in reply: As I attempted to briefly summarize in the article, research on acupuncture is difficult. An excellent resource on acupuncture research is the book Acupuncture Research: Strategies for Establishing an Evidence Base.1 Most research protocols standardize acupuncture therapy in a way that does not mirror the usual practice of acupuncture, which is individualized based on many factors (e.g., Chinese rather than Western medicine diagnosis; acupuncturists training and experience). For many pain problems, it is not unusual for nontraditional modern acupuncture techniques such as percutaneous nerve stimulation and intramuscular stimulation (sometimes referred to as dry needling) to be combined with, or used instead of, traditional Qi-moving acupuncture treatment. Sham acupuncture usually involves skin puncture with acupuncture needles at locations different from standard acupuncture. Because the mechanisms of acupuncture are not well understood, sham treatments that include skin puncture ...

Adverse effects such as fatigue, pain, erythema, nausea and vomiting are commonly known in patients undergoing irradiation (RT) alone or in combination with chemotherapy (RCHT). Patients suffering from these symptoms are limited in their daily life and their quality of life (QOL) is often reduced. As addressed in several trials, acupuncture can cause amelioration of these specific disorders. Especially for pain symptoms, several groups have shown efficacy of acupuncture. To what extent the difference between traditional acupuncture (verum acupuncture) and false acupuncture (sham acupuncture) is in reducing side effects and improvement of QOL is not clear. ROSETTA is a prospective randomized phase II trial (version 1.0) to examine the efficacy of traditional acupuncture in patients with RT-related side effects. In the experimental (verum) arm (n = 37) an experienced acupuncture-trained person will treat dedicated acupuncture points. In the control (sham) arm (n = 37) sham acupuncture will be performed to
Acupuncture for the Knee. Acupuncture was applied to patients with total knee arthroplasty starting at day 7 following knee replacement surgery. Acupuncture was administered three times per week until day 21 when the treatment regime was discontinued. Range of motion improved, swelling measurably decreased and pain levels were significantly lower in the acupuncture study group than in the group that did not receive acupuncture therapy. As a result of these findings, the researchers conclude that acupuncture is effective in the post-acute phase of knee rehabilitation following total knee replacement surgery.. This study builds on earlier findings that acupuncture benefits the knee. In other recent research, investigators discovered that acupuncture reduces knee pain and increases range of motion for patients with osteoarthritis. An interesting study, it compared sham acupuncture with modern acupuncture and classical acupuncture techniques. The sham acupuncture, a form of simulated placebo ...
Paralysis After Traumatic Brain Injury: Can Acupuncture Help?. Can acupuncture help patients with limb paralysis caused by traumatic brain injury (TBI)? A new study suggests it has promising potential. In the largest experiment on acupuncture for back pain to date, more than 1,100 patients were randomly assigned to receive either acupuncture, sham acupuncture or conventional therapy. For the sham acupuncture, needles were inserted, but not as deeply as for the real thing. The sham acupuncture also did not insert needles in traditional acupuncture points on the body and the needles were not manually moved and rotated.. After six months, patients answered questions about pain and functional ability and their scores determined how well each of the therapies worked. In the real acupuncture group, 47 percent of patients improved. In the sham acupuncture group, 44 percent did. In the usual care group, 27 percent got relief. ...

