My theory is a) you cant have too many Verbascums, b) we need something tough and bright to go on the corner of the red bed (Agastache, Penstemon) and c) I have been looking for a large yellow Leucadendron for ages, and this one seems perfect. Its not as golden yellow as I wanted but it gets 6-7 tall and I have been holding a spot for it for ages ...

The roadside vegetable garden is looking good and staying on schedule for the last week of May. After years of using wood chips as a mulch there isnt much to do but plant when the time is right. I was also most pleased that all the hobby farm dung I added last fall has been essentially weed free. I did get a few free Anise Hyssop, Agastache foeniculum from the dung. They have been left for now. ...

Finding many on their backs & have been scooping them out & into the soap bucket, assuming they are stunned by the Geraniums instead of dead. Geraniums are also in all 3 deckboxes next to the Cupheas. Havent been out in the yard in the past couple of days & assume they are all over my Black Chokeberry as they usually are. Havent seen any on any of my potted plants (mostly Salvia, Lantana, Pentas & Agastache) but they were on Coneflowers in the garden but still dont see much damage on those. May bring us our fifth gardening trend for 2014: Bee-neficials: Its all about the bees this year. News on bee and other pollinator populations is everywhere this spring. Obviously, pollinators are an essential requirement for many of our favorite food crops.. Pollination is a process that takes place in a flower to transfer pollen from the male to the female flower part, thus producing a fruit (or vegetable). There are many ways that plants are pollinated, including wind and animals. Most people think of bees and butterflies when thinking about pollinators, but bats, beetles, moths, flies, hummingbirds, wasps, and more also spread pollen in some plants.. Kelly Allsup, University of Illinois Extension horticulture educator, provides the following tips to help you choose the right plants and herbs for your pollinator garden.. Pollinator gardens typically contain native perennials such as the aromatic anise hyssop (Agastache foeniculum), drought-tolerant coreopsis (Coreopsis grandiflora), ...

To date, there has been great demand for ecofriendly nematicides with beneficial properties to the nematode hosting plants. Great efforts are made towards the chemical characterization of botanical extracts exhibiting nematicidal activity against Meloidogyne spp., but only a small percentage of these data are actually used by the chemical industry in order to develop new formulates. On the other hand, the ready to use farmer produced water extracts based on edible plants could be a sustainable and economic solution for low income countries. Herein, we evaluate the nematicidal potential of Stevia rebaudiana grown in Greece against Meloidogyne incognita and Meloidogyne javanica, two most notorious phytoparasitic nematode species causing great losses in tomato cultivation worldwide. In an effort to recycle the plant’s remnants, after leaves selection for commercial use, we use both leaves and wooden stems to test for activity. In vitro tests demonstrate significant paralysis activity of both plant
Rugosa Rose Organic Potted Plant 2 gallon size. The rugosa rose is a native of Asia, but is likely the most adaptable rose species ever introduced to the North America. Rarely troubled by the foliage issues facing other roses, our wild-type rugosas grow with deep green foliage to about 5-6 feet tall if unpruned. Flowers are in early summer and are a bright pink (single flowers with 5 petals) with intense rose fragrance. Late summer sees the rose hips appear, and they are large and easy to collect, of a bright orange to red color. I do very little with the rugosas growing on our farm and property. They are a nice addition to the edible landscape. I never spray them for any reason, so they are very care free. If you like the signature fragrance of old fashioned roses, bright rose hips, and a non-stop shrub, the rugosa is your plant. Hardy in USDA zones 3-9.. FREE SHIPPING and multi-plant discount applied at checkout (get 2-4 rugosa roses save $15 off each plant, up to $60 saved!). ...
The plants leaves are divided, narrow, terete and about 5 cm long. It was first described by Robert Brown in 1810. In 1891, German botanist Otto Kuntze published Revisio generum plantarum, his response to what he perceived as a lack of method in existing nomenclatural practice. Because Isopogon was based on Isopogon anemonifolius, and that species had already been placed by Richard Salisbury in the segregate genus Atylus in 1807, Kuntze revived the latter genus on the grounds of priority, and made the new combination Atylus formosus for this species. However, Kuntzes revisionary program was not accepted by the majority of botanists. Ultimately, the genus Isopogon was nomenclaturally conserved over Atylus by the International Botanical Congress of 1905. ...

The results from this large study of C. rugosa both confirm previous observations regarding this species and refute others (6, 9). First of all, it does appear, as suggested previously by Colombo et al. (2) and Nucci and Marr (6), that the frequency of C. rugosa as a cause of candidal infections is increasing and that these infections are especially common in Latin America (Table 1). Although the apparent emergence of C. rugosa may simply reflect an increasing tendency for clinical laboratories to identify isolates of Candida species, one cannot discount the possibility that given the increased numbers of immunocompromised individuals worldwide, an ever-increasing number of previously rare species, such as C. rugosa, are truly emerging as opportunistic pathogens (6, 9). Furthermore, C. rugosa does appear to exhibit decreased susceptibility to fluconazole, and this pattern varies by geographic region (Table 2). Decreased susceptibility to both polyenes and fluconazole has been noted previously ...
16. Rosa rugosa Thunb. E. beach rose. CT, MA, ME, NH, RI, VT. Atlantic coast beaches and strands, dunes, roadsides. This species shows single and double corollas in New England.. 16×?. This very rare rose hybrid is known from VT. It is commonly referred to as RosaHollandica in horticultural literature. It is similar to Rosa rugosa in having the larger prickles pubescent and numerous small glands on the abaxial leaf surface. It differs from that species in its lighter green, less rugose leaflets, straight or weakly curved fruiting pedicels, ascending fruiting sepals, and hips 8-15 (-20) mm in diameter (vs. dark green and prominently rugose leaflets, curved fruiting pedicels, erect fruiting sepals, and hips 20-25 mm in diameter in R. rugosa). The other parent of this rose is unknown, but study suggests it may be R. davurica Pall., R. luciae, or R. multiflora (Mikanagi et al. 1994).. ...
