered a left traffic pattern for runway 18R. As the accident airplane was turning from downwind to base leg, the controller handling departures cleared a Piper Cub for an immediate takeoff and angled departure (a procedure used by slower aircraft to clear the runway ...

Aircraft and runway deicers are used during cold weather at many of the worlds airports to facilitate safe air travel. Propylene glycol-, ethylene glycol-, and urea-based deicers are known to have very high biochemical oxygen demand. At General Mitchell International Airport (GMIA) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, deicer application, water chemistry, and dissolved oxygen (DO) data were collected for two deicing seasons in order to evaluate and define premanagement water quality parameters prior to the implementation of a glycol management program. Calculations using stream-monitoring data during a controlled release of deicer provided an estimate of 0.8/d for the first-order decay rate constant, substantially higher than published laboratory test results. For eight precipitation events with deicing activities, between 2.4 and 99% of propylene and ethylene glycol applied to aircraft was delivered directly to receiving streams. The percentage of glycol runoff during an event increased with increasing storm
Increase in air travel across the globe and rising focus on passenger and staff safety would fuel demand for various placards & signs. The industry is influenced by the directives of the various regulatory agencies such as the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) - the national aviation authority of the United States, EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency), etc. Stringent rules and guidelines enforced by these authorities will positively affect the industry. However, concerns over carbon footprints may prove to be a challenge. Download Full Research Report on Aircraft Placards & Signs Industry @ https://www.radiantinsights.com/research/global-aircraft-placards-and-signs-industry-2016 Placards are required to be displayed in the interior as well as the exterior of an aircraft. While most placards are in English, they may also be in the native languages of individual countries. Placards & signs differ as per civil and military uses. They also vary according to the size and type of aircraft. In ...
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has authority to approve air carrier requests to deploy less-than-lethal weapons, including electric stun devices, onboard commercial aircraft to thwart an attack. Since the terrorist attacks of 2001, one air carrier received approval to deploy electric stun devices. To address concerns regarding reports of injuries after the use of these devices and to ensure that the impacts of these devices onboard aircraft have been fully evaluated, this report answers the following: (1) What analyses has the federal government conducted to assess the safety and effectiveness of these devices onboard commercial aircraft? (2) What controls does TSA have in place to help ensure uniform and timely review of air carrier requests to deploy these devices onboard commercial aircraft? The Transportation Security Administration and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have conducted reviews addressing the effect of electric stun devices on aircraft. Plus, various federal

Cabin crew working for Philippine Airlines will wear personal protective gears on board, the uniforms are designed by Filipino couturier Edwin Tan. According to the designer, the protective suits will have the fit and function that will allow cabin crew to perform their duties. Edwin Tan says: The detail is a subtle branding for the airline. We didnt have time to print or embroider so we came up with the idea of mimicking or reworking the flag logo of Philippine Airlines.. We used a non-porous material for the personal protective equipment (PPE). A material with substantial weight to give it a better fall than generic PPEs, he added.. The cabin crew uniform for flights this season will showcase various looks, designs and colors. Eventually, a single, branded look will fill up our flights this season.. ...
It was completed very quickly, at a time when Jeddah had a narrow geographic area and the city was not as big as it is today.Malat said that King Abdulaziz International Airport created a revolution in aviation in the Middle East and, more specifically, Saudi Arabian Airlines.By virtue of my work in the field of aircraft maintenance, I can tell you that aircraft maintenance and engineering were operating from within the airport and had the spaces that helped them perform their tasks effectively and efficiently. He said the big leap forward in technical capabilities offered new horizons for creativity, innovation and development, especially in aircraft maintenance.Countries in the region with airports that today offer a role model in terms of efficiency, beauty and quality of service consider the old King Abdulaziz International Airport as a landmark that cannot be matched, he said. These countries used to have only small local airports that were not to be compared to the old airport, which ...