Acupuncture is widely used to enhance stroke recovery in Eastern countries. However, a recent randomized controlled trial demonstrated that acupuncture has no specific efficacy in stroke rehabilitation [17]. A meta-analysis of sham-controlled randomized clinical trials concluded that there is insufficient evidence to support the use of acupuncture for functional recovery after stroke [18]. These data have led to ongoing controversy regarding the use of acupuncture therapy after stroke, despite the thousands years of evidence from traditional Chinese medicine practice.. The occupational therapists technique in the manipulation and selection of acupoints is the most important factor that determines the efficacy of acupuncture therapy [19]. In the present study, all occupational therapists are experts with more than ten years of acupuncture practice and plenty of experience with stroke treatments. The acupoints selected in this trial correspond to a complex prescription for stroke therapy ...
Acupuncture is a means of encouraging the body to activate its own healing abilities to restore normal function to problem areas. This is done in modern times by inserting very fine needles to specific points on the body called acupuncture points. The oldest known acupuncture texts are from China and date from 3,000 years ago. However, acupuncture has expanded into other regions and many different approaches exist today, including Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese styles. In recent years, Western medicine has become interested in acupuncture. Acupuncture used alongside orthodox western medicine is sometimes called Medical Acupuncture. Western acupuncturists may use traditional Chinese acupuncture points, trigger points or a combination of points.

The objective was to evaluate whether acupuncture at term can influence cervical ripening and thus reduce the need for postdates induction. On their due dates 45 women were randomized into either an acupuncture group (25) or control group (20).. The women were then examined at two daily intervals for cervical length (measured with vaginal trasonography, cervical mucus and cervical stasis according to Bishops score). The acupuncture group also received acupuncture every two days at the acupuncture points Hegu LI 4 and Sanyinjiao Sp 6.. If women had not delivered after 10 days labour was induced by administering vaginal prostaglandin tablets. The time period from the womans due date to delivery was on average 5 days in the acupuncture group compared to 7.9 days in the control group. Labour was induced in 20 % of women in the acupuncture group compared to 35% in the control group. There were no differences between overall duration of labour and the first and second stage of labour. ...
Acupuncture stimulation at specific points, or trigger points (TPs), elicits sensations called de-qi. De-qi sensations relate to the clinical efficacy of the treatment. However, it is neither clear whether de-qi sensations are associated with TPs, nor clear whether acupuncture effects on brain activity are associated with TPs or de-qi. We recorded cerebral hemodynamic responses during acupuncture stimulation at TPs and non-TPs by functional near-infrared spectroscopy. The acupuncture needle was inserted into both TPs and non-TPs within the right extensor muscle in the forearm. Typical acupuncture needle manipulation was conducted eight times for 15 s. The subjects pressed a button if they felt a de-qi sensation. We investigated how hemodynamic responses related to de-qi sensations induced at TPs and non-TPs. We observed that acupuncture stimulations producing de-qi sensations significantly decreased the Oxy-Hb concentration in the supplementary motor area (SMA), pre-supplementary motor area, ...

Objective : Acupuncture (from the Latin acus, needle, and pungere, to prick) is a technique of inserting and manipulating fine needles at specific points on the body. As a placebo acupuncture needle device was developed based on the visual impact of needling, it has been raised that it is useful only when acupuncture points and needling are visible to subjects. To examine the visual factor of the placebo acupuncture, the present study was aimed to compare the blinding index of the verum and placebo acupuncture between masked and unmasked situation. Methods : Thirty-six patients were randomly alloted to be stimulated with a verum or placebo acupuncture in a cross-over design. They were asked to guess a right answer whether they were stimulated with the verum or placebo acupuncture at LI4 in an unmasked or masked situation. The penetrating, pain, and deqi sensations were also measured after the stimulation using modified visual analogue scale. Results : The correct answer rate of the placebo ...
Natural News) Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years. Ancient Chinese practitioners used it to treat a variety of ailments, especially those which caused pain. In the U.S., the rise of holistic treatments has revived the demand for acupuncture. It is currently used to treat multiple conditions ranging from digestive problems to sleep disorders. Now, studies reveal that acupuncture could also be used to address polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). A meta-analysis published in the journal Medicine evaluated the effects of acupuncture treatment on PCOS. A statistical analysis of the results of 27 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) revealed that acupuncture can improve hormone levels when used together with PCOS medication. It also improved fasting insulin levels in four different trials.. To search for studies with relevant data, the researchers used several databases and screened 1,024 articles related to acupuncture and PCOS. They found 27 RCTs that passed their criteria for analysis; ...

