NORTH, Michelle A. et al. Suspected lead poisoning in two captive cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus jubatus) in South Africa, in 2008 and 2013. J. S. Afr. Vet. Assoc. [online]. 2015, vol.86, n.1, pp.01-05. ISSN 2224-9435. http://dx.doi.org/10.4102/JSAVA.v86i1.1286.. Whilst lead poisoning in raptors, scavenging birds and waterfowl is well studied and common knowledge, there is surprisingly little literature detailing the risk to mammalian scavengers and captive carnivores fed hunted meat. This case report describes the death of two captive cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus jubatus) following acute onset of nervous symptoms. Clinical signs included hyper-excitability, seizures, arched back, tail held abnormally high and hyper-salivation. Necropsy findings included bullets or a bullet in their stomachs. Kidney and liver lead levels from one cheetah (15.6 ppm and 17 ppm respectively) were consistent with a diagnosis of lead poisoning; liver from the second cheetah was not available for testing. Both animals were ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Myosin heavy chain composition of tiger (Panthera tigris) and cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) hindlimb muscles. AU - Hyatt, Jon Philippe K.. AU - Roy, Roland R.. AU - Stuart, Rugg. AU - Talmadge, Robert J.. PY - 2010/1/1. Y1 - 2010/1/1. N2 - Felids have a wide range of locomotor activity patterns and maximal running speeds, including the very fast cheetah (Acinonyx jubatas), the roaming tiger (Panthera tigris), and the relatively sedentary domestic cat (Felis catus). As previous studies have suggested a relationship between the amount and type of activity and the myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoform composition of a muscle, we assessed the MHC isoform composition of selected hindlimb muscles from these three felid species with differing activity regimens. Using gel electrophoresis, western blotting, histochemistry, and immunohistochemistry with MHC isoform-specific antibodies, we compared the MHC composition in the tibialis anterior, medial gastrocnemius (MG), plantaris (Plt), and soleus ...
In captivity, cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) frequently suffer from several unusual chronic diseases that rarely occur in their free-ranging counterparts. In order to develop a better understanding of their metabolism and health we documented the urine organic acids of 41 apparently healthy captive cheetahs, in an untargeted metabolomic study, using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. A total of 339 organic acids were detected and annotated. Phenolic compounds, thought to be produced by the anaerobic fermentation of aromatic amino acids in the distal colon, as well as their corresponding glycine conjugates, were present in high concentrations. The most abundant organic acids in the cheetahs urine were an as yet unidentified compound and a novel cadaverine metabolite, tentatively identified as N1,N5-dimethylpentane-1,5-diamine. Pantothenic acid and citramalic acid concentrations correlated negatively with age, while glutaric acid concentrations correlated positively with age, suggesting possible ...

The cheetah and racing greyhound are of a similar size and gross morphology and yet the cheetah is able to achieve a far higher top speed. We compared the kinematics and kinetics of galloping in the cheetah and greyhound to investigate how the cheetah can attain such remarkable maximum speeds. This also presented an opportunity to investigate some of the potential limits to maximum running speed in quadrupeds, which remain poorly understood. By combining force plate and high speed video data of galloping cheetahs and greyhounds, we show how the cheetah uses a lower stride frequency/longer stride length than the greyhound at any given speed. In some trials, the cheetahs used swing times as low as those of the greyhounds (0.2 s) so the cheetah has scope to use higher stride frequencies (up to 4.0 Hz), which may contribute to it having a higher top speed that the greyhound. Weight distribution between the animals limbs varied with increasing speed. At high speed, the hindlimbs support the majority ...
Cheetahs have declined particularly markedly in western, central and northern Africa (IUCN SSC 2012, Durant et al. 2014). The subspecies found in northwest Africa, A. j. hecki, is listed as Critically Endangered; see subspecies account for detailed information. Cheetah now occur in 10% of their historical range (1,053,746 km2), and possibly occur in another 920,520 km2. Much of this range is within the Sahara, where Cheetah occur at very low densities, estimated as 2.3 individuals per 10,000 km2 (Belbachir et al. 2015). There are five known Cheetah subpopulations in this region (IUCN SSC 2012): south-central Algeria, stretching through to north-eastern Mali, and possibly into western Libya (Belbachir et al. 2015); two connected subpopulations around the Termit massif in Niger; the WAP complex of protected areas in northern Benin, south-eastern Burkina Faso and south-western Niger; and south-eastern Chad and north-eastern Central African Republic (CAR). Cheetah have been extirpated from their ...

