Acupuncture for the Knee. Acupuncture was applied to patients with total knee arthroplasty starting at day 7 following knee replacement surgery. Acupuncture was administered three times per week until day 21 when the treatment regime was discontinued. Range of motion improved, swelling measurably decreased and pain levels were significantly lower in the acupuncture study group than in the group that did not receive acupuncture therapy. As a result of these findings, the researchers conclude that acupuncture is effective in the post-acute phase of knee rehabilitation following total knee replacement surgery.. This study builds on earlier findings that acupuncture benefits the knee. In other recent research, investigators discovered that acupuncture reduces knee pain and increases range of motion for patients with osteoarthritis. An interesting study, it compared sham acupuncture with modern acupuncture and classical acupuncture techniques. The sham acupuncture, a form of simulated placebo ...

We plan to look at brain activity at the beginning and the end of the study, after 6 sessions of acupuncture treatment. You will be randomly assigned to one of two groups to receive either real or placebo acupuncture.. Acupuncture has been used for many years to help relieve pain. However, it is not clear how acupuncture works. Acupuncture may relieve pain by changing activity in the nervous system. Some studies indicate that acupuncture may relieve the low back pain. However, we need more research to see how well acupuncture works to relieve pain for people with this condition.. In this study, we will measure your brain activity before and after you do exercises to make your back pain worse. We will also measure your brain activity while inflating a pressure cuff device on your lower leg. We will measure this brain activity using a research ...

In the largest experiment on acupuncture for back pain to date, more than 1,100 patients were randomly assigned to receive either acupuncture, sham acupuncture or conventional therapy. For the sham acupuncture, needles were inserted, but not as deeply as for the real thing. The sham acupuncture also did not insert needles in traditional acupuncture points on the body and the needles were not manually moved and rotated.. After six months, patients answered questions about pain and functional ability and their scores determined how well each of the therapies worked. In the real acupuncture group, 47 percent of patients improved. In the sham acupuncture group, 44 percent did. In the usual care group, 27 percent got relief. ...

Laser acupuncture alleviates pain for patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Laser acupuncture employs the use of cold lasers and does not burn the skin or involve the use of needles. TMD disorders include structural abnormalities and muscular disorders of the temporomandibular joint region. TMD is a major cause of orofacial pain. Researchers demonstrate that noninvasive laser acupuncture therapy applied to acupuncture points on the face and hand significantly reduce pain levels.. The acupuncture laser therapy not only reduced pain levels but also improved range of motion. The maximal mouth opening demonstrated clinically significant improvements. There were no side effects. The researchers conclude that "TMD symptoms improved with LAT (laser acupuncture therapy)." The beneficial effects were in both acute and chronic patients with treatment-resistant temporomandibular disorders.. It brings wellness and relief from pain to your body. This can be accomplished by restoring the balance of qi in your body.. Qi is the life force which can be found in everything, both human and non human. From breath to blood, it flows through us, and the movement of qi right through your body is a sensation brought about by acupuncture that you will not want to miss.. When the practitioner of Chinese acupuncture removes the needles from your body you can almost feel the qi moving. The feeling you can experience is like a thread being pulled from your leg, or foot, or whatever from which the needle is being removed. It is a very soothing experience. Simply the Chinese acupuncture is the one through which the flow of qi is being restored by stimulating it using needles.. "Ying and yang" is a philosophy of Dao. You must understand this philosophy in order to understand Chinese acupuncture.. According to Chinese medicine and Chinese acupuncture Dao is the way of life. Dao supports living in ...

