Under the Health Disciplines Act, the registration application form stated that Acupuncture Distance Learning or On-Line Courses/Programs ARE NOT APPROVED by the College and Association of Acupuncturists of Alberta or the Health Disciplines Board. With acupuncturists now under the Health Professions Act, the College of Acupuncturists of Alberta (the CAA) has more authority over the approval of acupuncture education programs.. Online course delivery was recognized as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic, and research has shown equal effectiveness of online learning compared to traditional learning. Due to these considerations, the Council of the CAA is prepared to allow online learning and approves the following Interim Policy for Online Class Delivery.. in reply: As I attempted to briefly summarize in the article, research on acupuncture is difficult. An excellent resource on acupuncture research is the book Acupuncture Research: Strategies for Establishing an Evidence Base.1 Most research protocols standardize acupuncture therapy in a way that does not mirror the usual practice of acupuncture, which is individualized based on many factors (e.g., Chinese rather than Western medicine diagnosis; acupuncturists training and experience). For many pain problems, it is not unusual for nontraditional modern acupuncture techniques such as percutaneous nerve stimulation and intramuscular stimulation (sometimes referred to as dry needling) to be combined with, or used instead of, traditional Qi-moving acupuncture treatment. Sham acupuncture usually involves skin puncture with acupuncture needles at locations different from standard acupuncture. Because the mechanisms of acupuncture are not well understood, sham treatments that include skin puncture ...
Acupuncture stimulation at specific points, or trigger points (TPs), elicits sensations called de-qi. De-qi sensations relate to the clinical efficacy of the treatment. However, it is neither clear whether de-qi sensations are associated with TPs, nor clear whether acupuncture effects on brain activity are associated with TPs or de-qi. We recorded cerebral hemodynamic responses during acupuncture stimulation at TPs and non-TPs by functional near-infrared spectroscopy. The acupuncture needle was inserted into both TPs and non-TPs within the right extensor muscle in the forearm. Typical acupuncture needle manipulation was conducted eight times for 15 s. The subjects pressed a button if they felt a de-qi sensation. We investigated how hemodynamic responses related to de-qi sensations induced at TPs and non-TPs. We observed that acupuncture stimulations producing de-qi sensations significantly decreased the Oxy-Hb concentration in the supplementary motor area (SMA), pre-supplementary motor area, ...

Adverse effects such as fatigue, pain, erythema, nausea and vomiting are commonly known in patients undergoing irradiation (RT) alone or in combination with chemotherapy (RCHT). Patients suffering from these symptoms are limited in their daily life and their quality of life (QOL) is often reduced. As addressed in several trials, acupuncture can cause amelioration of these specific disorders. Especially for pain symptoms, several groups have shown efficacy of acupuncture. To what extent the difference between traditional acupuncture (verum acupuncture) and false acupuncture (sham acupuncture) is in reducing side effects and improvement of QOL is not clear. ROSETTA is a prospective randomized phase II trial (version 1.0) to examine the efficacy of traditional acupuncture in patients with RT-related side effects. In the experimental (verum) arm (n = 37) an experienced acupuncture-trained person will treat dedicated acupuncture points. In the control (sham) arm (n = 37) sham acupuncture will be performed to
In the largest experiment on acupuncture for back pain to date, more than 1,100 patients were randomly assigned to receive either acupuncture, sham acupuncture or conventional therapy. For the sham acupuncture, needles were inserted, but not as deeply as for the real thing. The sham acupuncture also did not insert needles in traditional acupuncture points on the body and the needles were not manually moved and rotated.. After six months, patients answered questions about pain and functional ability and their scores determined how well each of the therapies worked. In the real acupuncture group, 47 percent of patients improved. In the sham acupuncture group, 44 percent did. In the usual care group, 27 percent got relief. ...
Objective:To observe the effects of acupuncture therapy of regulating mentality and supplementing kidney (RMSK) on the expression of proopiomelanocortin(POMC) mRNA in hypothalamus of the female climacteric rats. Method: The technique of reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT PCR) was adopted. Result: The expression of POMC mRNA was down regulated in hypothalamus of the female climacteric rats. After treated with acupuncture, there was a significantly up regulating expression of POMC mRNA in the group of acupuncture therapy of RMSK, and no obvious change in the group of acupuncture therapy of supplementing kidney and invigorating spleen. Conclusion: The up regulated expression of POMC mRNA in hypothalamus may involve with the effective mechanism of acupuncture therapy of RMSK in the treatment of climacteric syndrome.

