One hundred and thirty-seven jet pilots were studied to obtain information regarding their vertigo experiences in jet aircraft. Individual interviews and a check list of vertigo experiences were used. It was found that 96 per cent of the pilots had experienced vertigo while flying jet aircraft and that the nature of vertigo was essentially the same as that found during flight in propeller driven aircraft. The most frequent illusary experience was found to involve confusions with regard to the attitude and motion of the aircraft. The jet pilots believe that certain unique aspects of jet flight may contribute to difficulties in spatial orientation. (Author)(*VERTIGO
The four engine aircraft was transferred from Kisangani to Mykolaiv, Ukraine, for maintenance purposes. Two enroute stops were scheduled in Entebbe and Luxor. Ar 0417LT, the crew was cleared for takeoff. The aircraft started rolling on runway 02 for takeoff but it kept rolling on it till it reached its end. The aircraft continued rolling in the sand drifting from the runway centerline to the right, crossing a service road and eventually crashing into a military zone located 500 metres from the runway end. The aircraft crashed into one of the buildings inside the military unit causing complete destruction of the building. The right wing also crashed into another building putting the aircraft on fire and forcing the aircraft to turn right. The aircraft kept moving forward the military unit fence (next to Tiba-Luxor road) and stopped there, crashing in its way into oil barrel. The accident resulted in the total destruction and fire of the aircraft and the fatality of its crew but no further injuries ...
Aircraft noise is a major issue in urban areas and is one of the research topics within the FP7 SONORUS project. Current methods for determining the impact of aircraft noise on annoyance and sleep disturbance are based on energetic quantities neglecting the dynamic character of the sound. To obtain a more complete representation of annoyance, it would be helpful to predict the audible aircraft sound and determine the impact of the aircraft sound on people. In a related project at Empa, sonAIR, recordings were made of aircraft taking off and landing. These recordings were made at several positions and with several microphones simultaneously. Combined with cockpit data, flight path information and an inverse sound propagation model, this gives the possibility to determine the emission as function of aircraft conditions and observer angle. An inverse sound propagation model is used to estimate the emission in the time-domain. The obtained signal corresponds to the immission of a microphone flying along
Today there was an incident with the Airlander aircraft at Cardington airfield. The aircraft was not flying at the time of the incident. Our initial assessment is that the aircraft broke free from its mooring mast for reasons that will be investigated. The aircraft has a safety system which operates automatically in circumstances of the aircraft breaking free of its mast, and is designed to rip open the hull and deflate the aircraft. This is a safety feature to ensure our aircraft minimises any potential damage to its surroundings in these circumstances. The aircraft is now deflated and secure on the edge of the airfield. The fuel and helium inside the Airlander have been made safe.. A member of HAV staff sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for assessment as a precaution. She has since been discharged. A separate member of staff also sustained minor injuries while dealing with the aftermath of the incident.. A number of local roads and a local footpath were temporarily closed off ...

The purpose of this study was to investigate health and annoyance reactions to change in chronic exposure to aircraft noise on a sample of South African children. It was the intention of this study to examine if effects of noise on health and annoyance can be demonstrated. If so, whether such effects persist over time, or whether such effects are reversible after the cessation of exposure to noise. A cohort of 732 children with a mean age of 11.1 (range = 8-14) participated at baseline measurements in Wave 1 (2009), and 649 (mean age = 12.3; range = 9-15) and 174 (mean age = 13.3; range = 10-16) children were reassessed in Wave 2 (2010) and Wave 3 (2011) after the relocation of the airport, respectively. The findings revealed that the children who were exposed to chronic aircraft noise continued to experience significantly higher annoyance than their counterparts in all the waves at school, and only in Wave 1 and Wave 2 at home. Aircraft noise exposure did not have adverse effects on the childrens self

In flight, any aircraft will rotate about its center of gravity, a point which is the average location of the mass of the aircraft. We can define a three dimensional coordinate system through the center of gravity with each axis of this coordinate system perpendicular to the other two axes. We can then define the orientation of the aircraft by the amount of rotation of the parts of the aircraft along these principal axes. The pitch axis is perpendicular to the aircraft centerline and lies in the plane of the wings. A pitch motion is an up or down movement of the nose of the aircraft as shown in the animation. The pitching motion is being caused by the deflection of the elevator of this aircraft. The elevator is a hinged section at the rear of the horizontal stabilizer. There is usually an elevator on each side of the vertical stabilizer. The elevators work in pairs; when the right elevator goes up, the left elevator also goes up.. As described on the shape effects slide, changing the angle of ...

