The current study demonstrates that MCA, determined by acoustic pharyngometry, can significantly differentiate between those with mild/no-OSA versus moderate-to-severe OSA. When analyzed alongside other variables such as gender, age, and neck circumference, acoustic pharyngometry was the only independent predictor of detecting the absence of moderate-to-severe OSA. This easily obtained measurement thus has potential utility as a component in a diagnostic algorithm for OSA. With healthcare reform, sleep testing may become less readily available, making decisions to prioritize testing in certain patients important.. Acoustic pharyngometry may also be a useful objective tool in occupational health clinics. A non-destructive and novel in situ acoustic sensor approach based on the sound absorption spectra was developed for identifying and classifying different seed types. The absorption coefficient spectra were determined by using the impedance tube measurement method. Subsequently, a multivariate statistical analysis, i.e., principal component analysis (PCA), was performed as a way to generate a classification of the seeds based on the soft independent modelling of class analogy (SIMCA) method. The results show that the sound absorption coefficient spectra of different seed types present characteristic patterns which are highly dependent on seed size and shape. In general, seed particle size and sphericity were inversely related with the absorption coefficient. PCA presented reliable grouping capabilities within the diverse seed types, since the 95% of the total spectral variance was described by the first two principal components. Purpose: To measure the acoustic signal generated by a pulsed proton spill from a hospital-based clinical cyclotron. Methods: An electronic function generator modulated the IBA C230 isochronous cyclotron to create a pulsed proton beam. The acoustic emissions generated by the proton beam were measured in water using a hydrophone. The acoustic measurements were repeated with increasing proton current and increasing distance between detector and beam. Results: The cyclotron generated proton spills with rise times of 18 μs and a maximum measured instantaneous proton current of 790 nA. Acoustic emissions generated by the proton energy deposition were measured to be on the order of mPa. The origin of the acoustic wave was identified as the proton beam based on the correlation between acoustic emission arrival time and distance between the hydrophone and proton beam. The computing system calculates an average maximum pit depth value of a plurality of pits in an outer surface of a pipe wall of the pipe from a known initial pipe wall thickness value and an average present pipe wall thickness value. The computing system also calculates a minimum present pipe wall thickness by applying a statistical technique to the calculated average maximum pit depth value. The physiological mechanisms and acoustic principles underlying sound production in primates are important for analyzing and synthesizing primate vocalizations, for determining the range of calls that are physically producible, and for understanding primate communication in the broader comparative context of what is known about communication in other vertebrates. In this paper we discuss what is known about vocal production in nonhuman primates, relying heavily on models from speech and musical acoustics. We first describe the role of the lungs and larynx in generating the sound source, and then discuss the effects of the supralaryngeal vocal tract in modifying this source. We conclude that more research is needed to resolve several important questions about the acoustics of primate calls, including the nature of the vocal tracts contribution to call production. Integration of the microcomputer into acoustic emission instrumentation has brought AE monitoring of fatigue tests into the realm of practicality. On-line processing makes available a selection of software tools, enhancing classical techniques for eliminating the background noise which usually blanked out the desired data. Fatigue tests monitored for acoustic emission were carried out at room temperature on Incoloy 901 material specimens, over a stress-ratio range of −1 ≤ R ≤ .2. Valid AE data were obtained even when the load cycle passed through zero. The AE data permitted specific identification of the various phenomena occurring on the way to final failure. These included initial plasticity, crack nucleation and propagation phases. The AE findings were supported by microscopic examination. Based on the experimental data, a preliminary damage-prediction model was formulated.. ...
Detection of disseminating tumor cells among patients suffering from various types and stages of cancer can function as an early warning system, alerting the physician of the metastatic spread or recurrence of the disease. Early detection of such cells can result in preventative treatment of the disease, while late stage detection can serve as an indicator of the effectiveness of chemotherapeutics. The prognostic value of exposing disseminating tumor cells poses an urgent need for an efficient, accurate screening method for metastatic cells. We propose a system for the detection of metastatic circulating tumor cells based on the thermoelastic properties of melanoma. The method employs photoacoustic excitation coupled with a detection system capable of determining the presence of disseminating cells within the circulatory system in vitro.