Acupuncture as a therapeutic intervention has been widely used for treatment of many pathophysiological disorders. For achieving improved therapeutic effects, relatively thick acupuncture needles have been frequently used in clinical practice with, in turn, enhanced stimulation intensity. However due to the discomforting nature of the larger-diameter acupuncture needles there is considerable interest in developing advanced acupuncture therapeutical techniques that provide more comfort with improved efficacy. So motivated, we have developed a new class of acupuncture needles, porous acupuncture needles (PANs) with hierarchical micro/nano-scale conical pores upon the surface, fabricated via a simple and well known electrochemical process, with surface area approximately 20 times greater than conventional acupuncture needles. The performance of these high-surface-area PANs is evaluated by monitoring the electrophysiological and behavioral responses from the in vivo stimulation of Shenmen (HT7) ...

N2 - Acupuncture is a useful tool to treat many diseases, including cardiovascular disorders, but its modulation of stress-related responses is still debated. Aim of this study was to estimate whether the traditional Chinese acupuncture affected the transient impairment of the brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) produced by acute mental stress. In addition, since a high susceptibility to hypnosis attenuates the endothelial dysfunction elicited by mental calculation, the possible interaction between acupuncture and hypnotizability was investigated. Five low-to-medium and five medium-to-high hypnotizable healthy subjects joined two experimental sessions, for real and sham acupuncture. FMD and heart rate were ...
Acupuncture is a means of encouraging the body to activate its own healing abilities to restore normal function to problem areas. This is done in modern times by inserting very fine needles to specific points on the body called acupuncture points. The oldest known acupuncture texts are from China and date from 3,000 years ago. However, acupuncture has expanded into other regions and many different approaches exist today, including Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese styles. In recent years, Western medicine has become interested in acupuncture. Acupuncture used alongside orthodox western medicine is sometimes called Medical Acupuncture. Western acupuncturists may use traditional Chinese acupuncture points, trigger points or a combination of points.
The aim of this research was to explore the hypothesis that acupuncture at the sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG), a new a new method of acupuncture, would be more efficacious and safe than traditional acupuncture in the treatment of persistent allergic rhinitis (PAR). For this study, 120 patients with PAR were randomly assigned to SPG acupuncture, traditional acupuncture ( [LI 20], [LI 4], and [Ex-HN 3]), or drug treatment (budesonide nasal spray). Efficacy was assessed by using single symptoms, including sneezing, rhinorrhea, nasal obstruction and nasal itch, a total nasal symptoms score (TNSS), and a Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (RQLQ) before treatment, the day treatment ended, and 4-, 8-, 12-weeks later, respectively. Four weeks after treatment ended, the effectiveness rate in the SPG-acupuncture group was superior to that of the traditional-acupuncture group ( = 0.033) but was still lower than that of the drug-treatment group ( = 0.039), with mean effectiveness rates of ...

