One hundred and thirty-seven jet pilots were studied to obtain information regarding their vertigo experiences in jet aircraft. Individual interviews and a check list of vertigo experiences were used. It was found that 96 per cent of the pilots had experienced vertigo while flying jet aircraft and that the nature of vertigo was essentially the same as that found during flight in propeller driven aircraft. The most frequent illusary experience was found to involve confusions with regard to the attitude and motion of the aircraft. Current methods for determining the impact of aircraft noise on annoyance and sleep disturbance are based on energetic quantities neglecting the dynamic character of the sound. To obtain a more complete representation of annoyance, it would be helpful to predict the audible aircraft sound and determine the impact of the aircraft sound on people. In a related project at Empa, sonAIR, recordings were made of aircraft taking off and landing. These recordings were made at several positions and with several microphones simultaneously. Combined with cockpit data, flight path information and an inverse sound propagation model, this gives the possibility to determine the emission as function of aircraft conditions and observer angle. The purpose of this study was to investigate health and annoyance reactions to change in chronic exposure to aircraft noise on a sample of South African children. It was the intention of this study to examine if effects of noise on health and annoyance can be demonstrated. If so, whether such effects persist over time, or whether such effects are reversible after the cessation of exposure to noise. A cohort of 732 children with a mean age of 11.1 (range = 8-14) participated at baseline measurements in Wave 1 (2009), and 649 (mean age = 12.3; range = 9-15) and 174 (mean age = 13.3; range = 10-16) children were reassessed in Wave 2 (2010) and Wave 3 (2011) after the relocation of the airport, respectively. The findings revealed that the children who were exposed to chronic aircraft noise continued to experience significantly higher annoyance than their counterparts in all the waves at school, and only in Wave 1 and Wave 2 at home. Embodiments of the invention can include the ability to monitor engine conditions as well as control electrical functions such as the fuel boost pump, alternator field, battery contactor and other important electrical devices. The Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) is a ground-based network of Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) sites around the globe, where the column abundances of CO2, CH4, N2O, CO and O2 are measured. CO2 is constrained with a precision better than 0.25% (1-σ). To achieve a similarly high accuracy, calibration to World Meteorological Organization (WMO) standards is required. This paper introduces the first aircraft calibration campaign of five European TCCON sites and a mobile FTS instrument. A series of WMO standards in-situ profiles were obtained over European TCCON sites via aircraft and compared with retrievals of CO2 column amounts from the TCCON instruments. The results of the campaign show that the FTS measurements are consistently biased 1.1% ± 0.2% low with respect to WMO standards, in agreement with previous TCCON calibration campaigns. I have always loved the 737, just because it really does its job very well every time I fly on it.. The aircraft sequenced to land ahead of VOM on the ILS was considerably slower than VOM. To ensure separation between the aircraft on final for runway 29, at 1247 and with the aircraft 16 NM (30 km) south-east of Howard Springs, the Approach East controller cancelled the approach procedure issued to the flight crew of VOM and radar vectored (see the section titled Controller responsibilities) the aircraft right on to a heading of 360°. When the crew of VOM were issued with the radar vector, the preceding slower aircraft was 3 NM (6 km) east of Howard Springs and 14 NM (26 km) north-west of VOM, with a ground speed of 120 kt. In recent tests on the pressures occurring on the envelope and control surfaces of the naval airship C-7, it was noted that the pressures on the nose of the airship, while flying in level circling flight, were symmetrically distributed. Such a condition can only occur when the nose of the airship is pointed directly into the wind, and to accomplish this in circling flight, the axis of the airship must then be parallel to the direction of the motion of the nose. The question was raised as to whether the same conditions occur generally on all airships in circling flight. It appears that airships flying in a constant, level, circling flight path will generally head very closely into the wind, and any deviation will be so slight that the distribution of pressure over the nose will be but slightly, if at all, changed from a symmetrical distribution.
