Copper bis(4-ethyl-3-thiosemicarbazonato) acenaphthenequinone (1) and copper bis(4-methyl-3-thiosemicarbazonato) acenaphthenequinone (2) are synthesized and characterized in solution, in the solid state, and radiolabeled. Serum-protein binding radioassays show good stability in solution and about 25 % binding to protein over 1 h, which is comparable with the hypoxia selective tracer [(64)Cu(ATSM)]. Cyclic voltammetry shows fast and reversible reduction at redox potentials similar to the values known for hypoxia-selective copper compounds. However, despite this, complex 1 does not show any hypoxic-selective uptake in HeLa cells over 1-h standard assays. Possible reasons for this are studied by using the intrinsic fluorescence of the Cu(II) complexes to determine the cellular distributions and uptake mechanism by confocal microscopy. The complexes are found to bind to the external cell membrane and disperse evenly in the cytoplasm only after a very slow cell internalization (|1 h). No significant changes

A noise source identification technique for the analysis of thermal systems is presented. The proposed method uses transient spectral sound data to assist in determining the source of sound radiation by tracking the variation of the frequency of tones during transient thermal loading (i.e., thermal system warm-up). By considering the temperature dependence of the modulus of elasticity (Youngs modulus) it can be shown that structure related tones will decrease in frequency during warm-up. Tones due to propagation of sound in many fluids (i.e., gases and water) will increase in frequency during warm-up due to the temperature dependence of the speed of sound. The analysis method is demonstrated by identifying the source of several noise tones for a pulse combustion furnace ...

The fate of six polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons during anaerobic digestion of municipal sludges was investigated in a two-stage pilot-scale digester system. Primary digester removal efficiencies ranged from 23% for acenaphthene to 62% for acenaphthylene; secondary digester removal efficiencies ranged from 22% for acenaphthylene to 42% for phenanthrene. Most of the remaining mass of candidate compounds was present in the secondary digester waste sludge stream. Less than 2.5% of the candidate compounds entering the digestion system was present in the secondary digester supernatant. A dynamic model of the primary digester incorporating mixed first-order biodegradation kinetics was calibrated for each of the candidate compounds. The biodegradation rate coefficients that were estimated for the primary digester ranged from 0.004 L/g·d for acenaphthene to 0.16 L/g·d for acenaphthylene. The biodegradation rate coefficient for acenaphthene did not significantly differ from zero ...

