Sebaceous lymphadenoma is a benign tumour of the salivary gland. Sebaceous lymphadenoma is a tissue diagnosis, e.g. salivary gland biopsy. It may be confused with a number of benign and malignant neoplasms, including Warthin tumour, mucoepidermoid carcinoma and sebaceous lymphadenocarcinoma. The treatment is simple excision and exclusion of a malignant neoplasm. Lymph node Lymphoma Salivary gland neoplasm Mishra, A.; Tripathi, K.; Mohanty, L.; Nayak, M. Warthins tumor primarily affects older individuals (age 60-70 years). There is a slight male predilection according to recent studies. The tumor is slow growing, painless, and usually appears in the tail of the parotid gland near the angle of the mandible. In 5-14% of cases, Warthins tumor is bilateral, but the two masses usually are at different times. Warthins tumor is highly unlikely to become malignant. ...

Ultrasound images demonstrate a well demarcated, hypoechoic mass or a solid mass with multiple anechoic internal areas. On CT, Warthin tumors are homogeneous, enhancing soft tissue densities that contain no calcification. If calcifications are present in a benign appearing parotid mass, the diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma should be favored. Warthin tumors are traditionally located in the posterior aspect of the tail of the parotid gland but the tumors have been known to arise from periparotid lymph nodes. Cyst formation is common and the larger the tumor the greater the chance for cystic change. On MR imaging, the tumors have low T1 and high T2 signal (similar to pleomorphic adenomas). Warthin tumors are rich in mitochondrium and therefore will accumulate Tc-99m pertechnetate on salivary scintigraphy. Unfortunately, oncocytomas and the extremely rare oncocytic carcinoma both accumulate pertechnetate as well. Imaging findings that suggest a malignant parotid mass include; irregular margins, ...
To our knowledge, few reports on the imaging of oncocytic neoplasms of the salivary glands have been published, owing to the rarity of the condition. Sakai et al1 reported an oncocytoma in the deep lobe of the parotid gland that was well-defined and solid on CT. It demonstrated decreased signal intensity on both T1- and T2-weighted MR images, attributed to the high cellularity and low free water content. According to the authors, Warthin tumor, which is a common benign parotid gland tumor in patients older than 60 years, can be differentiated from oncocytoma by its MR imaging appearance. Warthin tumors conversely demonstrate decreased signal intensity on T1-weighted images and increased signal intensity on T2-weighted images.1 Both Warthin tumors and oncocytomas show intense uptake of the nuclide on technetium-Tc99m pertechnetate radionuclide scans of the salivary glands.2. The histomorphologic findings of oncocytes include an enlarged polygonal shape with granular intensely acidophilic ...

N2 - In this case report we describe a rare tumor - Oncocytic variant of Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the submandibular salivary gland with a review of the literature. Oncocytic metaplasia in salivary glands is a benign change that is associated with increasing age and also seen in a few salivary gland neoplasms, which include oncocytoma, Warthins tumor, and the rare, oncocytic carcinoma. Oncocytic differentiation in mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is uncommon. Only twelve well-documented cases of oncocytic MEC have been reported previously all of which occurred in the parotid gland. To the best of our knowledge this is the first case of oncocytic mucoepidermoid carcinoma involving the submandibular salivary gland. The recognition of this ...

E-cadherin is a calcium dependent cell adhesion molecule, important in cell to cell interactions in epithelial tissues. The present study examined E-cadherin expression in normal salivary glands, pleomorphic adenoma, Warthins tumor, mucoepidermoid carcinoma, acinic cell carcinoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma and adenocarcinoma of salivary glands in paraffin sections using a monoclonal antibody (5H9). This study is firstly reported E-cadherin expression in the salivary gland and tumors.,BR,In normal submandibular and parotid gland, E-cadherin staining was confined to the cell membrane of acinar and ductal cells. In excretory ducts, high columnar cells showed the strongest reaction at the basal aspect and ductal basal cells were weakly positive or negative, the basement membrane zone lacked staining. No E-cadherin reaction was observed in modified myoepithelial cells and plasmacytoid cells. In pleomorphic adenoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma, E-cadherin was positive at the lateral cell membrane or ...
1 Medicine student at Otorhinolaringoiatric department at San Pier Damiano Hospital, Faenza (Ravenna), Italy. 2 Head of Otorhinolaringoiatric dept. at San Pier Damiano Hospital, via Portisano 1, 48018 Faenza (Ravenna), Italy. ABSTRACT. Inflammatory pseudotumor of the parotid gland is a benign clinical finding of unknown origin, rarely reporter in literature, with only about twelve cases reported. Clinique and radiograph profiles are similar, and often confuse, with the ones of malign tumors, and only histological investigation can discriminate it. In our report, we describe a case of inflammatory pseudotumor of parotid gland in a 53 years old man, HIV and HCV positive, who accessed to our department for surgical excision of a right parotid mass. Ultrasound, CT scan and preoperatory examination showed a nodularity with regular edge propending for Warthin tumor diagnosis. Histologic examination of surgical excision concluded for a proliferative fibrous lesion with inflammatory components and ...

