Illustration Works/Getty Images). The rich arent just getting richer, but wealthy older Americans are noticeably better-off than their counterparts from three decades ago in several areas like income, employment, home ownership and housing values.. It may be no surprise that older Americans are wealthier than younger ones. But a new study from Pew Research Center analyzed the economic well-being of current older and younger adults to those in the past and found that the age-based wealth gap skyrocketed 47:1 in 2009 compared to 10:1 in 1984.. In 2009, the median net worth of households headed by adults aged 65 and older was 42 percent more than the same age group in 1984. In contrast, the net worth of households headed by an adult under 35 in 2009 was 68 percent less than the same age group in 1984.. "These age-based gaps widened significantly during the sour economy of recent years, but all key trends are several decades old, indicating that they are also linked to long-term demographic, social ...

Downloadable! This paper proposes the use of optimal grouping methods for determining the various age groups within a population. The cutoff ages for these groups, such as the age from which an individual is considered to be an older person, are then endogenous variables that depend on the entire population age distribution at any given moment. This method is first applied to the age distribution of the United States and subsequently to a group of 12 industrialized countries. The cutoff ages as well as the main indicators of aging are calculated.

Probably because when treating it as continuous they only look for linear regression.. When categorizing in buckets, they probably do an ANOVA. This technique posits that the average does vary per category exactly as measured, and asks the question: If I tell you the category, how much is the variance of your data reduced? If the variance falls a lot (relatively to what it was), it means theres a statistically significant effect between the category and your variable.. And, in their defense, they cant really go fishing for different continuous relationships once they have the data, as thatd reduce their statistical power.. Of interest too is the number of adjustable parameters of the model:. If instead of four age categories you use, say, four hundred, you end up splitting each doctor into one category. The predictive power of that model is greatest, with very good statistical significance, but you have achieved no insight at all.. Similarly when taking age as continuous; if instead of a ...
When a very old patient is admitted to the ICU, we note that age is a risk factor for poor outcomes from virtually every disease. However, reaching an advanced age also says something about the characteristics of the patient, which we may forget.. It is a truism that upon reaching middle age or thereabouts, most patients stop behaving like their calendar age, medically speaking, and start to instead resemble their state of health. There are 50-year-olds who look 100, and 90-year-olds who look 70. We understand this, and when we admit a 60-year-old man with chronic diseases of multiple organs, we acknowledge they have nothing in common with a person of the same age who still runs marathons. Indeed, most of those comorbid individuals do not survive to extreme old age; there are not many 90-year-olds with uncontrolled diabetes, CHF, renal failure, and so on.. Consider the consequences of this. In many ways, very elderly patients (over 85, say-certainly in their 90s and above) are the healthiest ...

BACKGROUND: Nearly all studies have suggested that the use of oral contraceptives (OC) is not associated with the aggregate risk of breast cancer diagnosed in women aged 20-54 years. Because of age-specific differences in the breast cancer-parity relationship and because of age-specific differences in other breast cancer risk factors, the Centers for Disease Control reexamined data from the Cancer and Steroid Hormone Study (CASH) to assess whether OC use has different effects on the risk of breast cancer at different ages of diagnosis. METHODS: This population-based case-control study was designed to examine the relationship between the use of OC and the risk of breast, ovarian, and endometrial cancer. CASH was conducted in eight geographic areas in the United States during 1980-1982. All participants were interviewed at home with a pretested standardized questionnaire including a calendar of life events and a photograph book of all pills marketed in the United States. RESULTS: We found that the

We incorporated behavioral and computational modeling techniques to examine age-based differences in strategy use in two four-choice decision-making tasks. Healthy older (aged 60-82 years) and younger adults (aged 18-23 years) performed one of two decision-making tasks that differed in the degree to which rewards for each option depended on the choices made on previous trials. In the choice-independent task rewards for each choice were not affected by the sequence of previous choices that had been made. In contrast, in the choice-dependent task rewards for each option were based on how often each option had been chosen in the past. We compared the fits of a model that assumes the use of a win-stay-lose-shift (WSLS) heuristic to make decisions, to the fits of a reinforcement-learning (RL) model that compared expected reward values for each option to make decisions. Younger adults were best fit by the RL model, while older adults showed significantly more evidence of being best fit by the WSLS heuristic

