Purpose of review: Adolescents with mental health problems often require transition of care from child and adolescent to adult mental health services. This review is a synthesis of current research and policy literature on transition to describe the barriers at the interface between child and adolescent mental health services and adult mental health services and outcomes of poor transition.. Recent findings: Adolescence is a risk period for emergence of serious mental disorders. Child and adolescent mental health services and adult mental health services use rigid age cut-offs to delineate service boundaries, creating discontinuities in provision of care. Adolescent mental health services are patchy across the world. Several recent studies have confirmed that problems occur during transition in diverse settings across several countries. In physical health, there are emerging models of practice to improve the process and outcomes of transition, but there is very little comparable literature in ...

Adolescent mental health think tank participants in Bangkok, Thailand, January 2017. For youth with perinatally acquired HIV, adolescence is a particularly risky time for mental health problems, said Dr. Mellins. Young people have to navigate their health issues in conjunction with the individual, social, and environmental stressors that often go hand in hand with HIV, including stigma, discrimination, parental illness and death, community violence, and poverty.. Unfortunately, there are few studies on adolescent mental health needs in low- to middle-income countries, where the burden of pediatric HIV is greatest, she continued. TREAT Asia could fill a critical gap by identifying mental health needs that can inform treatment options for Asian youth.. A particular crisis affecting the TREAT Asia network sites has been the emergence of deaths due to treatment adherence failure, commented Dr. Ng. Some of these have been understood as suicidal actions, spurring the think tank participants ...

Did you know that globally, depression is one of the leading causes of illness and disability among adolescents, and that suicide is the third leading cause of death in 15-19-year-olds? These statistics come from WHOs 2019 report on adolescent mental health. WHO further elucidates that the consequences of not addressing adolescent mental health conditions extend to adulthood, impairing both physical and mental health and limiting opportunities to lead fulfilling lives as adults.. How has this come to be?. In a deficit-focused society that puts children through extensive ranking processes, children grow up making sense of themselves and their place in the world, through the lens of social ranking, frequently arriving at distorted conclusions about their worthiness, such as I am not good enough. Outer experiences, such as failing a Math test, not being picked in the sports team, or witnessing a conflict between parents at home, are unconsciously processed and evaluated internally by the brain. ...

Although the various transition processes were not well described, thus making comparability across studies difficult, there appears to be some preliminary evidence of a positive impact of structured transition programmes on glycaemic control, clinic attendance and diabetes-related hospitalizations for young people with Type 1 diabetes during healthcare transition. Studies assessing the outcomes of participants who attended transition programmes or interventions, compared with those who did not, found no change in or improved glycaemic control, better attendance rates and fewer diabetes-related hospitalizations post-transition. Well designed randomized controlled trials are now needed to assess this. It is also important that future studies provide in-depth descriptions of transition processes and protocols so that cross-study comparisons can be made. Studies examining the experiences of transition suggest many processes that should be considered in transition programmes as they are likely to ...

Steven Haas research addresses questions that lie at the intersection of social stratification, and the demography of health and aging. In particular his research investigates health as both a cause and a consequence of the social stratification process with particular interests in the processes that produce health disparities over the life course. Prior research projects have explored the relative contribution of early life versus adult factors in determining of trajectories of aging and disability, and the mechanisms linking adolescent health to educational outcomes and labor market success. A current project funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development uses dynamic social network models and simulations to examine peer selection and social influence processes related to adolescent mental health and health behaviors.. ...

HealthPoint Family Care operates 21 school-based health centers in Northern and Central Kentucky in five districts. In 2019, the school-based centers served 2,339 children for medical services and 1,609 for dental services.. School-based health centers in Kentucky are also now more sustainable, thanks to a 2019 change in the states Medicaid regulations which expanded coverage for school-based services.. Its important to note that school-based health centers arent just for students. Centers can be built in a way to allow school employees, families, and others to use them, too. The centers can serve as a health hub for the whole community. School-based health centers can offer communities an added resource for health care. When students can be treated without leaving school, they can quickly return to the classroom to continue learning, and parents dont need to take time off work or arrange transportation to doctors appointments.. In short, school-based health centers can improve access to ...

According to the most recent national census of school-based health centers (SBHCs) conducted by the National Assembly on School-Based Health Care,1 almost 2000 SBHCs are operating in 48 states and territories of the United States, with 57% located in urban communities, 16% in suburban communities, and 27% in rural communities. Approximately 33% of SBHCs are located in high schools, 24% are located in elementary or middle schools, and 43% are located in alternative schools or schools with a combination of grade levels. As SBHCs become more prevalent, pediatricians and other health care providers should be familiar with the role of SBHCs in providing primary care and preventive services to school-aged youth. In addition, it is critical that health care providers working in SBHCs are aware of the importance of supporting the medical home and coordinating care with other primary care providers in the community.. The provision of health services in schools is not a new concept; rather, it was ...

Although assessment of mental disorder particularly in relation to a persons offending is one of the primary services for the Midland Regional Forensic Psychiatric Service, treatment and rehabilitation are also equally significant components, i.e. a person may have offended and this is found to have been as a result of their mental illness, or mental illness coupled with problem behaviours that may result in serious offending.. It is then the goal of our services to successfully treat the persons illness and eventually safely rehabilitate the individual back into their home community. This is often the time when the local adult mental health services and/or general practitioners may become involved in the ongoing care of people (often whom they know well) that are transitioning out of forensic services back into the community with their primary health services to continue the support.. Stigma is a real issue for people with mental health problems. It is therefore important that people who have ...

Downloadable (with restrictions)! This chapter uses the marginal treatment effect (MTE) to unify and organize the econometric literature on the evaluation of social programs. The marginal treatment effect is a choice-theoretic parameter that can be interpreted as a willingness to pay parameter for persons at a margin of indifference between participating in an activity or not. All of the conventional treatment parameters as well as the more economically motivated treatment effects can be generated from a baseline marginal treatment effect. All of the estimation methods used in the applied evaluation literature, such as matching, instrumental variables, regression discontinuity methods, selection and control function methods, make assumptions about the marginal treatment effect which we exposit. Models for multiple outcomes are developed. Empirical examples of the leading methods are presented. Methods are presented for bounding treatment effects in partially identified models, when the marginal
