The total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, vitamin C content, and antioxidant activities of ethanol extracts from different kiwifruit varieties (Actinidia kolomikta, Actinidia arguta, Actinidia chinensis) were determined in this study. Multiple scavenging activity assays including the hydroxyl radical, O2−·radical, DPPH, and the ABTS+ radical scavenging activity assays were used to identify the antioxidant activities of Actinidia extracts. The cell viability of HepG2 and HT-29 cells was also examined in this study. The results demonstrated that the Actinidia kolomikta extract had a higher antioxidant activity than the other two Actinidia extracts. There is a positive correlation between antioxidant activity and the polyphenols and vitamin C content in all three extracts (R2 ≥ 0.712, p | 0.05). The Actinidia arguta extract had the highest inhibitory effect on HepG2 and HT-29 cell growth. These results provide new insight into the health functions of fruit and demonstrate that Actinidia
Restricted Item. Print thesis available in the University of Auckland Library or available through Inter-Library Loan. Kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa var. deliciosa) is a species particularly important to the New Zealand economy yet little is known of the genetics or origins of its hexaploid genome. The aim of this thesis was to investigate interspecific and intraspecific relationships of kiwifruit and in particular to determine whether the kiwifruit genome had arisen primarily via an autopolyploid or allopolyploid mechanism. Phylogenetic relationships between A. deliciosa and three of its closest relatives within the same section of the genus Actinidia were investigated using restriction fragment length polymorphism and the data used to generate a phylogenetic tree depicting this relationship. The four species were differentiated into two pairings, A. chinensis with A. deliciosa and A. eriantha with A. latifolia. The results support the known close taxonomic relationship between diploid A. ...

Actinidia Chinensis Planch roots (acRoots) are used to treat many cancers, although the anti-tumor mechanism by which acRoots inhibit cancer cell growth remains unclear. The present study aims at investigating inhibitory effects of acRoots on human lung cancer cells and potential mechanisms. Our data demonstrate that the inhibitory effects of acRoots on lung cancer cells depend on genetic backgrounds and phenotypes of cells. We furthermore found the expression of metabolism-associated gene profiles varied between acRoots-hypersensitive (H460) or hyposensitive lung cancer cells (H1299) after screening lung cancer cells with different genetic backgrounds. We selected retinoic acid receptor beta (RARB) as the core target within metabolism-associated core gene networks and evaluated RARB changes and roles in cells treated with acRoots at different concentrations and timeframes. Hypersensitive cancer cells with the deletion of RARB expression did not response to the treatment with acRoots, while RARB ...
Actinidia eriantha Benth. is a diploid perennial woody vine native to China and is recognized as a valuable species for commercial kiwifruit improvement with high levels of ascorbic acid as well as having been used in traditional Chinese medicine. Due to the lack of genomic resources for the species, microsatellite markers for population genetics studies are scarce. In this study, RNASeq was conducted on fruit tissue of A. eriantha, yielding 5,678,129 reads with a total output of 3.41 Gb. De novo assembly yielded 69,783 non-redundant unigenes (41.3 Mb), of which 21,730 were annotated using protein databases. A total of 8,658 EST-SSR loci were identified in 7,495 unigene sequences, for which primer pairs were successfully designed for 3,842 loci (44.4 %). Among these, 183 primer pairs were assayed for PCR amplification, yielding 69 with detectable polymorphism in A. eriantha. Additionally, 61 of the 69 polymorphic loci could be successfully amplified in at least one other Actinidia species. Of these, 14
Bacterial canker of kiwifruit, caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa), is a disease that is spreading rapidly in several kiwifruit-producing countries, causing significant economic losses. In 2011, it was detected for the first time in Spain, in the south of Galicia (northwest Spain). Kiwifruit orchards were therefore inspected and sampled in 2011 and 2012 to determine the pathogen distribution, and the isolates obtained were characterized by morphology, fatty acids profile, biochemical tests and molecular techniques. Isolates were obtained from Actinidia deliciosa 'Hayward' (from leaves, canes, flower buds, fruits and roots), from A.deliciosa 'Summer', from Actinidia chinensis 'Jin Tao' (from canes and leaves) and from A.chinensis pollinator 'Belen' (from canes). Results of the analysis of the cfl gene (phytotoxin production-related), the tox-argK gene cluster and phylogenetic analysis of the cts gene demonstrated that all Psa isolates from northwest ...