Background The mechanisms of action underlying acupuncture, including acupuncture point specificity, are not well understood. In the previous decade, an increasing number of studies have applied fMRI to investigate brain response to acupuncture stimulation. Our aim was to provide a systematic overview of acupuncture fMRI research considering the following aspects: 1) differences between verum and sham acupuncture, 2) differences due to various methods of acupuncture manipulation, 3) differences between patients and healthy volunteers, 4) differences between different acupuncture points. Methodology/Principal Findings We systematically searched English, Chinese, Korean and Japanese databases for literature published from the earliest available up until September 2009, without any language restrictions. We included all studies using fMRI to investigate the effect of acupuncture on the human brain (at least one group that received needle-based acupuncture). 779 papers were identified, 149 met the
Acupuncture can reduce migraine headaches compared to both sham (placebo) acupuncture and usual care, finds a new trial from China published by The BMJ today.. The researchers say doctors should provide information about acupuncture as an option when discussing preventive treatment strategies with patients.. More than one billion people worldwide are affected by migraine. It has considerable impact on quality of life and imposes a substantial burden on society. For people with frequent migraines, preventive treatments to reduce headache frequency are available, but not all patients respond well to drug therapy and many prefer to avoid it. Evidence for the benefit of acupuncture on migraine prevention has been mixed.. So a team of researchers based in China set out to compare the effectiveness of manual (real) acupuncture with sham (placebo) acupuncture or usual care.. Their findings are based on 147 patients (average age 37) with a history of migraine without aura who were recruited from seven ...

The acupuncture technique has evolved from an exotic curiosity to a form of treatment, over the years. It stems from medical practices of the Traditional Chinese culture. In this technique, the Acupuncturist in Brampton will insert fine needles into specific parts of your body.. Research and various studies carried out in determining the efficacy of this medical protocol shows that Acupuncture works by correcting the energy imbalances in ones body. According to the Chinese belief, this technique is used to modify ones chi or qi, i.e. the flow of energy in the body. It has been widely employed in China, as a traditional technique to treat and prevent diseases.. How does it Work? When you visit your trusted therapist for an Acupuncture in Brampton appointment, he or she is going to use fine needles, heat, pressure and other treatments, e.g. electric stimulation, that are applied to different parts of your skin. Even though needles are a standard tool of the trade, in acupuncture therapy, the ...

Acupuncture is a treatment based on traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese acupuncture usually is done by putting very thin needles into the skin at certain points on the body to produce energy flow along the bodys meridians; other types of acupuncture may use heat, pressure, or mild electrical current to stimulate energy flow along these meridians.. Some people may use acupuncture to treat substance use disorder, fibromyalgia, back pain, and many other conditions. There is some evidence that acupuncture may stimulate the production of the bodys natural painkillers (endorphins, serotonin, and acetylcholine).. In general, acupuncture is safe when done by a certified acupuncturist. A state license ensures that the acupuncturist has a certain level of training and follows certain practice guidelines, such as using sterilized needles that are disposed of after one use. In the United States, acupuncture needles are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as therapeutic ...
Traditional Chinese Medicine is a medical system that dates back nearly 4,000 years. Auricular acupuncture was first mentioned around 500 B.C. in the Yellow Emperors Classic of Internal Medicine, which is the equivalent of the Bible for TCM practitioners. However, the method in which auricular acupuncture is practiced today is actually based upon discoveries that occurred in France in the 1950s. Modern auricular acupuncture is based upon the work done by Dr. Paul Nogier of France.. Auricular acupuncture is the stimulation of the external ear for the diagnosis and treatment of health conditions. These health conditions may be taking place anywhere throughout the body. The stimulation of these acupuncture points can be done manually, with an acupuncture needle, a laser, magnets or ear seeds. Regardless of the means of stimulation, auricular acupuncture can be a very powerful addition to regular acupuncture treatments.. The current form of auricular acupuncture came about after Dr. Nogier noticed ...
Needle acupuncture, originating from China, is used in Scandinavia and in other Western countries as a treatment for infantile colic. The treatment is controversial, as infants and toddlers are unable to consent to treatment. We aimed to evaluate the method and the efficacy of acupuncture treatments for infantile colic.. Methods. We did a pilot study to assess the feasibility of our proposed design of a trial to assess the efficacy of percutaneous needle acupuncture. We carried out a prospective, blinding-validated, randomised controlled multi-centre trial in general practice. We did a systematic review and a blinding test validation based on individual patient data from all randomised controlled trials. We did a qualitative study in Shanghai to explore contemporary practices and clinical recommendations regarding the use of acupuncture for infants.. Results. We improved the standardisation of the intervention procedure and changed the blinding procedure as a result of the pilot study.. We found ...

