To investigate the question of whether electroacupuncture (EA) promotes functional recovery via enhancement of proliferation and differentiation of neuronal stem cells (NSCs) in ischemic stroke, EA stimulation with 2 Hz was applied at bilateral acupoints to Baihui (GV20) and Dazhui (GV14) in middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) mice. EA stimulation improved neuromotor function and cognitive ability after ischemic stroke. EA stimulation resulted in an increase in the number of proliferated cells, especially in the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the ipsilateral hemisphere. Although a very limited number of NSCs survived and differentiated into neurons or astrocytes, EA treatment resulted in a significant increase in the number of proliferative cells and differentiated cells in the hippocampus and SVZ of the ipsilateral hemisphere compared to MCAO mice. EA stimulation resulted in significantly increased mRNA expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and vascular endothelial growth factor
Researchers also investigated the mechanism leading to blood glucose uptake in rats and found that electro-acupuncture causing muscle contractions, activates the autonomic nervous system in rats and that the blood glucose-regulating effect was reversed by administering drugs that block the autonomic receptors.. This study has the potential to gain better quality of life for patients with prediabetes and reduced capacity to regulate blood sugar levels, especially for those who have difficulties performing voluntary exercise, said study author, Elisabet Stener-Victorin.. Acupuncture is tried and true, for at least certain symptoms, added Thoru Pederson, Editor-in-Chief of the FASEB Journal. Here we have a new possibility centred on a disease of massive morbidity.. ...
RESULTS: We measured a significant improvement in retrobulbar CRA mean flow velocity for both the TES (p = 0.038) and electro-acupuncture groups (p = 0.001) on average after 2 weeks of treatment when compared to sham controls. Transcorneal electrical simulation (TES) and electro-acupuncture subjects had significant 55% and 34% greater increases, respectively, in RBF in the macular vessels when compared to sham controls (p < 0.001; p = 0.008) within a week of completing six TES sessions or a month after electro-acupuncture. There was a significant difference in the proportion of eyes that had improved visual function when comparing the three intervention groups (p = 0.038): four of seven TES subjects (57%), two of seven electro-acupuncture subjects (29%) and none of the seven control subjects (0%) had a significant visual improvement outside of typical test-retest variability at two consecutive post-treatment visits ...
All the subjects in the study will be randomized and their participation is completely voluntary. Patients recruited to join the study will not receive any monetary compensation for participation.. This research will include 100 female subjects, ages 21-45, undergoing medicated frozen embryo transfer (mFET). The subjects will be randomized into treatment and the non-treatment groups. The non-treatment group will undergo the medicated uterine preparation for FET according to the fertility clinics protocol.. Subjects in the treatment group will receive four electro-acupuncture (EA) treatments in addition to the mFET protocol, starting after the 1st Ultrasound measurement which constitutes as a baseline, until the start of the progesterone administration. Endometrial thickness will be measured using ultrasound and estrogen (E2) levels will be measured by blood samples as a standard measure to assess the time of P4 (progesterone) supplementation. This step will be done by the participants ...

The authors report interesting findings that electro-acupuncture (EA) in humans and rats mobilizes mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into the circulation, an effect that was closely related to sympathetic activation because it was mimicked by disinhibition of the hypothalamus and administration of epinephrine or dopamine in rats. Importantly, the mobilization of MSCs by EA correlated with pain attenuation in rats with tendon injury. This finding points to a novel direction in the search for mechanisms of EA analgesia. While EA also induced anti-inflammatory cytokines and activated medium- to large-diameter primary sensory neurons, which is expected, the finding of EA-induced MSC release will lead to further studies addressing EA-nervous system interactions and immune regulation of pain.. The source of EA-mobilized MSCs requires further study, although they were shown to be adipogenic. They do not appear to be from bone marrow or adipose tissue since distinct phenotypes were observed between bone ...

