Streptococcus pneumoniae, one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality in humans, faces a range of potentially acidic conditions in the middle and late stages of growth in vitro, in diverse human fluids during the infection process, and in biofilms present in the nasopharynx of carriers. S. pneumoniae was shown to develop a weak acid tolerance response (ATR), where cells previously exposed to sublethal pHs (5·8-6·6) showed an increased survival rate of up to one order of magnitude after challenge at the lethal pH (4·4, survival rate of 10−4). Moreover, the survival after challenge of stationary phase cells at pH 4·4 was three orders of magnitude higher than that of cells taken from the exponential phase, due to the production of lactic acid during growth and increasing acidification of the growth medium until stationary phase. Global expression analysis after short-term (5, 15 and 30 min, the adaptation phase) and long-term (the maintenance phase) acidic shock (pH 6·0) was performed by

The upper region contains the semi-granular and granular cells, while the lower region contains the hyalinocytes. The error bars for the dead cells are negative, while the error bar for the live cells is positive. Different homogenous groups are labeled for only the dead cells since there was no significant difference in the number of total cells. - Ocean Acidification Affects Hemocyte Physiology in the Tanner Crab (Chionoecetes bairdi)
I am a 58 yr old male, good overall health, except I have been diagnosed with barrets esophagus and severe acid reflux. I have been on (Proton-pump inhibitors) ppis the last 20 years, 40 mlg the last 6-8 years, once a day. I have been trying to go off due to what I have read recently about long-lasting side effects, esp the kidney failure, as I donated one in 1980 to my father, and have no children. I have not found anything that seems to take its place, and struggle with just about everything I eat and drink though. Ranitidine seems to help the best, but only short term, and I would need to take it many times per day, every day. I just had my (Blood Urea Nitrogen Test) bun(6.43) and creatinine(123.76)checked. Would it be safe to go back on ppis, or what would you recommend? thanks!!. ...

Changes in cytoplasmic pH of suspension-cultured cells of Catharanthus roseus under extreme acid conditions were measured with the pH-dependent fluorescence dye; 2′,7′-bis-(2-carboxyethyl)-5 (and-6) carboxyfluorescein (-acetoxymethylester) (BCECF). When cells were treated with 1 mM HC1 (pH 3 solution), the cytoplasmic pH first decreased then returned to the original level. Treatment with 10 mM HC1 (pH 2 solution) acidified the cytoplasm to a greater extent, and the acidification continued at a constant level throughout the measurement. Treatment with a pH 2 solution resulted in a gradual decrease of the malate content, indicating the operation of biochemical pH regulation mechanism. The pH 2 treatment also caused a sudden decrease of the intracellular level of Pi. The cellular content of total phosphorus did not change during the acidification. The Pi was converted to the organic phosphate form. The ATP level was not increased by the pH 2 treatment, but slightly decreased. The role of Pi, ...
Back in 1968, Drs. Wachman and Bernstein theorized that the elevated renal acid load from meat, cheese, grains, and phosphate-rich foods may contribute to the development of osteoporosis. [Lancet 1968;1:958-9]. They suggested consuming more vegetables and fruits would reduce the acid load on the body and limit the loss of calcium being lost in the urine to buffer the increased renal acid load. A s.... ...
Virulent Salmonella typhimurium strains differ from the attenuated laboratory strain LT2 at the rpoS locus. It was previously shown that the rpoS gene in strain LT2 contains a rare UUG start codon (I. S. Lee, J. Lin, H. K. Hall, B. Bearson, and J. W. Foster, Mol. Microbiol. 17:155-167, 1995). This difference is responsible for the inability of LT2 to display a sustained log-phase acid tolerance response. We show that the altered rpoS allele (rpoS(LT2)) also affects the stationary-phase acid tolerance response in Salmonella. By transducing the rpoS(LT2) allele into virulent strain backgrounds and crossing wild-type rpoS allele into strain LT2, we demonstrate that the rpoS(LT2) allele contributes to the attenuation of strain LT2. We examined the effect of the rpoS allele on invasion and found that the rpoS status of the cell had no effect on the ability of the strains to invade intestinal epithelial cells in tissue culture. Enumeration of bacteria from tissues of infected mice indicated that the ...

It happens when a weak muscle doesnt close after swallowing as it should. That lets stomach juices splash back into the throat. Drugs such as Nexium and Prilosec reduce acid. But they dont fix the underlying problem, called GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease.. Rodd Foster had it so bad that he used to sleep sitting up to keep his dinner down. Tricia Carr worried that she would develop complications like the one that killed her mother.. Both Californians got help from the new device, approved a year ago by the federal Food and Drug Administration and also sold in Europe.. The treatment was "life-changing," said Foster, a 61-year-old plumbing contractor from Canyon Country, Calif. "Its been 30 years since Ive been able to eat normally and now I can eat anything anytime.". The Linx device, made by Torax Medical Inc., of St. Paul, Minn., is a ring of titanium beads with magnets inside. We read with great interest the recently published article in Physiological Reports on protein intake, renal acid load, and hemodynamic responses (Teunissen‐Beekman et al. 2016). In their study, Teunissen‐Beekman et al. examined effects of an increase in protein intake (60 g/day, given as a mix of protein isolates, 20% pea, 20% soy, 30% egg‐white, 30% milk) on glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and related renally relevant parameters in overweight individuals with untreated elevated blood pressure and normal kidney function. Contrary to the authors initial hypothesis, neither fasting nor postprandial GFR values (the latter adjusted for the fasting measurements) were higher in the protein‐supplemented group (PROT) compared with a second group (MALT) which instead received 60 g/day of maltodextrin on an isoenergetic basis. The authors reported overall remarkably high GFR values in their subjects along with a short temporary GFR decline within 30 min postprandially in the ...