Whilst the eligibility needs will differ for each expert organisation, usually possible members will require to supply proof of the acceptable acupuncture education as nicely as proof that they are a medical specialist such as a medical doctor, nurse of physiotherapist and so forth.. The truth is Medical Acupuncturists are pioneers and they are paying the political, social, and financial rates of forging new territory. Nevertheless, while we witness healing, none of us has ever seen an acupuncture point let alone a meridian. The term medical acupuncture is used to denote the practice of acupuncture performed by a licensed physician.. Secondly, even though classical acupuncture points could be the best sites to needle, they are obviously not the only areas where the nervous program can be stimulated. We provide medical acupuncture solutions at our Camp Hill, Carlisle, and Hershey places. This power or Qi is encouraged by placing very thin, sterile, single-use Acupuncture needles at particular ...
It is important to understand more about acupuncture treatments. There are many options available to threat treat chronic pain. When you choose to go for acupuncture treatment, it is highly necessary that you should be capable of distinguishing between real acupuncture and fake acupuncture.. There are research works available that provides enough details about the methodical acupuncture treatments.. There are also research works that proves that it has been effective on people who had back pain and other chronic conditions.. The responsibility is on the individual to choose the right acupuncture treatment. It is easier to identify if the treatment is real or fake or just a sham acupuncture with no effect.. After seeing good results from it acupuncture was used as one of the conventional therapies to overcome pain and other problems in the body.. If you check in the city there are also some fake acupuncture clinics available that can mislead people with fake treatments.. It is the responsibility ...
The objective was to evaluate whether acupuncture at term can influence cervical ripening and thus reduce the need for postdates induction. On their due dates 45 women were randomized into either an acupuncture group (25) or control group (20).. The women were then examined at two daily intervals for cervical length (measured with vaginal trasonography, cervical mucus and cervical stasis according to Bishops score). The acupuncture group also received acupuncture every two days at the acupuncture points Hegu LI 4 and Sanyinjiao Sp 6.. If women had not delivered after 10 days labour was induced by administering vaginal prostaglandin tablets. The time period from the womans due date to delivery was on average 5 days in the acupuncture group compared to 7.9 days in the control group. Labour was induced in 20 % of women in the acupuncture group compared to 35% in the control group. There were no differences between overall duration of labour and the first and second stage of labour. ...
Background The mechanisms of action underlying acupuncture, including acupuncture point specificity, are not well understood. In the previous decade, an increasing number of studies have applied fMRI to investigate brain response to acupuncture stimulation. Our aim was to provide a systematic overview of acupuncture fMRI research considering the following aspects: 1) differences between verum and sham acupuncture, 2) differences due to various methods of acupuncture manipulation, 3) differences between patients and healthy volunteers, 4) differences between different acupuncture points. Methodology/Principal Findings We systematically searched English, Chinese, Korean and Japanese databases for literature published from the earliest available up until September 2009, without any language restrictions. We included all studies using fMRI to investigate the effect of acupuncture on the human brain (at least one group that received needle-based acupuncture). 779 papers were identified, 149 met the
And, as you might expect, acupuncturists and other supporters of superstitious and pseudoscientific treatments are proclaiming that they have been vindicated.. The study looked at 29 randomized clinical trials of acupuncture for various sorts of pain, including back, neck and headache. It looked at studies that used sham and no-acupuncture controls. Sham acupuncture is where the patient thinks they are getting acupuncture, but typically the needle is not being inserted, merely pressed against the skin. Vickers et al. reported that when acupuncture was compared with no- acupuncture, reported reduction in pain was fairly large, about 30%. However, crucially for supporters of acupuncture, they reported a moddest improvement of pain when real acupuncture was compared with sham acupuncture.. And as such, the media reports of this finding (with a few honourable exceptions) have followed the abstracts conclusion that acupuncture is a valid treatment option for chronic pain. Acupuncture is a tried and tested system of traditional medicine, which has been used in China and other eastern cultures for thousands of years to restore, promote and maintain good health. Its benefits are now widely acknowledged all over the world, and in the past decade traditional acupuncture has begun to feature more prominently in mainstream healthcare in the UK. In conjunction with needling, the practitioner may use techniques such as moxibustion, cupping, massage or electro-acupuncture. They may also suggest dietary or lifestyle changes.. Traditional acupuncture takes a holistic approach to health and regards illness as a sign that the body is out of balance. The exact pattern and degree of imbalance is unique to each individual. The traditional acupuncturists skill lies in identifying the precise nature of the underlying disharmony and selecting the most effective treatment. The choice of acupuncture points will be specific to each patients needs. Traditional acupuncture can also be ...

Objective : Acupuncture (from the Latin acus, needle, and pungere, to prick) is a technique of inserting and manipulating fine needles at specific points on the body. As a placebo acupuncture needle device was developed based on the visual impact of needling, it has been raised that it is useful only when acupuncture points and needling are visible to subjects. To examine the visual factor of the placebo acupuncture, the present study was aimed to compare the blinding index of the verum and placebo acupuncture between masked and unmasked situation. Methods : Thirty-six patients were randomly alloted to be stimulated with a verum or placebo acupuncture in a cross-over design. They were asked to guess a right answer whether they were stimulated with the verum or placebo acupuncture at LI4 in an unmasked or masked situation. The penetrating, pain, and deqi sensations were also measured after the stimulation using modified visual analogue scale. Results : The correct answer rate of the placebo ...