Background: Acute lung injury (ALI) is a significant source of morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients. Age is a major determinant of clinical outcome in ALI. The increased ALI-associated mortality in the older population suggests that there are age-dependent alterations in the responses to pulmonary challenge. The objective of this observational study was to evaluate age-dependent differences in the acute (within 6 hours) immunological and physiological responses of the heart and lung, to pulmonary challenge, that could result in increased severity. Methods: Male C57Bl/6 mice (young: 2-3 months, old: 18-20 months) were challenged intratracheally with cell wall components from Gram-positive bacteria (lipoteichoic acid and peptidoglycan). After 6 hours, both biochemical and physiological consequences of the challenge were assessed. Alveolar infiltration of inflammatory cells and protein, airspace and blood cytokines, cardiac function and myocardial proteasome activity were determined. Results:
This study examined stopping and performance adjustments in four age groups (M ages: 8, 12, 21, and 76 years). All participants performed on three tasks, a standard two-choice task and the same task in which stop-signal trials were inserted requiring either the suppression of the response activated by the choice stimulus (global stop task) or the suppression of the response when one stop signal was presented but not when the other stop signal occurred (selective stop task). The results showed that global stopping was faster than selective stopping in all age groups. Global stopping matured more rapidly than selective stopping. The developmental gain in stopping was considerably more pronounced compared to the loss observed during senescence. All age groups slowed the response on trials without a stop signal in the stop task compared to trials in the choice task, the elderly in particular. In addition, all age groups slowed on trials following stop-signal trials, except the elderly who did not slow

The increasing incidence of and interest in hepatitis in the last decade is clearly discernible from the constantly rising volume of literature on the subject. In the past several years we have encountered numerous cases of jaundice in various age groups in which the correct diagnosis became apparent after a brief survey, including various laboratory procedures in conjunction with a short period of clinical observation. In several cases, however, the history and the laboratory studies left the clinical picture sufficiently confused as to necessitate more involved diagnostic procedures, such as cholangiography, liver biopsy and even exploratory laparotomy.. These patients presented ...

The low number of incorrect identifications, combined with the absence of any correct ones probably means that the risk in the dataset is low enough to be considered suitable for "open data". However, it might even be deemed too cautious with disclosure control being applied too strictly. The ideal situation is to have a fair number of incorrect identifications and very few (not necessarily nil) correct identifications. For this example it was decided to reattempt intruder testing, but to use eight age bands instead of four age bands; results are shown in Table A5.. The question is then one of risk appetite. The level of risk that one would normally take with an open dataset (and therefore to be publicly available) is usually very low. Always remember that it would be perfectly legal for an intruder or researcher to attempt to identify an individual and to claim to have made a correct identification. It is therefore important for a data provider to have a strategy in place for that instance. ...

With regard to the generational thing, Im not convinced there are any meaningful boundaries beyond 1965 or so. I mean, look at the graph on this page. It spikes around 1947, then stays high for ten years, then drops down to a low-lying plateau starting at about 1975 or so. From then on, its basically flat. I think this need to categorize people into specific age groups beyond that point is just trying to fit the facts into a preconceived idea of there being distinct generations, which seems unduly influenced by the boomers. If you come from a well-defined age cohort, you might assume there will always be well-defined age cohorts. To me, there are two main groups: boomers and post-boomers. And the only reason I would draw a distinction between those two groups is the outsize role the former has had on the economy, culture, and the media. Which has been frustrating to have to grow up with, but it makes me realize that someday my generation (loosely defined as those born between 1965 and 2000) ...
Meta-analysis can be used to examine differences in treatment effects across trials; however, the fact that randomised trials are included in meta-analyses does not mean that comparisons between trials are also randomised comparisons. Meta-analytic subgroup analyses, like subgroup analyses within trials, are prone to bias and need to be interpreted with caution. A more reliable way of assessing differences in treatment effects is to relate outcome to some underlying patient characteristic on a continuous, or ordered, scale. The underlying level of risk is a key variable which is often related to a given treatment effect, with patients at higher risk receiving more benefit then low risk patients. Individual patient data, rather than published summary statistics, are often required for meaningful subgroup analyses. ...