Wybutosine (yW) is a tricyclic nucleoside with a large side chain found at the 3-position adjacent to the anticodon of eukaryotic phenylalanine tRNA. yW supports codon recognition by stabilizing codon-anticodon interactions during decoding on the ribosome. To identify genes responsible for yW synthesis from uncharacterized genes of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, we employed a systematic reverse genetic approach combined with mass spectrometry (ribonucleome analysis). Four genes YPL207w, YML005w, YGL050w and YOL141w (named TYW1, TYW2, TYW3 and TYW4, respectively) were essential for yW synthesis. Mass spectrometric analysis of each modification intermediate of yW revealed its sequential biosynthetic pathway. TYW1 is an iron-sulfur (Fe-S) cluster protein responsible for the tricyclic formation. Multistep enzymatic formation of yW from yW-187 could be reconstituted in vitro using recombinant TYW2, TYW3 and TYW4 with S-adenosylmethionine, suggesting that yW synthesis might proceed through sequential ...
The use of methanol as a quenching reagent resulted in clean conversion of 3 to the abnormal adduct aIPr·GaR3 (5) (Scheme 2b). Notably, 5 is also formed as a protonation product from the reaction of 3 with the imidazolium salt IMes·HCl (1,3-bis-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazolium chloride) (Scheme 2c). These findings not only demonstrate that the C2 position of 3 in the imidazole ring is its preferred basic site, but also the high strength of its Ga-C4 bond as it is retained in 5. Furthermore in view of these results it appears that for the GaR3 fragment aIPr is a better ligand than the related normal IMes carbene (obtained from deprotonation of the imidazolium salt, Scheme 2c), as no ligand exchange occurs. Compound 5 was isolated as a crystalline solid in a 61% yield (see ESI‡ for experimental details and NMR spectroscopic studies) and its molecular structure was established by X-ray crystallography (Fig. 4).. The Ga-C4 bond length (i.e. Ga-C2 in Fig. 4) of 2.0759(16) Å in 5 is ...
Emission inventory (EI) and receptor model (RM) are two of the three source apportionment (SA) methods recommended by Ministry of Environment of China and used widely to provide independent views on emission source identifications. How to interpret the mixed results they provide, however, were less studied. In this study, a cross-validation study was conducted in one of Chinas fast-developing and highly populated city cluster- the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region. By utilizing a highly resolved speciated regional EI and a region-wide gridded volatile organic compounds (VOCs) speciation measurement campaign, we elucidated underlying factors for discrepancies between EI and RM and proposed ways for their interpretations with the aim to achieve a scientifically plausible source identification ...
misc{5098ed88-419a-43f4-a897-5d700385fe0b, abstract = {Aerosol particles have, since Classical Antiquity, been linked to adverse effects on human health. It is estimated that the particles in urban air pollution causes 100 000 deaths in Europe each year, whereof 5 000 in Sweden. These figures do not include the outcomes of indoor sources or smoking, which shortens the lives of millions of people worldwide. Many studies indicate that fine particles (<2.5 μm) are to be more toxic than larger ones. Especially the ultrafine particles (<0.1 μm), typically originating from combustion sources, have been of much concern. Part of the reason could be their high probability to deposit deep into the lung once inhaled. A novel method has been developed for determination of fine and ultrafine particle deposition in the respiratory tract. It is designed to be used on larger groups of human subjects in exposure studies and in typical ambient and indoor environments. The method is demonstrated to have a ...

A volumetric pressure plate (extractor) can be used to measure the soil-water characteristic curve in the laboratory using the axis translation technique. The volume of extracted water from the soil specimen in the volumetric pressure plate can be continuously measured during the test without the stoppage of air pressure during the measurements. However, the water volume measurement in the volumetric pressure plate requires an air trap, a ballast tube, a burette, and a vacuum device while maintaining a constant pore-water pressure in the soil specimen, which is quite complicated and tedious. In order to improve the measuring method of the volumetric pressure plate, a modified volumetric pressure plate was developed and tested on residual soil specimens. The modified apparatus can measure the volume of the extracted water using both Method A and Method B of ASTM D6836-02 depending on the range of matric suction. In addition, the volume of diffused air during testing can also be measured for ...

According to the REACH Regulation, Annex VIII, Column 2, the study does not need to be conducted if based on the physicochemical properties the substance can be expected to have a low potential for adsorption (e.g. the substance has a low octanol water partition coefficient). Direct Blue 199 is expected to have a low potential for absorption, on the basis of the partition coefficient; the log Pow was determined to be negative. The organic carbon-water, suspended matter-water and soil-water partition coefficients were in any case estimated, using EUSES v.2.1.2, in order to derive the PNECs for sediment and soil, according to the equilibrium partitioning method. Furthermore, for the same purpose the soil-water and suspended matter-water partition coefficients were also estimated: Suspended matter-water partition coefficient: 0.917 Soil-water partition coefficient: 0.22 [LogKoc: -0.17] ...
In this study, multi-planar Nearfield Acoustical Holography (NAH) is used to investigate noise radiated from the front, side and rear areas of single tires on a two-wheel trailer. Contributions to the radiated noise from the leading edge, trailing edge, and sidewall of the tire are identified. Two tires - an experimental monopitch tire and a production passenger car tire - are evaluated on a smooth asphalt pavement at 58 km/hr. From the measured complex pressure, acoustic intensity is reconstructed on three planes surrounding the tire using modified NAH procedures. Additionally, sound power levels are presented in tabulated and spectra forms. Tire noise generating mechanisms are inferred based on the results ...