An aircraft lavatory is a small room on an aircraft with a toilet and sink. An early aircraft fitted with a toilet was the 1921 Caproni Ca.60, However, it crashed on its second flight and never saw service. The Handley Page H.P.42 airliner, designed in 1928, was fitted with toilets near the center of the aircraft. The British Supermarine Stranraer flying boat, which first flew in 1934, was fitted with a toilet that was open to the air. When the lid was lifted in flight, airflow produced a whistling noise that led to the aircraft being nicknamed the Whistling Shithouse. The Short Sunderland flying boat, which saw military service from 1938 to 1967, was comparatively well equipped, carrying a porcelain flush toilet. During World War 2, large bomber aircraft, such as the American Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and the British Avro Lancaster, carried chemical toilets (basically a bucket with seat and cover, see bucket toilet); in British use, they were called Elsans after the company that ...

For those who are interested in purchasing their own aircraft, chances are that theyve already experienced one of the previous charter options and have decided that full aircraft ownership is their preferred mode of travel. Owning your own aircraft comes with an almost infinite set of options and choices that allow you to dictate when, why, how, and where youd like to fly. From picking the color of your paint to making travel decisions on the fly, aircraft ownership is the pinnacle of flying private. Even most regulatory agencies allow more concessions for aircraft owners that include more relaxed regulations, access to a smaller niche airports, and even specific tax advantages. However, as they say, with great power comes great responsibility. Unlike the other options listed, aircraft owners ultimately bear the sole responsibility of managing and operating their new asset. This can be achieved by setting up a dedicated flight department or arranging for a management company to assist you with ...
The aircraft gives its occupants the sensation of weightlessness by following a parabolic flight path relative to the center of the Earth.[7] While following this path, the aircraft and its payload are in free fall at certain points of its flight path. The aircraft is used in this way to demonstrate to astronauts what it is like to orbit the Earth. During this time the aircraft does not exert any ground reaction force on its contents, causing the sensation of weightlessness. Initially, the aircraft climbs with a pitch angle of 45 degrees using engine thrust and elevator controls. The sensation of weightlessness is achieved by reducing thrust and lowering the nose to maintain a neutral, or zero lift, configuration such that the aircraft follows a ballistic trajectory, with engine thrust exactly compensating for drag. Weightlessness begins while ascending and lasts all the way up-and-over the hump, until the craft reaches a downward pitch angle of around 30 degrees. At this point, the craft is ...
Some of these conflicts are irreconcilable and would leave operators with no ability to comply. For example, under 14 C. F.R. § 91.119 concerning minimum safe altitudes, no person may operate an aircraft below certain altitudes except for takeoff or landing. Over non-congested areas, the minimum is 500 feet AGL. However, in Advisory Circular AC-91-57, which constitutes the only FAA guidance concerning the altitude of model aircraft flight, model aircraft operators are instructed: Do not fly model aircraft higher than 400 feet above the surface. If model aircraft were interchangeable with aircraft for purposes of existing FARs, they could never be flown at all because they must, according to FAA guidance, fly below 400 feet while also flying above 500 feet.. Many people who fly regularly are familiar with the temperature irregularities on board aircraft. You might be sweating and overheated before takeoff only to find yourself shivering and reaching for a blanket mid-flight. It is uncomfortable, for sure, but most just shrug it off as an inconvenience that comes with flying. Far too often, however, temperatures on board aircraft can rise or dip to dangerous levels, presenting a serious health and safety risk for passengers and flight crewmembers alike. Shockingly, there are no federal regulations governing internal cabin temperature. This oversight has gone on for too long, and we call on the Department of Transportation (DOT) to issue reasonable and meaningful regulations on in-cabin temperatures.. There have been several well-publicized incidents when the health of passengers or crewmembers has been threatened by extreme temperatures. In June of 2017, an infant overheated and required hospitalization while on the tarmac at Denver International ...

