Recycling of actinides by their separation from spent nuclear fuel, followed by transmutation in fast neutron reactors of Generation IV, is considered the most promising strategy for nuclear waste management. Closing the fuel cycle and burning long-lived actinides allows optimizing the use of natural resources and minimizing the long-term hazard of high-level nuclear waste. Moreover, improving the safety and sustainability of nuclear power worldwide. Phosphates are known to exhibit superior resistance to radiation damage, as evidenced by natural phosphate minerals that are minimally damaged despite containing alpha-emitting actinides for hundreds of millions of years. This study looks to investigate radiation damage in xenotime (YPO4) and zircon (ZrSiO4). Radiation damage occurs by two processes: the recoil of the heavy nucleus (70-100 keV) and the alpha particle itself (4.5-5.5 MeV), which loses energy primarily by ionizations but causes several hundred atomic displacements near the end of its path. Here we present results of Pu doping into xenotime, with insight into solid solubility and response to radiation damage compared to previous results for zircon. An understanding of the effect of cumulative radiation damage on the integrity of ceramic wasteforms for plutonium and minor actinide disposition is key to the scientific case for safe disposal. Alpha recoil due to the decay of actinide species leads to the amorphisation of the initially crystalline host matrix, with potentially deleterious consequences such as macroscopic volume swelling and reduced resistance to aqueous dissolution. The level density and γ-ray strength function (γSF) of 243Pu have been measured in the quasicontinuum using the Oslo method. Excited states in 243Pu were populated using the 242Pu(d,p) reaction. The level density closely follows the constant-temperature level density formula for excitation energies above the pairing gap. The γSF displays a double-humped resonance at low energy as also seen in previous investigations of actinide isotopes. Cadmium (Cd) concentration in soil solution and its bioavailability is controlled by sorption-desorption reactions. The objective of this research was to compare Cd adsorption behavior in six calcareous and four acid soils. Soil samples were equilibrated with 0.01 M Ca(NO3)2 containing 25 to 3200 mg Cd L−1. Results showed that the tendency for adsorption was high at low Cd concentrations (0-400 mg L-1), but decreased as the Cd increased (400-3200 mg L-1). Among five equations evaluated, Freundlich, Langmuir, and Gunary equations best described Cd adsorption in both calcareous and acid soils as indicated by high values for coefficient of determination (R2) and low values for standard error of estimate (SE). Stepwise regression equations between constants of the best-fitted models and soil properties revealed that cation exchange capacity (CEC) and clay content were the most important soil properties affecting Cd adsorption behavior in calcareous soils, whereas in acid soils Cd adsorption was mainly

Pulsed-laser photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) and Fourier-transform nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy were used to study speciation of actinide(IV) and actinide(VI) ions (Np, Pu, Am) in aqueous carbonate solutions vs pH, carbonate content, actinide content, temperature. PAS focused on Pu(IV) speciation. Stability fields on a pH (8.4 to 12.0) versus total carbonate content (0.003 to 1.0 M) plot for dilute Pu(IV) carbonate species ([Pu]{sub tot} = 1 mM) were mapped. Four plutonium species, with absorption peaks at 486, 492, 500, and 512 nm were found. Loss of a single carbonate ligand does not account for the difference in speciation for the 486 and 492 nm absorption peaks, nor can any of the observed species be identified as colloidal Pu(IV). Series of novel hydrogels based on 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) and itaconic acid (IA), P(HEA/IA) copolymers, were prepared by free radical cross-linking copolymerization and investigated as potential adsorbents for Cd2+ removal from aqueous solution. The hydrogels before and after Cd2+ adsorption were characterized using FTIR, temperature sensitive. In order to evaluate adsorption behavior of samples various factors affecting the Cd2+ uptake behavior, such as: contact time, temperature, pH, ionic strength, adsorbent weight, competitive ions and initial concentration of the metal ions were investigated. My research program will develop the molecular and solid-state coordination chemistry of the f-elements for unique and scalable solutions to contemporary problems in energy use. Applications in energy conversion (photochemical, magnetic) and transport (electrical) and in information storage and processing will be sought. Two aspects of the radionuclide source terms used for total-system performance assessment (TSPA) analyses have been reviewed. First, a detailed radionuclide inventory (i.e., one in which the reactor type, decay, and burnup are specified) is compared with the standard source-term inventory used in prior analyses. The latter assumes a fixed ratio of pressurized-water reactor (PWR) to boiling-water reactor (BWR) spent fuel, at specific amounts of burnup and at 10-year decay. TSPA analyses have been used to compare the simplified source term with the detailed one. The TSPA-91 analyses did not show a significant difference between the source terms. Second, the radionuclides used in source terms for TSPA aqueous-transport analyses have been reviewed to select ones that are representative of the entire inventory. The adsorption behaviour of 2H-5,10,15,20-tetraphenyltetrabenzoporphyrin (2HTPTBP) on different metal surfaces, i.e., Ag(111), Cu(111), Cu(110), and Cu(110)-(2 ? 1)O was investigated by scanning tunnelling microscopy at room temperature. The adsorption of 2HTPTBP on Ag(111) leads to the formation of a well- ordered two-dimensional (2D) island structure due to the mutual stabilization through the intermolecular p-p stacking and T-type-like interactions of phenyl and benzene substituents of neighboring molecules. For 2HTPTBP on Cu(111), the formed 2D supramolecular structures exhibit a coverage-dependent behaviour, which can be understood from the interplay of molecule-substrate and molecule-molecule interactions. OBJETIVOS: Analisar a eficácia e a segurança da drenagem pericárdica videotoracoscópica no tratamento e diagnóstico etiológico dos derrames pericárdicos por meio da revisão de 26 casos. MÉTODOS: De abril de 2005 a dezembro de 2007, 26 pacientes com derrame pericárdico foram submetidos ao procedimento. A média etária foi de 48,2 anos. O sintoma mais comum foi dispnéia, seguida por dor torácica. O procedimento foi realizado em decúbito lateral, sob anestesia geral e intubação seletiva, com o auxílio de três trocateres. RESULTADOS: A realização do procedimento foi possível em 25 casos. Ocorreu uma conversão. Em 61,53% dos casos, o procedimento foi capaz de alterar o diagnóstico inicial. Culturas e microbiologia foram negativas em todos os casos. Achados compatíveis com neoplasia estavam presentes em nove casos, tuberculose em dois, aspergilose em um, pós-cirúrgico em três, lúpico em dois, urêmico em um e oito idiopáticos.
