Congress has directed studies of women in the military. The frequency and causes of medical disqualification for female applicants to Army aviator training are unknown. The U.S. Army Aviation Epidemiology Data Register was queried to provide a descriptive analysis of a cohort of female applicants to Army aviator training for calendar years 1987 to 1990. There was a total of 774 female Class 1 and Class 1A applicants to U.S. Army aviator training during calendar years 1987 to 1990. Among the applicants, 41.2 percent were Class 1 (Warrant officer candidates) and 58.8 percent were Class IA (Commissioned officers). Commissioned officer applicants were significantly younger than Warrant officer applicants (p < 0.001, 2-sided, Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic). Among Class 1 applicants, 38.9 percent were medically disqualified compared to 36.7 percent for Class 1A. There was no difference in the risk for medical disqualification between Class 1 and 1A (Relative risk = 1.059, CI sub 95% = O.882, 1.272)

I was still anxious, however, as a new boy walking onto Cranfield campus for day 1 in the new role. Aerospace is at the heart of Cranfield University and offers some unique opportunities as an aerospace university. It is the only university with its own runway, it operates the National Flying Laboratory Test Centre, and it owns its own ventures company , Cranfield Aerospace, with its own regulatory approvals.. The university has a proud aerospace legacy across both airframe and propulsion projects. A Royal Aeronautical Society Heritage plaque outside the School of Manufacturing, Aerospace and Transport reinforces the strong links with those past achievements.. But it is to the future that I am most excited. There is huge opportunity to join all the facilities and knowledge assets together reinforcing Cranfield as one of the premier Aerospace Universities in Europe. Cranfield boasts one of the Rolls Royce UTCs, it has an excellent centre on robotics in manufacturing, it hosts two of the EPSRC ...

By 48th Fighter Wing Public Affairs / Published July 23, 2019 ROYAL AIR FORCE MARHAM, United Kingdom (AFNS) -- Airmen assigned to Hill Air Force Base, Utah, had the opportunity to train Royal Air Force personnel on hot pit refueling procedures at RAF Marham, July 18.. Hot pit refueling is the process in which ground crew Airmen refuel an aircraft while its engines are still running, allowing the aircraft the ability to get back into the air as quickly as possible.. Its amazing that we have been given the opportunity to come to the United Kingdom and train with the Airmen of the RAF, said Senior Airman Anthony Louden, 75th Logistics Readiness Squadron fuels journeyman. If one of our F-35s needs to refuel at an RAF base, we now have the confidence and trust that these guys know what theyre doing.. The U.S. Marine Corps wants a short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft to replace its AV-8B Harrier and F/A-18 Hornet so it can transition to an all-STOVL strike force early in the 21st century. The U.K. Royal Navy and Royal Air Force require a STOVL aircraft to replace their aging Sea Harrier and GR.7, respectively. The Marine Corps is scheduled to acquire 609, while the U. K. Royal Navy will purchase 60 and the Royal Air Force plan to buy 90 aircraft. The short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) variant of the Boeing JSF for the U.S. Marine Corps and U.K. Royal Navy/Air Force employs a direct lift system for short takeoffs and vertical landings with uncompromised up-and-away performance. ...

The Vampire had a couple of vices. The first was that its engine was very slow to accelerate from low speed. This was due to the fact that it had a large and thus heavy centrifugal compressor at the front of its Goblin engine, an engine which was not far removed from the one Sir Frank Whittle, the inventor of the jet engine, had built prior to WWII. On most aircraft, during the approach to landing, one would normally have the engine throttled back. Should one find oneself undershooting the threshold of the runway it would become necessary to open the throttle to arrest the descent. Opening the throttle too rapidly on a Vampire with the engine at a low rpm would produce a loud protesting rumble from behind the pilots seat and a possibility that the engine could stall resulting in a total loss of power and the inevitable crash. The trick was to lower plenty of flap on the final approach to create more drag thus necessitating higher engine rpm to maintain speed. This took the engine out of the ...

With the Royal Air Force now run by second rate CPAs who couldnt get a job in industry, Wittering makes perfect sense. All the MoD has to do is buy a few NO PARKING signs and some traffic enforcement cameras and set them up on the A-1. Obv the Reds wont have the appeal of the PT, SC, SD etc SLUFs of blessed memory but with two or three practice sessions a day, the cameras connected to some cheap 4th world outsourcers, the money will flood in from the poor old motorists in their company Sierras (working for those same firms - see above). Very soon the MoD will have enough money to either retire some Generals or buy a bunch of aircraft more suited to be the pride of the Royal Air Force, the Hawk T2 ...

