The Kabul Basin, including the city of Kabul, Afghanistan, is host to several military installations of Afghanistan, the United States, and other nations that depend on groundwater resources for water supply. These installations are within or close to the city of Kabul. Groundwater also is the potable supply for the approximately four million residents of Kabul. The sustainability of water resources in the Kabul Basin is a concern to military operations, and Afghan water-resource managers, owing to increased water demands from a growing population and potential mining activities. This study illustrates the use of chemical and isotopic analysis, groundwater flow modeling, and hydrogeologic investigations to assess the sustainability of groundwater resources in the Kabul Basin.Water supplies for military installations in the southern Kabul Basin were found to be subject to sustainability concerns, such as the potential drying of shallow-water supply wells as a result of declining water levels. By Corey Aalders. HALIFAX - A new Refugee Health Clinic is ensuring refugees and their families have the health care they need.. The Refugee Health Clinic is a partnership with Immigrant Settlement Association of Nova Scotia, Halifax Refugee Clinic and Department of Health and Wellness. The clinic provides refugees and their families with primary and preventative health services during their initial integration into the Halifax area.. "When my family arrived in Nova Scotia we had no family doctor. We had no money to access a private clinic," said Alphonce Mutangoma, a patient of the Refugee Health Clinic. "We had no means to care for our health. The Refugee Health Clinic has been a great benefit to my family and fellow immigrants. It is a wonderful, life changing initiative.". At a standing room-only event to launch the clinic, Health and Wellness minister Leo Glavine, Immigration minister Lena Diab and NSHA President and CEO Janet Knox spoke welcomed refugees, stakeholders and staff.. Afghanistans opium poppy production goes into more than 90% of heroin worldwide. Afghanistan has been the worlds greatest illicit opium producer, ahead of Burma (Myanmar), the "Golden Triangle", and Latin America since 1992, excluding the year 2001. Afghanistan is the main producer of opium in the "Golden Crescent". Opium production in Afghanistan has been on the rise since U.S. occupation started in 2001. Based on UNODC data, opium poppy cultivation was more in each of the growing seasons in the periods between 2004 and 2007 than in any one year during Taliban rule. More land is now used for opium in Afghanistan than is used for coca cultivation in Latin America. In 2007, 93% of the non-pharmaceutical-grade opiates on the world market originated in Afghanistan. This amounts to an export value of about $4 billion, with a quarter being earned by opium farmers and the rest going to district officials, insurgents, warlords, and drug traffickers. In the seven years (1994-2000) prior to a Taliban ...

waxy and possibly odorous, natural lubricant cleaning genitals, the end result of dead skin cells and fatty oils primarily shed from certain parts of genitalia: the inner cavity of the foreskin in men and the folds of the labia minora and clitoris in women. With regular hygiene, smegma is transparent and unnoticeable, otherwise it becomes opaque, white or yellow, with strong fish-like smell that comes from the bacterial breakdown of the oils. On exposure smegma readily undergoes changes in chemical composition and physical consistency, differing in color from yellow to white and varying at different stages of life ...
Aims: to evaluate whether the information on refugee status based on the residence permit is a useful source of information for perinatal health surveillance. Methods: using the Swedish population registers (1997-2012), we use multinomial regression models to assess the associations between migration status (refugee and non-refugee) and birth outcomes derived from birthweight and gestational age: low birthweight (lBW) (,2500 g), macrosomia (≥4000 g); preterm: (,37 w) and post-term (≥42 w). The Swedish-born population was used as a reference group. Results: Compared to the Swedish-born population, an increased OR (odds ratio) of lBW and post-term was found among migrants with and without refugee status (respectively: OR for refugees: 1.47 [95% CI: 1.33-1.63] and non-refugees:1.27 [95% CI: 1.18-1.38], for refugees: 1.41 [95% CI: 1.35-1.49] and non-refugees:1.04 [95% CI: 1.00-1.08]) with statistically significant differences between these two migrant categories. However, when looking at ...
Morgan M, Lockwood A, Steinke D, Schleenbaker R, Botts S.. Psychiatr Serv. 2012 Feb 1;63(2):182-5.. OBJECTIVE:. The purpose of this study was to determine if veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) are treated differently pharmacologically than patients with PTSD alone.. METHODS:. A retrospective evaluation of PTSD pharmacotherapy of Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom veterans with PTSD (N=707) was conducted between April 1, 2007, and March 31, 2009. A total of 45 veterans had suffered a mild TBI.. RESULTS:. Compared with the patients with PTSD alone, the patients with PTSD and TBI were more likely to be prescribed an antidepressant (p,.001), a sedative-hypnotic (p,.001), or an antipsychotic (p=.024). The patients with TBI were also significantly more likely to receive psychotropic polypharmacy (p=.001) and to receive higher doses of psychiatric medications (p=.03).. CONCLUSIONS:. The differences in drug therapy found in this study ...
Despite its high reproductive potential [e.g. [27]], the Danish European brown hare has, according to annual harvest records, declined dramatically since 1955. Studies of Danish European brown hare populations indicate that its reproductive success is low compared to that of con-specifics in other countries [27], and has, in turn, declined from the 1950s to the 1990s [28]. Hansen [27] suggested that the low reproductive success observed in Danish European brown hares might be attributed to the agricultural practice. Using data covering almost half a century, our analyses suggest that the dramatic decline in the Danish European brown hares can be attributed mainly to the negative effect of red foxes, but also to the agricultural land-use. The area of winter cereal production has increased dramatically during the last century, and became the dominating crop in the early 1990s. We also found a significant positive association between root crops, a crop type that has declined dramatically in the ...