Cancer is a complex systemic disease. As a key component of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is a clinically proven medical treatment for many diseases, and it also has preventative effects as it balances the body, allowing it to self-regulate. For cancer patients, acupuncture is widely used as complementary therapy to boost the immune system and reduce the side effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. However, few studies have determined how acupuncture against cancer, especially in regulating the intestinal flora of the tumor-burdened mice. We treated osteosarcoma tumor-burdened mice by using needling on different acupoints and acupoints combination, thereafter determined the effects of acupuncture on tumor growth by using imaging technology in vitro. In addition, intestinal bacteria were analyzed for further understanding the holistic and systemic treatment effects of acupuncture in osteosarcoma tumor-burdened mice. Acupuncture treatment can delay tumor growth and changes of intestinal

Acupuncture for the Knee. Acupuncture was applied to patients with total knee arthroplasty starting at day 7 following knee replacement surgery. Acupuncture was administered three times per week until day 21 when the treatment regime was discontinued. Range of motion improved, swelling measurably decreased and pain levels were significantly lower in the acupuncture study group than in the group that did not receive acupuncture therapy. As a result of these findings, the researchers conclude that acupuncture is effective in the post-acute phase of knee rehabilitation following total knee replacement surgery.. This study builds on earlier findings that acupuncture benefits the knee. In other recent research, investigators discovered that acupuncture reduces knee pain and increases range of motion for patients with osteoarthritis. An interesting study, it compared sham acupuncture with modern acupuncture and classical acupuncture techniques. The sham acupuncture, a form of simulated placebo ...

We are doing this study to investigate the effects of acupuncture on chronic low back pain. We are interested in learning about brain activity during pain. We plan to look at brain activity at the beginning and the end of the study, after 6 sessions of acupuncture treatment. You will be randomly assigned to one of two groups to receive either real or placebo acupuncture.. Acupuncture has been used for many years to help relieve pain. However, it is not clear how acupuncture works. Acupuncture may relieve pain by changing activity in the nervous system. Some studies indicate that acupuncture may relieve the low back pain. However, we need more research to see how well acupuncture works to relieve pain for people with this condition.. In this study, we will measure your brain activity before and after you do exercises to make your back pain worse. We will also measure your brain activity while inflating a pressure cuff device on your lower leg. We will measure this brain activity using a research ...

Traditional Chinese Medicine is a medical system that dates back nearly 4,000 years. Auricular acupuncture was first mentioned around 500 B.C. in the Yellow Emperors Classic of Internal Medicine, which is the equivalent of the Bible for TCM practitioners. However, the method in which auricular acupuncture is practiced today is actually based upon discoveries that occurred in France in the 1950s. Modern auricular acupuncture is based upon the work done by Dr. Paul Nogier of France.. Auricular acupuncture is the stimulation of the external ear for the diagnosis and treatment of health conditions. These health conditions may be taking place anywhere throughout the body. The stimulation of these acupuncture points can be done manually, with an acupuncture needle, a laser, magnets or ear seeds. Regardless of the means of stimulation, auricular acupuncture can be a very powerful addition to regular acupuncture treatments.. The current form of auricular acupuncture came about after Dr. Nogier noticed ...
Paralysis After Traumatic Brain Injury: Can Acupuncture Help?. Can acupuncture help patients with limb paralysis caused by traumatic brain injury (TBI)? A new study suggests it has promising potential. Published in the Chinese journal of Acupuncture Research, the study included 70 TBI patients divided into a medication group and an acupuncture plus medication group. The goal of the study: to observe the clinical effect of early acupuncture treatment of limb paralysis in patients with traumatic brain injury. The therapeutic effect of acupuncture plus medication was obviously superior to that of simple medication in lowering focal injured volume on day 14 and 28, and in increasing FMA and ADL-BI scores on day 28 and 60. … The therapeutic effect of acupuncture plus medication was [also] evidently superior to that of simple medication in lowering IL-6 on day 3 and 7, and in increasing BDNF and NGF levels on day 3, 7 and 14. The researchers concluded: Early acupuncture treatment can ...