Air travel has become an important part of modern life. Many more women are now employed in jobs that involve frequent flying, and, in fact, most flight attendants are women of reproductive age. In parallel, with the average age of starting a family steadily increasing, many more pregnant women have medical conditions that might be exacerbated by air travel.. Naturally, the most compelling studies on reproductive risks originate from research in flight attendants. In a cross-sectional survey among current and former flight attendants, Lauria et al 1 did not detect higher rates of miscarriage associated with active work. They did, however, find higher rates of menstrual irregularities among current flight attendants and 60% higher rates of infertility. 1 The lack of risk of spontaneous abortions was corroborated by others. 2 However, flight attendants who experienced spontaneous abortions reported working substantially more flight hours (74 hours per month) than did flight attendants who had live ...

What on earth, you will ask, has all this got to do with writing books for children? Quite a lot and Ill tell you why. It turns the body into a rickety structure and a rickety structure is no good for climbing trees or going for long walks. It prefers to be sitting comfortably in an armchair with a writing board on the lap and the feet resting on a suitcase. Thus it encourages my work and the only work I know is writing books.. Roald Dahl was born in Wales in 1916 and educated in English boarding schools from the age of nine until twenty. During World War II, he was a Royal Air Force fighter pilot in North Africa and Greece. When his active duty was completed, he was transferred to Washington, D.C., where he was asked to write about some of his adventures. A Piece of Cake, his first published work, was an account of a fighter plane crashing in Libya. His first piece of fiction was called The Gremlins, a story about little creatures who make trouble for the Royal Air Force by drilling holes ...
Cabin crew working for Philippine Airlines will wear personal protective gears on board, the uniforms are designed by Filipino couturier Edwin Tan. According to the designer, the protective suits will have the fit and function that will allow cabin crew to perform their duties. Edwin Tan says: The detail is a subtle branding for the airline. We didnt have time to print or embroider so we came up with the idea of mimicking or reworking the flag logo of Philippine Airlines.. We used a non-porous material for the personal protective equipment (PPE). A material with substantial weight to give it a better fall than generic PPEs, he added.. The cabin crew uniform for flights this season will showcase various looks, designs and colors. Eventually, a single, branded look will fill up our flights this season.. ...
Passengers were not the only group concerned about secondhand smoke in the cabin. An SAS poll of flight attendants in 1980 found that smoke bothered 95% of all flight attendants (69% to a great extent and 26% to a certain extent). Finnair representatives reported to Pottorff that smoke accumulation in the back of DC 10s [sic] has been given as a reason their flight attendants dont want to work in the aft cabin, and also that in response to complaints Finnair had reconfigured the aft cabin galley and non-smoking areas on the Airbus in an effort to minimize the impact of ETS in the aft cabin.32. PM recognised the need to neutralise flight attendants concerns and sought the help of flight attendant unions and associations in order to spread its IFAQ message.26,36 Philip Morris had established a relationship with the International Flight Attendants Association (IFAA) in 1987, when PM agreed to be a sponsor of the IFAA 7th World Congress. Editors Note -The links attached here should get you the additional info you need - How Many Variants Of The Boeing 747 Have Been Made? - Simple Flying and here - Boeing 747). Face it, the Boeing 747 changed air travel in many ways: It was the first twin aisle/wide-body commercial airline aircraft, its size enabled a lot more freight to be transported on each flight, and it caused almost every big commercial airport to be increased to accommodate it and the resulting traffic increase. When it went into service in the early 1970s, air travel grew exponentially worldwide. One retired airline employee told IFExpress that the Boeing 747 cut airline passenger flight costs in half! In a sense, the 52 year old plane created the new world of flying that we experience and see today. In fact, we asked a retired Boeing Executive and serious aviation buff to tell us a little about the aircrafts history, and here is what Bob Bogash told IFExpress:. The 747 was the airplane that brought inexpensive air ...
African Americans have always been an integral part of the history of aviation. The grace, excitement, and glamour of flight were no doubt attractive to the many African American aviators who took to the skies in the early part of the twentieth century, but aviation also seemed to present new opportunities and a new way forward in a country still beset by the terrible injustices of Jim Crow. While the achievements of, say, the Tuskegee Airmen may be fairly well known, however, the biographies of many of the earliest African American aviation pioneers are often familiar only to historians and aviation enthusiasts.. The current photo essay, composed by scholar Philip S. Hart in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution, brings the lives of ten African American aviation pioneers into vivid relief. From the earliest licensed African American pilot, Emory Malick, to the saxophone-playing parachutist Hubert Julian, to the globetrotting Bessie Coleman, this essay touches on the full spectrum of ...