Acupuncture is widely used to enhance stroke recovery in Eastern countries. However, a recent randomized controlled trial demonstrated that acupuncture has no specific efficacy in stroke rehabilitation [17]. A meta-analysis of sham-controlled randomized clinical trials concluded that there is insufficient evidence to support the use of acupuncture for functional recovery after stroke [18]. These data have led to ongoing controversy regarding the use of acupuncture therapy after stroke, despite the thousands years of evidence from traditional Chinese medicine practice.. The occupational therapists technique in the manipulation and selection of acupoints is the most important factor that determines the efficacy of acupuncture therapy [19]. In the present study, all occupational therapists are experts with more than ten years of acupuncture practice and plenty of experience with stroke treatments. The acupoints selected in this trial correspond to a complex prescription for stroke therapy ...
Acupuncture is a means of encouraging the body to activate its own healing abilities to restore normal function to problem areas. This is done in modern times by inserting very fine needles to specific points on the body called acupuncture points. The oldest known acupuncture texts are from China and date from 3,000 years ago. However, acupuncture has expanded into other regions and many different approaches exist today, including Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese styles. In recent years, Western medicine has become interested in acupuncture. Acupuncture used alongside orthodox western medicine is sometimes called Medical Acupuncture. Western acupuncturists may use traditional Chinese acupuncture points, trigger points or a combination of points.
The objective was to evaluate whether acupuncture at term can influence cervical ripening and thus reduce the need for postdates induction. On their due dates 45 women were randomized into either an acupuncture group (25) or control group (20).. The women were then examined at two daily intervals for cervical length (measured with vaginal trasonography, cervical mucus and cervical stasis according to Bishops score). The acupuncture group also received acupuncture every two days at the acupuncture points Hegu LI 4 and Sanyinjiao Sp 6.. If women had not delivered after 10 days labour was induced by administering vaginal prostaglandin tablets. The time period from the womans due date to delivery was on average 5 days in the acupuncture group compared to 7.9 days in the control group. Labour was induced in 20 % of women in the acupuncture group compared to 35% in the control group. There were no differences between overall duration of labour and the first and second stage of labour. ...
Acupuncture stimulation at specific points, or trigger points (TPs), elicits sensations called de-qi. De-qi sensations relate to the clinical efficacy of the treatment. However, it is neither clear whether de-qi sensations are associated with TPs, nor clear whether acupuncture effects on brain activity are associated with TPs or de-qi. We recorded cerebral hemodynamic responses during acupuncture stimulation at TPs and non-TPs by functional near-infrared spectroscopy. The acupuncture needle was inserted into both TPs and non-TPs within the right extensor muscle in the forearm. Typical acupuncture needle manipulation was conducted eight times for 15 s. The subjects pressed a button if they felt a de-qi sensation. We investigated how hemodynamic responses related to de-qi sensations induced at TPs and non-TPs. We observed that acupuncture stimulations producing de-qi sensations significantly decreased the Oxy-Hb concentration in the supplementary motor area (SMA), pre-supplementary motor area, ...

Natural News) Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years. Ancient Chinese practitioners used it to treat a variety of ailments, especially those which caused pain. In the U.S., the rise of holistic treatments has revived the demand for acupuncture. It is currently used to treat multiple conditions ranging from digestive problems to sleep disorders. Now, studies reveal that acupuncture could also be used to address polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). A meta-analysis published in the journal Medicine evaluated the effects of acupuncture treatment on PCOS. A statistical analysis of the results of 27 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) revealed that acupuncture can improve hormone levels when used together with PCOS medication. It also improved fasting insulin levels in four different trials.. To search for studies with relevant data, the researchers used several databases and screened 1,024 articles related to acupuncture and PCOS. They found 27 RCTs that passed their criteria for analysis; ...