These typically fall into the acidic food category. Research has found that the body is doomed for disease in an acidic environment. Broadly acidic foods include meat/fish, dairy and sugars (as in sodas as well) and alkaline foods include fruits and vegetables. To regain health (currently suffering from disease) a ratio of 90% alkaline and 10% acidic food choices has been recommended. The test for acidic/alkaline environment(pH) in the body can be easily performed with litmus paper purchased in a drugstore. It has to mandatorily read above pH7. Therefore, the first step by parents of autistic kids should include: ...
The U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the extraction of copper (II) from acidic sulfate solutions using commercial extractants lix 84, p5100, and pt5050. Mathematical models, consisting of sets of nonlinear mass action and mass balance equations, were solved using a commercial equation-solving program on a personal computer. The models suggest that lix 84 is a mixture of monomeric and dimeric extract
Then came Joey. He was born in March of 2011. He was born with EB and was the most severe of my three:( He was born with no skin from the knees down on both legs along with some missing skin on his wrists. When he was 10 days old he started having breathing problems and was admitted to the PICU. Within hours of arriving to the hospital, he went into respiratory failure and spent 7 days on a ventilator and almost needed a trach...but thankfully the blisters and swelling had gone done enough where he didnt need a trach. But it was discovered that he had severe acid reflux. The reflux was causing him to aspirate when he swallowed. Which in turned caused damage to the back of his throat spreading into his upper airway. (which is why he stopped breathing) He could no longer safely eat by mouth and required a feeding tube to be surgical placed in his stomach. ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Effect of ocean acidification on the speciation of metals in seawater. AU - Millero, Frank J.. AU - Woosley, Ryan. AU - Ditrolio, Benjamin. AU - Waters, Jason. PY - 2009/12. Y1 - 2009/12. N2 - Increasing atmospheric CO 2 over the next 200 years will cause the pH of ocean waters to decrease further. Many recent studies have examined the effect of decreasing pH on calcifying organisms in ocean waters and on other biological processes (photosynthesis, nitrogen fixation, elemental ratios, and community structure). In this review, we examine how pH will change the organic and inorganic speciation of metals in surface ocean waters, and the effect that it will have on the interactions of metals with marine organisms. We consider both kinetic and equilibrium processes. The decrease in concentration of OH - and CO 3 2- ions can affect the solubility, adsorption, toxicity, and rates of redox processes of metals in seawater. Future studies are needed to examine how pH affects the ...

A major issue in microbial ecology is to identify the limits of life for growth and survival, and to understand the molecular mechanisms that define these limits. Thus, interest in the biodiversity and ecology of extreme environments has grown in recent years for several reasons. Some are basic and revolve around the idea that extreme environments are believed to reflect early Earth conditions. Others are related to the biotechnological potential of extremophiles. In this regard, the study of extremely acidic environments has become increasingly important since environmental acidity is often caused by microbial activity. Highly acidic environments are relatively scarce worldwide and are generally associated with volcanic activity or mining operations. For most acidic environments, low pH facilitates metal solubility, and therefore acidic waters tend to have high concentrations of heavy metals. However, highly acidic environments are usually inhabited by acidophilic and acidotolerant eukaryotic

pH balance or pH homeostasis in humans commonly refers to the internal balance of the bodys electro-magnetic and chemical systems in response to the changing conditions of the external world and the changing conditions of the internal world. The word homeostasis comes from the Greek words: "homeo" means similar or "alki" or "alkaline" and "stasis" means a tendency toward maintaining stability. There are many homoeostatic mechanisms in our bodies that help maintain this balance and our state of health is directly related to the health of these mechanisms. pH homeostasis is maintained by dynamic processes of feedback and regulation. pH homeostasis has only one objective: to preserve the beneficial conditions of life in the internal alkali environment. Every day we are bombarded with external influences that threaten that balanced internal alkaline pH environment. Some of these threats include becoming too hot or too cold, eating too much or eating acidic foods or drinks, breathing polluted air ...
By means of vital staining with indicators a study has been made of the changes in reaction and in certain other attributes of a tissue abruptly rendered ischemic. Grafts of mouse skin have been employed as test material. It has been found that almost at once after implantation vigorous grafts become notably acid as compared with the normal skin and that they survive and "take" despite the acid condition, which remains at a maximum for several days. Weak or injured grafts on the contrary tend to be as alkaline as their surroundings, if not more so. Through experiments directed to the purpose reasons for this difference have been found in the lessened metabolic activities of the cells of the injured skin, and in an increased permeability which leads to a generalized suffusion of the damaged tissue with the alkaline lymph and an abnormally rapid escape of carbon dioxide from it. The influence of these factors to determine the reaction of tissues dying within the body has not been sufficiently ...
