This report is a review of the Nordic countries systems regarding fatal occupational accidents, i.e. the reporting process, the investigation process, the registration process, the registries, and the legal statutes. The report shows that during the time period 2003-2008 the total number of fatal occupational accidents in the Nordic countries was 1243, i.e. between 1.51 to 2.49 fatal occupational accidents per 100,000 workers per year varying between countries. The report also shows that more than 93 % of these fatal accidents involved males, which reflects the predominance of men in the most dangerous branches, i.e. agriculture, construction, transport, and communication. The report concludes that in order to make data on occupational accidents more comparable among the Nordic countries and improve our common ability to identify prevention strategies, a closer collaboration in the field of occupational accident investigation and registration is needed.. ...

Temas de actualidad / Current topics Work-related accidents and diseases take a heavy toll worldwide1 Key words: occupational health, occupational diseases, occupational accidents, accident prevention.. While some two million workers die each year from work-related accidents and diseases, the full toll to workers around the world is much higher than that. Depending on the type of job, for every fatal accident that occurs, there are 500 to 2 000 injuries. Further, the large majority of occupational deaths and accidents could be prevented if countries applied existing, available accident prevention strategies and practices, according to a recent report from the International Labor Organization (ILO). The ILO report was prepared for the XVIth World Congress on Occupational Safety and Health at Work, which was held in Vienna, Austria, at the end of May 2002. Entitled Introductory Report: Decent Work ¾ Safe Work, the ILO document said that the number of estimated annual deaths among workers had ...

The CFOI program also revealed that the most dangerous job in America belonged to fishermen based on their highest rate of fatality, although truckers suffered the most total deaths of any occupation. For more information about the 2011 Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) program, visit: http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/cfoi.pdf.. The 2011 CFOI program found that the rate of fatal work injury for U.S. workers in 2011 of 3.5 per 100,000 Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) workers dropped slightly from a final rate of 3.6 per 100,000 FTE workers in 2010. For more information on the version of NAICS used in this year, see our definitions page at https://www.bls.gov/iif/oshcfdef.htm.. The ownership category government is not presented separately and may be included in any industry category. In 2007, the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) adopted hours-based state fatal injury rates. Employment-based rates were used previously. Because of substantial differences between rates calculated using the two methods, hours-based state fatal injury rates should not be compared to the employment-based rates from previous years ...
If you have had an accident at work within the past three years, you could be entitled to compensation. Discussing your case with an experienced personal injury lawyer is a step you should take as soon as possible after your accident. Finding out whether you have a valid claim can usually be done over the phone and wont normally take more than about 20 minutes.. The time limit for making time limit for making work accident claims is three years, but the sooner you start your claim the better. This is because as time goes on, the process of gathering evidence to support your case can become more difficult. In some cases, particularly industrial diseases such as mesothelioma and asbestosis, the illness may not be known until many years after exposure to hazardous substances or working conditions. In these cases, the three year time limit does not start until the date your illness is diagnosed by a doctor, which is known as the date of knowledge.. When you make a personal injury claim, you will ...

This study aimed to compare different approaches for interrogating text fields for identifying work-related injuries presenting at EDs in Queensland to inform future surveillance of work-related injury using narrative text. Three approaches were compared: a basic keyword search, an index search using common work terms identified by a manual review, and a more complex content analytic text mining approach. Each approach was examined and refined using various techniques, and the final sample of cases identified using each approach were compared in terms of sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive value of each approach.. Any system used to identify cases needs to have good sensitivity (to identify true cases) and good specificity (to avoid including non-cases). However, there is a trade-off between the two, with one likely to decrease as the other increases [10, 25]. For case identification, it is usually more important to have a sensitive system. This allows nearly all cases to be ...

While the terminology used in the Work-related injuries survey topic (work-related injuries) differs from that used in the international standards, the underlying definitions are broadly consistent with those recommended by the ICLS. The survey has not sought to distinguish between work-related illnesses, work-related injuries or work-related injuries sustained on journeys to or from work. Instead, it broadly defines work-related injuries as illnesses or injuries sustained as a result of work activities, on a journey to or from work, or the aggravation of pre-existing conditions where employment was a contributory factor ...

A review of worker deaths by a program at the University of Iowa shows farmers accounted for one-third of the 79 deaths statewide in 2007- but the overall trend in ag deaths was down. Murray Madsen, is the chief investigator for the Iowa Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation program or FACE. Madsen says the number of deaths of farmers in the past 10-12 years is an average of 29, so this years number is lower than the average. He says theres a good trend in the numbers.. Madsen says this is the second straight year theyve recorded farmer deaths thats lower than the ten year average. Madsen says many of the deaths are related to equipment. He says the number one incident in farmer deaths involved tractor overturns, particularly tractors without rollover bars. Madsen says unless the rollover bar has been removed, the tractors involved were likely built prior to 1985. Madsen says other farm deaths were related to farmers being crushed or hit by equipment, which leads him to one ...

A ventricular assist device for a heart includes a compression band-stay-pad assembly for encircling substantially the heart perimeter and comprising an elongated band member or chain disposed in a sealed protective structure filled with a lubricating medium. The band member may be fixed at one end and wound upon, or unwound from, a rotatable spool by a drive motor through a speed reducer. Force-transmitting support or stay assemblies are disposed in the protective structure between the band member and a resilient pad assembly for encircling the heart and promoting heart tissue ingrowth therein. The force-transmitting stay assemblies are biased circumferentially, and thus radially outward, by compression return springs disposed therebetween. The resilient pad assembly includes a corrugated surface provided with vertical coil springs, which help prevent damage to heart tissue and facilitate return of the pad assembly to an initial condition, embedded defibrillator electrodes and relatively soft portions

Many studies have found that adolescent and young adult workers are more likely to be injured on the job than older adults. However, there has been some debate as to whether this higher risk of injury is because of factors directly related to age (such as immaturity, reluctance to ask questions of supervisors) or whether it is because young workers are more likely to be employed in riskier jobs (such as jobs that require heavy lifting).. A 2005 study by Curtis Breslin and Peter Smith of the IWH used data from the Canadian Community Health Survey to examine the relationship between age and the rate (per hour worked) of on-the-job injuries requiring medical attention, while controlling for type of occupation and the degree of physical exertion required by the job.. The results showed that young male workers experienced a higher rate of injury, but that much of this elevated injury risk came from the fact that they were more likely than older men to be in high risk occupations and/or in jobs ...
