Participation in high school athletics carries an intrinsic risk of injury, but that doesnt mean certain types of injuries cant be decreased. There has been a proliferation of injury prevention programs. These programs have the ability to improve performance and decrease risk of sustaining certain injuries, especially ACL injuries and ankle sprains. While this information is readily available, there has been some hesitancy to adopt these and similar programs.. In an Oregon survey of high school soccer and basketball coaches, many of the coaches were aware that injury prevention programs existed, but they were not adopting those programs for their own teams.1 Some of their reasons included the belief that what they currently did was similar to the program; their program was superior to the researched program; or they were not aware of how much actual sport performance gains occurred as a result of these programs. Those concerns have validity and merit further discussion.. Many injury programs ...
Using Caroline Finch`s Tripp model1 (Translating Research into Injury Prevention Practice) as a framework, a working group was established to produce a strategy to reduce ACL injuries. This group included elite coaches, orthopaedic knee surgeons, medical staff working with teams and representatives of the GAA. They considered incidence and aetiology of ACL injuries in GAA athletes2 as well as important contextual and sport-specific factors that may influence the effectiveness of an injury prevention programme. The working group agreed that an injury prevention warm-up was the best approach in order to facilitate effectiveness to the wider GAA population. They also recognised that this programme needed to be coach led and embedded in normal training practices.. Modelled on the successful FIFA 11+ programme, the working group designed a sport specific warm up. Initial versions of the warm-up were trialled by athletes and coaches and refined several times to ensure the final product worked in a ...

According to The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), farming is considered one of the most hazardous and dangerous occupations in the US. Farmers are at a relatively high risk of fatal and nonfatal injuries. It is important that farm workers be aware of potential hazards in day-to-day farm operations to reduce the possibility of injury or death. Transportation incidents, the incident with the most casualties among workers fatal injuries, represented 42.6% of these fatalities. April 19, 2012. Washington, DC, April 19, 2012 - The U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) announced today that its investigation into the April 20, 2010 Macondo well blowout, explosion and fire in the Gulf of Mexico is progressing, with two interim reports with findings and recommendations to be released this year. A final report is expected to be completed in early 2013.. Investigation findings to date indicate a need for companies and regulators to institute more rigorous accident prevention programs similar to those in use overseas. The CSB announcement was made approaching the second anniversary of the tragedy, which took eleven lives and caused the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history,. Process safety regulations and standards utilized by oil companies in refineries and process plants in the continental U.S. have a stronger major accident prevention focus, CSB investigators have determined. Unlike the U.S. offshore regulatory system, the onshore process safety requirements are more ...

The ThinkFirst National Injury Prevention Foundation was first implemented nationally in 1986 as the National Head and Spinal Cord Injury Prevention Program. The American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) directed two neurosurgeons, E. Fletcher Eyster, MD, of Pensacola, Florida and Clark Watts, MD, JD, of Columbia, Missouri to develop a national injury prevention program based on their previous prevention efforts in their respective communities. The program was soon named the Think First National Injury Prevention Foundation and later changed ThinkFirst to one word. ThinkFirst For Teens was developed for assembly or classroom presentation for high school and middle school students. The fast-passed presentation incorporated three components 1) Harms Way, the first of several award winning videos produced to kick off the presentation 2) the health educator presentation, using models of the brain, skull and spinal column to explain how ...

It is no surprise that snow, ice and freezing weather can create problems for people. Slips and falls abound, for one thing. Those who like to indulge in winter sporting activities, however, are far more likely to receive injuries, especially if they have not conditioned their bodies in advance.. Skiing, skating and tobogganing can all lead to muscle spasms, strains or tears in those who arent physically prepared. Those of a less sporty disposition can experience problems clearing snow from the yard, or in similar activities, and even walking outdoors can create problems if the body is not properly insulated and the muscles are not warmed up, especially in the elderly. Colder temperatures cause less blood to flow to the extremities in order to keep the core warmer. This means muscles work less efficiently and injuries are more likely.. Properly warming up your body is therefore even more important before embarking on any exercise or sport in cold weather. This applies to both outdoors and ...

According to the TRIP report, 21 percent of Missouris rural roads were in poor condition in 2013, the 15th highest share in the nation. In 2014, 15 percent of Missouris rural bridges were structurally deficient, the tenth highest share nationally. Many, many miles of rural roads originally designed to accommodate farm-to-market transportation activities now carry increasing volumes of commuters living in suburbia and exurbia, said Michael Right, vice president of public affairs for AAA Missouri. The increasing amount and different types of traffic are placing added stress on these antiquated roadways and exposing greater numbers of drivers to its deficiencies. Without added resources directed at improving this situation, the cost in lives lost, time wasted and missed opportunities will continue to grow. The quality of life in Americas small communities and rural areas and the health of the nations rural economy is highly reliant on the quality of the nations transportation system, ...

Risk assessment is the core element in workplace health and safety and is an essential cornerstone in the fulfilment of operator obligations. It´s the basis for systematic and successful health and safety management. According to the Industrial Safety and Health Regulations (BetrSichV), the Industrial Safety Law (ArbSchG) and the Accident Prevention Regulations Principles of Prevention (DGUV Regulation 1), all employers - irrespective of the number of employees - are obliged to carry out an appropriate and legally compliant risk assessment in Germany. The Occupational Safety and Health Law regulates the employers obligation to determine and assess hazards and specifies possible causes of hazards and objects for risk assessment. It obligates employers to document the result of the risk assessment, the occupational safety measures defined by them and the outcome of their inspection. Although the employer may carry out the risk assessment himself or assign it to qualified personnel, e.g. ...

Read in Spanish. Lifestyle risks are now the overall dominant factor that determines the likelihood of a long and healthy life. Florian Boecker, Head of Life Solutions at PartnerRe, reviews lifestyle risk trends and their dynamic and varied impact on Life and Health re/insurance. We all hope (and in many cases, expect) to live a long, healthy life. Over the last century, disease and accident prevention measures and medical progress have massively improved our chances of doing just that. Indeed, the world average life expectancy at birth more than doubled over this period, increasing from 31 years at the beginning of the 20th century to 68 years in 20131 (although there is still a large contrast between developed countries, where a newborn can expect to live well beyond its 80th birthday, and the poorest countries where it will struggle to reach its 50th). Most of this progress in life expectancy is due to the successful fight against infectious diseases, better treatment of cardiovascular ...

South Africa is home to an estimated 53 million people, 400 000 of whom play rugby union (rugby) (www.worldrugby.com). Although rare, rugby can be associated with permanently disabling injuries, which are tragic for the player and their family and also negative for the sports image.1 To reduce these injuries, a nationwide injury prevention programme, called BokSmart (www.boksmart.com), was launched in South Africa in 2009.. Due to its vast socioeconomic disparities, South Africa is a difficult context for the implementation of any health intervention, let alone injury prevention programmes. South Africa ranks as the most inequitable country in the world (www.data.worldbank.org). Moreover, this inequity extends to healthcare: a recent report indicated that the poorest quintile of South Africans receive ,10% of the countrys health benefits despite requiring close to 40% of these services, according to their self-reported health (figure 1).2 This disparity is partly due to infrastructure ...