An analytical approach is essential for the estimation of the requirements of aerodynamic and aerostatic lift for a hybrid buoyant aircraft. Such aircraft have two different modules to balance the weight of aircraft; aerostatic module and aerodynamic module. Both these modules are to be treated separately for estimation of the mass budget of propulsion systems and required power. In the present work, existing relationships of aircraft and airship are reviewed for its further application for these modules. Limitations of such relationships are also discussed and they provide a starting point for better understanding of design methodology of such aircraft.. ...
While information on aircraft noise is limited, the studies and data GAO reviewed suggest that aircraft cabin and cockpit noise levels likely do not exceed the noise exposure standard established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). None of the studies GAO reviewed, which included eight that measured noise in the cabin and four that measured noise in the cockpit, found levels that clearly exceeded the OSHA standard, though two of the studies found that noise over long durations in certain types of aircraft may reach the more restrictive exposure limit published by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). OSHA and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have received few complaints from crewmembers related to aircraft noise levels. For example, since assuming authority to enforce its noise standard in the cabin, OSHA has received two complaints related to ambient aircraft noise out of more than 600 complaints related to commercial aviation. A passive acoustic method to locate moving sound sources is applied to maneuvering aircraft. The advantages of the method are that it is suitable for all kinds of aircraft, not only propeller-driven, and is not restricted to low height above the ground. Its applicability could be, for instance, to supplement aircraft noise monitoring systems or to supervise small airports activities. The method is based on the relation between the relative Doppler effect observed from a set of at least seven microphone receivers, distributed in the airport surroundings, and the aircraft position and speed. The method requires knowledge of the position of the aircraft at the start of takeoff. The ambiguity function is used to calculate the relative Doppler stretch of the spectrum of the sound between pairs of microphones. The results of applying the ambiguity function are the inputs to a system of equations that relates the aircraft position and speed to the relative Doppler frequency stretches. This system of ...

Sir Tim Clark, the long-serving president of Emirates Airline who delayed his planned retirement to see the carrier through the Coronavirus pandemic, has told an aviation conference that he now believes that the airline wont receive any Boeing 777X aircraft until after the first quarter in 2024.. Emirates has a total of 126 next-generation Boeing 777X on order. The 777X currently has two variants known as the 777-8 and 777-9. The bulk of the Dubai-based airlines order is made up of the longer 777-9, along with 25 longer-range but smaller capacity 777-8 aircraft.. Once the airline starts taking delivery of the 777X they will be used to replace Emirates existing fleet of first-generation 777s and will complement the double-deck Airbus A380. Emirates also have Boeing 787 Dreamliners and Airbus A350 aircraft on order.. Emirates originally intended to take delivery of its first 777X in 2020 but development delays and now the COVID-19 pandemic have pushed the timeline back by at least three years. ...
Aims: Aircraft noise causes endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Transportation noise increases the incidence of coronary artery disease, hypertension, and stroke. The underlying mechanisms are not well understood. Herein, we investigated effects of phagocyte-type NADPH oxidase (Nox2) knockout and different noise protocols (around-the-clock, sleep/awake phase noise) on vascular and cerebral complications in mice. Methods and results: C57BL/6j and Nox2-/- (gp91phox-/-) mice were exposed to aircraft noise (maximum sound level of 85 dB(A), average sound pressure level of 72 dB(A)) around-the-clock or during sleep/awake phases for 1, 2, and 4 days. Adverse effects of around-the-clock noise on the vasculature and brain were mostly prevented by Nox2 deficiency. Around-the-clock aircraft noise of the mice caused the most pronounced vascular effects and dysregulation of Foxo3/circadian clock as revealed by next generation sequencing (NGS), suggesting impaired sleep quality in ...