The preservation of the cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) hinges not only on conservation of wild populations, but also on successful reproduction within our captive population. Validation of hormone monitoring through the use of feces could eliminate the necessity of collecting serial blood samples, greatly increasing the ease and, in some cases, making possible the use of artificial insemination in breeding programs. Serial serum and concurrent fecal samples were collected once weekly from three female cheetahs, with additional data generated from three previous sampling periods from a fourth female. Samples represent episodes of pregnancy (n=4), pseudopregnancy (n=1) and non-pregnancy (n=1). Induction of ovulation and artifical insemination were attempted in two animals, resulting in one pseudopregnancy and one pregnancy that terminated spontaneously approximately 30-40 days into gestation. Radioimmunoassay and analysis revealed two (of six) significant correlations for progesterone (p |0.05) and p |0.01)
Ask anyone what the fastest animal on Earth is, and theyll probably say the cheetah. But the focus on the speedy feline has stolen attention from other species that go much faster - some three or more times faster than the cheetah. Who are the overlooked speedsters of the animal kingdom? To be clear, the cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is undeniably fast. And it is true that its the quickest animal on land. With documented top speeds of 64 mph (103 km/h), the cheetah easily surpasses other swift animals, like racehorses, to take the title of worlds fastest land animal. And some estimates of their top speed are closer to 70 mph (113 km/h), according to the Smithsonian National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute.. A combination of leg length, muscle size and a long stride gives the cheetah the ideal body for running across land, said John Hutchinson, a professor of evolutionary biomechanics at the Royal Veterinary College in London. Plus, a 2017 model based on 474 land and marine species, ranging ...

A novel leukoencephalomyelopathy was identified in 73 mature male and female large captive felids between 1994 and 2005. While the majority of identified cases occurred in cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus), the disease was also found in members of 2 other subfamilies of Felidae: 1 generic tiger (Panthera tigris) and 2 Florida panthers (Puma concolor coryi). The median age at time of death was 12 years, and all but 1 cheetah were housed in the United States. Characteristic clinical history included progressive loss of vision leading to blindness, disorientation, and/or difficulty eating. Neurologic deficits progressed at a variable rate over days to years. Mild to severe bilateral degenerative lesions were present in the cerebral white matter and variably and to a lesser degree in the white matter of the brain stem and spinal cord. Astrocytosis and swelling of myelin sheaths progressed to total white matter degeneration and cavitation. Large, bizarre reactive astrocytes are a consistent histopathologic ...
FIV was first isolated in 1987 from domestic cats (Felis catus) with chronic AIDS-like disorders [60]. Epidemiological studies by ELISA, immunoblotting, and/or PCR techniques have revealed that FIV is detectable in a broad range of wild animals in the family Felidae [61-63]. FIV has been detected in felids residing in the Old World, including lions (Panthera leo), cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) and leopards (Panthera pardus), and those in the New World, including pumas (Puma concolor), jaguars (Panthera onca), and ocelots (Leopardus pardalis) [61]. FIV appears to be distributed worldwide, since a felid species in Asia, Pallas cat (Otocolobus manul), has been shown to be positive for FIV by PCR [61, 64, 65]. Furthermore, one study has confirmed that a FIV-related virus is present in spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta), a related carnivore family belonging to Hyaenidae [61]. In contrast to the disorders seen in FIV-infected domestic cats, it appears that FIV infections in wild felids are relatively ...
Human-wildlife conflicts (HWC) are a global challenge and likely to increase in the future (1). Carnivore species are often involved in such conflicts because they prey on, or are feared to prey on, livestock. With the increasing human population and concurrent growth in livestock numbers, contact between carnivores, people, and their livestock will increase, and so will predation on livestock (2). Today, retaliatory killing of carnivores is still a common response to the perceived or actual threat of carnivore predation on livestock and can be a major threat to endangered carnivores (3). Nonlethal mitigation tools are therefore essential and also used widely, such as predator-proof bomas, kraals or electric fences (e.g., against lions (Panthera leo) (4)), livestock guarding dogs (e.g., against cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) (5)), light or sound deterrents (e.g., against cougars (Puma concolor) (6)), compensation payments (e.g., African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus) (7)), beef from certified ...