Acupuncture needling is associated with increases in capillary tortuosity and diameter of afferent loop in the oral mucosa of health volunteers.. Many branches of medicine employ acupuncture by exploiting its proven effects such as the reduction of pain sensation, or reduction of nausea of chemotherapy or pregnancy. Research is conducted into new effects not yet proven, for example, variations in hormones such as angiotensin and its use in the complications of dysmetabolic pathologies such as diabetes.11 12 In the last two years, many studies have been made on the cardiocirculatory system and in particular on the modulation of the pressure values, on the use of acupuncture as an adjuvant to pharmacological therapies, on the reduction of cancer pain, on treatment of neuropathies and on the investigation of the effects of acupuncture on macro and microcirculation, especially at nail, skin and muscle layer level.13. A recent study conducted by Komori et al14 confirmed that acupuncture stimulation ...
Acupuncture can reduce migraine headaches compared to both sham (placebo) acupuncture and usual care, finds a new trial from China published by The BMJ today.. The researchers say doctors should provide information about acupuncture as an option when discussing preventive treatment strategies with patients.. More than one billion people worldwide are affected by migraine. It has considerable impact on quality of life and imposes a substantial burden on society. For people with frequent migraines, preventive treatments to reduce headache frequency are available, but not all patients respond well to drug therapy and many prefer to avoid it. Evidence for the benefit of acupuncture on migraine prevention has been mixed.. So a team of researchers based in China set out to compare the effectiveness of manual (real) acupuncture with sham (placebo) acupuncture or usual care.. Their findings are based on 147 patients (average age 37) with a history of migraine without aura who were recruited from seven ...
Acupuncture needles have been reported in bladder,2 ,11 nuchal and occipital area,4 shoulder girdle,12 spinal cord,3 ,13 right atrium,25 right ventricle,14 ,15 L5 nerve root,16 medulla oblongata,17 ,18 skin,19 carpal tunnel,20 calf21 and paraspinal muscle.22. Because the needle in our patient was not migrating, the only symptom he developed was fear about his general condition. However, patients may develop a whole range of symptoms depending on the location of the needle. In a case described by von Riedenauer et al acupuncture needles retained in a 25-year-old patient caused pneumothorax followed by dyspnoea.12 The acupuncture procedure had been carried out 5 years before this presentation, for treatment of right shoulder pain. A case of argyria (deposition of silver in the skin) caused by embedded acupuncture needles was also reported.19 Abumi et al described a 60-year-old patient who had a needle that penetrated to the medulla oblongata, which was discovered 18 years after the acupuncture ...
RESULTS: The results showed that the acupuncture group and the electro-acupuncture group could delay the time of requesting morphine up to 10 - 11 minutes when compared with the control group. The total dose of PCA used within the first 24 hours was 30% - 35% less in the acupuncture group and the electro-acupuncture group when compared with the control group, which was indicated in statistical significance. However, there was no significant difference between the acupuncture group and the electro-acupuncture group. The electro-acupuncture groups and the acupuncture groups pain scores were lower than the control groups within the first 2 hours. Both were statistically significant. However, two hours later, there were no significant differences of the visual analogue scale (VAS) scores between either of the treatment groups and the control group. Finally, the incidence of opioid-related side effects, such as dizziness, was less in the acupuncture group and electro-acupuncture group than in the ...
Recently more studies were published showing that acupuncture activates brain in patients with Parkinsons disease and patients with mild cognitive impairment. For example, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a new technique that helps researcher and clinicians understand brain function. Using this technique, we can see how acupuncture stimulates the brain and alters brain function. There was a study in which brain activation in response to acupuncture in a group of 12 patients with Parkinsons disease was compared with a group of 12 healthy participants. Acupuncture was conducted on a specific acupoint, the right GB 34 (Yanglingquan), which is a frequently used acupoint for motor function treatment. The result has shown that Acupuncture stimulation on this acupoint activates the prefrontal cortex, precentral gyrus, and putamen in patients with PD; areas that are known to be impaired in patients with PD. Compared with healthy participants, patients with PD showed significantly higher brain ...

This is me undergoing my daily acu-laser treatment. (I had no idea I look so sci-fi.) I asked Dr. Rosenfarb if he could provide an overview of how his laser acupuncture treatment works. Heres what he had to say.. Laser Acupuncture works by using photo-biomodulation (laser-light impulses) at specific acupuncture points around the body. It is believed that the bodys organ meridians in the Chinese Meridians exist at a light frequency. We use Acu-laser or light needle as a non-invasive way to stimulate certain acupuncture points that may benefit vision and improve function.. My general theory is that acupuncture works more on the Qi (energy) and Blood (circulation) level. Acupuncture opens the blockages and increases the flow of Qi and Blood to the eyes (branch symptom) and is also used to correct/support the underlying cause (root issue). Acupuncture does not add anything or take away from the body, it just helps regulate function. If the eyes receive oxygen, nutrients, fluids, glucose for ...
Mood Disorders. Anxiety. Anxiety disorders involve a state of distressing chronic but fluctuating nervousness that is inappropriately severe for the persons circumstances. Anxiety disorders affect over three million Americans each year. According to The Acupuncture Evidence Project, acupuncture has moderate evidence supporting the effectiveness of treating anxiety. Acupuncture can be safely combined conventional treatments such as medication or psycho-educational therapy, possibly enhancing their beneficial effects and reducing unwanted side effects.. Acupuncture can often be effective for treating anxiety even in people who are non-responders to cognitive behavioral therapy, bibliotherapy, and medication. In one study, non-responders were given one course of ten acupuncture treatments. They showed significant improvement on the Anxiety Inventory Score and their improvement was maintained for ten weeks after the acupuncture treatments. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25595195 It is ...

