Part I - Fluorinated Compounds A method has been developed for the extraction, concentration, and determination of two unique fluorinated compounds from the sediments of Lake Ontario. These compounds originated from a common industrial landfill, and have been carried to Lake Ontario by the Niagara River. Sediment samples from the Mississauga basin of Lake Ontario have been evaluated for these compounds and a depositional trend was established. The sediments were extracted by accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) and then underwent clean-up, fractionation, solvent exchange, and were concentrated by reduction under nitrogen gas. The concentrated extracts were analyzed by gas chromatography - electron capture negative ionization - mass spectrometry. The depositional profile determined here is reflective of the operation of the landfill and shows that these compounds are still found at concentrations well above background levels. Electric field distributions and discharge properties of rod-rod contact electrodes were studied under the condition of DBD for the steady generation of atmospheric pressure glow discharge plasma (APGD) in air. We found that under the effect of the initial electrons generated in a nanometer-scale gap, the rod-rod cross-contact electrodes yielded APGD plasma in air. Regarding the rod-rod cross-contact electrodes, increasing the working voltage expanded the strong electric field area of the gas gap so that both discharge area and discharge power increased, and the increase in the number of contact points kept the initial discharge voltage unchanged and caused an increase in the plasma discharge area and discharge power. We report TOFMS investigations on the effects of hydrogen added to a dc GD argon plasma, in detail over the most likely concentration range occurring in analytical work (0-0.10% v/v), together with an overview to 0.8% v/v; typical GD-OES discharge conditions were used. Many previous studies on the effects of hydrogen in analytical GD-MS used much higher hydrogen concentrations. In this paper, we report for the first time the hydrogen effect on relative ion signal intensities of matrices, plasma and added gas, for very low but analytically important hydrogen concentrations. We investigate the behavior of doubly charged argon ions (Ar++), dimer ions (Cu2+, Fe2+, Ti2+, Ar2+) and polyatomic ions (ArH+, CuH+, FeH+, TiH+), which can play important roles in plasma processes. The results are presented of an intensive study of a railway tunnel environment under conditions of fully dieselized train traffic. Atmospheric sampling tests were conducted around the clock on an B-HR working shift basis for three days. More than 2000 observations were made to determine the fluctuations and range of occurrence of contaminant concentration under a variety of traffic conditions. There were no abnormal health effects on participants during exposure in the tunnel atmosphere, with the exception of minor cases of eye and throat irritation. However, nitrogen dioxide, aldehydes, smoke, and particulate matter attained high levels during periods of peak train activity. I dont have much experience of bosniak cysts either but my surgery for cancer was delayed for a few weeks as they were concerned about my potentially having sleep apnoea because of my weight. I was tested and found to have the condition and then had to successfully learn how to sleep using a variable positive air pressure machine that blows air into my lungs if I stop breathing when I sleep. I had to take the machine with me when I went for my surgery and was advised that rather than being taken to a surgical recovery ward after my operation I would be going to intensive care where I could be more closely monitored. I understand that the rationale behind this was that if I had breathing difficulties during the operation I could die very quickly whilst not operating on the kidney cancer it would take a number of years for it to become terminal..