In the late 1940s, Dr. Reinhard Voll, a German medical doctor and engineer began researching and proving an innovative testing method now known as EAV (Electroacupuncture according to Voll). This method was documented and proven, in over a decade of hospital studies, in Germany and today is widely used throughout Europe by over 25,000 medical practitioners. In the United States, it is currently growing in acceptance particularly by medical practitioners who specialize in Alternative, Holistic and Biological Medicine techniques and disciplines.. EVA offers a quick, non-invasive screening method for determining health imbalances.. It is an Energetic assessment of the individual. And while all the organs, glands and complex systems in the body are physical and chemical in nature, there is also an unseen component to them and this is called the Energetic System.. This Energetic System is not physical nor chemical, it is pure energy.. EAV The Basics. In the late 1940s, a German medical doctor ...
The blood flow to the ovaries has also been shown to be enhanced by acupuncture by the same researchers. This study was done on anaesthetized rats but we can assume a similar mechanism will operate in humans.
A close relationship between painful and non-painful (somatosensory) percepction was noticed already in the past centuries and led into development of many analgesic methods. Only basic neuroanatomical and neurophysiological research using animal models of nociception was able to shed more light on their proper mechanisms until the era of modern non- invasive imaging methods. The main aim of this thesis was to analyze non-invasively, in human volunteers and patients with chronic pain, spatiotemporal relations between brain evoked responses to painful (or aversive) and non-painful stimuli. In next step, to discuss the roles of different engaged mechanisms in found interactions and suggest recommendations for further research of pain. 4 experimental studies (3 in healthy volunteers and 1 in patients with failed back surgery syndrome) are presented. Using high-resolution EEG, phasic electrical stimulation of median, tibial or sural nerve(s), and source analysis of recorded data, modulations of all ...

Acupuncture as a therapeutic intervention has been widely used for treatment of many pathophysiological disorders. For achieving improved therapeutic effects, relatively thick acupuncture needles have been frequently used in clinical practice with, in turn, enhanced stimulation intensity. However due to the discomforting nature of the larger-diameter acupuncture needles there is considerable interest in developing advanced acupuncture therapeutical techniques that provide more comfort with improved efficacy. So motivated, we have developed a new class of acupuncture needles, porous acupuncture needles (PANs) with hierarchical micro/nano-scale conical pores upon the surface, fabricated via a simple and well known electrochemical process, with surface area approximately 20 times greater than conventional acupuncture needles. The performance of these high-surface-area PANs is evaluated by monitoring the electrophysiological and behavioral responses from the in vivo stimulation of Shenmen (HT7) ...
Abstract: Neurobiological mechanisms invoking the release of endogenous opioids and depression of stress hormone release are believed to be the basis of acupuncture analgesia. This study compared plasma beta-endorphin and cortisol levels with self assessment scores of intensity of pain, before and after 10 days of electro-acupuncture treatment in patients suffering from chronic pain as a result of osteoarthritis knees. Forty patients of either sex over 40 years with primary osteoarthritis knee were recruited into a single-blinded, sham-controlled study. For electro-acupuncture group the points were selected according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine Meridian Theory. In the sham group needles were inserted at random points away from true acupoints and no current was passed. Both groups were treated for 10 days with one session every day lasting for 20-25min. Pre- and post-treatment Western Ontario and McMaster Universities (WOMAC) index of osteoarthritis knee and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) ...

Microlight Electro-Acupuncture therapy can relieve your pain quickly and with long-lasting results - without the use of drugs, needles or uncomfortable stimulation.. Microlight Electro-Acupuncture (MEA) therapy is the high-tech acupuncture system that has created positive results for thousands of people in serious pain who have not found help elsewhere. MEA uses a unique combination of gentle microcurrents and colors of therapeutic light to relieve your pain rapidly and effectively. In many cases relief comes almost immediately.. Modern bio-chemical research and traditional Chinese medicine agree that energetic blockages are at the root of pain and inflammation. Developed according to the principles of Chinese medicine by Darren Starwynn, O.M.D., MEA therapy works by balancing and unblocking the internal energy pathways of the body. Our acupuncturist will select special points on the body on which to apply MEA depending on the patients condition.. ...