Modulating signaling pathways for research and therapy requires either suppression or expression of selected genes or internalization of proteins such as enzymes, antibodies, nucleotide binding proteins or substrates including nucleoside phosphates and enzyme inhibitors. Peptides, proteins and nucleotides are transported by fusing or conjugating them to cell penetrating peptides or by formation of non-covalent complexes. The latter is often preferred because of easy handling, uptake efficiency and auto-release of cargo into the live cell. In our studies complexes are formed with labeled or readily detectable cargoes for qualitative and quantitative estimation of their internalization. Properties and behavior of adhesion and suspension vertebrate cells as well as the protozoa Leishmania tarentolae are investigated with respect to proteolytic activity, uptake efficiency, intracellular localization and cytotoxicity. Our results show that peptide stability to membrane-bound, secreted or intracellular

Free roaming dogs are increasing in numbers. They live in unhygienic conditions and are not vaccinated mostly. They create several problems in the community, particularly health threats to human. Dog biting is a commonly reported case in some hospitals in Bangladesh. Rabies is one of the killers of people in Bangladesh and transmission occurs mostly due the dog biting. Death commonly occurs in children due to rabies. Rabies death is completely preventable by vaccinating dogs at national level. Many steps have already been taken. Source identification of dogs, animal birth control program and proper surveillance are necessary. Sustainable implementation of programs to manage dog population, dog bite management and awareness raising among population can bring out fruitful result in this situation. Inhumane killing of dogs to reduce the number can never be a permanent solution. Vaccinating dogs is the most effective strategy suggested by experts. Therefore, it is not too late to implement action plans with
Interest in agricultural water management extends beyond irrigation and into catchment management and dryland cropping systems. Collaborative research projects with partners in Africa have focussed on interactions between land-use and hydrological response in a semi-arid environment.. My research often brings together elements of soil science and hydrology within broader interdisciplinary approaches to environmental management. This interest is reflected in recent work, which explored indigenous farmers knowledge of their soils as an aid to planning soil-water management interventions. It is reflected also in a third focus of research, which has involved a succession of research students in investigation of the soil hydrological processes affecting management of salinity in irrigated land.. ...
Shallow rooting and susceptibility to drought are believed to be caused, at least in part, by strongly acidic (pH < 5.5, 1:1 soil-water), aluminum (Al)-toxic subsoils. However, this hypothesis has not been clearly confirmed under field conditions. The Al toxicity hypothesis was tested on a map unit of Matawan-Hammonton loam (0-2% slope) on unlimed and limed field plots (pH range 5.1 to 5.8) at Bel ...

We used the redox-active bis(imino)acenapthene (BIAN) ligand to synthesize homoleptic aluminum, chromium, and gallium complexes of the general formula (BIAN) 3M. The resulting compounds were characterized using X-ray crystallography, NMR, EPR, magnetic susceptibility and cyclic voltammetry measurements and modeled using both DFT and ab initio wavefunction calculations to compare the orbital contributions of main group elements and transition metals in ligand-based redox events. Ultimately, complexes of this type have the potential to improve the energy density and electrolyte stability of grid-scale energy storage technologies, such as redox flow batteries, through thermodynamically-clustered redox events. ...

Phytopathogenic fungi must feed on their hosts to propagate and cause disease. Their ability to access the rich nutrient supply offered by living plants is one of the most obvious properties that distinguish pathogens from saprophytes. Successful invasion by pathogens depends as much on their ability to utilize the available nutrient sources offered by plants as on their ability to penetrate plants and evade defensive mechanisms. Here, we review current knowledge on the nature of the nutrient supplies utilized by pathogens during infection. The available evidence is rudimentary in most cases. There is much evidence to suggest that fungal metabolism can be divided into at least two phases. The first is based on lipolysis and occurs during germination and penetration of the host. The second phase uses glycolysis and predominates during the invasion of host tissue. We also propose, mainly on theoretical grounds, that a third phase of nutrition occurs late in infection during which new spores are ...
