TY - JOUR. T1 - Antecedents and consequences of real-time affective reactions at work. AU - Fisher, Cynthia D. PY - 2002/3. Y1 - 2002/3. N2 - Based partly on Weiss and Cropanzanos (H. M. Weiss & R. Cropanzano, 1996) Affective Events Theory, hypotheses were stated about likely antecedents and consequences of positive and negative real-time affective reactions at work. Somewhat different antecedents and consequences were predicted for positive as opposed to negative affective reactions. Affective reactions were operationalized as the average of up to 50 reports of momentary positive and negative feelings collected at work over a 2-week period. Structural equation analyses suggest that the data are consistent with the theoretical model proposed. As expected, job characteristics and positive dispositional affectivity predict positive affective reactions, role conflict and negative affectivity predict negative affective reactions, positive affective reactions predict affective commitment and helping ...
Positive mood Positive mood can be caused by many different aspects of life as well as have certain effects on people as a whole. Good mood is usually considered a state without an identified cause; people cannot pinpoint exactly why they are in a good mood. People seem to experience a positive mood when they have a clean slate, have had a good night sleep, and feel no sense of stress in their life. There have been many studies done on the effect of positive emotion on the cognitive mind and there is speculation that positive mood can affect our minds in good or bad ways. Generally, positive mood has been found to enhance creative problem solving and flexible yet careful thinking.[4] Some studies have stated that positive moods let people think creatively, freely, and be more imaginative. Positive mood can also help individuals in situations in which heavy thinking and brainstorming is involved. In one experiment, individuals who were induced with a positive mood enhanced performance on the ...

Information in the environment is frequently ambiguous in meaning. Emotional ambiguity, such as the stare of a stranger, or the scream of a child, encompasses possible good or bad emotional consequences. Those with elevated vulnerability to affective disorders tend to interpret such material more negatively than those without, a phenomenon known as negative interpretation bias. In this study we examined the relationship between vulnerability to psychosis, measured by trait paranoia, and interpretation bias. One set of material permitted broadly positive/negative (valenced) interpretations, while another allowed more or less paranoid interpretations, allowing us to also investigate the content specificity of interpretation biases associated with paranoia. Regression analyses (n=70) revealed that trait paranoia, trait anxiety, and cognitive inflexibility predicted paranoid interpretation bias, whereas trait anxiety and cognitive inflexibility predicted negative interpretation bias. In a group comparison
We review the idea of Positive & Negative Affect in terms of the Positive & Negative Affect Schedule or PANAS as both states affect our lives & how we live.
This study translated the International Positive and Negative Affect Schedule Short Form (I-PANAS-SF) into Chinese and examined its factor structure and measurement invariance in Chinese adolescents in Hong Kong. A sample of 4136 Chinese adolescents in Hong Kong was invited to complete a set of questionnaires. The factor structure of the I-PANA-SF was examined using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and exploratory structural equational modeling (ESEM). Internal consistency reliability was evaluated using Cronbachs alpha coefficients, and nomological validity was assessed using bivariate correlations between positive affect (PA) and negative affect (NA) subscales with effort, worry and lack of concentration. Finally, measurement invariance across genders and grades was examined to evaluate the invariance of the I-PANAS-SF. Factor structure analysis suggested that the ESEM model outperformed the CFA model. The results of ESEM analysis indicated that one item (
most commonly used measure in scholarly research is the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS). The PANAS is a lexical measure developed in a ...
BACKGROUND: significant frontal cortex dysfunction. It is hypothesised that performance on frontal lobe tasks may be sensitive to induced fluctuations in mood state in non-clinical samples. METHODS: Subjects performed one of two neuropsychological tasks immediately subsequent to a musical mood induction procedure designed to induce either elation or depression. Mood was assessed using self-report measures. Salivary cortisol levels were also measured in an attempt to objectively validate mood induction effects. The tasks used were verbal fluency and Damasios Gambling Game. Two groups of subjects were recruited: a group with previous (subclinical) hypomanic experience (n=23) and a control group without previous hypomanic experience (n=23). RESULTS: The positive and negative mood inductions produced robust and contrasting effects on self-reported mood, but had no significant differential effects on salivary cortisol levels and neuropsychological performance. Self-esteem is the assessment a person makes, and certainly maintains, about some aspects of himself/herself through emotional responses that she/he experiences, contemplates, and evaluates about these different aspects. Thus, as a persons affective state may be related to his/her level of self-esteem (positive affective states reflect high self-esteem and negative affective states are related to low self-esteem), this paper investigates the relationship between the concept and the use of contemporary technology. The affective states of some children with craniofacial deformities were analyzed while they interacted with a pervasive and ubiquitous computer system. The results presented and discussed were obtained along three workshops conducted with children in a hospital environment and were analyzed based on the affective categories of PANAS-X, a classic method used in the analysis of affective states. From the results obtained it was possible to establish relationships between the main ...

