The present study evaluated quantitative sleep criteria to distinguish individuals with insomnia from good sleepers using two assessment methods. Sleep diary measures produced areas under the curves (AUC) in the high range (0.84-0.97), whereas actigraphy performed poorly at discriminating the two groups (AUC 0.58-0.61). The Youden Index identified SOL = 17.7 minutes, WASO = 20.7 minutes, SE awake = 92.1%, SE OOB = 83.8%, and TST = 388.1 minutes as the sleep diary measures that yielded the highest sensitivity and specificity values, with diary-measured SE awake performing best at differentiating the groups. Our study appears to be the first to examine quantitative sleep thresholds using sleep diary and actigraphy among a sample of older adults who were not required to meet specific quantitative severity thresholds for entry into the study. The aims of this paper were to provide an overview of available activity monitors used in research in patients with heart failure and to identify the key criteria in the selection of the most appropriate activity monitor for collecting, reporting, and analysing physical activity in heart failure research. This study was conducted in three parts. First, the literature was systematically reviewed to identify physical activity concepts and activity monitors used in heart failure research. Second, an additional scoping literature search for validation of these activity monitors was conducted. Third, the most appropriate criteria in the selection of activity monitors were identified. Sleep disturbance has been found to trigger a stress response with a subsequent activation of the psychoneuroimmunological (PNI) pathway associated with adverse health outcomes. This study aimed to assess the association among selected PNI biomarkers, sleep disturbances, and adverse health outcomes (depressive symptoms, physical symptoms). A stratified, quota sample (14 poor sleepers and 15 good sleepers) was drawn from a pool of healthy college women from a larger scale of study. The participants reported their sleep, stress, depressive, and physical symptoms. Wrist actigraphy was used to collect objective sleep data, and the Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay was used to assess PNI biomarkers. Poor sleep quality, higher stress perception, elevated serum serotonin, and lower serum interleukin-10 explained 75.3% of the variances for the depressive symptoms. Previous studies have investigated genetic markers of sleep in the general population using circadian candidate gene and genome wide association (GWA) study designs. The effects of PER3 variants, especially the variable number tandem repeats (VNTR), have been associated with many phenotypes including diurnal preference and sleep loss/circadian misalignment. Abnormalities in sleep and circadian rhythms are central features of bipolar disorder (BP), often persisting between episodes. We report here, to our knowledge, the first systematic analysis of circadian rhythm activity in pedigrees segregating severe BP (BP-I). By analyzing actigraphy data obtained from members of 26 Costa Rican and Colombian pedigrees [136 euthymic (i.e., interepisode) BP-I individuals and 422 non-BP-I relatives], we delineated 73 phenotypes, of which 49 demonstrated significant heritability and 13 showed significant trait-like association with BP-I. All BP-I-associated traits related to activity level, with BP-I individuals consistently demonstrating lower activity levels than their non-BP-I relatives. Retirement living may facilitate physical activity by reducing health, social, and environmental barriers for seniors. The purpose of this thesis was to: (1) quantify changes in physical activity and physical function over the transition to retirement living; (2) examine the relationship between participant characteristics and physical activity in retirement living; and (3) describe the relationship between change in physical activity and change in physical and cognitive function. The objectives of this Study were to explore whether triaxial is more accurate than uniaxial accelerometry and whether shorter sampling periods (epochs) are more accurate than longer epochs. Physical activity data from uniaxial and triaxial (RT3) devices were collected in 1-s epochs from 31 preschool children (15 males, 16 females, 4.4 +/- 0.8 yrs) who were videoed while they engaged in 1-hr of free-play. Video data were coded using the Childrens Activity Rating Scale (CARS).