All assigned trips will begin and end in the assigned domicile.. SkyWest flight attendants on reserve will not exceed 19 duty days per month.. ...
In 1997 a mother and daughter who had recently travelled from Luxembourg to Iceland, and who had never been in an area of endemicity, became affected with malaria. They lived in a village 1 2 km east of Luxembourg s airport. In 1999 a husband and wife travelled by air from Luxembourg to Scotland via Brussels on 30 May and returned to Luxembourg on 18 June. The woman fell ill in late July and P. falciparum was confirmed by blood smear. A blood smear taken from the husband was also positive. A third patient, who had not travelled by air, lived in a village 3 4 km east of Luxembourg airport. All five cases occurred during periods of high summer temperatures, which may have allowed imported mosquitoes to survive. Severe thrombocytopenia was a common feature in these patients (40).. Baggage malaria. Table 2 includes cases of baggage malaria in which infected vectors were evidently brought in baggage to sites, sometimes at a considerable distance from the airport of arrival, and transmitted the ...

The Air Force Research Laboratory wants to find out how virtual, augmented and mixed (VAM) reality technologies can be leveraged to improve aircraft maintenance.. In the private sector, VAM tools have been used in training and manufacturing and maintenance industries to reduce quality errors and increase throughput.. Following the lead of advanced manufacturing companies, AFRL wants to move away from printed maintenance instructions and investigate solutions like projecting scaled visualizations of the task onto the machinery being serviced.. But before such technology can be developed, AFRL wants information about four specific areas:. Content development. Cost-effective solutions for creating the magnitude computer-generated visualizations aircraft preventative and remedial maintenance will require innovative crowdsourcing of augmented reality (AR) content development by airmen. The content must be able to be developed by non-programmers and not be dependent on digital models of legacy ...
Flying a plane safely through the sky… with passengers or freight on board… takes more than excellent vision… airline and commercial pilots need quick reaction times and excellent problem-solving abilities. These pilots fly and navigate airplanes, helicopters, and other aircraft. Pilots run through detailed checks before every flight, including checking fuel supplies, aircraft weight limit, cargo balance, weather conditions, and aircraft condition. Tiny cockpits contain the flight crew for the duration of flight; strong teamwork and sharing of flight duties keep the pilot and copilot alert and rested. Pilots communicate frequently with air traffic controllers on the ground, from submitting their flight plan before take-off, to checking in during a flight, and receiving instructions for landing and handling storms or emergencies. Airline pilots fly public, scheduled flights. They may fly long-distance routes, and be away from home for extended periods. Those routes, along with mandatory ...

According to medical evidence so far, a passengers risk of in-flight transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is likely to be low or extremely low. The reasons for the apparently low rate of in-flight transmission are not known yet but could encompass a combination of the lack of face-to-face contact, and the physical barriers provided by seat backs, along with the characteristics of cabin air flow.. In commercial aircraft the cabin air is replaced on average every 3 minutes. Air circulation patterns aboard standard commercial aircraft are side-to-side with air entering the cabin from overhead, circulating across the aircraft and exiting near the floor. There is little longitudinal (front-to-back) airflow. The cabin air is a mix of recirculated and fresh outside air. The outside air is assumed to be sterile at typical cruising altitudes. All air passes through high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters that filter ,99,97% of particles in the air, including bacteria and virus. The resulting air quality ...