We reported two diverse cases of CPP - one had classic neuropathic pain (NP) and was resistant to medical treatment and one had myofascial syndrome of the abdominal wall muscles; both were treated with electro-acupuncture. The intervention was judged successful with long standing effects.. Chronic pelvic pain is a quite common, multifactorial clinical entity. Aside from gynecologic origin in women, it is important for the clinician to seek for other possible causes including NP and neuromuscular pelvic system disorders.. Acupuncture was proposed by World Health Organization (WHO) in 1982 as a potential treatment for NP.6 In our case, we chose a standardized protocol that is considered appropriate for CPP and potentially is equally effective to personalized approaches.7,8. She was transferred to our hospital and underwent surgical debridement, after which she was treated with EA. Two disposable, sterile needles (0.30×13 mm) were inserted 1 cm away from the wound margins, one on either side. The EA apparatus (Bio Medical Life Systems, USA) was connected to the needles, and a current of frequency 0.5 Hz and intensity 500 μA was passed for 30 min, 5 days a week for 4 weeks. The ulcer was covered with gauze after each session.. No significant changes apart from a little exudation were found 1 week after the EA intervention. The WSA decreased a little, from 7.77 cm2 to 7.06 cm2, while the depth reduced significantly, from 2.5 cm to 1.0 cm. Four weeks later after a total of 20 EA treatments the WSA and depth had decreased to 1.45 cm2 and 0.2 cm, respectively. The patient was transferred to the respiratory ward after the 20 EA treatments because of serious pneumonia before the ulcer had healed completely, so the final outcome is not known.. The use of EA for pressure ...
PCOS is an endocrine disorder where abnormally high levels of androgen hormones (mainly seen in normal healthy males) lead to physical characteristics similar to males, namely abnormal distribution of body hair on the face, chest and arms, or development of acne. Blood tests show high levels of androgen hormones, mainly testosterone or its precursor, as well as different by-products through breakdown of testosterone in such patients. Though medicines like oral-combined contraceptive pills are routinely used for the management of PCOS, lifestyle modifications in the form of diet control and physical exercise are also recommended for obese patients, as obesity is an independent risk factor for PCOS. Alternative therapies including acupuncture improve the ovulatory function of the diseased ovaries and increase the chances of conception. The authors, therefore, investigated whether acupuncture delivered by a low-frequency electric current would decrease the androgen levels, thereby improving the ...
Equine acupuncture-. Acupuncture is a great adjunct to chiropractic adjustments but can also be used as a sole therapy! We will begin much the same, by diving into a consultation regarding current complaints or concerns as well as discuss your goals for both you and your horse. A thorough examination will be performed to assess your horses resting stance, muscle tone and may include a baseline lameness evaluation if necessary. A hands-on assessment of your horses skin and muscle aids in the location of trigger points which indicate areas of misfiring nerves. Following the evaluation, targeted application of acupuncture needles will be performed. At the end of your appointment you will receive a written description of your horses examination, the adjustments performed, a list of rehabilitation instructions and exercises, and recommendations for follow up care.. *Electro-acupuncture involving the application of an electrical stimulation machine will also be provided on an as needed basis for an ...

In the largest experiment on acupuncture for back pain to date, more than 1,100 patients were randomly assigned to receive either acupuncture, sham acupuncture or conventional therapy. For the sham acupuncture, needles were inserted, but not as deeply as for the real thing. The sham acupuncture also did not insert needles in traditional acupuncture points on the body and the needles were not manually moved and rotated.. After six months, patients answered questions about pain and functional ability and their scores determined how well each of the therapies worked. In the real acupuncture group, 47 percent of patients improved. In the sham acupuncture group, 44 percent did. In the usual care group, 27 percent got relief. ...
It is important to understand more about acupuncture treatments. There are many options available to threat treat chronic pain. When you choose to go for acupuncture treatment, it is highly necessary that you should be capable of distinguishing between real acupuncture and fake acupuncture.. There are research works available that provides enough details about the methodical acupuncture treatments.. There are also research works that proves that it has been effective on people who had back pain and other chronic conditions.. The responsibility is on the individual to choose the right acupuncture treatment. It is easier to identify if the treatment is real or fake or just a sham acupuncture with no effect.. After seeing good results from it acupuncture was used as one of the conventional therapies to overcome pain and other problems in the body.. If you check in the city there are also some fake acupuncture clinics available that can mislead people with fake treatments.. It is the responsibility ...