We thank Dr Rafnsson for valuable comments on our paper. Rafnsson finds our policy implications surprising. In the light of present evidence, we do not find further measures justified for reducing radiation exposure among cabin crew. The justification for this view is the fact that exposure limits common for all radiation workers also apply for the cabin crew. Dose monitoring indicates that the cosmic radiation doses are within the exposure limits. We see no reason to depart from the general radiation protection principles.. Cohort studies have shown an excess risk of breast cancer in cabin crew, in particular among those with long employment, with 1.5-3.4-fold incidence compared with the general population.1 Nevertheless, the radiation doses received are low and the expected effect based on previous literature is very small, with relative risk well below 1.1.2 Neither previous studies nor our study have been able to identify the cause for the excess incidence of breast cancer. Lack of ...
American Airlines said on Thursday that its regional carrier PSA had temporarily removed most of its aircraft from service and canceled flights while it works with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to address a maintenance issue. Out of an abundance of caution, PSA Airlines has temporarily removed most of its aircraft from service in order to complete a necessary, standard inspection on the nose gear door, a spokeswoman said. She said the issue was discovered earlier on Thursday, prompting the cancellation of 230 flights. Inspections for more than 90 aircraft have been done and the remainder will be completed before Friday. American Airlines said it was working through an operational plan for Friday and would know more later tonight. Any cancellations will be on account of crew availability, the spokeswoman said. PSA Airlines removed a number of its Bombardier regional jets from service after discovering a maintenance item that required immediate attention, the FAA said in a ...

A relatively new feature on the automotive scene, the cabin air filter is often overlooked in regular vehicle maintenance. Thats unfortunate, because the cabin air filter is just as important to the passengers as the engine air filter is to the vehicle. A cabin filter processes the air that enters the passenger compartment via the vehicles heating and air conditioning system, increasing passenger comfort by trapping particulates, pollen, and other irritants. For people with allergies and other sensitivities to airborne agents, the cabin filter represents a significant advance. Replacing the cabin air filter at the recommended interval, or sooner in areas where soot or pollen are prevalent, allows the passengers to breathe cleaner, fresher air - which makes any journey more enjoyable.. DENSO First Time Fit® replacement cabin filters are engineered for optimal airflow and filtration, meeting all OE requirements to the letter. Up to five layers of filter media are used to trap impurities down to ...
A malfunctioning seal in the gear-reduction box of a turboprop aircraft engine could allow oil to enter the turbines compressor section, which is the source of bleed air used to pressurize the cabin. Oil, or its degradation products, could have a deleterious effect on crew and passengers. A series of tests sponsored by the National Transportation Safety Board had examined the possibility that contaminated bleed air might contain toxic products identifiable by chemical analysis, but none of the gases for which they analyzed were present in toxic concentrations. However, the approach did not eliminate the possible presence of an additional component with significant animal toxicity. The research reported here examined the toxicity of thermal degradation products from aircraft lubricating oils and some related products. Rats were exposed to smoke from these products and relative toxicity evaluated in terms of time-to-incapacitation and time-to-death. The carbon monoxide (CO) content of the smoke ...

In January 2015, Charles de Gaulle began being prepared for exercises in the Indian Ocean. In late February, the carrier and its battle group entered the Persian Gulf to participate in Opération Chammal against Islamic State militants in Iraq.[49] France was the first country to join the American-led intervention and has 15 fighters, a patrol aircraft, and refueling aircraft based on land in neighboring countries. The addition of Charles de Gaulle added up to another 30 aircraft to Frances commitment to operations.[50][51] The carrier battle group arrived in the Persian Gulf on 15 February 2015 and began launching airstrikes on 22 February; this occurred seven weeks after the Charlie Hebdo attacks, as France vowed to be more responsive to jihadist terrorism. Sailing off the north coast of Bahrain, the carriers 12 Rafale and 9 Super Étendard fighters could reach targets in half the time it would take French fighters based in the United Arab Emirates.[52] Charles de Gaulle left the Persian ...
At any given time, there are up to 5,000 aircraft in flight across the United States. Air Traffic Controllers direct the air traffic flow for approximately 200,000 aircraft each day. Controllers must manage and monitor all aspects of planes in the air and on the runway in a fast-paced and high pressure environment. Pilots rely on timely and accurate information from Air Traffic Controllers, and if they do not receive it, the results can be deadly. Although Air Traffic Controller error in these intense situations is understandable, it is by no means excusable. If you have been injured, or a loved one was injured or killed, in an aviation accident caused by Air Traffic Controller error, it is essential to contact an experienced aviation law firm with attorneys who are experienced in aviation disasters, as soon as possible.. Causes of Air Traffic Controller Error. Air Traffic Controller error can be caused by numerous factors. The following are examples of some of the most common:. ...