Aims: To develop infectious (live/dead) enveloped virus test indicators and response surface methodology (RSM) models that evaluate survival of an enveloped ribonucleic acid (RNA) virus on contaminated aircraft materials after exposure to hot, humid air (HHA).Methods and Results: Enveloped RNA bacteriophage Phi6 (Φ6) was dried on wiring insulation, aircraft performance coating (APC), polypropylene, and nylon at ≥ 8 log10 plaque-forming units (PFU) test coupon−1. Only 2.4 log10 inactivation was measured on APC at 70°Celsius (°C), 5% relative humidity (RH) after 24 h. In contrast, HHA RSM models showed a 90% probability of a 7 log10 inactivation at ≥63°C, 90% RH after 1 h, and decontamination kinetics were similar across different materials. HHA decontamination of C-130 and C-17 aircraft showed >7 log10 and ≥5.9 log10 inactivation of enveloped virus on 100 and 110 test indicators, respectively, with a 1-h treatment, excluding ramp-up and ramp-down times. Conclusions: Enveloped RNA virus test
Airport parking services are probably the most extensive of any international airport worldwide. London Heathrow is second to the JFK as the worlds busiest airport, car parking at Heathrow airport can be expected to be as busy as the airport itself. Translating into a huge number of people using Heathrow, and you can be sure that, like you, a large proportion of them are using their car to get there.. One may probably feel that finding a parking space at Heathrow is like trying to get a ticket for the FA Cup Final and that you have to get there six hours before your flight just to park! Well, you can call in advance and reserve your space, so enabling you to set off and arrive at the airport at a time that suits you, and not be worried by the frantic pre-flight demand for spaces. Pre-booking Airport parking services is a very common option that many savvy travelers take. In fact, even if you are seeking a space simply to see your loved ones off on vacation, or for any other reason, you can ...
Air travel has become an important part of modern life. Many more women are now employed in jobs that involve frequent flying, and, in fact, most flight attendants are women of reproductive age. In parallel, with the average age of starting a family steadily increasing, many more pregnant women have medical conditions that might be exacerbated by air travel.. Naturally, the most compelling studies on reproductive risks originate from research in flight attendants. In a cross-sectional survey among current and former flight attendants, Lauria et al 1 did not detect higher rates of miscarriage associated with active work. They did, however, find higher rates of menstrual irregularities among current flight attendants and 60% higher rates of infertility. 1 The lack of risk of spontaneous abortions was corroborated by others. 2 However, flight attendants who experienced spontaneous abortions reported working substantially more flight hours (74 hours per month) than did flight attendants who had live ...
Currently a mixture of cryogenic and compressed storage looks the most attractive and has been tested widely.. The first (partially) hydrogen powered aircraft was the LZ-127 Zeppelin which used a mixture of gasses of equal mass per volume as air (Blaugas) to power its engines.. Tupolev designed and flew the Tu-155, the first hydrogen-powered heavier-than-air aircraft, in 1988. The results showed that the principle worked, but could not compete with kerosene.. Currently, several demonstrators are in operation, but none with the hope of widespread application - as it stands, binding hydrogen chemically to carbon will still give the best way of storage (liquid and unpressurized) for aviation.. Hydrogen becomes the best source of energy only when combustion speed is critical, such as in supersonic combustion ramjets (scramjets).. ...
It also authenticated past reports of robbery incidents of some aircraft on the taxiways while waiting to take off. These reports were denied variously by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and other concerned agencies.. Runway Incursion. Passengers, who were already settled in the aircraft and waiting for it to take off were rattled when they saw Adamu, who clutched a bag, which the petrified passengers suspected could contain a bomb. According to reports, the passengers shouted to draw the attention of the crew as Adamu meandered his way from the aircraft engine to the wing, possible struggling to access inside the Azman Air Boeing 737aircraft.. Reports also indicated that the man kept walking on and around the aircraft for over 20 minutes before the Aviation Security (AVSEC) officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) could be alerted and they moved in to apprehend Adamu and put him in custody.. Industry experts said Adamu who entered the engine of the aircraft ...

The third runway, which the Commonwealth government commenced development of in 1989 and completed in 1994, remained controversial because of increased aircraft movements, especially over many inner suburbs. In 1995 No Aircraft Noise was formed to contest the 1995 New South Wales state election. The party did not win a seat in parliament, but came close in the electorate of Marrickville.[19] It also contested the 1996 Australian federal election. In 1995, the Australian Parliament passed the Sydney Airport Curfew Act 1995, which limits the operating hours of the airport. This was done in an effort to curb complaints about aircraft noise. The curfew prevents aircraft from taking off or landing between the hours of 11 pm and 6 am. A limited number of scheduled and approved take-offs and landings are permitted respectively in the shoulder periods of 11 pm to midnight and 5 am to 6 am. The Act does not stop all aircraft movements overnight, but limits movements by restricting the types of ...