A standardised anaesthesia regimen was used. Phenobarbital sodium (0.1 g intrasmuscular) and atropine (0.5 mg intrasmuscular) were administered for premedication half an hour before entering the operating theatre. Standard monitors were used during the intraoperative period to measure pulse oxygen saturation, heart rate, blood pressure and end-tidal CO2 gas tension. Anaesthesia was induced with midazolam (0.06-0.10 mg/kg intravenous (IV)), fentanyl (0.004-0.008 mg/kg IV), cisatracurium (0.15-0.20 mg/kg IV) and etomidate (0.20-0.40 mg/kg IV). Anaesthesia was maintained with propofol (4-8 mg/kg/h IV), sevoflurane (0.8-2%, inspired concentration) and atracurium (5 mg/kg/h IV) after endotracheal intubation. The pneumoperitoneum pressure range was set to 14-16 mm Hg.. After induction of anaesthesia, levobupivacaine 0.25% (3 mL per incision, a total of 9 mL per patient) was infiltrated in all patients before skin incisions for trocar insertion. BREAST CANCER PATIENTS using ACUPUNCTURE for FATIGUE - 70% Gwen Wyatt, a professor with the College of Nursing said There are more than two million breast cancer survivors today, and persistent cancer-related fatigue is one of the most common and distressing symptoms and is associated with decreased quality of life, poor sleep quality and depression. Wyatt said pilot research has shown self-administered acupressure on ACUPUNCTURE POINTS can significantly decrease fatigue by as much as 70 percent in cancer survivors, as well as improve sleep quality. There are few treatment options for persistent cancer-related fatigue, and these costly treatments often require a trained practitioner or have unacceptable side effects, Wyatt said. On the other hand, self-administered acupressure on ACUPUNCTURE POINTS is nontoxic, inexpensive and requires minimal instruction. It appears to be a promising treatment for persistent fatigue. TY - JOUR. T1 - Necrotizing fasciitis after acupuncture in a patient with aplastic anemia. AU - Hsieh, Ru Lan. AU - Huang, Chien Hsien. AU - Uen, Wu Ching. PY - 2011/9/1. Y1 - 2011/9/1. N2 - Objectives: The objective of this study was to describe a serious complication of acupuncture treatment in a high-risk patient with aplastic anemia. Design: A 44-year-old woman with aplastic anemia experienced right calf pain after running. After poor results with physical therapy, she received needle acupuncture for pain relief. However, aggravated pain with swelling of the right calf developed 2 days later. Results: On admission, she had a temperature of 38.8°C, a white blood cell count of 500/μL, and hemoglobin of 5.7g/dL. Ultrasound and computed tomography scans showed swelling of the right calf muscle fascia, and aspiration drew out Staphylococcus infection. The symptoms improved after treatment with parenteral antibiotics. Conclusions: This case illustrates that necrotizing fasciitis must be ...
This study was conducted on a human cadaveric hand. A 25×40 mm disposable stainless steel acupuncture needle was inserted at PC8 (Laogong), SI3 (Houxi) and TE4 (Yangchi), based on an acupuncture text.4 PC8 is situated within the interosseous muscle space between the second and third metacarpal bones, next to the metacarpophalangeal joint (MCPJ). After making a loose fist, SI3 is found proximal to the fifth MCPJ, at the end of the transverse crease of the hypothenar muscle, on the dividing line between the red and white flesh. TE4 is located on the transverse crease of the dorsum of the wrist during extension, in the depression lateral to the tendon of extensor digitorum communis. Three insertions were performed at each acupuncture point to ensure consistency of needling location. X-rays were performed using a mini C-arm (Orthoscan mobile DI). Posteroanterior (PA) and lateral views of the cadaveric hand were obtained after needle insertion ...