The time zones of China refer to the time zone divisions used in China between 1918 and 1949. The first time zone plan was proposed by the Central Observatory (now Beijing Ancient Observatory) of the Beiyang government in Peking (Beijing) in 1918. The proposal divided the country into five time zones: Kunlun (UTC+05:30), Sinkiang-Tibet (UTC+06:00), Kansu-Szechwan (UTC+07:00), Chungyuan (UTC+08:00) and Changpai (UTC+08:30). These time zones were ratified in 1939 by the Nationalist government in the Standard Time Conference, hosted by the Ministry of Interior of Executive Yuan. Because of the Second Sino-Japanese War, it was also stated that Kansu-Szechwan time shall be the sole national time during the war time. After the war in 1945, these five times zones were implemented national widely. In 1949, after the Chinese Civil War, the Central Peoples Government abolished the five time zones and announced to use a single time zone UTC+08:00 named Beijing Time (北京时间). The term Chungyuan ...
Among autumn leaves are the names of fallen WW2 Polish air crew at the Polish War Memorial, on 6th November 2019, in South Ruislip, Northolt, London, England. The Polish War Memorial is in memory of airmen from Poland who served in the Royal Air Force as part of the Polish contribution to World War II. The memorial was designed by Mieczyslaw Lubelski, who had been interned in a forced labour camp during the war. It is constructed from Portland stone with bronze lettering and a bronze eagle, the symbol of the Polish Air Force. The original intention was to record the names of all those Polish airmen who lost their lives while serving during WW2 (a total of 2,408) but there was not enough space for this and, as a compromise, the names of the 1,241 who died in operational sorties are there instead.

Akron, Ohio 44316. Dear Mr. Hofer:. This is in response to your letter of October 28, 1996, regarding placement of the noise dosimeter microphone for measuring the noise exposure of an employee using an airline respirator equipped with a shroud.. You informed us that the airline respirator is required for protecting the employee from carbon dioxide and dust when certain equipment is operated. In addition to these air contaminates, the job produces noise sound levels above the exposure limits. You believe you have exhausted all engineering controls based on current technology, but the noise exposure remains above the permissible limit. During your discussion about engineering controls you mentioned the noise level inside the airline respirator helmet when the airline respirator is included as an engineering control. Please be aware that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) does not consider an airline respirator an engineering control for either air contaminants or noise. Any ...

However, the validity of the arguments promoted to support the termination of the project, should be questioned. With regard to the interception of airborne radar, the requirements of OR / AIR.7 Staff of the Royal Australian Air Force says that the interception of enemy aircraft in all weather conditions is considered as a secondary function. To expedite the consideration of the draft committee on defense research and development work has taken into account that there was no certainty that the corresponding radar equipment will be developed and therefore considers it reasonable to take this risk and to approve the draft. Even in the headquarters of the Royal Air Force of Australia considered that the absence of the radar equipment will not mean the inability to create an aircraft to perform their functions in all weather conditions. Deputy Chief of Staff Koroloevskih Royal Australian Air Force Air Vice-Marshal VE Hancock (the Air-to Vice a Marshall the VE Hancock, DCAS) [22] believed that during ...

October 23, 2012. As a rule, pets travel very well but air travel can be very stressful and traumatic. In order to minimize this, some guidelines should be followed.. The hazards of air travel are usually not in the actual flying, but rather during the down time when your pet is being loaded or unloaded from the airplane, or when it is waiting. Delays can result in extra time spent on the runways before takeoff or after landing. At these times the cargo holds are not pressurized and the surrounding temperature can vary from very hot to very cold. In fact, because of this, some airlines will not permit pets to fly during certain times of the year. For this reason, it is best to contact your airline and make sure that no risk is involved and that they will accept your dog on the flight.. If your pet is small enough, some airlines will allow you to take your dog or cat on board, provided that the carrier fits under the seat in front of you. Check with your air carrier.. It is also a good idea to ...
For a company in a volatile industry and closely exposed to jet fuel prices, a share buyback has a few advantages. First, the airline can turn it on or off without raising red flags as if a dividend was cut. This situation gives American Airlines more flexibility to expand or taper its share repurchases depending on industry conditions and jet fuel costs.. Second, buying back shares reduces the amount of dividends American needs to pay. If the $2 billion share buyback were executed at todays prices, it would save the airline roughly $16 million in annual dividends.. And finally, American Airlines Groups shares trade at a low valuation, even compared with its peers. Using data from 4-Traders.com, American trades at only 4.9 times estimated 2015 earnings, while Delta trades at 9.6 and United Continental trades at 6.3. Even if Americans larger net debt justifies this discount, if other profits are directed to manage it, the valuation gap should close and the the share buyback will have been ...
