This report is a review of the Nordic countries systems regarding fatal occupational accidents, i.e. the reporting process, the investigation process, the registration process, the registries, and the legal statutes. The report shows that during the time period 2003-2008 the total number of fatal occupational accidents in the Nordic countries was 1243, i.e. between 1.51 to 2.49 fatal occupational accidents per 100,000 workers per year varying between countries. The report also shows that more than 93 % of these fatal accidents involved males, which reflects the predominance of men in the most dangerous branches, i.e. agriculture, construction, transport, and communication. The report concludes that in order to make data on occupational accidents more comparable among the Nordic countries and improve our common ability to identify prevention strategies, a closer collaboration in the field of occupational accident investigation and registration is needed.. ...

BACKGROUND: Injury rate among mining workers in Zimbabwe was 789/1000 workers in 2008. The proportion of severe occupational injuries increased from 18% in 2008 to 37% in 2009. We investigated factors associated with severe injuries at the mine. METHODS: An unmatched 1:1 case-control study was carried out at the mine, a case was any worker who suffered severe occupational injury at the mine and was treated at the mine or district hospital from January 2008 to April 2010, a control was any worker who did not suffer occupational injury during same period. We randomly selected 156 cases and 156 controls and used interviewer administered questionnaires to collect data from participants. It has long been recognised that inadequate safety awareness is one of the main causes of occupational accidents. We believe that basic induction safety training can help to inculcate a strong safety culture. It was on this premise that we enacted the Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Amendment) Ordinance in 1999 to provide for mandatory safety training for all workers in the construction and container handling industries. These workers are required to attend a one-day safety course organised by training providers approved by the Labour Department. Upon satisfactory completion of the training, they will be issued with a certificate. Only with such a certificate can they be allowed to work on a construction site or in a container handling establishment. The certificate is valid for three years.