Background The mechanisms of action underlying acupuncture, including acupuncture point specificity, are not well understood. In the previous decade, an increasing number of studies have applied fMRI to investigate brain response to acupuncture stimulation. Our aim was to provide a systematic overview of acupuncture fMRI research considering the following aspects: 1) differences between verum and sham acupuncture, 2) differences due to various methods of acupuncture manipulation, 3) differences between patients and healthy volunteers, 4) differences between different acupuncture points. Methodology/Principal Findings We systematically searched English, Chinese, Korean and Japanese databases for literature published from the earliest available up until September 2009, without any language restrictions. We included all studies using fMRI to investigate the effect of acupuncture on the human brain (at least one group that received needle-based acupuncture). 779 papers were identified, 149 met the
Acupuncture can reduce migraine headaches compared to both sham (placebo) acupuncture and usual care, finds a new trial from China published by The BMJ today.. The researchers say doctors should provide information about acupuncture as an option when discussing preventive treatment strategies with patients.. More than one billion people worldwide are affected by migraine. It has considerable impact on quality of life and imposes a substantial burden on society. For people with frequent migraines, preventive treatments to reduce headache frequency are available, but not all patients respond well to drug therapy and many prefer to avoid it. Evidence for the benefit of acupuncture on migraine prevention has been mixed.. So a team of researchers based in China set out to compare the effectiveness of manual (real) acupuncture with sham (placebo) acupuncture or usual care.. Their findings are based on 147 patients (average age 37) with a history of migraine without aura who were recruited from seven ...

The acupuncture technique has evolved from an exotic curiosity to a form of treatment, over the years. It stems from medical practices of the Traditional Chinese culture. In this technique, the Acupuncturist in Brampton will insert fine needles into specific parts of your body.. Research and various studies carried out in determining the efficacy of this medical protocol shows that Acupuncture works by correcting the energy imbalances in ones body. According to the Chinese belief, this technique is used to modify ones chi or qi, i.e. the flow of energy in the body. It has been widely employed in China, as a traditional technique to treat and prevent diseases.. How does it Work? When you visit your trusted therapist for an Acupuncture in Brampton appointment, he or she is going to use fine needles, heat, pressure and other treatments, e.g. electric stimulation, that are applied to different parts of your skin. Even though needles are a standard tool of the trade, in acupuncture therapy, the ...

The total dose of PCA used within the first 24 hours was 30% - 35% less in the acupuncture group and the electro-acupuncture group when compared with the control group, which was indicated in statistical significance. However, there was no significant difference between the acupuncture group and the electro-acupuncture group. The electro-acupuncture groups and the acupuncture groups pain scores were lower than the control groups within the first 2 hours. Both were statistically significant. However, two hours later, there were no significant differences of the visual analogue scale (VAS) scores between either of the treatment groups and the control group. Finally, the incidence of opioid-related side effects, such as dizziness, was less in the acupuncture group and electro-acupuncture group than in the ...