The recent increase in the creation of trans-boundary protected areas and wildlife corridors between them lend importance to information on pathogen prevalence and transmission among wildlife species that will become connected. One such initiative is the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA/TFCA) of which Botswanas Okavango Delta constitute a major contribution in terms of wildlife and ecosystems. Between 2008 and 2011, we collected serum samples from 14 lions (Panthera leo), four leopards (P. pardus), 19 spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta), and six cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) in the Okavango. Samples were tested for antibodies against: canine distemper virus (CDV), feline panleukopenia virus, enteric coronavirus, feline calicivirus, feline herpesvirus (FHV-1), and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). Evidence of exposure to all of these pathogens was found to varying degrees in at least one of the species sampled. High seroprevalence (, 90%) was only found for FHV-1 and FIV in ...
Indias Supreme Court has suspended an ambitious project to import cheetahs from Africa to an Indian wildlife sanctuary and revive a species which became extinct in the South Asian country nearly a quarter of a century ago. A popular target with hunters, the Asiatic cheetah disappeared from the forests of India in the 1950s.The last of the three cheetahs in the country are said to have been hunted down by a former king in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The government drew up a plan to revive the species by shipping African cheetahs from Namibia and introducing them to a wildlife

The cheetah is not only the fastest animal on land, it is also one of the most beautiful, stylish and athletic movers on the planet. However, the cheetah cannot run fast for long distances as it gets too hot. The cheetah is a sprinter. You wouldnt see Usain Bolt running the 10,000 meters would you? However, he could run 400 meters and that is about the maximum distance a cheetah can run at top speed, which is said to be about 70 mph but is more accurately about 64 mph. Usains average speed from a standing start over 100 meters is 23 mph with a top speed of 27.3, which by the way is about the same as your house cat.. If Mr Bolt and a cheetah ran 100 meters with a flying start, the cheetah would finish about 50 meters ahead of Mr Bolt at the finish. I hope that gives a feel for the majestic speed of this elegant wild cat. The cheetah has a maximum stride of 28 feet. The world record long jump (2013) is a bit over 29 feet. The cheetah does this almost every stride. The cheetah achieves these ...
We have been performing artificial inseminations in cheetahs for decades, and there hasnt been a cub born in almost 20 years, said Adrienne Crosier, cheetah biologist at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute and one of the scientists who performed the embryo transfer. Just the fact that we were successful with embryo transfer after only the third attempt gives me hope for the future of this technique for improving cheetah management, potentially on a global scale. This is a huge scientific breakthrough and, in many ways, is much better because it gives us much more flexibility with limited genetic material. This is an amazing milestone for cheetahs-we can extend a cheetahs biological clock.. Approximately one-third of the cheetah population living in zoos is removed from the breeding matrix due to age, health or behavior, and cheetahs ability to reproduce after 8 years of age declines significantly. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums Cheetah Species Survival Plan (SSP) has ...

Conservationists say South Africa does not have a quota for the sport hunting of cheetahs or for the export of cheetah trophies.. Believing the hunt illegal, we contacted the advertiser - Alexander Steyn, of Steyn Safari in Northern Cape . Steyn and his brother set up the outfit near Kimberley in 1994 and claim to have seen the company grow to one of the leading hunting operations in the region.. Through an Afrikaans-speaking agency in Limpopo , we negotiated with Steyn to buy two cheetahs and two lions. He told us two cheetahs were available costing R45 000 each, permits included.. The prices for the lions ranged from R180 000 for the biggest lion available in South Africa at the moment to about R30 000 for lionesses. Various ...
Social Life. Female cheetahs are generally solitary animals except when raising their dependent young. Males are either solitary or in coalitions of 2-3 siblings and/or unrelated males. Males may be either territorial or nomadic. Territorial males mark the area that they defend with urine and feces and mate with females that enter their territory. Non-territorial males cover ground at a fast rate and are defined as nomads, often remaining in a single area for no more than a few days.. Habitat and Range. Cheetahs are primarily terrestrial, but have been known to scramble up trees on occasion. They inhabit grasslands, dry forest, savanna woodland, semi-desert and scrub habitats mostly in sub-Saharan Africa. There are pocketed populations in southern Algeria and northern Niger, and they range from Senegal east to Somalia and south to northern South Africa. A few have been reported from Iran. Many of their strongholds are in eastern and southern African parks. Historically cheetahs had a very wide ...