The replacement of fruit allergen extracts with component-resolved allergens seems tobe a promising concept. In this regard, the evaluation of allergenic properties of aparticular allergen candidate for component-resolved diagnosis needs to be performed. In this study evaluation of the biochemical and allergenic properties of cysteineproteinase inhibitor purified from green kiwifruit (nCPI) was performed. The IgEreactivity was detected both in vitro (dot blot) and in vivo (skin prick test and basophileactivation assay), while IgG rectivity in both Western blot analysis nd ELISA test.Biological activity was assesed by examining the growth inhibition of three plantpathogenic bacterial strains (A.tumefaciens, B. cepacia and, to a lesser extent, E.carotovora) and two phytopathogenic fungi (A. radicina and B. cinerea) both in vitroand in vivo. Due to low abundance of nCPI molecule in kiwifruit the coding sequence ofkiwi CPI was efficiently expressed in Escherichia coli. Molecular identity of... rCPI ...

Italys kiwifruit growers are considered to be world-leading players of the past 20 years. However, with this success come its challenges. In the last five years, a bacterial canker of kiwifruit known as Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa) has caused a dramatic reduction in the size of the areas cultivated, leading to several experienced Piedmontese Actinidia deliciosa growers beginning to cultivate the A. arguta. To better understand the potential for replacing the common kiwifruit in Italys Piedmont region with plantations of A. arguta and to attain a systematic approach and support for decision situations; we assessed the environmental impact of the two production chains (field and storage) from a technical-operational perspective. The assessment was conducted through interviews with producers, field and warehouse technicians and sales managers in order to reveal the strengths and weaknesses of the two systems. The work presented below considers the application of the Life Cycle Assessment
The anatomical investigation of the main vegetative organs of 14 species and varieties in the Actinidia of Henan is under taken in the present paper. The conclusion is as follows:(1)It is possible for the petiolar traces of fruit shoots to trace this progress from arc through circle to circle acompanied by the medullary bundles.(2)The type of the occurence and linkage on the two dorsal cortical bundles in the petiole is the same as the type of the lateral veins. They may be parts of the lateral veins.(3)leaf structure of the cross section in the genus is divided into three types. The first is the shade-adapted type of the high mountains,in which the differences between palisade tissue and the spongy tissue is less obvious. The Second is the shade-induring type where palisade tissue is as developed as the spongy tissue. And the third is the light-loving type whose palisade tissue is much more developed than the spongy tissue. The ecological habits would be considered when the plants are introduced and

Bacterial canker is a destructive disease of kiwifruit caused by the Gram-negative bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa). To understand the disease-causing mechanism of Psa, a kiwifruit yeast two-hybrid cDNA library was constructed to identify putative host targets of the Psa Type Three Secreted Effector AvrPto5. In this study, we used the Mate & Plate™ yeast two-hybrid library method for constructing a kiwifruit cDNA library from messenger RNA of young leaves. The constructed library consisted of 2.15 × 106 independent clones with an average insert size of 1.52 kb. The screening of the kiwifruit yeast two-hybrid cDNA library with Psa AvrPto5 revealed the interaction of a V-type proton ATPase subunit-H, a proline rich-protein and heavy metal-associated isoprenylated plant protein 26. Among these, heavy metal-associated isoprenylated plant protein 26 showed a positive interaction with Psa AvrPto5 as both prey and bait.