Background: Although some depression trials have included quality of life (QoL) as an outcome measure, assessments were retrospective and relatively infrequent. Because QoL varies in relation to everyday experience, intensive time-sampling approaches may be useful. Method: The experience sampling method (ESM) was used to assess effects of antidepressant treatment on the quality of life, as measured from moment to moment in daily life (mQoL), and related aspects of daily experience. Primary care patients with a DSM-III-R/DSM-IV diagnosis of major depressive disorder were randomly assigned to imipramine (N=32) or placebo (N=31) treatment for 6 weeks, with possible prolongation to 18 weeks. A healthy control group (N=22) provided normative data. Results: Treatment-related increases in frequency and severity of physical complaints, including those not reported to the general practitioner as side effects, were associated with lowered mQoL; this negative association was especially strong in treatment ...
The data for these analyses were obtained by taking the opportunity provided by an ongoing randomised placebo controlled trial of a drug treatment that produces substantial and sustained reductions in plasma cholesterol concentrations.17 A comparison of mood scores derived from a shortened version of the profile of mood state questionnaire allowed us to evaluate the possibility that lowering cholesterol concentration is associated with adverse effects on mood.5 6 7 8 There was a high response rate to the mood questionnaire (87%) and, although completers differed from non-completers on certain baseline characteristics, there was no difference in response rate between the simvastatin and placebo groups and therefore no reason to suspect any bias in the results. In this study, there was no evidence after nearly three years that the substantial reduction in cholesterol concentration produced by simvastatin was associated with any adverse mood effects. Nor was there any evidence of adverse effects on ...
Department of Psychology, Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden. [email protected] Research on human putative pheromones has recently focused on the effects of exposure to 4,16-androstadien-3-one (androstadienone). This steroid has been observed in the skin, axillary hair, and blood plasma, primarily in males. In addition to effects of the steroid on measures of physiological arousal and brain blood flow, positive mood effects have also been reported. The current study further investigated mood effects of androstadienone exposure (250 microM) in women in two experiments. Through psychophysical testing of each individual we controlled for whether any observed mood effects could be related to sensory detection of the steroid. In both experiments, we observed positive changes of womens feeling of being focused, which could not be related to sensory detection of the steroid. Overall, the patterns of results were significantly correlated between the two experiments. In conclusion, this study ...
Weve talked about how the mental aspect of fitness allows you to stay more balanced, and how it can keep you more focused on the goals. However, the real question is, can this benefit your workout directly? And what are the best ways to use psychology and spiritual caretaking to achieve it if this is the case?. Taking mind and spirit-positive actions before and during a workout will improve your mood, boost your energy, and give you a more positive attitude. This is especially helpful when you hit the wall - a common occurrence where our bodies try to give out before were done. If were not in a positive mood when we hit this wall, we often give in to it.. This positive mood also decreases stress, which is energy-draining in and of itself. Thus, your body will perform at optimal capacity during the workout if youve evened out your mood and cleared your mind. How do we achieve this, though?. As we mentioned before, one common practice for preparation is yoga or meditation, the former of which ...

This article deals with the experience of the specific client of health services, that is, the patient. Satisfaction questionnaires are usually applied to assess patient experience. However, this tool provides only a cognitive evaluation; it does not afford an affective dimension of the experience. The objective of the present study is to verify the relationship between the cognitive dimension of patient experience, collected through questionnaires, and the affective dimension, derived from the analysis of neurophysiological data. We propose a novel methodology that integrates physiological data collected by facial expression analysis to identify patients emotions. A first, qualitative procedure was carried out to define the patient journey. This was recorded on video and later used in the experiment. The experiment collected information from the participants using two techniques. First, as they viewed the videos, facial expression analysis (FEA) was applied to assess their responses. Second, after

Mood repair strategies offer techniques that an individual can use to shift their mood from general sadness or clinical depression to a state of greater contentment or happiness. A mood repair strategy is a cognitive, behavioral, and interpersonal psychological tool used to affect the mood regulation of an individual. Various mood repair strategies are most commonly used in cognitive therapy. They are commonly assigned as homework by therapists in order to help positively impact individuals who are experiencing dysphoria or depression.[not in citation given][need quotation to verify] However, these tools can also be used for individuals experiencing temporary unwanted moods. Many factors go into the effectiveness of mood repair strategies on an individual ranging from the clients self-esteem to their experience with the strategy being used.[unreliable medical source?] Even the way the mood repair strategy is presented (either to avoid negative moods or to pursue positive moods) may have an ...