The Palpur-Kuno sanctuary in Sheopur district of Madhya Pradesh may soon become home to Cheetahs, which will be translocated from Namibia for revival of this endangered and now-extinct species in India. If all goes well as per the plan, then Cheetah would be introduced in the Palpur-Kuno habitat by the end of December or early January next year, Madhya Pradesh Forest Minister, Sartaj Singh told PTI. The Cheetahs will be brought from Namibia for the revival of the now-extinct animal in the country, he said. Surveys have been done in this regard and opinion of the experts are in favour of the re-introduction of Cheetah at Palpur-Kuno, the minister said. Recently, a team of experts from Namibia including Lorrie Marker, conservationist and senior forest department officials visited Palpur-Kuno to workout the strategy for reintroduction of Cheetah in the Palpur-Kuno sanctuary spread in an area of nearly 344.686 square kilometer, the department sources said. Furthermore, the black streak under the eye is also seen on the face of many species that the cheetah preys upon. According to the cheetah section in Wild Cats of the World by Mel and Fiona Sunquist, 91% of cheetah kills in the Serengeti are Thomsons gazelle. In Kruger National Park, 68% of kills were the impala, and in other areas such as Botswana, springbok are an important part of the diet as well. 73.9% of the kills made by cheetahs in Nairobi National Park were Thomsons gazelle, Grants gazelle, and impala. As you can see in the pictures below, all of these antelope have that black streak under their eyes, though it is less pronounced in the Grants gazelle and impala than it is in the Thomsons gazelle. One of the biggest reasons for markings on an animal that dont aid in camouflage or sexual selection (i.e. differences between male and female that are used to attract a mate) is to help with species differentiation, so that they dont waste valuable time and resources attempting to ...

The cheetah becomes faster, the gazelle jumps higher. If this continues their adaptations will only grow bigger. In a million years we may have gazelles leaping through trees as if it were a kung-fu movie and cheetahs with claws so big, they can cut a tree down in one swipe. A constant progression, only to reach the same relation as before; there is a hypothesis for this type of co-evolution, appropriately named The Red Queen Hypothesis.6 Now here, you see, it takes all the running you can do to keep in the same place, says the Red Queen to Alice.8 This is seen in many animals of the animal kingdom, such as the cheetah/gazelle relationship, but also between us humans and one of our most influential predators, parasites. Their need to use us as a host is so great that we developed sex in order to try and fend them off, to some success.9 But even though we developed new weapons and defenses and combined our DNA to strengthen the next generation against them, they retaliated with their own set ...