Young people may want more independence but not want to give up the support of their parents/carers just yet. This can mean sometimes feeling like an adult and sometimes feeling like a child. It may also mean they sometimes act impulsively and take risks. Parents/carers may worry when their child wants to go out on their own and act independently, because they are concerned about their safety and wellbeing. Adults may know first-hand or have heard of situations where young people have been taken advantage of. They are also probably aware of the risks some young people take and may have even taken these same risks themselves when they were growing up. This can lead to arguments between parents/carers who want to keep their child safe and the young person who wants independence. Young people and their parents/carers should try to sit down and work through these issues together. It is important for parents/carers to communicate openly with their child and to make sure their child knows they can ...

For men working 1-15 hours per week, those aged 15-24 comprised the the largest share, with on average, more than 45%, with a peak of around 59% in May 1990. The distribution of the other employed men working 1-15 hours is spread relatively evenly across the other age groups, and has been relatively constant over the past 32 years (although there was an increase in the share of those aged 55 and over in the last ten years: from around 16% in 2000 to approximately 23% in 2010). Unlike men, for women there is no one particular age group which overwhelmingly contributes to those working 1-15 hours. The largest group are those aged 15-24, which has increased from 23% in February 1978 to 29% in July 2010. The proportion of employed women 55 and over working 1-15 hours per week has shown a similar pattern to men in the same age group, increasing steadily since 1995, from around 9% to approximately 17 ...
An updated global compilation of 377 new and previously published ages indicates that granitic pegmatites range in age from Mesoarchean to Neogene and have a semi-periodic age distribution. Undivided granitic pegmatites show twelve age maxima: 2913, 2687, 2501, 1853, 1379, 1174, 988, 525, 483, 391, 319, and 72 Ma. These peaks correspond broadly with various proxy records of supercontinent assembly, including the age distributions of granites, detrital zircon grains, and passive margins. Lithium-cesium-tantalum (LCT) pegmatites have a similar age distribution to the undivided granitic pegmatites, with maxima at 2638, 1800, 962, 529, 485, 371, 309, and 274 Ma. Lithium and Ta resources in LCT pegmatites are concentrated in the Archean and Phanerozoic. While there are some Li resources from the Proterozoic, the dominantly bimodal distribution of resources is particularly evident for Ta. This distribution is similar to that of orogenic gold deposits, and has been interpreted to reflect the ...
Targeted therapy is a cancer treatment that works by targeting specific genes or proteins to help stop cancer from growing and spreading. These genes and proteins are found in cancer cells or in cells related to cancer growth, like blood vessels. It may seem simple to use a drug that works specifically to your type of cancer, but targeted therapy is very complex. It is important to remember that a tumor may not always respond to a drug - each person and each tumor is different. Most people may also need surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or hormone therapy. Researchers are always in the process of developing more targeted drugs and West Cancer Center is at the forefront of research, targeted therapies, and clinical trials.. ...

Methods: Study cohort:potential kidney donors evaluated at Mayo Clinic Minnesota and Cleveland Clinic between 2000 and 2011 with an iothalamate clearance to measure GFR. High GFR was defined as either above the overall 95th percentile or the age-based 95th percentile by quantile regression. We studied the association of high GFR (overall or age-based) with clinical characteristics, cortical volume on CT, micro-structure on implantation biopsy and nephron number (cortical volume [times] glomerular density).. Results: 3,468 potential donors were evaluated, of whom 1556 were approved donors with an implantation biopsy. The overall-threshold for high GFR was , 134 ml/min/1.73 m2 and age-based thresholds were ,151 ml/min/1.73 m2 for age 18 y decreasing linearly to , 109 ml/min/1.73 m2 for age 76 y. Colon cancers are thought to be an inevitable result of aging, while testicular cancers are thought to develop in only a small fraction of men, beginning in utero. These models of carcinogenesis are, in part, based upon age-specific incidence data. The specific incidence for colon cancer appears to monotonically increase with age, while that of testicular cancer increases to a maximum value at about 35 years of age, then declines to nearly zero by the age of 80. We hypothesized that the age-specific incidence for these two cancers is similar; the apparent difference is caused by a longer development time for colon cancer and the lack of age-specific incidence data for people over 84 years of age. Here we show that a single distribution can describe the age-specific incidence of both colon carcinoma and testicular cancer. Furthermore, this distribution predicts that the specific incidence of colon cancer should reach a maximum at about age 90 and then decrease. Data on the incidence of colon carcinoma
We sought to quantify the impact of patient characteristics on complications and health care costs associated with influenza and influenza-like illness (ILI) in a nonelderly population. Patients with medical reimbursement claims for influenza in the 1996-1997 season were identified from the automated database of a large private New England Insurer (NEI). Influenza care during the 21- day follow-up period was characterized according to age, gender, vaccine status, co-morbidities, prior influenza/ILI episodes, treatments, and recent health care costs and related diagnoses. There were 6,241 patients. Approximately 20% had preexisting chronic lung disease. Overall, 23% had health care services for possible complications, among which respiratory diagnoses were the most common (13%). Two percent of the influenza/ILI episodes involved hospitalization, with a median stay of five days. Factors most strongly predictive of hospitalizations and complications were preexisting malignancy (hospitalizations OR = 3.7

