A field experiment was conducted during the summer season of 2000 at the Main Research Station, University of Agricultural Sciences, Hebbal, Bangalore, Karnataka, India, to determine the effects of irrigation and fertilizer rates on the soil plant water status and yield of baby maize (Zea mays). Treatments comprised: seven irrigation schedules and two fertilizer levels. The maximum husked (11.28 t/ha), dehusked (2.99 t/ha) and fodder yields (24.12 t/ha) of baby maize were recorded with irrigation at 1.0 IW:CPE ratio throughout the crop growth stages, which were significantly superior over irrigation at 0.75 IW:CPE ratio during 41 DAS to harvest and throughout the crop growth stages. Irrigation at 0.75 IW:CPE ratio during 10-25 DAS recorded higher water use efficiency of 29.76 kg/ha-mm, with a total water requirement of 361.6 mm. The potential of increasing disease problems through the use of recycled irrigation water in horticultural operations is a serious concern, yet basic research on waterborne plant pathogens in Virginia is lacking. In this work seasonal fluctuations and locations of Pythiaceae in a recycled water irrigation system at a container nursery were determined. Pythium spp. were recovered more frequently and in greater numbers than Phytophthora spp. Species of Phytophthora recovered in filtering assays were identified as P. capsici, P. citricola, P. citrophthora, P. cryptogea, P. drechsleri, and P. nicotianae. P. cryptogea and P. drechsleri were the only Phytophthora spp. recovered from baits placed on the surface of the irrigation reservoir, whereas a greater diversity of species was recovered from baits placed at depths. The knowledge about toxic levels of toxic heavy metals in irrigation water is very scarce and quite varied. This work aimed to evaluate the concentrations of toxic heavy metals in the lake of the Experimental Farm UEMG, Passos-MG Unit. The toxic heavy metals evaluated were Cadmium (Cd), Chromium (Cr) and Lead (Pb). The lagoon was divided into ten strategic points for sampling, each point being sampled in triplicate. The pH of the water and the concentrations of toxic heavy metals present were evaluated. PH measurements were performed on the water in natura, being measured before and after filtration. Values ranging from 6.25 to 7.75 were found. For the determinations of Cd, Cr, and Pb, an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer was used. The samples were treated with acid digestion. The values of toxic heavy metals found were: Cadmium: 0.727 mg/L at 0.754 mg/L; Chromium: 0.177 mg/L at 0.256 mg/L and Lead: 0.023 mg/L at 0.081 mg/L. Seed yield in soybean (Glycine max L.) is a function of moisture availability and is highly related to environmental conditions such as rainfall and irrigation. This study aimed to investigate differences among soybean lines and varieties in terms of phenology, above ground dry matter, seed yield, and yield components under different moisture regimes conditions, and to analyze the relationship between phenological characteristics and seed yield. Forty soybean genotypes were grown in two field experiments exposed to different irrigation regimes for three growing seasons (2010-2012). Results showed that variation in the duration of phenological stages was a determinant factor in increasing seed yield. There was a positive linear relationship between days to flowering and number of pods per plant, explaining 79 and 74% of the variation in seed yield under control and stress conditions, respectively. In Tunisia, water scarcity is the major problem for horticulture production. Less than 7% of total agriculture area can be irrigated and in most cases with bad water quality. For these reasons, improving irrigation efficiency is an important challenge. Potassium is considered as a major element responsible for fruit quality but also for reducing drought effect on plants. The objective of this research was to study the combined effect of potassium and irrigation treatments on apricot yield and quality. Two irrigation treatments (100 and 50% ETc) and three potassium nutrition rates (50, 100 and 200% of tree requirement) were assessed in an apricot orchard of Ouerdi in North Tunisia for two years. This project assessed currently used culture based media for the detection of E. coli in irrigation waters used in Arizona and California, and will present recommendations towards the most reliable media for the evaluation of irrigation waters used for produce. Currently, no microbial indicator standards exist for irrigation waters used for produce production in the United States. The produce industry suggests that the recreational water standard guideline (126 E. coli/100 ml) established by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) be used. An irrigation system for use during endoscopic or minimally invasive surgery is shown. Both vacuum and a pressurized irrigation fluid are continually provided to a trumpet valve for immediate use during surgery. A pump that provides the pressurized irrigation fluid has a reusable motor, but a disposable head that can be replaced between procedures. A control circuit automatically reduces the voltage being supplied to the pump if there had not been a request for irrigation fluid for a first time period. If a second time period, which is longer than the first time period, passes and (a) there is no demand for irrigation and (b) the voltage to the pump has not been reduced, either the voltage to the pump will be reduced or the pump shut OFF. The irrigation system is provided in kit form with parts having to be replaced between procedures contained therein.
Background This study was conducted in Bura irrigation scheme in Tana River County and the pastoral area in Ijara, Garissa County in the eastern Kenya to establish the knowledge, attitude and practices on malaria transmission, control and management, and determine malaria prevalence and the associated risk factors. Methods A cross sectional survey design that involved 493 randomly selected people from 334 households was used between November and December 2013. All the randomly selected people were screened for malaria parasites using rapid diagnostic test (RDT)-Carestart™ malaria HRP2 (pf) kit. A questionnaire was administered to determine potential risk factors and perceptions on malaria exposure within a period of 2 months prior to the survey. Two logistic regression models were fitted to the data; one used the RDT results while the other used data from the questionnaire survey. Daily evapotranspiration fluxes over the semi-arid Catania Plain area (Eastern Sicily, Italy) were evaluated using remotely sensed data from Landsat Thematic Mapper TM5 images. A one-source parameterization of the surface sensible heat flux exchange using satellite surface temperature has been used. The transfer of sensible and latent heat is described by aerodynamic resistance and surface resistance. Required model inputs are brightness, temperature, fractional vegetation cover or leaf area index, albedo, crop height, roughness lengths, net radiation, air temperature, air humidity and wind speed. The Dombecks use cover crops on irrigated edible beans, corn silage and potato crops. They follow the University of Minnesota Nutrient Best Management Practices for corn and edible beans, are reducing tillage and deferring tillage to spring. In addition, they have installed buffers to address the water resource concerns. The Dombecks farm operations join 447 farm operations in Minnesota who have achieved Water Quality Certification status representing 260,720 acres. We applied two process-based models in a hedgerow olive orchard with the aim of understanding the limitations and mechanisms behind the control of transpiration in olive trees under drip irrigation. One model is based on the biophysics of water flow through the porous media of soil and xylem. The other is a hydromechanical model based on the observed dependence of stomatal aperture on whole-plant and epidermis water relations. Assessment was done under actual field conditions with urban vegetable farmers in Ghana. Trials were arranged in completely randomized block design and done both in the dry and wet seasons. Seven hundred and twenty-six lettuce samples and 36 water samples were analysed for thermotolerant coliforms and helminth eggs. On average, 0.65 log units for indicator thermotolerant coliforms and 0.4 helminth eggs per 100 g of lettuce were removed on each non-irrigated day from lettuce in the dry season. This corresponded to a daily loss of 1.4 tonnes / ha of fresh weight of lettuce. As an input for exposure analysis to make risk estimates, the decay coefficient, k, for thermotolerant coliforms was 0.66 / day for the wet season and 1.49 / day for the dry season.