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the neuropsychological functioning of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) combat veterans with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). More specifically, this study sought to examine whether the neuropsychological functioning of OEF/OIF combat veterans with PTSD and a comorbid mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) significantly differed from those with uncomplicated PTSD across multiple tests of cognitive functioning. To accomplish this objective, the medical records and neuropsychological assessment data of 59 OEF/OIF combat veterans with PTSD and 66 OEF/OIF combat veterans with PTSD and comorbid mild TBI were examined and included for statistical analysis. Results of this study yielded three main conclusions. First, neither group of OEF/OIF combat veterans demonstrated notable performance deficits across the battery of cognitive tests examined in this study. Second the neuropsychological functioning of OEF/OIF combat ...

The following is a posting from The Jacksonian Party.. The following is a position paper of The Jacksonian Party.. Of all the things that cannot be done, Nation Building is the one that cannot be done from the outside. To have a Nation one must have a people committed to it, willing to stand up for their neighbors to live under the rule of law and be able to expect some modicum of protection from their government. When reading Sen. Liebermans piece in The Wall Street Journal of 06 FEB 2009, I come away agreeing with much and disagreeing with some areas. While I have disagreed with Sen. Lieberman on many social issues, on military and foreign affairs I find more than majority agreement with his positions.. First and foremost is a strategic coherence on the fighting in the Afghanistan theater, as it is more than just Afghanistan a full and complete approach that includes Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Pakistan, India, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan is essential. I have looked at the main supply ...
Humanitarian assistance is still relevant in eastern Ukraine. The United Nations reports that 3.1 million people are in need of emergency aid, particularly health services, food, clean water, sanitation and shelter. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania will allocate humanitarian aid to the International Committee of the Red Cross. Lithuania has already allocated EUR 1.1 million in humanitarian help to Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict, out of which EUR 256,6 thousand were provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania.. Bearing in mind the exceptional role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in providing assistance to more than 5 million Palestine refugees, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania allocated EUR 20,000 to the organization. UNRWA provides assistance and support to Palestine refugees, who live in 58 recognized Palestine refugee camps in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Gaza and the West Bank, including ...
In Western Asia, Afghan refugees constitute one of the main vulnerable populations with drug and HIV treatment needs. However, there is not considerable provision of drug and HIV services for this group. The study aimed to describe the provision of drug treatment and harm reduction services for Afghan refugees in Iran, the most populous Persian Gulf country. With the collaboration of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Tehran, Iran, a project was conducted by Rebirth Society in 2010 to provide free drug and HIV treatment and harm reduction services. Two drop-in-centers were allocated to the project. Six outreach peer members and four staff members were trained. Data were collected by a checklist and analyzed by SPSS version 18. Eighty-one Afghan refugees were admitted. All of them were drug users and needed HIV services. Drug treatments such as methadone maintenance treatment and therapeutic community services were provided. In addition, harm reduction programs such as condom ...

Headline: Bitcoin & Blockchain Searches Exceed Trump! Blockchain Stocks Are Next!. President Trump today issued a revised version of his infamous executive order to temporarily ban the issuance of new green cards and visas for nationals from Iran, Syria, Yemen, Libya, Somalia, and Sudan. The new order dropped Iraq, which eviscerated Trumps argument that the list of banned countries is based on an existing list in U.S. law. The order also cuts the number of refugee admissions by about 37 percent compared to the post-1975 average number of annual refugees admitted-from 79,329 per year to just 50,000. However, there were 110,000 refugees scheduled to be admitted in 2017 so the actual decrease in refugees this year is a whopping 55 percent under this executive order. The Trump administration thinks this new order addresses many of the legal challenges made against the first version.. Introduction. When the first version of this order was signed at the end of January, Catos research showed that the ...