The role of medical nutritional therapy and physical activity as part of T2DM self-management should never be neglected and requires constant reinforcement with the patient and positive coaching. For example, data show that regardless of what diet is used (eg, Zone, Ornish, South Beach), it is the nutritional program that a patient can persist with that will have the greatest success.39-42 Recent evidence continues to support the use of the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet in managing risk factors for T2DM43 and has recently been shown to be of specific benefit in women with gestational diabetes.44 New nutritional guidelines from the ADA focus on overall eating patterns without recommending any one form of diet while reviewing the evidence for several popular eating plans.45 The American College of Sports Medicine and the ADA have issued a joint position statement on exercise and T2DM that may be useful.46 In general, the ADA recommends that adults perform at least 150 minutes per ...
BACKGROUND: From 1979 to 2005, a total of 279 hips in 249 patients with advanced and/or terminal-stage osteoarthritis of the hip underwent valgus osteotomy. Among them, we reviewed 256 hips in 229 patients (91.8%) with a minimum follow-up of 1 year.
Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified more than 100 genetic variants contributing to BMI, a measure of body size, or waist-to-hip ratio (adjusted for BMI, WHRadjBMI), a measure of body shape. Body size and shape change as people grow older and these changes differ substantially between men and women. To systematically screen for age-and/or sex-specific effects of genetic variants on BMI and WHRadjBMI, we performed meta-analyses of 114 studies (up to 320,485 individuals of European descent) with genome-wide chip and/or Metabochip data by the Genetic Investigation of Anthropometric Traits (GIANT) Consortium. Each study tested the association of up to similar to 2.8M SNPs with BMI and WHRadjBMI in four strata (men ,= 50y, men , 50y, women ,= 50y, women , 50y) and summary statistics were combined in stratum-specific meta-analyses. We then screened for variants that showed age-specific effects (G x AGE), sex-specific effects (G x SEX) or age-specific effects that differed between men ...

