Afterimages are the result of retinal bleaching, and other neural adaptation processes. The mainstream idea is that afterimages disappear when the level of adaptation-modulated signal (the true afterimage) is reduced below a contrast-detection threshold (e.g. Leguire & Blake, 1982). Here we manipulated afterimage visibility by projecting a ring (i.e. a boundary) around the afterimage, without changing the visual stimulation at the position of the aftereffect itself, and thus without directly affecting adaptation-modulated signals. We show that the duration of the afterimage is lengthened by about 50% with a ring that exactly encompasses the afterimage. Rings that are equal or smaller in size than the afterimage increase afterimage duration relative to a condition without a ring, while boundaries larger than the afterimage decrease afterimage duration. We find furthermore that maximum modulation occurs for intermediate contrasts of the ring, making attentional capture (by large luminance changes) ...
It has been suggested that attenuated adaptation to visual stimuli in autism is the result of atypical perceptual priors (e.g., Pellicano and Burr in Trends Cogn Sci 16(10):504-510, 2012. doi:10.1016/j.tics.2012.08.009). This study investigated adaptation to color in autistic adults, measuring both strength of afterimage and the influence of top-down knowledge. We found no difference in color afterimage strength between autistic and typical adults. Effects of top-down knowledge on afterimage intensity shown by Lupyan (Acta Psychol 161:117-130, 2015. doi:10.1016/j.actpsy.2015.08.006) were not replicated for either group. This study finds intact color adaptation in autistic adults. This is in contrast to findings of attenuated adaptation to faces and numerosity in autistic children. Future research should investigate the possibility of developmental differences in adaptation and further examine top-down effects on adaptation.. ...

When you stare at a particular color for too long, these receptors get "tired" or "fatigued." In the case of the picture above, the cone cells in our eyes that respond primarily to the color blue become overstimulated by the intense blue hue of the first image and subsequently lose sensitivity. However the cones that respond primarily to red and green are, more or less, still fresh. So when the picture switches to black and white, the blue cones can only send out a weak signal while the red and green cones send out strong signals. The fact that the color photoreceptors are not in balance results in our seeing the negative afterimages on the walls of the buildings ...

Jarosław Lubiak, curator of the exhhibition "Afterimages of life. Władysław Strzemiński and rights for art" at ms2, Lodz, Poland, explains the work of Władysław Strzemiński (1893-1952), one of the most important polish avant-garde artist. Strzemiński was a painter, designer, theoritican and teacher. The theory of Unism, which he created, was an importand contribution to the history of art of 20th century.. Strzemiński wrote many articles and books. His most important publications include: Unism in Painting (1928); Space Composition. Time - Space Rythm and its Calculations (1931) ; Theory of Vision (1958), written together with his wife, Katarzyna Kobro.. The curators invited German artist, Katja Strunz, to create the exhibition space. Thanks to her intervention in the shape of the architecture of the exhibition, we are given a new commentary to the works of Strzemiński.. This is a work of art historiography that does not unfold by treating the object of its study, namely Singaporean modern art, as a singular unity with fixed contours. Instead it proceeds first by identifying fragments. It is set into motion by picking up strands. In such a process, any notion of a monolithic Singaporean modern art unravels, but if we follow where these threads lead to, we may arrive at an understanding of art and art history beyond the narrow confines of Singapore. As such this dissertation functions as a critique of how Singaporean art has been cast and stifled by latent and overt forms of identitarian desires and politics. By surveying ideas of influence, translation and transmissions of culture from the fields of art theories, philosophy, post-colonial theories, literary studies, sociology and biology, a new conceptual framework for understanding art as afterimages is proposed ...

David LaRocca. John Opera is an American photographer who works at the intersection of photographic materiality and light-derived abstraction. Since graduating from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (where he earned an MFA), Opera has lived and worked in Chicago. His work has been the subject of recent solo exhibitions in New York (2013), Los Angeles (2014), and Miami (2014). The preoccupation of his practice in the last few years has centered on the relationship between the material origins of photographic processes and the way those processes can be manipulated to express form, texture, and tone. Drawing on the most primitive components of imagemaking, Opera has reclaimed processes such as the anthotype and cyanotype and applied them to the representation of abstractions as well as everyday objects. Especially in his recent work, Opera addresses the peculiarity of organic, light-sensitive materials that give rise to two-dimensional tableaus. For this reason, many of his recent pieces ...