Philosophical and, in particular, phenomenological explorations of psychopathology in recent years exemplify such growing interest and attention for affectivity and the dynamics through which this may be involved in the aetiology and symptomatology of mental illness. In this context, significant contributions have been made to further our understanding of forms of mental illness in which alterations of affectivity have been widely recognized as a key element, for example mood disorders, and, in particular, depression. Amongst other phenomena, philosophical research in this area has highlighted the connections be-tween affective disturbances and bodily, interpersonal, temporal, and social experience, shedding light on the complex and multi-faceted structure of the disorders in question. Research in philosophical psychopathology, however, has also significantly contributed to unearth various manners in which disruptions of affectivity can be implicated in what traditionally have been conceived ...

By Jim Selman , Bio. Moods color our experience of living. They are all encompassing interpretations of the world-especially the future-and tend to determine the quality of our lives. When we are in a positive mood, the world is bright and we feel great. When we are in a negative mood, we typically want to withdraw from or strike out at everyone around us. One of the most useful things we can learn as we grow up (at any age) is that moods arent personal. First of all, they are involuntary. No one I know decides they will be in a bad mood (although there are a few who more or less equate their mood with the way I am, which can become a kind of self-fulfilling story and can justify just about anything). For example, I know a man who believes that he is, more or less, permanently doomed to procrastinate and put off what he knows he needs to do until the last minute. He then begins to become annoyed with himself weeks before. read more ...

A significant and important sphere of our life which constantly goes away in a direction that we do not want it to is the way we look after our mental well-being and how it influences our overall behavior and the way we perform our actions. E.g. if we are in a positive mood today, automatically all our actions will begin to get influenced by that and positive emotions that exist in our mind, start showing in our interactions. Also, if a negative and difficult situation comes into our life suddenly and our mind moves into a negative direction, then almost automatically our actions go into that direction.. How do we prevent this process from happening? What is the single best method to follow to prevent the mind from coming under the influence of difficult and demanding circumstances? Is there some method which we can use for our mind so that this complete process is stopped at the level of the mind in the first place? Say, you are not physically well today and you do not feel comfortable. So that ...
Objective-To examine the relationship between mood and blood glucose in a 21 day daily diary study. Design-During a home visit, information was gathered from two hundred six persons with type 2 diabetes regarding demographics, disease characteristics and treatment, and depressive symptoms. They had blood drawn at a laboratory, yielding HbA1C. The participants were then telephoned each evening for 21 days and were asked about their positive and negative mood during the past 24 hours. They also tested their blood glucose upon rising in the morning. Main Outcome Measures-The main outcomes measures were positive and negative affect and fasting glucose. Results-Multilevel analyses revealed a relationship between negative affect on one day and morning glucose on the next day. There was no such relationship between positive affect and glucose, nor was there a comparable effect of glucose on one day and either positive or negative affect on the next day. Conclusion-The observed relationship between mood and