Objective : Acupuncture (from the Latin acus, needle, and pungere, to prick) is a technique of inserting and manipulating fine needles at specific points on the body. As a placebo acupuncture needle device was developed based on the visual impact of needling, it has been raised that it is useful only when acupuncture points and needling are visible to subjects. To examine the visual factor of the placebo acupuncture, the present study was aimed to compare the blinding index of the verum and placebo acupuncture between masked and unmasked situation. Methods : Thirty-six patients were randomly alloted to be stimulated with a verum or placebo acupuncture in a cross-over design. They were asked to guess a right answer whether they were stimulated with the verum or placebo acupuncture at LI4 in an unmasked or masked situation. The penetrating, pain, and deqi sensations were also measured after the stimulation using modified visual analogue scale. Results : The correct answer rate of the placebo ...
Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are one of the potential tools for treatment of the spinal cord injury; however, the survival and differentiation of MSCs in an injured spinal cord still need to be improved. In the present study, we investigated whether Governor Vessel electro-acupuncture (EA) could efficiently promote bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) survival and differentiation, axonal regeneration and finally, functional recovery in the transected spinal cord. The spinal cords of adult Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were completely transected at T10, five experimental groups were performed: 1. sham operated control (Sham-control); 2. operated control (Op-control); 3. electro-acupuncture treatment (EA); 4. MSCs transplantation (MSCs); and 5. MSCs transplantation combined with electro-acupuncture (MSCs+EA). After 2-8 weeks of MSCs transplantation plus EA treatment, we found that the neurotrophin-3 (NT-3), cAMP level, the differentiation of MSCs, the 5-HT positive and CGRP positive nerve
in reply: As I attempted to briefly summarize in the article, research on acupuncture is difficult. An excellent resource on acupuncture research is the book Acupuncture Research: Strategies for Establishing an Evidence Base.1 Most research protocols standardize acupuncture therapy in a way that does not mirror the usual practice of acupuncture, which is individualized based on many factors (e.g., Chinese rather than Western medicine diagnosis; acupuncturists training and experience). For many pain problems, it is not unusual for nontraditional modern acupuncture techniques such as percutaneous nerve stimulation and intramuscular stimulation (sometimes referred to as dry needling) to be combined with, or used instead of, traditional Qi-moving acupuncture treatment. Sham acupuncture usually involves skin puncture with acupuncture needles at locations different from standard acupuncture. Because the mechanisms of acupuncture are not well understood, sham treatments that include skin puncture ...

Cholesterol results were important. Total cholesterol reduced in the laser acupuncture group, harmful LDL decreased and helpful HDL cholesterol increased. This demonstrates a homeostatic therapeutic action of laser acupuncture on cholesterol levels. In related research, investigators conducted a double-blind, randomized, and controlled ...
Acupuncture needles have been reported in bladder,2 ,11 nuchal and occipital area,4 shoulder girdle,12 spinal cord,3 ,13 right atrium,25 right ventricle,14 ,15 L5 nerve root,16 medulla oblongata,17 ,18 skin,19 carpal tunnel,20 calf21 and paraspinal muscle.22. Because the needle in our patient was not migrating, the only symptom he developed was fear about his general condition. However, patients may develop a whole range of symptoms depending on the location of the needle. In a case described by von Riedenauer et al acupuncture needles retained in a 25-year-old patient caused pneumothorax followed by dyspnoea.12 The acupuncture procedure had been carried out 5 years before this presentation, for treatment of right shoulder pain. A case of argyria (deposition of silver in the skin) caused by embedded acupuncture needles was also reported.19 Abumi et al described a 60-year-old patient who had a needle that penetrated to the medulla oblongata, which was discovered 18 years after the acupuncture ...