In 1997, American Airlines became the first United States air carrier to place automatic external defibrillators on its fleet of 700 aircraft. AEDs are thus available to give immediate coronary care to in-flight heart-attack victims. Since seconds count, many lives have been saved by restoring the natural rhythm of their heart beats. The airline was the first public entity in the United States to do mass deployment of AEDs, and trained over 22,000 flight attendants on the use of the defibrillator. On 18 Feb 1998, their first passenger was saved when he collapsed on an aircraft after rushing to catch a connecting flight. As unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) prevail in commercial and first responder applications, the need for safer and more consistent recovery methods is growing. Standard aircraft landing manoeuvres are only possible with a suitable runway which is often unavailable outside of military applications. Alternative recovery approaches can be either contained within the aircraft, ie. parachute or be setup on the ground ie. net landing. By integrating the recovery system into the vehicle, the flight preparation can be streamlined due to the fact that setting up recovering devices is no longer required. The goal of this thesis is to investigate the application of an autonomous vertical landing capability for fixed wing UAVs using articulated motors to enter vertical flight. Using an experimental UAV design, the dynamics of the problem were investigated using recorded flight data. Implementing a decoupled control approach, the aircraft was stabilized to maintain a horizontal hover. Through the ...
Maureen Ihua-Maduenyi The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria on Thursday met with the Airline Operators of Nigeria and the Airline Operating Committee to find solutions to service gaps at airports across the country. The new Managing Director of FAAN, Capt Rabiu Yadudu, said the meeting became necessary to re-affirm the agencys commitment to the improvement of services at airports, and to solicit airline operators cooperation and support. FAAN is already taking bold steps in addressing gaps in our processes and procedures by collaborating with the International Civil Aviation Organisation, through its Airport Service Quality programme, he said. A decade of bumper profits hasnt cushioned the US airline industry from the coronavirus pandemic. Analysts are predicting many face bankruptcy in the coming months unless the government steps in.. Right now, its their workers who are feeling the full force of the industrys crisis and they are terrified.. We dont know how we are going to provide for our families, said a flight attendant with United Airlines in Kentucky, who wished to remain anonymous. Working in the industry right now is very scary. There are a lot of unknowns. News about the coronavirus is changing so rapidly the information we are receiving is outdated by the time it is disseminated.. Major US airlines experienced their 10th consecutive year of profits in 2019 before the coronavirus outbreak hit the US. The collapse in travel that has followed is jeopardizing the jobs of 750,000 people directly employed by US airlines. In 2009, Japan Airlines suffered steep financial losses, despite remaining Asias largest airline by revenue.[41] As a result, the airline embarked on staff cuts and route cutbacks in an effort to reduce costs.[41][42] The carrier also received a ¥100 billion through capital injection and credit from the Japanese government as part of the proposed bankruptcy.[43] In September 2009, Japans Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism formed a task force aimed at aiding a corporate turnaround at JAL, which examined various cost-cutting and strategic partnership proposals.[44]. One proposal considered was to merge JAL with ANA, which would create a single larger international airline and replace Japan Airlines International; however, media reports suggested that this proposal would be opposed by ANA given its comparatively better financial performance as an independent carrier.[44] The task force also examined possible partnerships with foreign carriers.[44]. After weeks of ...