Curious about acupuncture, but not crazy about needles? Electroacupuncture may be in your future. Instead of needles, the technique uses a small electric current and conductive pads to stimulate acupuncture points. You just feel a warm vibration and a slight tingle, and thats it, says electroacupuncturist George A. Ulett, M.D., clinical professor of psychiatry at the Missouri Institute of Mental Health in St. Louis. Dr. Ulett has been studying acupuncture since a trip to China in the late Sixties, and practicing electroacupuncture for almost 20 years. In two recent studies (Southern Medical Journal, 12/98; Biological Psychiatry, 7/15/98) he reports that the procedure can greatly reduce--and in some cases eliminate--the need to take drugs for arthritis pain, backaches, migraines, depression, anxiety, addictions, digestive disorders, and other ailments. Often called evidence-based acupuncture, electroacupuncture bypasses the traditional Eastern notion that acupuncture works by correcting ...

Acupuncture has been successfully used for clinical treatment in East Asian countries for numerous centuries. The effectiveness of the treatment, however, is still unclear and many challenges remain in proving its medicinal effect with scientific rigor. Since its introduction to the Western world in the early 1970s, the effect of acupuncture has been discussed, whether favorably or critically, along with newly published neuro-biological theories. Melzack et al.[1] presented the theory of gate control, which was an early model of acupuncture-induced pain suppression[1, 2] and was eventually developed into the Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation method (TENS)[3]. Le Bars discussed the idea of Diffuse Noxious Inhibitory Controls (DNIC)[4]. Bing argued that there was an affinity between the acupuncture-induced pain suppression effect and DNIC; yet the same authors deny the singular quality of acupuncture, implying that acupuncture stimulation is nothing but a kind of noxious inhibitory ...
Infantile colic is a common painful clinical condition associated with signs of distended intestines and an increase in colon peristalsis. However, clinical documentation of observed gastrointestinal functions in the condition is still lacking. Even though the ailment is common, no clear treatment guidelines exist. While acupuncture with minimal stimulation has been shown to be effective in reducing crying behaviour of infants suffering from colic, the documented effect of acupuncture on gastrointestinal function in children with infantile colic is scarce. This case series study aims to document the symptoms of routinely rated gastrointestinal function and the changes in these symptoms after minimal acupuncture in a larger group of children with infantile colic. This study included 913 infants with normal weights, and lengths at birth. The infants mean age was 5.4 weeks when the observations started, and had colic symptoms since two weeks after birth. How does our clinic use Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat Bells Palsy? There are several natural remedies that can quicken the recovery process of Bells Palsy.. Acupuncture has been used in China for thousands of years to assist in treatment. First, acupuncture can reduce inflammation on the facial nerves and clear the pathogenic factors. Secondly, it can be used to increase blood flow and promote healing to the affected area. Special styles of acupuncture like Zhus Scalp Acupuncture which is used at our clinic, can not only increase circulation into the micro-capillaries on the face, but also reduce pain and stimulate nerve growth.. Daoyin is a form of stimulation/ physical therapy that is often paired with acupuncture treatment. While acupuncture opens up the blockage, daoyin guides the energy and blood flow to the affected area and restores its structural position and function. It improves acupuncture results significantly.. Herbal remedies can be admissioned to help both the face and ...