After the age of 40, women have about a 10 % chance of conceiving per IVF cycle ; and even if they do the chance of miscarriage is as high as 50 %. When an older woman uses eggs form a young woman (donated eggs), her chance of conceiving and having a successful pregnancy is as high as that of the young woman ! This indicates that the implantation and developmental potential of an embryo depends mainly on the age of the oocyte , and not on the age of the uterus ! This is why surrogacy is not usually be a reasonable solution for failed IVFs - most of the time the embryos do not implant because of a problem with the embryos (because of genetically incompetent eggs !) and not because of an incompetent uterus ...
Non-Hispanic Asians aged ,18 years. Respondents who had at least 12 drinks in their lifetime and more than three drinks per week, up to 14 drinks per week (on average) for men, and more than three drinks per week up to seven drinks per week (on average) for women were moderate drinkers. Adults who had at least 12 drinks in their lifetime and more than 14 drinks per week (on average) for men and more than seven drinks per week (on average) for women were heavier drinkers. § Estimates are age adjusted using the projected 2000 U.S. population as the standard population and using four age groups: 18--24 years, 25--44 years, 45--64 years, and ,65 years. Estimates are based on household interviews of a sample of the civilian, noninstitutionalized U.S. population and are derived from the National Health Interview Survey sample adult component. Data were combined from three years of surveys to increase reliability of estimates in smaller subpopulations. ¶ 95% confidence interval. ** Includes Chinese, ...
A nationwide cohort study of AD patients and non-AD control patients matched for age, sex and residence examined the risk of stroke in AD patients; the study consisted of 56,186 participants and was conducted in Finland[2]. The study found that the risk of ischemic stroke is the same in AD patients and non-AD patients when all age groups are considered[2]. The risk of hemorrhagic stroke is increased in AD patients when compared to non-AD patients[2]. If different age groups are studied for association, the risk of any stroke is increased for AD patients 79 years old and younger, but not for those 80 years old and over[2]. The age at which AD was diagnosed also has an effect on the incidence of stroke[2]. The risk of any stroke is higher for AD patients diagnosed at a young age (38.9-73.9 years old) compared to non-AD patients[2]. However, AD patients diagnosed at an older age have a lower risk of hemorrhagic stroke compared to non-AD patients[2]. Therefore, research suggests that the risk of ...
Now what does the data show about survival by age? Below is the graph for the various age groups. Like I mentioned previously, the average 5 year life expectancy is 37.1%. I therefore believe you can make the case that if you are 65 years of age, your 5 year life expectancy would be approximately 48.3%. So you would be 1.2 times more likely to survive than the average myeloma patient. A 55 year old myeloma patient would have a 5 year survival rate of approximately 55.8%, or be 1.4 times more likely to survive. The last category, I will call the" less than 40 average" would be approximately 67.8%, or 2.0 times more likely to survive. So to the younger patient of around 40 years of age, you can expect to beat the averages by a fairly good margin. For example if the current average by USA National Cancer Institute is 4 years and you have twice the life expectancy of the average, you could expect to live 8 years. And if you are in the care of a skilled myeloma specialist whose average patient ...
The data reported in this table are derived from the HIPE (Hospital In-Patient Enquiry) data set, which records data on discharges from all publicly funded acute hospitals. Age-standardised discharge rates by county, sex and all procedures are presented. These allow comparison of discharge rates between populations of different age composition, and also of discharge rates over time. The age-standardised discharge rate (SDR) for an area is the number of discharges (per 100,000) that would occur if that area had the same age structure as the WHO European Standard Population and the local age-specific rates for that area applied. Confidence intervals for these rates are also presented. Standardised Morbidity Ratios (SMRs) are also included. SMRs express the difference between the observed discharges in each county compared to the expected discharges if the age-specific rates of the national population applied. It is presented as a ratio. A ratio that is greater than 100 indicates that county ...
Pediatric cancer survival rates overall have been improving, but neuroblastoma (NBL) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), two of the more prevalent pediatric cancers, remain particularly challenging. One issue not yet fully addressed is distinctions attributable to age of diagnosis. In this report, we verified a survival difference based on diagnostic age for both pediatric NBL and pediatric ALL datasets, with younger patients surviving longer for both diseases. We identified several gene expression markers that correlated with age, along a continuum, and then used a series of age-independent survival metrics to filter these initial correlations. For pediatric NBL, we identified 2 genes that are expressed at a higher level in lower surviving patients with an older diagnostic age; and 4 genes that are expressed at a higher level in longer surviving patients with a younger diagnostic age. For pediatric ALL, we identified 3 genes expressed at a higher level in lower surviving patients with an older
In the present study, we have quantified levels of myotrophin concentration in the hearts of SHR and normal rats of different age groups. Myotrophin was quantified in normal and hypertrophied rat hearts for various age groups by using the specific antibody raised against MAP. The antibody was characterized by solid-phase radioimmunoassays and Western blot analysis. To define the specificity of the polyclonal antibody raised against myotrophin, the affinity constant was calculated from the Scatchard plot. The accuracy of the quantification depends on the specificity of the antibody raised against MAP and its affinity toward the antigen (myotrophin). The specificity of the antibody has been established by three methods. First, we determined the affinity constant of the myotrophin antibody from the Scatchard plot as described in "Materials and Methods." The Scatchard plot was constructed by plotting the ratio of bound to free myotrophin against the concentration of bound myotrophin. The ...
Given that the cohort effect can be interpreted as a special case of the interaction between two categorical variables, the equation above satisfies the assumption that there is no interaction 21. Any violation of that assumption can be detected from graphs presenting the age-specific mortality rate by period. Lack of parallelism between the curves suggests the presence of the cohort effect 22.. This study used weighted parameterization, as proposed by Holford 20, as an alternative solution to the "non-identifiability problem".. Given that lung cancer is a chronic, non-communicable disease, rate is assumed in this model to be constant within each of the given age and period categories. Individuals are also assumed to be independent cases and, consequently, contributions to different cells in the data base are also independent. Accordingly, the APC models for rates can be adjusted using Poisson Regression for event counts. This methodology permits the use of an offset term log(nijk), which ...