In the late 1970s kiwifruit was hailed as a golden harvest because of the industrys explosive growth. Financial success and the appeal of the orchardists lifestyle attracted investors and new growers, and kiwifruit-growing expanded to new areas such as Northland and Hawkes Bay.. However, unstable interest rates and exchange rates and increased world supplies of kiwifruit led to an industry crisis between 1987 and 1989. Some growers felt bitter that overseas growers were raising kiwifruit from plant stock originally exported from New Zealand - ironically, kiwifruit promoters had created their own competition.. In a tough world market, many exporters competed to sell kiwifruit, driving down the price of the New Zealand fruit. Growers responded by lobbying government to regulate the export sector.. ...

The aim of this study was to develop a rapid, sensitive and reliable field-based assay for detection of the quarantine pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae, the causal agent of the most destructive and economically important bacterial disease of kiwifruit. A comparative genomic approach was used on the publicly available P. syringae pv. actinidiae genomic data to select unique target regions for the development of two loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assays able to detect P. syringae pv. actinidiae and to discriminate strains belonging to the highly virulent and globally spreading P. syringae pv. actinidiae biovar 3. Both LAMP assays showed specificity in accordance to their target and were able to detect reliably 125 CFU per reaction in less than 30 min. The developed assays were able to detect the presence of P. syringae pv. actinidiae in symptomatic as well as in asymptomatic naturally infected kiwifruit material, thus increasing the potential of the LAMP assays for ...
The excitement of Opening Night in the NBA quickly faded as Celtics forward Gordon Hayward suffered a traumatic leg injury just minutes into the first game of the season. Hayward was immediately tended to by the Boston medical team as players from both teams averted their eyes from the gruesome scene.. Footage of the injury showed Haywards left ankle violently twisted at an unnatural angle, indicating a dislocation of the ankle. ESPN reports the dislocation was reset on the court. A quick reduction is important to minimize any potential neurovascular problems. It can also provide pain relief for the injured individual. Further testing performed in the arena confirmed these speculations and revealed a fractured tibia. According to NBC Sports Boston reporter A. Sherrod Blakely, Hayward was transported by Medflight back to Boston and is expected to undergo surgery shortly.. Determining how long Hayward will be sidelined is difficult as injuries of this magnitude rarely have a good comparison, ...
In the 19th century, the land that is now Hayward became part of Rancho San Lorenzo, a Spanish land grant to Guillermo Castro in 1841. The site of his home was on the former El Camino Viejo, or Castro Street (now Mission Boulevard) between C and D Streets, but the structure was severely damaged in the 1868 Hayward earthquake, with the Hayward Fault running directly under its location. Most of the citys structures were destroyed in the earthquake, the last major earthquake on the fault. In 1930, that site was chosen for the construction of the City Hall, which served the city until 1969.[17]. William Dutton Hayward arrived during the gold rush and "squatted", started building a house, next to the creek at the site of the old Polamares School. Guillermo Castros Vaqueros came by one day and told Hayward to get off of Castros property. William did leave, but went to Guillermo Castro directly and asked to buy a piece of his land. Castro sold him the area of what was east of Castro Street, now ...
Location: Kiwifruit will tolerate part shade but prefer a sunny location where they can ramble across some type of trellising system. The vines should be protected from strong winds. Spring gusts can snap off new growth where it emerges from the canes. Kiwifruit is not recommended for the hot dessert climates of the Southwest.. Site Preparation: Kiwifruit plants need a substantial trellis, patio cover, or other permanent place to grow upon. For the trellis system, either a single wire or T-bar system can be installed. Both have a 4 inch by 4 inch redwood post of 8 feet. For the T-bar, a 2 inch by 6 inch crossarm about 4 feet long is bolted in place. Bury the post 2 feet into the ground and cement in if at all possible. At each end of the system, a cemented deadman should be in place. Run wires across the posts and anchor tautly to the deadman. When using a patio cover, no extra trellising needs to be in place. Simply run the plant up a corner post to the top and allow the plant to then form a ...
Literature reports describe kiwi fruit as a food with significant effects on human health, including anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Fresh fruit or raw kiwi fruit extracts have been used so far to investigate these effects, but the molecule(s) responsible for these health-promoting activities have not yet been identified. Kissper is a kiwi fruit peptide displaying pore-forming activity in synthetic lipid bilayers, the composition of which is similar to that found in intestinal cells. The objective of this study was to investigate the kissper influence on intestinal inflammation using cultured cells and ex-vivo tissues from healthy subjects and Crohns disease (CD) patients. The anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of kissper were tested on Caco-2 cells and on the colonic mucosa from 23 patients with CD, by challenging with the lipopolysaccharide from Escherichia coli (EC-LPS) and monitoring the appropriate markers by Western blot and immunofluorescence. EC-LPS challenge ...