Ever since Bush I was able to make that incubator-baby crap fly, I thought I could make an edifice as large as those structures in Bioshock III take off.. Good doggies do tricks, added Mr. Murdoch, red food-coloring dye, as used by goth kids, running down opposite sides of his mouth along with saliva, red ink trailing into the white.. In spite of their rebellious demeanors, the cheetahs remain polite because should they resist, they will be put to death, skinned and crafted into spectacularly jewel-encrusted thongs for Murdoch to prance around in.. Theyre not outspoken about their plight but they should be, said cheetah specialist Speedy McFeely of the Bristol Motor Speedway, Virginia and fucken redneck.. Adrian Cheetah Chen approached the Virginia physics expert and without asking permission bent him over and snorted a line of cocaine off the small of his back. With lips pursed, Adrian ...
Rusty AKA Hemi is very friendly and outgoing. He is playful, but calms quickly. He is very easy going, well-mannered and adaptable. He is so gentle and sensitive that he would make a great therapy dog. He is a happy boy who wags his tail often and gives kisses. He loves attention from everyone. He follows his foster family around the house and he is his foster moms shadow when she is home. He chatters his teeth when he is excited and he likes to talk when his foster mom comes home. He loves toys and likes to toss them in the air. He is a Second Chance at Life Dog from the Coldwater Prison Program. Hemi would do well in a working family home with well-mannered children, 6 and up. He is good with other dogs and would love another dog to snuggle with. The breeds origin has in popular literature often been romantically connected to Ancient Egypt, in which it is believed that the breed dates back about 4,000 years;[59][60] a belief for which there is no scientific evidence. While similar in appearance to Saluki (Persian Greyhound) or Sloughi (tombs at Beni Hassan c. 2000 BC), analyses of DNA reported in 2004 suggest that the Greyhound may not be closely related to these breeds, but is a close relative of herding dogs.[61][62] Historical literature on the first sighthound in Europe (Arrian), the vertragus, probable antecedent of the Greyhound, suggests that its origin lies with the ancient Celts from Eastern Europe or Eurasia. Greyhound-type dogs of small, medium, and large size, appear to have been bred across Europe since that time. All modern, pure-bred pedigree Greyhounds derive from the Greyhound stock recorded and registered first in private studbooks in the 18th century, then in public studbooks in the 19th century, which ultimately ...

First, a note to any impala suddenly rushed by a cheetah: Do not - repeat, do not - just zoom straight off as fast as four hooves can carry you.. The best escape move, according to analysis of the most detailed chase data yet from big cat predators, is some fluky turn, even though turning requires a slower stride. Swerve far enough, and the cheetah will be racing too fast to make the same.... ...

Your puppy needs exercise and attention. Su﫿cient exercise helps to prevent destructive behavior as well as builds physical strength and dexterity. Teach your puppy how to jump. At 﫿rst concentrate on helping the puppy jump o﫿 low objects until he can safely negotiate household furniture. Italian Greyhound puppies think they can 﫿y and will blithely leap out into space. The highest bed or table holds no terrors for the unknowing puppy. Frequent bursts of energy will be followed by periods of rest. Until your I.G. develops common sense you will want to be alert to situations that could lead to a leg break.. Although Italian Greyhounds need little in the way of coat grooming, nails must be done on a regular basis: 1‐3 times weekly with an electric grinder or 﫿le for conformational health and to help prevent leg breaks. Greyhounds nails grow longer and faster than other breeds. This robust growth often includes the quick (soft interior of the nail) so you should grind nails as often as ...

Excessive angulation in the hindquarters, with an elongated tibia, may, to some, give a more pleasing outline to the exhibit when stacked in the ring. But, in the long term, it can only lead to anatomical and locomotive disaster. Such angulation destroys the ability of the dogs forelimbs and hindlimbs to cooperate in harmony in propelling the body. Yet I have heard it argued by breed specialists at seminars that it will increase the power of propulsion operating through the hindlimbs and on through the spine. If it did, the racing Greyhound fraternity would have pursued it with great vigour. I have heard a dog show judge praise an over-angulated dog because it stood over a lot of ground! So does a stretched limousine but it requires a purpose-built construction to permit the luxury. For those who care about dogs and love their breed, physical soundness, the ability of each dog to lead a happy life and the future of the breed thankfully matter more. Freud wrote that dogs love their friends ...
The Leopard is a solitary member of the big cats. It is often confused with the Cheetah, but it is easily recognised by its panther-like features
The Animal Justice Party overwhelmingly supports the Greyhound Racing Prohibition Bill 2016. Last year I was asked to assist with developing a strategy after unfortunate evidence was gathered over several months in relation to live baiting. The training of greyhounds routinely involves a great deal of live baiting. Many trainers would arrive at a training track with various species-rabbits, possums, cats and piglets. One particular scene has haunted me ever since. It was not a one-off incident; it is systemic, it is part of the industry, it is the norm and it is integral to the industry. In broad daylight a possum, which is a nocturnal animal, was strapped to a lure. A cloth was placed over its shoulders and it was strapped down firmly by its lower legs. The only part of its body it could move was its tail. Owners paid $50 to train their dogs using that live bait.. The lure was set off, with engines roaring, screaming and vibrating. This nocturnal animal was sped around the track. When it was ...