1650 words The relationship between exercise and cognitive ability is important, but often not spoken about. As I drove into work, I prepared myself for the busy night shift. I had kissed my husband and teenage daughters goodnight. Leaving them at home watching a family night movie without me was always difficult. However, I had a job to do and I loved that job. I was well rested, in a positive mood, and ready to take on any Level I trauma patient that rolled through the doorway. Or so I thought.... As I opened the doorway into my trauma unit, I immediately sensed that we were preparing for a bad arrival. It was in the air-a sense of hyperalertness and a flurry of meticulous activity evolving. The respiratory therapist was pushing a ventilator into the room. Nurses were methodically setting up a vacant ICU patient room with a rapid volume infuser and a therapeutic hypothermia device and monitoring system. Both were only used in specific, life-threatening cases of massive blood loss and severe brain swelling. The rapid volume infuser could quickly infuse 1 L of I.V. fluid or 1 unit of blood in less than ...
Positive mood is believed to enhance spiritual quality of life (QoL). A mixed-methods research approach (with 4 phases) was used to prospectively examine the relationships between positive mood and spiritual QoL in Hong Kong Chinese adults (18+ years old) with different spiritual backgrounds (Taoism, Buddhism, Christianity, agnostics and atheists) during the Chinese New Year (CNY). Phase 1: a cross-sectional survey (pilot: N=68, main study: N=445) field-tested the spiritual-religious-person belief (SRPB) domain (9 facets) in the WHOQOL-SRPB instrument. Internal consistency (α=.92) and test-retest reliability (α =.97) were good. The spiritual domain has higher correlations than the other QoL domains with the overall spiritual well-being scores (r=.76) of the Spiritual Well-Being Scale and converged with the subscale indices religious well-being (r=.62) and existential well-being (r =.71).Phase 2: focus groups (pilot: N=8, main study: N=37) examined the subjects CNY experiences. Here, the effects of ATD on psychomotor processing, declarative memory, working memory, executive functions and attention are discussed. The most robust finding is that ATD impairs the consolidation of episodic memory for verbal information. Semantic memory appears to be unaffected by ATD although a limited variety of tasks examined effects in this domain. Similarly, evidence suggests ATD does not influence verbal, spatial and affective working memory. Most studies investigating effects on executive functions have produced non-specific or negative findings. In terms of attention, ATD either does not affect or ...
Although self-talk has been shown to be an effective performance enhancement tool, accessing athletes ongoing inner experiences, including self-talk, has proven difficult. This study investigated the feasibility and desirability of using Descriptive Experience Sampling (DES) to sample athletes inner experiences during competition, thus avoiding potential distortions that arise from retrospective reports and questionnaires. Golfers (N = 10) were trained as DES participants in their natural environments; then their experiences were sampled during a golf tournament. More self-talk occurred during tournament play than in natural environments. Self-talk was a frequent but not ubiquitous component of experience during tournament play, inner-speaking self-talk was six times as frequent as speaking aloud self-talk, and effortful System 2 self-talk was rare. The results of this research demonstrate that DES can be feasibly implemented in sport settings and may be a useful approach for researchers ...
Qigong is a Meditative Movement exercise that consists of mindful movements, regulation of breathing and attentional control. In this study we investigated whether Qigong practice might be associated with the affect and flow of its practitioners during the exercise. Although practitioners of Meditative Movement anecdotally describe flow-like experiences and strong effects on affect there are only a few empirical studies that focus on acute effects of Qigong practice on affect, and to our knowledge none on flow. Understanding these phenomena could shed new light on the interrelationship between body movement and the embodied mind. Self-reported affect and flow of qigong practitioners (N = 19) was probed in four qigong sessions, 1 week apart, each lasting about an hour. We used the PANAS (Positive And Negative Affect Schedule) to measure self-reported affect pre- and post-session. Additionally, open-ended questions were used to further inquire the specific quality of the post-session affect. Flow was

After a brief overview of existing research on the relationship between mood and implicit learning, some methodological concerns are addressed and an empirical study is reported. Participants (N = 80) were trained on a serial reaction time (SRT) task. Mood was induced by the target stimuli being pictures of human faces expressing happiness (positive mood condition) or sadness (negative mood condition). Response stimulus interval (RSI) was 0 or 500 ms, traditionally associated with implicit and explicit learning, respectively. Results showed a significant interaction between mood and RSI on the amount of learning: At RSI-500 there was a trend for negative mood to facilitate learning. At RSI-0 mood did not influence learning. Mood also influenced performance on a subsequent generation task. Results are discussed in relationship to theoretical models of the interplay between mood and cognition, as well as to existing, contradictory evidence on the effect of mood on implicit learning ...
Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is a neuromodulation technique with promising results for enhancing cognitive information processes. So far, however, research has mainly focused on the effects of tDCS on cognitive control operations for non-emotional material. Therefore, our aim was to investigate the effects on cognitive control considering negative versus positive material. For this sham-controlled, within-subjects study, we selected a homogeneous sample of twenty-five healthy participants. By using behavioral measures and event related potentials (ERP) as indexes, we aimed to investigate whether a single session of anodal tDCS of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) would have specific effects in enhancing cognitive control for positive and negative valenced stimuli. After tDCS over the left DLPFC (and not sham control stimulation), we observed more negative N450 amplitudes along with faster reaction times when inhibiting a habitual response to happy compared to sad facial
Earlier researchers were able to extract the transient facial thermal features from thermal infrared images (TIRIs) to make binary distinctions between the expressions of affective states. However, effective human-computer interaction would require machines to distinguish between the subtle facial expressions of affective states. This work, for the first time, attempts to use the transient facial thermal features for recognizing a much wider range of facial expressions. A database of 324 time-sequential, visible-spectrum, and thermal facial images was developed representing different facial expressions from 23 participants in different situations. A novel facial thermal feature extraction, selection, and classification approach was developed and invoked on various Gaussian mixture models constructed using: neutral and pretended happy and sad faces, faces with multiple positive and negative facial expressions, faces with neutral and six (pretended) basic facial expressions, and faces with evoked ...