Background: Knowledge on antimicrobial drug resistance and genetic characteristics of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates circulating in India, Pakistan, and Bhutan is sorely lacking. In this paper, we describe the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance and molecular characteristics of N. gonorrhoeae isolates from India, Pakistan, and Bhutan in 2007-2011. Methods: Antimicrobial susceptibility and beta-lactamase production were tested for 65 N. gonorrhoeae isolates from India (n=40), Pakistan (n=18) and Bhutan (n=7) using Etest methodology (eight antimicrobials) and nitrocefin solution, respectively. Resistance determinants, i.e. penA, mtrR, porB1b, gyrA, and parC, were sequenced. N. gonorrhoeae multiantigen sequence typing (NG-MAST) was performed for molecular epidemiology. Results: The highest resistance level was observed for ciprofloxacin (94%), followed by penicillin G (68%), erythromycin (62%), tetracycline (55%), and azithromycin (7.7%). All the isolates were susceptible to ceftriaxone, ...
Many service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan have difficulties adjusting back to civilian life. Research shows that symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are particularly high in returning Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF)/Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) veterans, and that combat-related nightmares and sleep disturbances are common in veterans with PTSD. This is of concern because people with these problems will often use unhealthy ways of coping. Although combat-related nightmares and difficulty sleeping are highly distressing, there are helpful treatments that do not involve taking medication. One of these treatments teaches specific skills to help people improve their sleep habits and to change their nightmares so that they are less upsetting. This treatment can be very helpful and research shows that people experience decreases in the frequency and severity of their nightmares, decreased symptoms of depression and PTSD, and improved sleep quality and quantity after ...

The U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 1017, the Chiropractic Care Available to All Veterans Act, tonight, putting Americas veterans one step closer to gaining access to chiropractic care at all major Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers. The bill was approved 365:6. H.R. 1017 requires the VA to have doctors of chiropractic on staff at no fewer than 75 major VA medical centers before the end of 2011 and for all major VA medical centers to have a doctor of chiropractic on staff before the end of 2013. There are nearly 160 VA treatment facilities nationwide. Currently, the VA provides chiropractic care at 32 treatment facilities across the country. The bill comes after a recent VA report, Analysis of VA Health Care Utilization Among Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) Veterans, from Feb 2010 which cites diseases of Musculoskeletal System/Connective System, such as back pain, as the number one ailment of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans ...
GENEVA (9 March 2015) - The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Eritrea, Sheila B. Keetharuth, today started an official visit to Belgium (9-11 March) to collect first-hand information from Eritrean refugees and migrants on the human rights situation in Eritrea.. Since 2014, Ms. Keetharuth has carried out similar information-gathering missions to Djibouti, Ethiopia, Germany, Italy, Malta and Tunisia. "Due to lack of access to Eritrea," she said, "I have been engaging with Eritrean refugees and migrants outside of their home country, and all others concerned by human rights in Eritrea, including those who consider themselves to be victims of alleged human rights violations, human rights defenders and other civil society actors." The human rights expert has made several official requests to visit Eritrea since her appointment in November 2012, which have so far not been granted. She has repeatedly urged the Eritrean authorities to cooperate with her mandate in order ...