Kiwivax is a WP Root Drench for the reduction of Psa symptoms in Kiwifruit vines. It has now been registered with ACVM with this limited label claim. Kiwivax is a direct result of the research carried out by Dr Robert Hill and his team, headed up by Dr Christine Stark, at the Bio-Protection Research Centre at Lincoln University. The active ingredient is a blend of 3 strains of Trichoderma that have been shown to form close associations with kiwifruit roots. Application of these strains to the soil of seedlings and potted plants results in lower disease score and greater plant survival when directly challenged with Psa-V. These root associated fungi have also been re-isolated from treated kiwifruit vine roots at least 3-4 months after application. Kiwivax colonises fresh feeder roots and so the optimum application times are after root flushes. Kiwivax is on the Crop Protection Standard with application through Springtime and Post-harvest. Zespri can authorise a JA to apply outside these windows. ...
Mass transfer rates were quantitatively investigated during osmotic dehydration of kiwifruit slices using response surface methodology with the sucrose concentration (20-80%, w/w), temperature of sucrose solution (15-75°C), osmotic time (60-420 min), and slice thickness (2-10 mm) as the independent process variables. Quadratic regression equations are obtained to describe the effects of independent process variables on the water loss (WL), sucrose gain (SG), and ascorbic acid loss (AAL). It was found that all factors had significant effect on the WL during osmotic dehydration of kiwifruit. Effects of temperature, time, and slice thickness were more pronounced on SG than the effect of concentration of sucrose solution. The osmotic solution temperature was the most significant factor affecting the AAL, followed by slice thickness and duration of treatment. The optimal conditions for osmotic dehydration were: 60% sucrose concentration, 30-40°C osmotic temperature, 150 min osmotic time, and 8 mm ...

Kiwis are generally available in most supermarkets all year round. The most common kiwi is the Hayward which has green flesh and is covered with brown fuzz. Gold kiwis have smooth bronze-colored skin and are pointy at one end. The flesh is mustard colored and quite flavorful. The gold kiwi is also higher in both vitamins C, E and lutein/zeaxanthin. New hybrids include the baby kiwis which are green, smooth, about the size of table grapes, and eaten much like them. When you shop for kiwi, choose plump ones that yield slightly to the touch. Avoid those that are shriveled, moldy or have soft spots. You can easily ripen kiwifruit by leaving it at room temperature for a few days or to speed up the process, put the kiwifruit in a dry paper bag along with an apple or banana.. Most people dont realize that you can eat the kiwi skin after rubbing off the fuzz. The skin is actually quite nutritious. If you want to skip the skin, the easiest way to prepare a kiwi is to simply slice it in half and scoop ...

Yes, the Hayward Valve is worthless, no actually it is worse than worthless. What a pain. Surely, there is an engineer that can come up with a better product and apparently they dont work at Hayward. If you want your pool to be emptied by this valve (down to skimmer level) when you are not expecting it go ahead and purchase it. The spider web gasket is a huge problem, of course chlorine dissolves it, but replacing one is almost impossible, that is, if you expect it to work properly. Leaks leaks, and more leaks. Put the new one in and glue it according to Haywards instructions and cross your finger and hope it doesnt leak, and it probably will. Overall, a dismal product that needs to be re-engineered by someone who cares about whether or not it works properly. The amount of money spent new replacement water I have had to put in my pool due to this lousy valve is crazy ...