Gallery 2. Afterimage presents depictions of places and occurrences experienced in my childhood. These memories, altered by imagination, dreams and new events, were the inspiration for this series. Images of mundane events from childhood, events sweet and painful, breathtaking and scary, colourful and dark, helped to thread together a little journey through my early days in Poland, from a period when the passage of time, worries and concerns did not exist.. - Renata Buziak. Body Now that Andrzej Wajda has finally exited from the Polish cinematic scene its become easier to assess the significant strengths and weaknesses of this architect of post-WWII Polish cinema. Afterimage is probably the late directors best film since Korczak (1990) and features a magnificent turn from Polish 1980s and 1990s stalwart Bogusław Linda as the charismatic artist Władysław Strzemiński. The directors affinity for the independence of the artist against institutional pressures animates this quietly effective biopic.. ...

Fix your gaze on the central black point on the bird, as well as while the sky flashes. When the bird starts to fly, follow it, and keep staring at the black fixation point. Youll start to notice, that the "empty bird" is filled-in with a color similar to the previous backgrounds color. The colored image produces illusory colors, an afterimage on "empty" shape, which induces an effect opposite to the well known "afterimage" effect. The common "afterimage" effect yields perceived complementary color, whereas the current effect shows an appearance of a color similar to that of the background, where originally, no physical color was present in the empty shape.. ...
To do: Fixate your gaze on the red dot, while paying attention to the solid grey circle (called an "artificial scotoma". After a few seconds of steady fixation, the solid circle will fill in with the surrounding dynamic noise. Eye movements or blinks will cause the grey circle to reappear.. To notice: After the dynamic noise disappears (in 20 seconds), a powerful texture after-image takes the place originally occupied by the solid grey circle. This after-image may be dynamic: the so-called Twinkle effect (Ramachandran and Gregory, 1991) or static (Spillmann and Kurtenbach, 1992).. Dynamic filling-in occurs when eye movements are lacking or reduced. Our laboratory has showed that microsaccades (small involuntary eye movements that occur when we attempt to fixate) counteract visual fading and filling-in during visual fixation (Troncoso, Macknik and Martinez-Conde, 2008).. ...

Use of samples and classical instruments is an integral part of their style, crafting an atmosphere that is both charmingly naturalistic and uniquely Chinese in feel. The title track breaks out into bright piano, bird samples, and peaceful flutistry, melding and supplanting the black metal like a truly dour take on Perfect Cherry Blossom. Other tracks, such as "Desolated Mountain," have the requisite drippy Burzum keys in all their glory, while Return Journey" juxtaposes those with traditional pipa trilling. These elements never overpower the metal or become heavily relied on; rather, theyre deftly interwoven amidst the cold guitars. The riffs themselves are decently basic, exhibiting a hypnotic repetition obviously culled from the Burzum school of black metal, but they flow well and have a calm air of purpose about them that suits the style well. As is all too rarely seen in black metal, the bass is charmingly present in the mix, slightly catchy yet also lending a bit of doom to the ...

Abstract-We consider the challenge of tracking and estimating the size of a single submerged target in a high reverberant un- derwater environment using a single active acoustic transceiver. This problem is common for a multitude of applications, ranging from the security and safety needs of tracking submerged vehicles and scuba divers, to environmental research and management implications such as the monitoring of pelagic fauna. Considering that the target can be either slow (e.g., a scuba diver) or fast- moving (e.g., a shark), we avoid continuous signalling, and rely on the emission of wideband pulses whose reflection pattern are evaluated and reshaped in a time-distance matrix. As opposed to common approaches that track targets through template matching or by using tracking filters, we avoid making difficult assumptions about the targets reflection patterns or motion type, and instead perform probabilistic tracking using a constraint Viterbi algorithm, whereby detection is determined based ...

The main plot is over. Deckard has, if not won, then at least survived. He sits, shell-shocked on the roof, the rain washing away the blood from the phenomenal beating Batty has dished out to him. Then we hear the voice of Gaff. Dapper little Gaff whos been there since the very beginning of the film, watching. Watching and obsessively making little models. Little models, moreover, which seem to show a remarkable insight into Deckards mind. When Deckard find himself attracted to the Replicant Rachel, Gaff crafts a matchstick man with an enormous erection; Gaff also casually leaves behind a unicorn - just like the Unicorn Deckard daydreams of. "Youve done a mans job, sir," says Gaff. He checks if Deckard is through. "Finished," replies the beaten Blade Runner. Gaff throws Deckard his gun and turns to leave with one more cryptic comment.. Lets take a moment to glory in the shot before we unpick the narrative. The cold blue tones offset by the splash of yellow. The futuristic spinner cars, ...