Discussion: Parotid gland neoplasms are quite rare in the pediatric population but when such a lesion is encountered, a higher percentage (40-50%) will be malignant when compared to the adult population (25-35%); therefore, parotid neoplasms in children must be approached with suspicion (1). The mean age at which malignant parotid gland neoplasms occur in the pediatric population is 13.2 years (2). Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) accounts for an appreciable number of pediatric parotid malignancies; in fact, it is the second most common malignant parotid tumor in this population followed by mucoepidermoid carcinoma (3). Nasse first described the lesion in a 1892 publication in which four cases of parotid adenomas were described (4). Due to the similarity of the tumor cells to normal salivary tissue, the lesions were initially regarded as benign. The benignity of the lesion was questioned in 1953 when Buxton et al. reported three cases of ACC with verified distant metastases (5). Therefore, the lesion ...
Salivary gland tumors most commonly occur in the parotid gland, accounting nearly 85% of all salivary gland tumors. But, 25% of parotid tumors are malignant (cancerous).. Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common type of benign salivary gland tumor. It is typically a slow growing tumor and occur most often in the parotid gland. It is also known as mixed tumor which describes its pleomorphic appearance as opposed to its dual origin from epithelial and myoepithelial elements.. The tumor is usually solitary and presents as a slow growing, painless and firm singular nodal mass. It is usually mobile unless found in the palate and can cause atrophy of the mandibular ramus when located in the parotid gland.. ...

The parotid is a gland near the ear. It helps produce and control the release of saliva. If a tumor forms in the parotid gland, it can press on the facial nerve, causing discomfort and pain. Part or all of the face may be weak or paralyzed. To treat a parotid tumor, part or all of the gland is removed. This surgery is called parotidectomy. This sheet explains the surgery and what to expect.

C.C. Mirestean, Roxana Irina Iancu, C. Buzea, D.T. Iancu. Abstract. Cystic adenoid carcinoma is a rare tumor accounting for less than 1% of all malignant tumors of the head and neck. The presence of another synchronous cancer in the head and neck region is so much a rare case. We present the case of a patient diagnosed with locally advanced neoplasm of the right parotid gland with invasion in the mandible for which surgical treatment was performed. During the post-surgical hospitalization, the patient presented respiratory dysfunction caused by a bulky tumor of the thyroid gland, for which the pathology proved a micro papillary carcinoma. Evidence of a resection margin in contact with tumor of the parotid gland tumor made it necessary a multidisciplinary approach including adjuvant radiotherapy. The patient was also consulted in a nuclear medicine department for metabolic radiation therapy for thyroid cancer. Radiation therapy is part of the adjuvant treatment of head and neck cancers, the risk ...

Introduction The exact incidence of Helicobacter pylori (HP) in childhood is unknown. There is a causal link between HP and development of peptic ulcers, gastric adenocarcinoma and lymphoma. However there is little evidence and guidance on the clinical management of HP in children. The North American Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition report there is no compelling evidence to treat children colonised with HP without histological evidence of gastritis. This reflects the current pathophysiological understanding of cancer development, where inflammation secondary to infection is believed to be the driver of dysplasia and cancer. In our tertiary referral centre current practice stains all paediatric gastric biopsies with Haematoxylin and Eosin stain (H+E) as well as Warthin Starry (WS) stain, specifically for HP-like organisms. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of HP infection in children undergoing endoscopy. We also examined the routine use of special ...