The objective was to evaluate whether acupuncture at term can influence cervical ripening and thus reduce the need for postdates induction. On their due dates 45 women were randomized into either an acupuncture group (25) or control group (20).. The women were then examined at two daily intervals for cervical length (measured with vaginal trasonography, cervical mucus and cervical stasis according to Bishops score). The acupuncture group also received acupuncture every two days at the acupuncture points Hegu LI 4 and Sanyinjiao Sp 6.. If women had not delivered after 10 days labour was induced by administering vaginal prostaglandin tablets. The time period from the womans due date to delivery was on average 5 days in the acupuncture group compared to 7.9 days in the control group. Labour was induced in 20 % of women in the acupuncture group compared to 35% in the control group. There were no differences between overall duration of labour and the first and second stage of labour. ...
OBJECTIVE: Although manual and electrical stimulation are frequently used in acupuncture analgesia, studies comparing both stimulation modalities are contradictory. This blinded, placebo-controlled cross-over study investigates effects of brief manual and electrical acupuncture stimulation on pressure pain detection thresholds (PPDT) compared with nonpenetrating sham acupuncture (NPSA). INTERVENTIONS: Forty-five healthy volunteers received electrically and manually stimulated acupuncture and NPSA at large intestine 4 and 11 in randomized order. PPDT was assessed using pressure algometry at the second toe before; during; and 0, 2, and 5 minutes after each intervention. Stimulus intensity during stimulation was rated on a 0-10 numeric rating scale (NRS). RESULTS: PPDT rose from 316 kPa (standard deviation [SD] 149) to 398 kPa (SD 157) and 405 kPa (SD 184) immediately after acupuncture with manual and electrical stimulation, respectively, and to 380 kPa (SD 175) and 367 kPa (SD 168) after NPSA with ...

Traditional Acupuncture works on the understanding that there is an energy flow, the Qi, or Chi, in the body. It is believed by Acupuncture professionals that if there is a blockage in this energy flow, it can create problems. These problems could range from sinus infections to common flu. The idea behind Acupuncture is to attempt to clear these blockages, allowing for balance in the body.. Myofascial Trigger Point Dry Needling, on the other hand, deals exclusively with the neuromuscular aspect of a muscle. Myofascial Trigger Point Dry Needling relieves pain by inserting filament needles directly into trigger points within the muscle. Sometimes it is enough to insert the needle to within half an inch of the Trigger Point to release it. This causes a local twitch response, which signals that the Trigger Point has been released. Myofascial Trigger Point Dry Needling is a scientifically proven method used to relieve muscle pain, nerve pain and referral pain.. Myofascial Trigger Point Dry Needling ...
Adverse effects such as fatigue, pain, erythema, nausea and vomiting are commonly known in patients undergoing irradiation (RT) alone or in combination with chemotherapy (RCHT). Patients suffering from these symptoms are limited in their daily life and their quality of life (QOL) is often reduced. As addressed in several trials, acupuncture can cause amelioration of these specific disorders. Especially for pain symptoms, several groups have shown efficacy of acupuncture. To what extent the difference between traditional acupuncture (verum acupuncture) and false acupuncture (sham acupuncture) is in reducing side effects and improvement of QOL is not clear. ROSETTA is a prospective randomized phase II trial (version 1.0) to examine the efficacy of traditional acupuncture in patients with RT-related side effects. In the experimental (verum) arm (n = 37) an experienced acupuncture-trained person will treat dedicated acupuncture points. In the control (sham) arm (n = 37) sham acupuncture will be performed to
This is me undergoing my daily acu-laser treatment. (I had no idea I look so sci-fi.) I asked Dr. Rosenfarb if he could provide an overview of how his laser acupuncture treatment works. Heres what he had to say.. Laser Acupuncture works by using photo-biomodulation (laser-light impulses) at specific acupuncture points around the body. It is believed that the bodys organ meridians in the Chinese Meridians exist at a light frequency. We use Acu-laser or light needle as a non-invasive way to stimulate certain acupuncture points that may benefit vision and improve function.. My general theory is that acupuncture works more on the Qi (energy) and Blood (circulation) level. Acupuncture opens the blockages and increases the flow of Qi and Blood to the eyes (branch symptom) and is also used to correct/support the underlying cause (root issue). Acupuncture does not add anything or take away from the body, it just helps regulate function. If the eyes receive oxygen, nutrients, fluids, glucose for ...