In the multi-component intervention protocol, participants will complete expressive writing exercises where they will be asked to write about difficult life experiences. Following expressive writing, participants will receive stress management skills training to assist them with managing any acute increases in distress that arise from the writing experience. Participants in the attention-control condition will write about neutral topics and complete psychological measures. The overarching goals of this Phase Ib RCT will be to: 1) examine the feasibility and acceptability of the intervention and attention-control; and 2) determine whether intervention participants report reductions in traumatic stress symptoms over the 3 months following randomization. Findings from this Phase Ib trial will inform our efforts to implement a more definitive RCT of this intervention with HIV-positive, methamphetamine-using MSM ...

Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), as defined by Watson et al. (1988), range between 10 and 50 points. Anchors of not at all (10) to most ever (50) were used to rank each measure. Change compares post-treatment to pre-treatment.. Positive Affects included the following terms: Attentive, Active, Alert, Excited, Enthusiastic, Determined, Inspired, Proud, Interested, and Strong. Negative Affects included the following terms: Hostile, Irritable, Ashamed, Guilty, Distressed, Upset, Scared, Afraid, Jittery, and Nervous. The aim of this study was to investigate the positive and depressive mood changes in older volunteers after a three-month voluntary work intervention through a one-group experimental research design. The participants were drawn from the Volunteering, access to Outdoor activities and Wellbeing in older people (VOW) project. The participants were recently retired group, aged 50 and above (N=47, 42 female). Prior training sessions were arranged for the participants before the intervention period. Pre and post assessment of depressive mood was measured through applying the original form of Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and positive mood was measure through the positive affect items of the CED-D sub-scale. Data was analyzed with descriptive statistics, paired t test, general linear model-repeated measure and multiple response frequency analysis. Our main finding observed a non-significant change in positive and depressive mood in the pre-post intervention period. At both ...
Depression and dysphoria have often been cited as emotional states that exacerbate both body size distortion and body dissatisfaction. The specific cause of this association has recently been the subject of empirical investigation. In fact, recent research suggests that women induced into a negative mood state report increased concern about their body image. The role of cognition, however, has not yet been specifically addressed by these investigations. The present study tested whether self-referent cognition acts as a mediator between subjective mood and body image evaluations. Eighty women were induced into either a positive or negative mood through brief exposure to either a self-referent or a non self-referent mood induction procedure (MIP). Self-evaluations for attitudinal and perceptual body image were examined for differential effects related to these MIPs. Results indicated that attitudinal body image self-evaluations and perceptual estimates of actual body size became more derogatory ...
The COVID-19 crisis resulted in a large proportion of the worlds population having to employ social distancing measures and self-quarantine. Given that limiting social interaction impacts mental health, we assessed the effects of quarantine on emotive perception as a proxy of affective states. To this end, we conducted an online experiment whereby 112 participants provided affective ratings for a set of normative images and reported on their well-being during COVID-19 self-isolation. We found that current valence ratings were significantly lower than the original ones from 2015. This negative shift correlated with key aspects of the personal situation during the confinement, including working and living status, and subjective well-being. These findings indicate that quarantine impacts mood negatively, resulting in a negatively biased perception of emotive stimuli. Moreover, our online assessment method shows its validity for large-scale population studies on the impact of COVID-19 related mitigation
For children with arthritis, increases in stress and depressed mood worsen disease symptoms and predict cut backs in social and school activities. DURHAM, N.C. For children with arthritis, increases in stress and depressed mood worsen disease symptoms and predict cut backs in social and school activities, according to a Duke University Medical Center study.. The researchers found mood was a key predictor of flare-ups in symptoms such as pain, stiffness and fatigue. An analysis of daily pain diaries kept by children with arthritis showed as mood worsened, reporting of disease symptoms increased. Similarly, rising daily stress was linked to increased fatigue and pain. The diaries showed that children felt pain, stiffness and fatigue during most days of the two-month study, even with treatment meant to reduce inflammation and pain.. However, the children reported positive mood on more than 90 percent of days despite these symptoms. Even so, because of their disease symptoms, many skipped social ...
Methods Overall 280 male workers of a logistic support company for secure communication and intelligence were included in our study population. We measured work-related stress using the HSE indicator tool, general wellbeing using the Well-being Index (WHO5); affectivity was measured by the short version of the positive and negative affect schedule (PANAS); the frequency corrected QT (QTc) interval on the electrocardiogram was measured using the Bazetts formula; QT index (QTi) value, blood pressure, BMI, and fasting glycaemia were also recorded, as well as medications, lifestyles and comorbidities. Based on the Karaseks taxonomy, we compared high strain jobs, low strain jobs, active jobs and passive jobs with respect to WHO5, PANAS, QTc, QTi, blood pressure, BMI and glycaemia. Group differences were analysed by means of parametric and non parametric tests. ...