Leishmania major is a species of parasites found in the genus Leishmania, and is associated with the disease zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (also known as Aleppo boil, Baghdad boil, Bay sore, Biskra button, Chiclero ulcer, Delhi boil, Kandahar sore, Lahore sore, Oriental sore, Pian bois, and Uta). L. major is an intracellular pathogen which infects the macrophages and dendritic cells of the immune system. Though Leishmania species are found on every continent aside from Antarctica, Leishmania major is found only in the Eastern Hemisphere, specifically in Northern Africa, the Middle East, Northwestern China, and Northwestern India. As a trypanosomatid, L. major begins its lifecycle in promastigote form in the midgut of the main vector, female sand flies (Phlebotomus spp.). Once in the gut of the sand fly, the parasites change from aflagelated amastigotes into flagellated promastigotes for 1-2 weeks until they are fully developed, a which point they make their way to the proboscis. Upon biting a ...
Objective: The primary objective of this study is to determine the behavioral-anatomical relationships that underlie fatigue and amotivation following mild traumatic brain injury in deployed military service members. The specific aims are to 1) determine the neural correlates of fatigue, and 2) assess how fatigue and social cognition relate to social outcomes including employment, community integration and participation in social activities. The theory we will test is that fatigue in this population is the result of subtle changes in frontal cortical and subcortical structures.. Study Design: Observational, natural history study.. Populations: 1) Individuals who have sustained a mild traumatic brain injury as a service member deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn, and who continue to experience symptoms more than 6 months after injury, and 2) Companions of individuals from the first group.. Outcome Measures: We will seek statistical ...
Blast-related ocular trauma comprises a specialized group of penetrating and blunt force injuries to the eye and its structure caused by the detonation of explosive materials. The incidence of ocular trauma due to blast forces has increased dramatically with the introduction of new explosives technology into modern warfare. The availability of these volatile materials, coupled with the tactics of contemporary terrorism, has caused a rise in the number of homemade bombs capable of extreme physical harm. The United States Department of Defense classifies IEDs as explosive machines that are constructed exclusively (i.e., without mass production) and result in the direct physical harm of surrounding individuals. The use of these bombs by insurgents has been the number one cause of death and injury among Coalition soldiers since the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom in April 2003. Detonation of the IED occurs remotely or as victim-induced mechanical disturbance. Further classification of IEDs falls ...
Reporting on casualties of Afghans did not begin until 2007, and a variety of entities now report the casualties of civilians and security forces members. The United Nations Assistance Mission to Afghanistan (UNAMA) reports casualty data of Afghan civilians semiannually, and the U.S. Department of Defense occasionally includes civilian casualty figures within its reports on Afghanistan. The Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission, http://www.aihrc.org/ 2010_eng/, and the Afghan Rights Monitor, http://www.arm.org.af/, are local watchdog organizations that periodically publish reports regarding civilian casualties. From July 2009 through April 2010, the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) included statistics of casualties of members of the Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police in its quarterly reports to Congress. SIGAR has ceased this practice, and there is no other published compilation of these statistics. This report now derives casualty figures ...
Of the 8 confirmed or probable cases of TBE among U.S. military service members and beneficiaries during the 13-year surveillance period, 7 occurred in 2017 or 2018. Five of the cases occurred in service members and 3 in children; all cases occurred in Germany in the states of BW or Bavaria. There were no cases of TBE identified among U.S. military service members or beneficiaries traveling to Europe. All but 1 of the cases were hospitalized in a host nation medical facility, and most of the case information was extracted from translations of those hospitalization records. RME surveillance identified 5 of the cases, while laboratory data identified only 1. This is not surprising, as only laboratory tests from MTFs could reliably be obtained and only 1 of the cases was treated in an MTF. Additional case finding using outpatient records revealed large numbers of misclassified cases regardless of data source, largely from medical encounters for TBE vaccine or tick bites that were miscoded as TBE ...
In the mid-1990s elements of the 87th Infantry trained in Pakistan, Panama, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. In 1999 Co B, 1-87 was deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina in support of Operation Joint Forge. Co C, 1-87 completed a similar deployment from October 1998 to March 1999. Other combat and peace keeping deployments of the 1st and 2d Battalions of the 87th Infantry included Iraq (1991, present), Somalia (1992-93), Haiti (1994-95), Bosnia and Afghanistan (particularly Operation Anaconda, where 1-87 was the first unit on the ground during the initial invasion of Afghanistan).[7] A detachment (3d Platoon) from Co C, 1-87 was attached to the 2d Battalion, 14th Infantry and served as the Quick Reaction Force (QRF) during the Battle of Mogadishu. The unit never deployed to Somalia as a whole, but all of 1st Battalion was attached to other units while deployed to Somalia, including 2-87 IN, and the 2d Battalion, 14th Infantry. The 1st Battalion deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from July ...
Afghanistan has held a strategic position throughout history. It has been inhabited since the Paleolithic and later became a crossroad for expanding civilizations and empires. Afghanistans location, history, and diverse ethnic groups present a unique opportunity to explore how nations and ethnic groups emerged, and how major cultural evolutions and technological developments in human history have influenced modern population structures. In this study we have analyzed, for the first time, the four major ethnic groups in present-day Afghanistan: Hazara, Pashtun, Tajik, and Uzbek, using 52 binary markers and 19 short tandem repeats on the non-recombinant segment of the Y-chromosome. A total of 204 Afghan samples were investigated along with more than 8,500 samples from surrounding populations important to Afghanistans history through migrations and conquests, including Iranians, Greeks, Indians, Middle Easterners, East Europeans, and East Asians. Our results suggest that all current Afghans largely share
The OECDs Development Assistance Committee (DAC) conducts periodic reviews of the individual development co-operation efforts of DAC members. The policies and programmes of each DAC member are critically examined approximately once every five years. DAC peer reviews assess the performance of a given member, not just that of its development co-operation agency, and examine both policy and implementation. They take an integrated, system-wide perspective on the development co-operation and humanitarian assistance activities of the member under review.Since its last peer review, a severe economic recession brought about significant cuts to Greeces national budget - including official development assistance. However, Greece has maintained its commitment to development co-operation. In response to the refugee and migration crisis Greece mobilised resources and its population to provide significant support to asylum seekers and refugees, and adapted its domestic policies to create conditions for peaceful co