Acupuncture needles are thin but powerful. Many people believe in the healing powers of acupuncture needles, and more people turn to the powers of acupuncture needles every year.
Electro-acupuncture is combined with Acupuncture and Acupressure. Needles or pressure is put on specific points along the body. The Acupuncture needles or tens pads are targeted to specific Acupuncture points, they are then attached to an electrical device, which generates continuous electrical impulses using tens pads or small clips attached to the acupuncture needles.. The impulse goes from one needle to the other, it usually occurs over a period of no longer than 30 minutes. It is very effective when used to Repair Sports Injuries and Strains in combination with Acupuncture, Cupping and Moxa-Moxibustion.. It is used to achieve the following benefits;. ...

A study from Karolinska Institutet and Linkoping University in Sweden has shown that simulated acupuncture - sometimes referred to as placebo - is just as beneficial as real acupuncture for treating nausea in cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy.. Patients, who received only standard care including medications for nausea, felt significant more nausea than patients in both the acupuncture groups.. The beneficial effects seem not to come from the traditional acupuncture method, but probably from the patients positive expectations and the extra care that the treatment entails, said Anna Enblom, physiotherapist and researcher at the Osher Centre for Integrative Medicine at Karolinska Institutet.. The patients communicated with the physiotherapists administering the acupuncture, received tactile stimulation and were given extra time for rest and relaxation.. The study included 277 patients at Linkoping and Lund university hospitals and Karolinska University Hospital in Solna, all of whom were ...
Myofascial trigger points, also known as trigger points, are described as hyperirritable spots in the fascia surrounding skeletal muscle. They are associated with palpable nodules in taut bands of muscle fibers. They are a topic of ongoing controversy, as there is limited data to inform a scientific understanding of the phenomenon. Accordingly, a formal acceptance of myofascial knots as an identifiable source of pain is more common among bodyworkers, physical therapists, chiropractors, and osteopathic practitioners. Nonetheless, the concept of trigger points provides a framework which may be used to help address certain musculoskeletal pain. The trigger point model states that unexplained pain frequently radiates from these points of local tenderness to broader areas, sometimes distant from the trigger point itself. Practitioners claim to have identified reliable referred pain patterns which associate pain in one location with trigger points elsewhere. There is variation in the methodology for ...
In contrast, the Western explanation of acupuncture incorporates modern concepts of neuroscience and researchers at the National Institute of Health are studying at least three possible explanations for how acupuncture works:. Opioid release. During acupuncture, endorphins that are part of your bodys natural pain-control system may be released into your central nervous system - your brain and spinal cord. This reduces pain much like taking a pain medication.. Spinal cord stimulation. Acupuncture may stimulate the nerves in your spinal cord to release pain-suppressing neurotransmitters. This has sometimes been called the gate theory.. Blood flow changes. Acupuncture needles may increase the amount of blood flow in the area around the needle. The increased blood flow may supply additional nutrients or remove toxic substances, or both, promoting healing.. If you would like to discuss whether acupuncture is a suitable treatment for your symptoms please feel free to get in touch ...
The crucial symptom of atopic eczema is itch. Acupuncture has been shown to exhibit a significant effect on experimental itch; however, studies focusing on clinical itch in atopic eczema and corresponding mechanisms are lacking. The study design was a unicenter, single-blinded (observer), prospective, randomized clinical pilot trial with an additional experimental part. In 10 patients with atopic eczema, we investigated the effect of acupuncture treatment (n = 5) compared to no treatment (n = 5) on itch intensity and in vitro basophil CD63 expression upon allergen stimulation (house dust mite and timothy grass pollen) in a pilot trial. Results: Mean itch intensity in a visual analog scale was rated significantly lower in the acupuncture group (-25% ± 26% [day 15-day 0]; -24% ± 31% [day 33-day 0]) than in the control group (15% ± 6% [day 15-day 0]; 29% ± 9% [day 33-day 0]). From day 0 (before treatment) to day 15 (after 5 acupuncture treatments) as well as day 33 (after 10 acupuncture ...