Microdosing psychedelic drugs on a regular basis might be a safe way to improve your mood and productivity, according to a new study published in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs.. Microdosing is a practice in which you take a very small or sub-perceptual dose of drugs in order to reap the benefits of the drug without experiencing too much of its consciousness-altering effects. In the recent study, researchers collected reports from more than 1,000 participants in 59 countries, most of whom microdosed once every three days for a month. (The researchers defined microdoses as between 7 to 13 micrograms for LSD; 0.1 to 0.4 grams for dried psilocybin mushrooms.). This microdosing regimen was followed by improvements in negative moods, especially depression, and increases in positive moods. Increased energy, improved work effectiveness, and improved health habits were observed in clinical and nonclinical populations, the researchers wrote. One participant reported: Feeling productive, able to ...

A 20 minute learning reversal decision task will be performed at 9pm on day 1 and 7:30am and 8:30pm on day 2. This computerised task is based on a go/no go paradigm. Initially four two-digit numbers are assigned to the go (response) set and four two-digit numbers are assigned to the no go (no response) set. Participants have a 750ms window to either respond or withhold a response to the number displayed on the screen. A hypothetical money reward/punishment is displayed to allow participants to determine which numbers are in the go set and which are in the no go set. After a number of trials (56, 60, or 64) the response sets are reversed for another 40 trials. A 40 minute driving simulation task (Yorke ...

E.O. Wilson coined the term biophilia to describe humanitys intrinsic fascination with life and life-like processes. A growing body of research shows that building environments that connect people to nature are more supportive of human emotional well-being and cognitive performance than environments lacking these features. Whether natures presence comes from daylight, fresh air, indoor plants, or landscape views, there is growing evidence of positive impacts on building occupants in a wide variety of settings, from offices to hospitals and community spaces.. For instance, research by Roger Ulrich consistently shows that passive viewing of nature through windows or even surrogate contact (through posters or videos) promotes positive moods and reduces stress. Similarly, research by Rachel Kaplan found that workers with window views of trees had a more positive outlook on life than those doing similar work but whose window looked out onto a parking lot. Her study also found that workers with ...

Objectives: Few previous studies have assessed the effects of concomitant administration of multiple potentially psychoactive nutrients. Methods: 95 healthy adult participants consumed either a nutrient enriched breakfast bar (containing α-Linolenic acid, l-tyrosine, l-theanine, vitamins, minerals and 21.5 mg of caffeine) or an isocaloric, macronutrient matched control bar for 56 days. Cognitive function and mood were assessed pre-dose and at 40- and 160-min post-dose on the 1st and 56th day of the intervention period. Results: The results demonstrated acute effects of treatment across post-dose assessments on both assessment days in terms of alertness, and on tasks assessing attention, working and episodic memory and executive function, including cognitively demanding Serial subtraction and Rapid Visual Information Processing tasks. There were no evident chronic effects independent of the breakfast bars acute effects. Discussion: These results demonstrate that a nutrient enriched breakfast bar with

This discovery suggests that some of the innovations of the modern world-fast-paced movies, social media sites with a constant flow of fresh updates-are pushing people toward riskier behavior. An article describing two experiments showing this effect will appear in the March issue of Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.. Thoughts can flow quickly or slowly. If you start your day with a cup of coffee, and an inbox full of e-mails with only a few minutes to check them, you may find your thoughts racing. But, if you skip your morning coffee and start the day staring at a blank wall, you probably wont be thinking that fast. Many aspects of your everyday environment impact the speed of your thinking, says Emily Pronin, a psychology professor at Princeton University, who cowrote the article with Jesse J. Chandler.. In earlier research, Pronin found that peoples thought speed can be altered, and that being led to think fast puts people in a positive mood. ...