All three active treatments reduced menstrual cycle pain rapidly (within an hour) with minimal side effects, but acupuncture point injection with vitamin K3 in SP6 was found to be optimal, producing a greater clinical and statistically significant reduction in pain. One to two units on the NRS for pain has been described as clinically significant by studies designed to evaluate unit scores with clinical improvement.24 ,25 Acupuncture point injection with vitamin K3 provided rapid relief of severe as well as moderate pain due to dysmenorrhoea. Effective treatment can be administered in a high-volume hospital clinic and may be especially useful to women whose pain is unmitigated by other methods. No differences between groups were found on long-term effects, but at the end of the study, participants in all active treatment groups endured significantly less pain over a reduced duration and reported fewer activity restrictions, fewer hours in bed and the consumption of fewer drugs for menstrual pain ...
BACKGROUND: Electrical stimulation of acupuncture point P6 reduces the incidence of postoperative nausea or vomiting (PONV) in adult patients. However, acupressure, laser stimulation of P6, and acupuncture during anesthesia have not been effective for reducing PONV in the pediatric population. The authors studied the effect of electrical P6 acupuncture in awake pediatric patients who had undergone surgery associated with a high incidence of PONV. METHODS: Patients aged 4-18 yr undergoing tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy were randomly assigned to acupuncture, sham acupuncture, or control groups. Acupuncture needles at P6 and a neutral point were placed while patients were anesthetized, and low-frequency electrical stimulation was applied to these points for 20 min in the recovery room while the patients were awake (P6 Acu group). This treatment was compared with sham needles along the arm at acupuncture points not associated with antiemesis (sham group) and a no-needle control group. ...
To determine whether stimulating acupuncture points on the skin via electrical stimulation (rather than needles) could control symptoms in people with diabetic gastroparesis, researchers enrolled 12 people - four men and eight women, with an average age of 51 - in an eight-week study. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either four weeks of electrical stimulation of gastrointestinal-specific acupuncture points via watch-sized stimulators or four weeks of a sham (inactive) treatment. At the end of this period, the participants were switched to the alternate treatment for the remaining four weeks of the study. Active treatments involved placing stimulators at acupuncture points p6 (just above the wrist crease) and ST36 (on the front of the leg, just below the knee). As stated by study author Richard W. McCallum, MD, Those points, according to Chinese medicine, tap into control centers for nausea, heartburn, and regurgitation. They also are near nerves. Inactive treatments, for the ...

Acupuncture is an effective low impact therapy that accesses self healing aspects of the bodies neurohormonal system.. Due to increased research in recent years acupuncture has an evidence base greater than many conventional medical treatments.. The efficacy of acupuncture does not depend on the style used. In other words contemporary acupuncture taught in a short course based almost solely on modern anatomy and physiology works as well as traditional approaches taking 3 or 4 years.* This is a game changing point - acupuncture can be taught in a few weeks to qualified medical professionals. Most contemporary acupuncture schools subject students to unnecessary ideology and traditional detail resulting in the dual burdens of high debt and low income. Essentially students are being inducted into the belief systems of their teachers at great cost to them. As I have shown previously this has financially ruinous consequences and is an ethical travesty.. Most traditional acupuncture training is of low ...
Endometriosis is a gynaecological disease that causes chronic pelvic pain, most notably painful menstruation, as the most common complaint. Acupuncture is frequently used to treat both pain and various gynaecological conditions. This review examined the effectiveness of acupuncture for reducing pain in endometriosis; however only one study met our inclusion criteria. The data from the included study, involving 67 women, indicated that ear acupuncture is more effective compared to Chinese herbal medicine for reducing menstrual pain. The study did not report whether participants suffered any side effects from their treatments. Larger, well‐designed studies comparing acupuncture with conventional therapies are necessary to confirm these results.