The paradigm of modern medicines, which is mainly about chemotherapy, shows limits caused by side effect, temporary therapeutic efficacy and drug resistance. Over the three thousands of chemicals have been used as chemotherapeutic treatment and some of them have contaminated environment and destroyed the ecology, as residual drug which is called Xenobiotics. So acupuncture an oriental medicine, which has been used as a complementary and alternative medical treatment is attracting attention. Acupuncture needle begins to be employed from 6000 BC, which is believed to be, by insertion of sharpened stone, bamboo, and bone. It is a medical device which converts physical energy to vital energy by needle insertion in the skin. However, most of plausible mechanisms cannot explain its actual action clearly yet. Although acupuncture is unexplainable therapeutic system, it has been adopted in various types of illnesses as a kind of effective therapy. One of the reasons, acupuncture needle is attracting ...
Background The mechanisms of action underlying acupuncture, including acupuncture point specificity, are not well understood. In the previous decade, an increasing number of studies have applied fMRI to investigate brain response to acupuncture stimulation. Our aim was to provide a systematic overview of acupuncture fMRI research considering the following aspects: 1) differences between verum and sham acupuncture, 2) differences due to various methods of acupuncture manipulation, 3) differences between patients and healthy volunteers, 4) differences between different acupuncture points. Methodology/Principal Findings We systematically searched English, Chinese, Korean and Japanese databases for literature published from the earliest available up until September 2009, without any language restrictions. We included all studies using fMRI to investigate the effect of acupuncture on the human brain (at least one group that received needle-based acupuncture). 779 papers were identified, 149 met the
Electro-acupuncture, the application of a pulsating electrical current to acupuncture needles as a means of stimulating the acupoints, was developed in China as an extension of hand manipulation of acupuncture needles around 1934. The procedure for electro-acupuncture is to insert the acupuncture needle as would normally be done, attain the qi reaction by hand manipulation, and then attach an electrode to the needle to provide continued stimulation.
And, as you might expect, acupuncturists and other supporters of superstitious and pseudoscientific treatments are proclaiming that they have been vindicated.. The study looked at 29 randomized clinical trials of acupuncture for various sorts of pain, including back, neck and headache. It looked at studies that used sham and no-acupuncture controls. Sham acupuncture is where the patient thinks they are getting acupuncture, but typically the needle is not being inserted, merely pressed against the skin. Vickers et al. reported that when acupuncture was compared with no- acupuncture, reported reduction in pain was fairly large, about 30%. However, crucially for supporters of acupuncture, they reported a moddest improvement of pain when real acupuncture was compared with sham acupuncture.. And as such, the media reports of this finding (with a few honourable exceptions) have followed the abstracts conclusion that acupuncture is a valid treatment option for chronic pain. David Gorski at ...

Cancer is a complex systemic disease. As a key component of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is a clinically proven medical treatment for many diseases, and it also has preventative effects as it balances the body, allowing it to self-regulate. For cancer patients, acupuncture is widely used as complementary therapy to boost the immune system and reduce the side effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. However, few studies have determined how acupuncture against cancer, especially in regulating the intestinal flora of the tumor-burdened mice. We treated osteosarcoma tumor-burdened mice by using needling on different acupoints and acupoints combination, thereafter determined the effects of acupuncture on tumor growth by using imaging technology in vitro. In addition, intestinal bacteria were analyzed for further understanding the holistic and systemic treatment effects of acupuncture in osteosarcoma tumor-burdened mice. Acupuncture treatment can delay tumor growth and changes of intestinal
Acupuncture is widely applied all over the world. Although the neurobiological underpinnings of acupuncture still remain unclear, accumulating evidence indicates significant alteration of brain activities in response to acupuncture. In particular, activities of brain regions in the default mode network (DMN) are modulated by acupuncture. DMN is crucial for maintaining physiological homeostasis and its functional architecture becomes disrupted in various disorders. But how acupuncture modulates brain functions and whether such modulation constitutes core mechanisms of acupuncture treatment are far from clear. This Perspective integrates recent literature on interactions between acupuncture and functional networks including the DMN, and proposes a back-translational research strategy to elucidate brain mechanisms of acupuncture treatment.