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have a higher risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). Acupuncture, a commonly used treatment for patients with RA, has not been reported to prevent CHD in patients with RA. We aimed to assess the risk of developing CHD in acupuncture users and non-users of patients with RA. We identified 29,741 patients with newly diagnosed RA from January 1997 to December 2010 from the Registry of Catastrophic Illness Patients Database from the Taiwanese National Health Insurance Research Database. Among them, 10,199 patients received acupuncture (acupuncture users), and 19,542 patients did not receive acupuncture (no-acupuncture users). After performing 1:1 propensity score matching by sex, age, baseline comorbidity, conventional treatment, initial diagnostic year, and index year, there were 9932 patients in both the acupuncture and no-acupuncture cohorts. The main outcome was the diagnosis of CHD in patients with RA in the acupuncture and no-acupuncture cohorts. Acupuncture users
Some veterinarians use non-traditional techniques in treating animals, often combining these with traditional medicine. One of the most useful complementary modalities is acupuncture. Dr. Bruce Connally, an equine sports medicine veterinarian in Colorado, grew up in Wyoming and practiced for many years in Buffalo. He has been using acupuncture since 1999.. Understanding acupuncture. I took a veterinary acupuncture course at Colorado State University. I use acupuncture for treating pain in many situations, but also as a diagnostic aid, he explains. There are acupuncture trigger points all over the horses body. He continues, The ones along the back and hips are fairly easy to figure out. Theres also a trigger point in the side of the neck that affects the stifle. Its not quite so easy to understand, but Ive seen it work.. There is a trigger point in the shoulder and another in the girth area that have to do with front foot pain, he says. I am a trigger-point acupuncturist. Im not a ...
In this study, we found that acupuncture ameliorated spatial learning and memory deficits and enhanced hippocampal LTP in a VD model. The therapeutic effects may be associated with dopamine system, as manifested by increased expression of dopamine, dopamine metabolites, and dopamine receptors in the hippocampus induced by acupuncture. Moreover, the D1/D5 receptor antagonist SCH23390 significantly abolished the benefits induced by acupuncture, supporting this contention.. VD is a progressive neurodegenerative disease, and the main symptom is cognition dysfunction.19 As an economic and convenient therapeutic method, acupuncture stimulation can be applied in relieving symptoms of VD.10,12 Because of the complexity of the disease, acupuncture point combination enhances the efficacy compared with single acupuncture point. Previous clinical studies selected point combination for the treatment of stroke and dementia.9,20,21 However, which point combination method is the most effective for the treatment ...