... is a treatment based on traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese acupuncture usually is done by putting very thin needles into the skin at certain points on the body to produce energy flow along the bodys meridians; other types of acupuncture may use heat, pressure, or mild electrical current to stimulate energy flow along these meridians.. Some people may use acupuncture to treat substance use disorder, fibromyalgia, back pain, and many other conditions. There is some evidence that acupuncture may stimulate the production of the bodys natural painkillers (endorphins, serotonin, and acetylcholine).. In general, acupuncture is safe when done by a certified acupuncturist. A state license ensures that the acupuncturist has a certain level of training and follows certain practice guidelines, such as using sterilized needles that are disposed of after one use. In the United States, acupuncture needles are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as therapeutic ...
And, as you might expect, acupuncturists and other supporters of superstitious and pseudoscientific treatments are proclaiming that they have been vindicated.. The study looked at 29 randomized clinical trials of acupuncture for various sorts of pain, including back, neck and headache. It looked at studies that used sham and no-acupuncture controls. Sham acupuncture is where the patient thinks they are getting acupuncture, but typically the needle is not being inserted, merely pressed against the skin. Vickers et al. reported that when acupuncture was compared with no- acupuncture, reported reduction in pain was fairly large, about 30%. However, crucially for supporters of acupuncture, they reported a moddest improvement of pain when real acupuncture was compared with sham acupuncture.. And as such, the media reports of this finding (with a few honourable exceptions) have followed the abstracts conclusion that acupuncture is a valid treatment option for chronic pain. The primary goal of acupuncture therapy is to provide breathing support, reduce inflammation, and remove the accumulation of fluid from the lung alveoli. Recent research shows that TCM, and more specifically acupuncture, may be valuable treatment options in managing the symptoms of coronavirus-induced ARDS. Differing from western medicine, acupuncture sessions treat the patients body as a whole, stimulate the self-regulating function of the lungs and help restore self-rehabilitation ability to achieve full recovery.. Acupuncture works by stimulating the blood flow, which carries and transports oxygen and nutrients to every cell in the body. It also helps reduce inflammation and decrease the production of fluid in the lungs. The increase in blood flow and reduced inflammation boosts the immune system and dilates the bronchioles that help relax respiratory muscles and improve breathing.. There are specific acupuncture points for treating lung diseases and improving the breathing function of the ...
BACKGROUND: In a large randomised trial in patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR), acupuncture was superior compared to sham acupuncture and rescue medication. The aim of this paper is to describe the characteristics of the trials participating physicians and to describe the trial intervention in accordance with the STRICTA (Standards for Reporting Interventions in Controlled Trials of Acupuncture) guidelines, to make details of the trial intervention more transparent to researchers and physicians. METHODS: ACUSAR (ACUpuncture in Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis) was a three-armed, randomised, controlled multicentre trial. 422 SAR patients were randomised to semi-standardised acupuncture plus rescue medication (RM, cetirizine), sham acupuncture plus RM or RM alone. We sent a questionnaire to trial physicians in order to evaluate their characteristics regarding their education about and experience in providing acupuncture. During the trial, acupuncturists were asked to diagnose all of their ...
Acupuncture as a therapeutic intervention has been widely used for treatment of many pathophysiological disorders. For achieving improved therapeutic effects, relatively thick acupuncture needles have been frequently used in clinical practice with, in turn, enhanced stimulation intensity. However due to the discomforting nature of the larger-diameter acupuncture needles there is considerable interest in developing advanced acupuncture therapeutical techniques that provide more comfort with improved efficacy. So motivated, we have developed a new class of acupuncture needles, porous acupuncture needles (PANs) with hierarchical micro/nano-scale conical pores upon the surface, fabricated via a simple and well known electrochemical process, with surface area approximately 20 times greater than conventional acupuncture needles. The performance of these high-surface-area PANs is evaluated by monitoring the electrophysiological and behavioral responses from the in vivo stimulation of Shenmen (HT7) ...
From the desk of Jessica L. Molleur, Lic.Ac. DNBAO and Erin Walker, Lic. Ac…. We speak with many people about acupuncture; what it is, what it isnt. More specifically, moms-to-be want to know if its safe and effective as they get closer to having their baby (or babies!). Weve picked the three most popular questions and answered them for all to see!. Q: Is acupuncture effective for those trying to conceive or diagnosed infertility?. A: Yes. Acupuncture is effective for those trying to conceive or diagnosed infertility. This is an area of specialty for both of our acupuncturists on staff and is one of the top 10 reasons that OBs/endocrinologists refer to acupuncturists. There are several research studies documenting the beneficial affects of acupuncture for fertility. If you are considering acupuncture for fertility, please schedule as soon as possible so that the acupuncturist can complete your health history, an initial acupuncture session, and assess what will be appropriate in planning ...
This is me undergoing my daily acu-laser treatment. (I had no idea I look so sci-fi.) I asked Dr. Rosenfarb if he could provide an overview of how his laser acupuncture treatment works. Heres what he had to say.. Laser Acupuncture works by using photo-biomodulation (laser-light impulses) at specific acupuncture points around the body. It is believed that the bodys organ meridians in the Chinese Meridians exist at a light frequency. We use Acu-laser or "light needle" as a non-invasive way to stimulate certain acupuncture points that may benefit vision and improve function.. My general theory is that acupuncture works more on the Qi (energy) and Blood (circulation) level. Acupuncture opens the blockages and increases the flow of Qi and Blood to the eyes (branch symptom) and is also used to correct/support the underlying cause (root issue). Acupuncture does not add anything or take away from the body, it just helps regulate function. If the eyes receive oxygen, nutrients, fluids, glucose for ...
OBJECTIVE: Although manual and electrical stimulation are frequently used in acupuncture analgesia, studies comparing both stimulation modalities are contradictory. This blinded, placebo-controlled cross-over study investigates effects of brief manual and electrical acupuncture stimulation on pressure pain detection thresholds (PPDT) compared with nonpenetrating sham acupuncture (NPSA). INTERVENTIONS: Forty-five healthy volunteers received electrically and manually stimulated acupuncture and NPSA at large intestine 4 and 11 in randomized order. PPDT was assessed using pressure algometry at the second toe before; during; and 0, 2, and 5 minutes after each intervention. Stimulus intensity during stimulation was rated on a 0-10 numeric rating scale (NRS). RESULTS: PPDT rose from 316 kPa (standard deviation [SD] 149) to 398 kPa (SD 157) and 405 kPa (SD 184) immediately after acupuncture with manual and electrical stimulation, respectively, and to 380 kPa (SD 175) and 367 kPa (SD 168) after NPSA with ...