Acupuncture is widely used to enhance stroke recovery in Eastern countries. However, a recent randomized controlled trial demonstrated that acupuncture has no specific efficacy in stroke rehabilitation [17]. A meta-analysis of sham-controlled randomized clinical trials concluded that there is insufficient evidence to support the use of acupuncture for functional recovery after stroke [18]. These data have led to ongoing controversy regarding the use of acupuncture therapy after stroke, despite the thousands years of evidence from traditional Chinese medicine practice.. The occupational therapists technique in the manipulation and selection of acupoints is the most important factor that determines the efficacy of acupuncture therapy [19]. In the present study, all occupational therapists are experts with more than ten years of acupuncture practice and plenty of experience with stroke treatments. The acupoints selected in this trial correspond to a complex prescription for stroke therapy ...

Acupuncture is a means of encouraging the body to activate its own healing abilities to restore normal function to problem areas. This is done in modern times by inserting very fine needles to specific points on the body called acupuncture points. The oldest known acupuncture texts are from China and date from 3,000 years ago. However, acupuncture has expanded into other regions and many different approaches exist today, including Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese styles. In recent years, Western medicine has become interested in acupuncture. Acupuncture used alongside orthodox western medicine is sometimes called Medical Acupuncture. Western acupuncturists may use traditional Chinese acupuncture points, trigger points or a combination of points.
Dry needle therapy is a type of acupuncture that involves the use of acupuncture at local, often tender, trigger points. Dry needle therapy is most commonly used to reduce or eliminate pain in the muscles and joints. Like other styles of acupuncture the treatment helps improve the health of the body in a way that is natural. For those in the Orlando area interested in dry needling, we have more information about the technique below.. Dry needle treatment is a style of acupuncture that effectively addresses muscle pain and tightness. It works by finding areas that may be painful and tender to the touch, and selecting acupuncture points in these locations. It is important to seek out a practitioner specifically trained in acupuncture if you are considering dry needling to reduce potential side effects from this type of therapy.. Trigger points, which are areas where the muscle may be hard or knotted, are identified in dry needle therapy so that the fine, stainless steel acupuncture needles can be ...
In order, to gain further information about the effectiveness of acupuncture on COPD patients, Masao Suzuki, the head of the team who led the study from Kyoto University as well as Meiji University of integrated Medicine in Japan, selected 68 patients affected with the COPD syndrome from across Japan. They then, divided them into two groups. One group were assigned to receive acupuncture for 12 weeks while the other group received placebo acupuncture, or an acupuncture procedure that uses blunt needles which do not actually enter your skin. However, all of them were asked to remain on the medicine they were prescribed previous of this experiment.. Now, the patients who had received the acupuncture saw a significance improve in their condition, being less breathless, and having less coughing syndrome and being able to walk a lot longer than those treated with placebo acupuncture.. The research further found evidence that strength and mobility of the patients chest muscles were greatly improved, ...

Patients receiving acupuncture often describe feeling relaxed and less stressed after treatments. Now there are studies showing, that in fact, they are less stressed.. A Chinese study treated patients one time per week with acupuncture with the goal of lowering blood pressure readings. Researchers found that both the diastolic, as well as the systolic readings lowered after just 4 treatments. They found that utilizing acupuncture increased nitric oxide levels in the body, thus lowering blood pressure. The study showed that patients levels remained low for some time even after the acupuncture treatments had ended. In addition, a California study has shown that the insertion of acupuncture needles in the body stimulates areas of the brain that manage sympathetic nerve responses. This is the fight or flight response that is triggered by various life stressors. Whether blood pressure readings are high due to genetics, or whether they are due to stress, seeking out an acupuncture treatment could ...