Acupuncture is a method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing and to improve functioning by inserting needles at very precise acupuncture points to cure disease or alleviate pain. Because acupuncture is an entire system of medicine and not just one specialty, it can conceivably be used to treat any disease or disorder. It is one of the most widely recognized and successful methods of alternative treatment in the world. Its effectiveness in treating a wide variety of disorders has been clinically proven. Not only is it safe, but it does not cause any of the toxic side effects that might be associated with ingesting many pharmaceuticals.. The classical Chinese explanation is that channels of energy (called meridians) run in regular patterns through the body and over its surface. An obstruction in the movement of these energy rivers is like a dam that backs up in others.. The meridians can be influenced by needling the acupuncture points; the acupuncture needles unblock the ...
A review article that appeared in Practical Pain Management found that pain relief with acupuncture comes from inactivating the source of pain by modulating endorphin levels. But other mechanisms, such as cellular changes and activation of specific brain centres were also shown to play a role in pain management using acupuncture.. Interestingly, the use of acupuncture on animals is increasing to remedy specific medical conditions. These conditions are commonly related to neurological dysfunction or orthopedic pain. This negates the claim that acupuncture is only placebo effect.. Although acupuncture is not always the magic cure, in my experience, the responsible use of acupuncture (and other related therapies, such as moxibustion, cupping and electro-acupuncture) by a professional practitioner, can many times reduce pain to a manageable level.. ...
Acupuncture has relatively good evidence in the literature for treatment of chronic nonspecific low back pain. Several studies show that it can work better than ususal care which includes medications or physical therapy. Interestingly, randomized controlled trials did not show acupuncture to be superior to a sham acupuncture procedure. Acupuncture treatments usually consist of weekly visits, and it may take up to 5 session before noticing a benefit. Because of the out-of-pocket expense, acupuncture is often not the first line of treatment for low back pain. Patients I treat have usually failed all other treatments. Despite this, I am still able to get some results in this difficult population. Due to its good safety profile and minimally invasive nature, I think acupuncture is a good option for anyone that wants to try a more alternative approach to low back pain ...
Laser acupuncture (LA) has been utilized as a combined approach of Chinese traditional acupuncture and low-level laser therapy since its emergence in 1973. Its mechanisms are not well understood and the standardization of clinical protocols has not been established. In this study, we used a diode laser to irradiate on four acupuncture points for normal subjects to investigate the effect of LA. For each point, the irradiation lasted for three minutes. The median nerve conduction velocity was measured within a 30 minutes interval at day 1, day 5, and day 10 respectively. Patients with chronic carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) were given LA therapy for three stages at most with a one-week interval between two stages. Treatment outcome measurements included patients subjective feedback (McGill pain questionnaire, VAS) and objective measurements (physical examination, kinesiological properties and NCSs). It was a randomized single-blind controlled trial. For normal subjects, motor nerve fiber was ...

Fourth-year students on morning rounds in the large animal hospital last Friday had an opportunity to see acupuncture in action. Dr. Jacob Mecham was treating a horse with a paralyzed arytenoid cartilage in her larynx by placing acupuncture needles in her neck. Student Melissa Flora helped by reading a list of designated locations from a treatment protocol to Dr. Mecham as he moved around the horse carefully twirling the needles into place.. Students Sarah Tremper and Whitney Madigan managed the scope that Dr. Mecham had inserted through the horses nose to view the larynx on a screen. What was really neat about it is that they were running the endoscope so we could visualize the larynx while the acupuncture was happening to look for any immediate changes, says Flora.. The treatment protocol was the result of a study done by Dr. Shen Huisheng Xie of the Chi Institute where Dr. Mecham received his acupuncture training. Dr. Mecham recently completed 130 hours of lectures and labs, and passed a ...
Acupuncture enhance immune action trigger the body resistance to fight against the diseases are increased. This effect is mediated by a raise in leucocyte count, antibody titer and gamma-globulins. Acupuncture is therefore, is very useful in combating infections and it is more so when the prolonged antibiotic therapy is warranted or in cases of resistance or hypersensitivity to antibiotic. This action is again specific to certain acupuncture points. Few acupuncture points such as Bahui, Hegu, Quichi are well known as having sedative effect. EEG taken during the treatment has shown a decrease in delta and theta wave activity. This effect is the basis of utilizing acupuncture for the treatment of anxiety states, nervous, restlessness, drug addicts, anti smoking, insomnia and other behavior disorders. It has been observed that a 20 to 30 minutes continuous manipulation of Taichong - Liv 3 of the toe alone reduces blood pressure from 200 / 110 mm Hg to 180 / 95 mm Hg which lasts for 3 to 4 days. ...

Acupuncture is an ancient traditional Chinese medicine which focuses on balancing energy pathways in the body to promote optimal health. According to this theory, an imbalance of these forces promotes disease by blocking pathways, or meridians, that allow the unrestricted flow of vital energy, or qi, throughout your body. Acupuncture aims to unblock your vital energy flow by targeting specific points on your body related to these meridians.. Acupuncture improves the bodys functions and promotes the natural self-healing process by stimulating specific anatomic sites, commonly referred to as acupuncture points, or acupoints. The most common method used to stimulate acupoints is the insertion of fine, sterile needles into the skin. Pressure, heat, or electrical stimulation may further enhance the effects. Acupuncture points are thought to have certain electrical properties, which affect chemical neurotransmitters in the body. According to theories of traditional Chinese medicine, the human body ...