Women who are looking to conceive should consider acupuncture treatments. Chinese researchers are discovering powerful ways to "jumpstart" the meridians on a womans body to accelerate the process of natural hormone balancing in her body. Acupuncture techniques can be applied more effectively than drugs to boost fertility with no negative results or side effects. Acupuncture is a healing art derived from ancient Chinese medicine. Acupuncture involves the application of fine needles, inserted at specific locations on the body, to stimulate the bodys natural healing processes.. An investigation led by Dr. Zhiguang Hu at the Mawangdui Hospital in Hunan Province finds that acupuncture techniques can increase a womans chances of pregnancy by 43.3 percent. In the study, acupuncture was twice more effective than pharmaceutical treatments. The women benefited the most when given a 30 minute acupuncture session each day during their menstrual cycle.. The researchers noted that acupuncture had a ...

The crucial symptom of atopic eczema is itch. Acupuncture has been shown to exhibit a significant effect on experimental itch; however, studies focusing on clinical itch in atopic eczema and corresponding mechanisms are lacking. The study design was a unicenter, single-blinded (observer), prospective, randomized clinical pilot trial with an additional experimental part. In 10 patients with atopic eczema, we investigated the effect of acupuncture treatment (n = 5) compared to no treatment (n = 5) on itch intensity and in vitro basophil CD63 expression upon allergen stimulation (house dust mite and timothy grass pollen) in a pilot trial. Results: Mean itch intensity in a visual analog scale was rated significantly lower in the acupuncture group (-25% ± 26% [day 15-day 0]; -24% ± 31% [day 33-day 0]) than in the control group (15% ± 6% [day 15-day 0]; 29% ± 9% [day 33-day 0]). From day 0 (before treatment) to day 15 (after 5 acupuncture treatments) as well as day 33 (after 10 acupuncture ...
In contrast, the Western explanation of acupuncture incorporates modern concepts of neuroscience and researchers at the National Institute of Health are studying at least three possible explanations for how acupuncture works:. Opioid release. During acupuncture, endorphins that are part of your bodys natural pain-control system may be released into your central nervous system - your brain and spinal cord. This reduces pain much like taking a pain medication.. Spinal cord stimulation. Acupuncture may stimulate the nerves in your spinal cord to release pain-suppressing neurotransmitters. This has sometimes been called the "gate theory.". Blood flow changes. Acupuncture needles may increase the amount of blood flow in the area around the needle. The increased blood flow may supply additional nutrients or remove toxic substances, or both, promoting healing.. If you would like to discuss whether acupuncture is a suitable treatment for your symptoms please feel free to get in touch ...
