We have carried out a follow-up study of the expression and production of these cytokines, as well as of cells expressing these cytokines during the course of active EAE in Dark Agouti (DA) rats. As a result, IL-17, but not IFN-gamma expression and production had the peak value in draining lymph nodes (DLN) during the induction phase of the disease, and in spinal cords (SC) at the onset of clinical signs of the disease, and then declined toward the resolution of the disease. The Smithsonians National Zoo is mourning the loss of a young male agouti named Macadamia, who died Aug. 10 during veterinary treatment. Initial exam suggested potential neck and or head injury. Due to the habit of running quickly around the habitat, self-induced trauma is suspected. According to animal care staff, Macadamias death is unrelated to his brief escape July 13. A final pathology report will provide more information in the coming weeks. Macadamia arrived at the Zoo a few months ago and was recently introduced to his mate, Hazelnut, who remains on exhibit.
